WATER: EVAPORATION IN HUMID CLIMATES

The Impact of High Humid climates on the Evaporators

MINETEK EVAPORATION TECHNOLOGY IN HUMID/TROPICAL CLIMATES The Minetek evaporators operate well in humid environments, in fact the majority of projects are located in humid, high rainfall climates such as South East USA, Caribbean, West Africa, Northern Australia, Brazil, Central Africa etc. • Minetek units Will perform even in humid environments –This is exploited by the enormous throughput of each unit • The Air to water ration is one of the critical features. The Minetek 400/200 has a ratio of 2000: 1. • Minetek units enhance the ambient/pan evaporation rate. • This is achieved by GREATLY increasing the surface area of the water (evaporation being a surface phenomenon). • If there is ANY ambient/pan evaporation then the evaporation units will improve on this. • Evaporation is not the same as the inverse of humidity. • Humidity is typically reported as a Relative Humidity which is expressed as a percentage. • Even at 100% Relative humidity the air can take on more water. • Accordingly, evaporation can, and does, still occur at a Relative Humidity of 100% (or more). This is particularly true for an open system where air is moving and being replaced. • Evaporation is not equal to (100 – Relative Humidity) • Relative Humidity is defined in the physical properties of water and thus is unrelated to the notion of air holding water (Wikipedia). • A reduced air temperature will reduce the amount of water per kilogram of air required to achieve 100% Relative Humidity (see below), however, evaporation can still occur at a Relative Humidity of 100% • In summary, humidity should not be used to determine or infer evaporation rate. • Evaporation should be determined by a pan evaporation rate measurement only (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_evaporation).
