District 20 Director - An Interview It was my privilege to interview our esteemed District 20 Director over phone. I thank Dr Makhlouf for sparing his valuable time for this endeavour and it is my pleasure to present his answers for our readers. TM Riana Pinto, Area 22 Director AD: How did you like your TM journey to the top District Director post? Dr. MOHAMED MAKHLOUF DD: I must say that Toastmasters journey is a life changing DTM journey. Actually I loved each moment of my journey to reach DISTRICT 20 DIRECTOR the District Director post. In the beginning I started my leadership journey as VP Public Relations and it was my first time to know what is Public Relations, how can I do posters, how can I publicize my club all over the District and outside toastmasters. Then by reading and by working and by being mentored from more experienced members I learnt a lot of things - one of them was how to do posters and using the tools like graphics and many other tools that I never used before to do this job. Then when I was Division Director - how to work in a team, how to guide people without being authorized, without being a boss on them.

A lot of life changing journey especially when I reached the District Director. When you feel that you want to do something but you cannot do it by yourself, what you can is to direct people to do it and to explain to them the benefits of doing it and how they can do it properly rather than doing it by yourself which is more difficult. It is really worth it to learn and to guide others to be better communicators and better leaders. AD: What is the most memorable experience this term? DD: The most memorable experience was the DTAC in Kuwait. After 8 years, after the last DTAC in Kuwait in 2010, we did it in Kuwait this year. We were so happy that most of the members from Bahrain and Qatar attended the DTAC and they were happy about what they saw. Many new members they approached me and said they did not know that Toastmasters is that beautiful and networking was amazing in DTAC. One of the most memorable moment was that to induct the two Districts. District 20 team and District 116P team, and I wish them all the best for their journey to serve the members of their 3 countries to their level best. I think there will be another memorable moment when we all achieve our goals of the term of this toastmaster year, we will celebrate again if not physically, it will be virtually the achievements that all of us did this year to reach Excellence. AD: Your opinion about Area 22 performance this year DD: I would like to congratulate Area 22 Director TM Riana and all leaders and members of Area 22 for the great achievements that they did this year. First of all, being a President Distinguished Area with 4 clubs distinguished all above, 2 of them President Distinguished clubs, 1 Select Distinguished and 1 Distinguished club and am sure Distinguished club will thrive to become President Distinguished also. This by itself is a great achievement. Also adding new club is a challenge but this club comes in a real tight time, one month before the end of the year and the Area/Division becomes President Distinguished Area and Division by this club which is also a great achievement.

TM Riana was there in all the activities of Toastmasters, she helped her clubs to reach excellence. She did her job very well. She was one of the earliest Area Directors to do the visits and submit the reports. The renewals of Area 22 was always at the beginning compared to other Areas in the District. This is a very great successful year for Area 22. Well done. You become a role model for other Areas to follow. I am so proud and the whole District is proud of Area 22, Division H. AD: Your advice or message to future leaders of this Area DD: My message to future leaders and toastmasters of Area 22. Leaders we are here to serve. Serving depends on achieving the goals of each and every member in your Area and in your respected club. If you did that, if you really strive to achieve or fulfill the goals of each member of your club you will reach the excellence without much effort. I always say in Toastmasters there is 3 F’s. 1st Focus on your goals while you are in this position, and how can you fulfill the requirements of this position either as President, member of the Excom, or Area Director. 2nd Feedback - Always seek for feedback to improve the weak points that you may have and to reach higher level that you may not expect that you can reach. Feedback is like GPS for all roads that drive us to success. 3rd Fun – Always have fun because without fun there is no Toastmasters. As the Founder of Toastmasters said, we are learning better in the times of enjoyment. I wish all the new leaders of Area 22 and clubs of Area 22 all the best in their journey and wish them a year full of enjoyment, learning and achievements.

District 20 Program Quality Director Message Riana Pinto Area Director -Area 22 At the outset on behalf of District 20 and my behalf hearty congratulations for leading Area 22 to President Distinguished Area status with all Clubs Distinguished. It is a rare honor to achieve as Area Director and something you should be proud of as a Toastmaster leader. I know that it is the culmination of hard work and focus towards achieving goals by the entire team from Club leadership onwards. Vince Lombardi said, “If winning isn't anything, why they keep score.” I always propagate to celebrate success. The celebration is no sign of arrogance. In fact, it brings awareness of power, confidence, fulfillment, and authenticity of accomplishment. The celebration gives a sense of value for the effort and consequent results. I am sure that serving as District official should be one of the best experiences of your life. That doesn’t undermine its difficulties. Doing the right things need knowledge, skills, and courage. If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

Toastmasters is a great organization. We have proven products that have gone through the state of the art enhancement through Pathways. We have members who inherently are in pursuit of self-improvement. Toastmasters provide opportunities to expand and contribute to shaping our world through lives of people who we touch.

And don’t forget to share your experiences with your successors in the leadership about your learnings. They will feel like they were a part of it as well and try to emulate and sustain the success in their term. This will be the way you get to leave your legacy as a Toastmaster leader. Straight from the Heart - Area Director Dear Area 22 members, After an exciting and exuberant toastmaster year, we are drawing closer to the end of our term 2017-18 with just few days to go in June. It is time to savour the fruits of our hard work and achievements of this year going through a quick flashback before they turn to be history. Year 2017-18 has been a roller coaster year for Area 22 members with lots of achievements to celebrate. Beginning of our term, District 20 announced many PQD, CGD and PR awards and all our clubs focused to achieve these awards and strived to achieve them.

TM RIANA PINTO DIRECTOR, AREA 22

There was an excellent participation by our members in all Area and Division events and at all trainings conducted by the Division which has helped the clubs to improve the quality of club meetings. All 7 club Excom officers of Zeal Club and Mindtune Waves club attended both the Club Officers Training and achieved Super COT 7 award which is a great leadership quality in their leadership journey. All clubs in our Area had quality meetings, maintained good membership strength, followed their club success plan and achieved their goals. On achievement of clubs educational goals, Area 22 achieved District 20 “High Motivator Area” Award. Clubs performance was reflected in their DCP points. Zeal club performed very well in its first year to achieve President Distinguished status while Konkan club succeeded in maintaining President Distinguished status as in past, Mindtune Waves achieved Select Distinguished status and ICC Advanced achieved Distinguished status which was a truly great accomplishment for Area 22. With the charter of the new HSE Toastmasters Club, Area 22 achieved President Distinguished Status and also won “Area Pinnacle Award” which was a rare feat and a crowning moment for our Area. During this year, Zeal and Mindtune Waves clubs both conducted YLP for young students and Zeal also succeeded in chartering Zeal Gavels Club. This is a great step in building the future of young minds and simultaneously demonstrating great leadership skills. Mindtune Waves club succeeded in conducting a successful Open House. Area 22 was privileged to have the presence of District 20 Director at the Zeal YLP Finale and attend Mindtune Club regular meeting and was able to witness the quality of our clubs.

Area Confluence Meeting conducted at the end of the first term on 17 December 2017 was a wonderful opportunity and a learning experience to all new members from senior members and to build a good rapport and network with other club members. This helped the leaders to organize meeting jointly, sharing meeting roles and arranging education modules presenters and get training as a preparation for upcoming contests. Area 22 Contests was indeed a “Champions Challenge” and brought the best from our champions of our Area. It was a very successful and well organized event which received appreciation from many for the quality of the Contest. Kudos to our teamwork and to my Area Excom.

At Division H “Harmony” Annual Contest, Area 22 was well represented with 6 participants contested at the Division level and TM Girija Chari from Zeal club bagged 3 rd place in Evaluation contest. Membership growth was excellent in all the clubs this year as Zeal added 19, Konkan added 18, Mindtune Waves added 18 and ICC Advanced added 5 members totaling to 60 members and helped Area to win “Area Super Membership” Award. Mindtune Waves club was also successful in achieving PR awards for their interesting Monthly Flyers which is a gateway to introduce and publicize the club events. Area Flyer for Confluence meeting also won the award. On my leadership role, this year has been one of the most challenging year and thoroughly an enriching experience. Communicating with all the club leaders through my frequent club visits, driving the excoms to give their best performance, delegating duties, working in a team and encountering various challenges was truly a learning experience and boosted me tremendously to hone my leadership skills. Interacting with various District and Division leaders has built my confidence and nurtured my interpersonal skills to a larger perspective. It was a new learning experience for me in building new clubs negotiating with Spanish community people in moving forward to start the club which was a prospective club while I took over but did not materialize. All these learning did not go waste as I finally succeeded in chartering HSE club for the HSE professionals. Personally it has helped me to grow leaps and bounds and to be a better communicator and leader. “Success in life comes when you simply refuse to give up, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure and loss only act as motivation” - Dreamquotes. All challenges that came across kept motivating me to achieve more. It is truly heartening to see overall achievements and contributions done by our Presidents along with their Excoms and am very grateful to such a vibrant team of leaders for supporting the Area goals.

I place my sincere thanks to my Assistant Area Director - Program & Quality TM Jovita Periera for supporting and shouldering the responsibility of Confluence meeting and Contests. Assistant Area Director Club Growth TM Jaffer Murichandi in supporting all Area events and in building new clubs. Area PR TM Shameer P. His contributions are exemplary. Area Treasurer TM Eric Monthero has helped the Area in managing our funds and maintaining accounts statements. Area Secretary TM Diana Serrao supported us in keeping our Area council minutes and records. Capturing all the year’s special moments in this “Impressions” newsletter was a dream which has come true. I thank profoundly TM Shameer for making it a reality. I thank all the Presidents and members who have contributed to this newsletter and leaving your impressions in it. Relax and enjoy reading these wonderful achievements of Area 22 and as soon it will be renamed as Area 4 from July 2018. Thrilling year is coming to an end but let the thrill continue as we handover the baton to the new leaders. Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life, its about what you inspire others to do. May it be the same motto of our incoming leaders and continue to achieve excellence. Wishing the best to all the members and club leaders of Area 4, Div B, District 116P and wish them a successful toastmaster year . Aim high and surely you will soar high.

Asst. Director, Program & Quality Message Congratulations to Area 22 and its leaders for a successful year! It was indeed an honor and privilege to serve as the as the Assistant Area Director, Program & Quality for Area 22. To be the Contest Manger for the year 2017 - 2018 was a challenge I humbly accepted. It was truly an enriching experience to work under the dynamic leadership of TM Riana Pinto. The Annual Area Speech Contest for the four clubs Konkan Toastmasters Club (KTC), ICC Advanced Toastmasters Club (ICCA), Mindtune Waves Toastmasters Club (MTW) and Zeal Toastmasters Club (ZTC) was held on Friday 9th February 2018 at Olive InternaJOVITA PEREIRA tional School with magnificence. The contest in all the four categoASST. AREA DIRECTOR, PQ ries, Humorous, Table Topics, Evaluation and International was enthralling. The Champions battled well making it a thorny task for the judges to decide the winners. The event was well appreciated by all for the great organization and meticulous planning. A brilliant melody of hard work, planning and preparation was produced by all the role-players to add splendor to a stunning success of the Area Contest. It was indeed a Champions’ Challenge. As the Contest Manger, it was a wonderful experience to execute the duties and responsibilities of putting together a contest. As a contestant in the past years, I have not had a chance to experience this side of a contest. Truly, a learning experience that I will cherish for life. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever”, my humble message to all toastmasters in Qatar is to take part in all activities, projects, contests and roles entrusted upon you. No one but you should take charge and be the guardian of your own personality development. My heartfelt wish is for every toastmaster of Area 22 to reach the pinnacle of success and be proud and distinguished in the TM fraternity around the world.

All the very best! Jovita Pereira Assistant Area Director, Program & Quality Area 22, Division H

The Crowning Moment - Journey to DTM Beatles singer John Lennon once said –‘ Life is what happens to you when you are busy making other plans.’ I too was busy enjoying toastmasters when somebody reminded me that I was pleasantly close to achieving the DTM Title. The rest is history!! My first glimpse into the world of toastmasters occurred in a GAVELS club meeting. I was there to drop my son but decided to stay and see. That meeting was an eye-opener for me. The jaunty gaveliers reminded me of my school days when I too was a voracious speaker. That very day, I decided to check out an adult Toastmasters club. SUSAN MATHEWS DTM

SPECIAL PROGRAMS OFFICER

DIVISION H I signed up in ICC EVES Toastmasters club in October 2009. I rarely missed club meetings and soon found my passion in public speaking. Though I was not keen on taking up leadership roles, I was soon pulled into the club EXCOM and found myself becoming treasurer, then VP Education and later the Club President. In 2013, I was obliged to join ICC ADVANCED club and also took up secretary and VP Education roles there. In 2016, I was offered the role of Area Director and decided to give it a go. This was perhaps the most challenging role that I took up but it was also the most rewarding as our area became ‘President’s Distinguished’ that year. Another highlight in this journey was the starting of Zeal Toastmasters club in 2017. It was very satisfying to put together an exuberant group of fresh new Toastmasters and I am delighted by all the opportunities that this club is offering to the community.

However, the most outstanding feature of my journey, I feel, has been my involvement in Gavel clubs. It started when I was assigned counselor of ICC Gavels in 2011. I found the assignment exciting and I continue to be associated with gavels even today. It was my privilege to start two new gavel clubs – ICC EVES GAVELS in 2015 and ZEAL GAVELS in 2017 and also serve as the Division Gavels Coordinator in 2017-18. The opportunity to mentor children is an enriching experience that I always cherish. All in all, my journey to DTM has been an adventure of a lifetime. Attainment of the DTM title was indeed a crowning moment in this journey but the drive has been much more enjoyable than the destination. I know that there is a lot more to learn and experience and I wait with baited breath for new opportunities in Toastmasters.

PATHWAYS – Learning Experience THE PATH TO SUCCESS!

In the modern world good communication is the life line to success. Naturally effective, crisp and to the point communication plays a very important role. Public speaking is the best way to improve one’s communication and leadership skills. We all want to be successful. My earnest advise is to join the Toastmasters and start on Pathways. The program is amazing. More than 5 years of research, professional inputs, trial runs and revamping has resulted in the Final version. Launched in our District in April 2018!

MI FARID DTM PATHWAYS AMBASSODOR

Being a Pathways Ambassador I felt a moral duty to lead by example. Accordingly I enrolled in the Pathways program and chose Strategic Relationships and Team Collaboration paths. At ICC Advanced Club, we were privileged to have 4 DTM’s giving their Ice Breakers along with 2 other members in April 2018.

As I advocate all speeches have to be prepared and rehearsed. I was lucky to have a Toastmaster in the form of my IT Manager – Ashfaq Deshmukh. I presented my speech at least 6 times before him. The Evaluator had 2 remarks for improvement. 1) Should have talked more of children and college life! (in 4 to 6 minutes!!!) 2) Should have better Vocal Variety. So next meeting I presented my Project 2 The purpose of this speech is for the member to demonstrate that he or she has applied the feedback received from his or her first speech. Accordingly I spoke on “Nostalgic Pranks!” I achieved the objective of talking on my college life with loads of vocal variety! The Evaluator while appreciating the improvement felt more could have been achieved. The ONLY reason I am sharing this is – YOU MAYBE A DTM BUT THERE IS SCOPE FOR IMPROVEMENT!

project Mentorship is an important part of the Toastmasters experience. Many of us have benefitted from being mentored, mentoring others or both. I’m excited to announce that there is a new mentoring program available: the Pathway Mentor Program. It’s a structured program that will help you identify when you are ready to be a mentor, understand best practices for mentoring and practice mentoring on a small and large scale. You will be able to enroll in this program once you complete Level 2 of your path. There is no extra charge for pursuing the Pathways Mentor Program. There are four projects in the program, including “Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring” at Level 2, which everyone will complete. In conclusion I can only state, man never stops learning. As Eartha Kitt, the legendary American Actress aptly said, “I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma.”

Passion for Art My passion for art sparked at an early age of 7. It engrossed me fully during my childhood. Gradually studies took over my passion of art. Life continued‌. At the age of 37 my childhood hobby was reborn as an artist. I started blending my administrative skills groomed during MBA with a touch of artistic heart. Passion for art and creativity started reflecting in my work. I realized artistic thinking is a joyful and effective way to create break through solutions to all kind of problems. I expanded my creativity in a quite diversified area such as Lino art, Web designing and Print Production, Oil painting and Silk

Painting. I’m a nature loving artist and very much connected to it. My brush loaded with color says whole story about my journey towards meditation and creativity. I PARUL SRIVATSAVA want to see people VPE Elect (Zeal Club) smiling, fresh, healthy and energetic when they look into my work. I was lucky enough to exhibit my work in few International Exhibitions.

In Toastmasters club one finds the cocktail of chemicals of pleasure. Neurochemicals like Dopamine, Serotonin, Endorphins, Oxytocin are released and raised in the brain while toastmasters set goals and attain them, feel significant with friends, get connected while sharing light moments. Thunderous applause given, wonderful words said and written, language of appreciation and certificates of inspiration create a positive state in the toastmasters club which nourishes the Happiness Tree of the mind. “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with- Jim Rohn quotes. Win your life. Do you want to do something in life?, do you want to become someone, do you want to win? If the answer is ‘yes’, you have nothing to do but start doing something. People are there to make you win. A few years ago, a friend of mine told me, "I have the desire to do something and win in my life”… Who stops you?, I asked “ I am alone, I don’t know what to do and how to do,” he complained. If you don’t know what to do, if you don’t have any particular plan in your mind, start cleaning our streets from tomorrow? Who knows, after a period of time, you will become a winner”, I casually remarked. Believe me? Some magic happened. He took my remarks seriously and started cleaning the streets. In the first day, he was alone. The next day, a few more joined him. It increased day by day until it became a team of over hundred people dedicated to social service, under the leadership of my friend. He became popular, a champion of social service, which further made him become the Panchayat president….and a respected leader. So it is very simple. If you want to do something great in your life, begin somewhere, do your part with dedication and you shall get the support of others to AREA 22 NEWSLETTER [JUNE-2018]

win. Sorties of success never end. I know a lady who ran an ordinary tea shop with extraordinary skills to make excellent tea. She wanted to make it big…...really big, but did not know what to do. Someone advised her to serve her special tea to potential customers, free of cost. Her tea did all the talking, and she is now the talk of the town; the owner of several tea shops all around the town, a hero and an icon of success. Look at me! Earnest and enthusiastic as ever. But it took all these inspirations for me to join Toastmasters; a fraternity of helpful people, which helped me develop as a good reader, writer and communicator. Some of my project speeches have already been published, and others are ready to be published. I got the opportunity to speak outside Toastmasters and publish around ten articles on various subjects in newspapers. Sure, I did not do it alone. Some helped me with the speech scripts, some released my speeches in newsletters and some helped publish my articles in newspapers. After my 9th project speech, I hoped and wished for an audience of 200 for my 10th speech to become a Competent Communicator. I am blessed that I delivered my 10th speech before an audience of around two hundred, ever supportive people

in an ‘OPEN HOUSE’ event. Friends! Since I began doing something, I have been on a winning streak. Pretty soon , I will be addressing a much bigger audience and widening my horizons….of course with the help of the Toastmasters and friends. So, take the first step of doing something, now. You will find people queueing up to help you. If you don’t have money to start something. There are many things which doesn’t require money to start. Reading is an example. You start reading books. Read one book, then two, three, four, five, six. By the time you complete reading ten or twenty books, you would have become an eminent person in the society. Don’t keep saying I am bored, start doing. You will have different types of people around you to support. You will make amazing achievements. Dear friends, do it now. You will definitely win. My Journey in Toastmasters A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. My first step of the Toastmasters journey started by attending one of the Toastmasters meeting back in September 2016. I achieved many professional certificates as part of my career progress, all of which are directly related to my work as an internal auditor, nevertheless, I felt that there is something missing, something which will not only enhance my knowledge and experience, but something that has an impact on my personality and behavioral skills.

the learning experience will be maximized due to many reasons, to make few; their members are mostly seniors and champions, the club did not have a big number of members, so speech slots can be easily available upon request.

ASHAM AL MASRI CC KONKAN CLUB

One day I heard from my brother about Toastmasters, where people gather and talk about themselves, so I searched about it on the web and found some clubs here in Qatar where I reside. The next thing I did was to send those nearby clubs an email asking them if I can join their next meeting as a guest. Although there was warmth in their replies in welcoming, I felt more encouraged to attend along with my friends.

I joined in October 2017, and it took me until April 2018 to complete my Competent communicator manual. This fast track achievement cannot be attributed to my willingness alone, but also to the proper direction, encouragement, and openness practiced by Excom members specifically, and the humble interaction and friendly comments of every member in the club during the meetings.

After attending several meeting with different clubs, I decided to join Konkan club, where I felt

Toastmasters experience is a unique one, there is no one teacher, and everyone is learning.
