Message from District Director
“We must suit our methods to our needs. Today's
emergency may be tomorrow’s opportunity.” - Dr. Ralph Smedley
C Sundaresan Rajeswar, DTM District Director, 116 P
ongratulations to all members of Area 5 for becoming Presidents Distinguished Area that defined the success of your term. With chartering of the new club, Mindtune Malayalam targeting at a specific community this feat was achieved. The mentors and sponsors of the new club committed themselves to selfless services. The district appreciates leadership’s dedication, commitment to the task, and dependability. Thanks to all members for the enthusiasm, engagement, and emotional bonding with the Toastmasters program.
At the outset, let me also congratulate everyone for your individual and collective contribution to take our District 116 Qatar to be the first and only “Smedley Distinguished District” in the world. It is a historic achievement for the newest District to be on the top out of 143 countries with 100+ districts. The big message that Qatar is more than a mere District; it is a Toastmasters destination. It is not the perfect leader, but the perfect commitment that succeeds. I should also thank members who contributed immensely to the success of the first ever District Toastmasters Annual Conference (DTAC 2019) that indicated that we as a district could achieve tremendous success together as a team. Maya Angelou said we could build a legacy not from one thing but everything. Many of you may not have an idea what your legacy will be. Your legacy will be every life you touch.” As Toastmasters, we have the inherent advantage to create our legacy. We serve something invisible (better human being) that is greater than oneself. One of the most celebrated addresses is from a person petrified of public speaking, an American baseball player, in front of 69000 fans in the year 1939. Henry Louis Gehrig’s started “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” These words resonate the same deep feelings in me about blessings in my life, the graciousness of people I dealt with, and my abundant gratitude. Warm Regards, Sundaresan Rajeswar, DTM District Director 116P | 2018-19 #Passion.Performance.Progress

Message from Division Director
“Have a vision”
“Vision is the art of seeing what is invisible to others.” -Jonathan Swift
I
understood the true meaning of these words while watching a talk show, in which they invited people who have Sunita Saini given something back to society by their simple work. The Division B Director host said, “Please welcome Divyanshu. He loves to do paraglide, swim, and skydive.” I wondered what was so great if a person loves adventure sports. Then Divyanshu walked in, and suddenly there was pin drop silence, and everyone’s jaws were on the floor. Divyanshu was holding a white stick in his hand. He was blind. When asked how he managed to overcome this hurdle, he said, “I have lost my sight, not my vision.” a simple thought with so much depth in it. In life, it is essential to have a vision because vision doesn’t even help us fulfill our dreams but also guides us. If you have a vision, you know what you are doing, why you are doing it, and how you can get it done. All of us are blessed with everything, and yet we have hundreds of complaints. For our failures, we often blame circumstances or people. Sometimes we stop ourselves from taking the first step towards our dreams. We don’t do things because nobody has done it before. Just imagine if Divyanshu would have stopped himself because no blind person has ever gone paragliding. His dreams would have died with him. But he didn’t listen to the world; he listened to his inner voice. It was his attitude that made him achieve whatever he dreamt of. Attitude is extremely important in life. People with a positive attitude always look at a half-filled glass with water and say that it is half full, and not half empty. They fill the remainder of the glass with their hard work. On the other hand, people with a negative attitude will always feel, “Oh! The glass is half empty,” and they will never work towards filling the empty half. As Charles R. Swindoll said, “Life is 10% what happens to you, and 90% how you react to it.” We always have choices in our lives; it’s up to us to take that first step towards our dreams. Transform with a high impetus
E
very victory starts with connection. This is how a relationship begins and grows. Mastering how to connect VC Mashood with others helps Area 5 Director us to be a better friend, parent, spouse, professional, leader, and eventually an enhanced human being. It allows us to make a more significant and prettier impact on others life and greatly enriches people around us and make our world a better place. After “connect to communicate”, now toastmasters fraternity is in the process to “connect” with new leaders and members for the new term. If all combinations are not clear, then it may affect the “connection.” It has been an honor and pleasure to be the leader of one of the most diverse Areas with multi-talented members and clubs. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all club leaders, and members under Area-5 for their commitment, support, and interest showed during this term, which derived for many achievements and added various surprises. Hope “Connect” will be a motive element to begin the new term. The participation and involvement in DTAC, Division and Area contests and other programs from Clubs under Area 5 are commendable. They not only attended as a delegate, but also many members contributed in many organizing teams with their dedication and commitments. Area 5 Newsletter “Connect”
Very happy to share that Qatar Malayalam, FCC Vanitha and Mindtune Waves become president distinguished and Qatar Laughter Yoga become Select Distinguished. BC toastmasters club conducted various community program and YLP sessions, which become a motivating factor for many to join the club. The unforgettable Area confluence meeting at Olive school and Area contest at Crown Plaza hotel made impacts to all attendees. We had the privilege of successfully launching the Speech Reality Show in association with Mindtune waves toastmasters club (An innovative opportunity to participate in speech contests for all the people in all walks of life). Another highlight of this year is the arrival of a new baby in our area, Mindtune Waves Malayalam toastmasters club. I want to thank TM Basheer Hassan and team for this initiative and TM Noufal Murichandi and team for their efforts for the successful conduct of Area contest. Last but not least, my dear Area Excom members, you all have been a great source of support in all my endeavors and movement. I appreciate TM Shameer PH for all the efforts for bringing “Connect” with all highlights of clubs and area activities. With Regards, VC MASHOOD Area 5 Director

An Impromptu Question to IPIP An Impromptu Question to Immediate Past International President Balaraj Arunaselvam, DTM Division-D Director Rajesh VC, DTM on behalf of Area 5 Director Mashood VC asked an impromptu question in one of the club meetings to the Immediate Past International President Balaraj Arunaselvam, DTM .
Question: You have travelled all the way from Srilanka to Qatar, Thank you so much. What was your imagination and expectation about Toastmasters in Qatar? Answer: I Came to Qatar because of one man’s persistence for the last two years. Now I have fulfilled the promise that I kept two years ago, before he finishes his job. (Past PQD and current District Director Rajeshwar Sunderesan DTM had invited him to Qatar 2 years ago). I had committed to come to Qatar and my relationship with District Officers is very strong and it’s a pleasure for me to be in Qatar fulfilling the commitment. I feel proud to talk about Qatar toastmasters, I see the District being Smedley Distinguished District and Toastmasters fraternity have grown very much. Formation of new clubs and I see very new clubs being formed have become Distinguished. I would like to give one message, which is not about the District, but about the clubs. Clubs are the place, where we come to learn. It’s very essential we track our progress. The Pathways in Toastmasters have all the provision to track our progress. 5 years later when we see our speech videos we could understand where we stand and track the progress. This is the only organization which I know that provides an enormous opportunity to grow. Toastmasters is the place where Leaders are made. Thank you so much. Area 5 Newsletter “Connect”

The Wait
S
he waited and waited for him well beyond midnight, with dreams and desires about the beautiful moments they would share after his arrival. She was prepared to do anything to please him, even if was to go for an outing at the wee hours of the morning. She had been preparing for hours on end for that moment, washing and preparing clothes to suit any activity he would be game for. Be it for the bed, jogging, exercise or a romantic dinner, he could pick his choice. To match the mood, four pair of shoes; sports, executive, social and the special one, which he calls it the non – occasions one and she calls it the mad time shoe, were polished and kept ready.
Basheer Kavalappara Pres. Mindtune Malayalam
She went through his toilet kit carefully to see if his tooth brush, shaving kit and all other accessories are in place, lest he decides to take her on a long journey. She had been holding her breath since it dawned until it struck midnight. Cooking took most of her time, for she was keen do all cutting and slicing jobs all by herself, leaving none to him if he offered to help. She couldn’t bear the sight of any sharp object touching him directly or indirectly. And she was so possessive not to let even a small morsel of food go down his throat, cooked by someone else.
Utmost care was given to the rest rooms in the house. She dusted it time and again to maintain hygiene. It took her an hour or so to find his toothbrush, which was randomly thrown if the storeroom before he left home the last time. Thankfully, the shoe polish was right before her in the storeroom, saving time. By the time she was over with the preparations, she was so exhausted even to go up to the gate to receive him, as she always did. Yet, she forced herself to the gate, half asleep. They were a newly married couple, yet to know each other intimately. Quite too early even to ask that common question, “Any good news:” The time they had together was so short to have fond memories to cherish during the days to come. She was just out of her adolescence, away from her near dear ones. A fresh mind, yet to know about her role as a newly-wed girl.
When time passed, her excitement was on the rise. Time ticked away, and he did not return. When anxiety turned into agony, she kept on asking, “What did I do to deserve this agonizing wait, don’t I deserve anything good in life? "Whether she was answered or not, nothing happened in her life except the long, uncertain wait. After prolonged investigations, it was concluded that it was careless driving that lead to the fatal accident that night, taking the life of her husband. Mindtune Waves Toastmasters Club
After
its inception in 2015, The Mindtune Ecowaves Toastmasters Club has been steadily growing. After being in the Select Distinguished Status Club during the first three years of functioning, the Club has jumped up to the President Distinguished Club Status this year.
As a result of the restless hard work of the entire team for the years passed, the Club has successfully sponsored one new Club, the Mindtune Ecowaves Malayalam Club which is already known Noufal Murchandi as the second daughter of the Mindtune Ecowaves Club. The MW TM Club President Club conducted an open house this year for around over 300 people exploiting the opportunity the Mindtune Global Committee had allotted to the Club at their Global Summit when 28 people registered their names on the spot for joining the Mindtune Malayalam Club. During the year 2018-19, one member achieved the Competent Leader Award, and another member achieved Competent Communicator Award. 8 Club members completed level one from the newly rolled up pathways while two completed two levels, one completed three levels, and one another completed the fourth and fifth levels. We published two newsletters this year with write-ups of the club members. There was no any missing in the number of meetings. Two meetings were conducted each month. One club meeting was held in a boat in cornice beach. The new member induction ceremony was held in the beginning of the term. A special workshop was held for pathways selection for new members. Achievements of members were recognized on time. Two members who achieved triple crown were recognized in a public meeting attended by around over 100 people. Trophies were distributed for contest winners. The Club recognized TM Savitha Urwa for winning Area 5 Evaluation Contest.

Do Truthfully and Conquer
The
biggest privilege I had in Toastmasters is representing Division H at DTAC Kuwait for International speech District contest. There are many factors to look upon when you are getting out of your country for a title.
Speech Mentoring I would ride to TM Philip Cherian and Pavithra Phiilip’s house to Nufaisa MR learn how to communicate with less words and pauses, work on my mannerism and body language. TM Anil Nair, DTM Lesley Mathew had also played a significant role in crafting the speech. It’s when you give your speech for review to others you understand that the words and lines you hold dear to you don’t make an impact on others.
Visa application The visa process was like a suspense thriller. Don’t wait for the final call. I had to postpone my flight on the way to the airport because of it.
On set learning At DTAC, Pres Vasilev’s, 2013 world champion of public speaking, keynote speech was one of the best speeches. It went on for 45 minutes of audience engagement, humor, inspiration through which he conveyed how he had become the champion. That was when I realized that I didn’t even do 5% of preparation as he had done. Each contest is a learning experience of trial and error. You get lots of advice when you are getting ready to deliver your speech like; don’t get advice from many- ask for suggestions ,include personal stories- don’t talk more about you, keep the suspense till end- let your first para speak all about your speech, don’t dramatise- act it out, and many more. I think there is no one particular way for a winning speech. You may win or lose but make sure you win the hearts of the audience by being yourself and living the moment. Nothing is more heartwarming than random people coming over and saying they still remember me with the balloons and talks about my speech. That’s what a winning speech is for me. Nufaisa MR Asst. My DTAC Experience
DTAC (District Toastmasters Annual ConferMy ence) Experience … Since I joined Toastmasters three years before, every year I heard about DTAC. It was my dream to attend this conference and experience the event. However, unfortunately, it wasn't possible till the last DTAC because every time the DTAC was held outside Qatar, and this time, fortunately, my dream was accomJaffer Muruchandi plished. The last DTAC held in Qatar was mesmerizing. I had witnessed it for two wonderful days, and it was all well-organized. The DTAC chair DTM Safeer Azeez and the entire team who were behind the success of such a great function had done it all perfect. Most impressive sessions were the keynote speeches on each day and International speeches of most talented speakers who performed in speech contest and also the Evaluation, Humorous, Table topic contests, group training session, and award ceremony, etc... Those combine turned on the beauty of the function. Another advantage I feel grateful is the presence of the former Energy Minister of Qatar and world champion of public speaking Darren Tay Wen Jie and also the great leaders from District 116, Divisions, Areas and Clubs. Honestly, it was worth all the time and efforts, and the team truly deserve a lot of appreciation. It was a lifetime learning experience.

Benefits of Martial Arts
Martial
arts can be a discipline and a form of selfdefense, that is useful for all ages. There are scientific studies, proven the benefits for the body and mind. Studying martial arts is good for mind and health. It is not only a great activity that keeps participants physically active, but it gives a sense of achievement and ethics. Learning martial arts, strengthens the body, mind, and spirit. Any form of martial arts requires a combination of speed, flexibility, and physical strength.
Abdulla Poyil
Even if you have no previous experience in martial arts, it is still a great activity to pick up even your age is 40 or 50 plus.
All of us might have seen either Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan's performances; then you might have thought about it, as aggressive fighting. However, there are many medically proven benefits, ethical and disciplinary values in the martial arts. It is a continuous process, and there are many varieties of martial arts like Kungfu, Karate, Wushu, Taekwondo, Kalari etc.
Some of the main benefits are: Full Body Workout: Martial arts are high-aerobic workouts, which use every muscle group in the body. Your stamina, muscle tone, flexibility, balance, and strength all will be improved through martial arts.
Healthy lifestyle: Due to the total-body nature of a martial arts workout, tons of calories are burnt during every class practice. However, you will also find that your natural eating signals become better regulated so that food cravings will disappear, and you will eat less as a result.
Improved cardiovascular health: Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular system is by participating in activities that stress the heart, such as martial arts. Also, it will help to reduce weight. (Contd‌.)
Area 5 Newsletter “Connect
16
Self-confidence: Due to goal setting, positive encouragement, and respect for values that are part of all martial arts programs, the most significant benefit usually reported by martial arts students is greater selfconfidence. You become more comfortable in all situations – whether you are in danger or only doing a task that takes you beyond your comfort zone — and you will discover you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.
Focus: As Bruce Lee pointed out, behind the punches, kicks, and knees, a true martial artist learns to sit with himself and see where his weaknesses are. As a martial artist, your will learn what it is to be still, challenged, and focused. Also, some exercises for the eyes which will help to reduce the long site and short site vision issues.
Morals and values: Martial arts wisdom has it that after consistent practice, one becomes less impulsive and aggressive towards others. It reminds students of the right attitude, the frame of mind and virtues to strive for inside and outside.
Muscle: By participating in martial arts, you can significantly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your body. The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently, the more calories you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and promote weight loss.
Better mood: Researchers have found that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve your mood.
The Main doubts you may have now in your mind are: -
What is the age limit?? There is no maximum age limit …
-
Can I go for this, as I am not fit?? The beauty of martial arts is that it is for everyone, no matter the age, and it is tailor-made to suit anyone of any fitness level. Overall, martial arts training can ultimately reverse or slow down the signs of aging, which is something we should all strive for. Abdulla Poyil Mindtune Waves Toastmasters Club

Pathways where leaders walk together - where
leaders walk together
The
word “pathways” is now echoed all around; mentioned in club meetings, asserted in area level sittings, discussed in division level confluences, trumpeted in district convergences.
Of late, pathways are well-known to all Toastmasters. Now Everybody knows that pathways are where leaders walk together. No unbreakable Balkees Nasser mountains are there on the way. No more confusion is there about pathways. Confusion has become history. The scenario now is of clarity and lucidity, simplicity, and ease. Toastmasters has never been philosophic. It has always had a practical approach. Pathways’ is a new syllabus of practical exercises and training sessions. Training materials ranging from readable to visual, can easily be downloaded from the site. It consists of 10 courses. Each course is called a path. Each path is a composition of 14 projects which you can complete by delivering 19 speeches consuming total 127 minutes + plus two practical works. To complete each project, one has to deliver 19 speeches, which necessitates reading of the project descriptions of around 250 pages and watching many a video. Pathways help you identify many things related to your style of living as a human being and leader. It helps you style your leadership, know the importance of mentoring, encourage you to face social situations, makes you deliver a keynote speech on any subject of your specialization. Also, you get to lead a ‘question and answer’ session towards the completion of your path. In short, as you pursue the path, you undergo many trainings. The most interesting thing is that you engage 19 evaluators for a minimum of 38 hours to give you feedback. Fellow Toastmasters have to join their hands for a minimum 38 times to applaud you. Your VP Education undertakes huge efforts to ensure smooth completion of your speeches. Toastmasters remind us of our school life when we received thunderous applauses, medals, trophies, and certificate of appreciations. Here in Toastmasters, you will see only appreciation. There is no one to make you feel bad. People are here to clap for you, hug you, shake your hands, appreciate your efforts, applaud your achievements, congratulate you for your progress. Toastmasters is a warehouse where trophies, laurels, awards, and mementos are stored in abundance. You have to do only one thing. Start doing. People are here to make you win.
