GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Support In Advancing WIT’s Mission For 14 years, the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) has been the only organization whose mission is to encourage and advance the employment of women in trucking. We have always represented ALL women in the industry, or as we like to say: the women who design, build, fix, drive, or own trucks.

Ellen Voie, CAE, President & CEO Women In Trucking Association, Inc.

™

Since 2007, we have been the lone voice for our members, but now that is changing. We are being joined by other groups who share our goal to bring more women into the industry. We are extremely proud to be an integral part of three national initiatives. In 2019, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) created the Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC) charter to establish a committee to “provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation … about needs, objectives, plans, approaches, content, and accomplishments of the motor carrier safety programs carried out by the Administration and motor carrier safety regulations.”

broadcast and digital media to encourage these careers in trucking, aviation, rail and maritime. More specific to trucking, we have been involved in the “Promoting Women in Trucking Workforce Act” to direct the administrator of the FMCSA to establish a “Women of Trucking Advisory Board.” Under this bill, the board would identify barriers to entry for women in the trucking industry, work across organizations and companies to coordinate formal education and training programs, and help identify and establish training and mentorship programs for women in the industry. We are thrilled to be involved in all three of these initiatives. These are opportunities to advance our mission at a higher level and to include other stakeholders in our quest to increase the participation of women in transportation-related careers.

This year, then Secretary Elaine Chao appointed me to the MCSAC to serve with 24 other industry members to serve a twoyear term. Additionally, for the first time, a driver subcommittee was formed to serve under the direction of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association’s leader, Todd Spencer. Three of our Image Team members, Deb LaBree, Kellylynn McLaughlin and Angelique Temple were appointed to serve on this subcommittee. We look forward to representing you, our members, in both these groups. The legislature has recognized the need to attract more drivers, pilots, engineers, and operators. We joined 30 other groups to support the “Promoting Service in Transportation Act” to create a series of public service announcements for print,

COVER STORY: Transportation’s Perception Problem

Recruiting the Younger Generation:

An Industry Perception Problem

In 2016, Millennials became the largest portion of the American workforce, overtaking both Gen-Xers and Boomers. As the transportation industry faces record-breaking labor shortages in the next few years, and with the average age of truck drivers inching closer toward retirement, it’s critical to start recruiting the next generation of transportation professionals now.

Labor shortages in transportation are nothing new. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 108,400 new trucking jobs to fill by 2026. To put that in perspective, there are currently 3.5 million truck drivers, which includes approximately 500,000 long-haul drivers. The shortage is staggering…and getting worse. Gen-Xers currently make up the largest portion of owner-operator drivers, and while we’ve seen exponential growth in this area from Millennials — they overtook Boomers in 2019 to become the second largest group

6 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 2 | 2021

in this category — this group isn’t keeping pace with Boomer retirements. With good pay and incentives, what’s holding back younger drivers? In a word? Perception. The Perception Problem From the outside looking in, the perception of the transportation industry being a boys’ club isn’t far from the truth. The average age of truck drivers is 55 years, and women comprise a paltry 10-percent of the total driver workforce. Many drivers live in their trucks while they are away from home for days on

end doing work that can be physically, emotionally and mentally taxing, limiting the profession’s appeal to the tech-savvy generation. As with many large-scale problems, the solution can often be found within the problem itself. Millennials value good, solid work, just as Boomers did back in the day. Money also is important to them, although it’s less of a motivating factor than it was to past generations. While younger workers aren’t afraid of hard work, they’re significantly less tolerant of jobs that take over their lives. Jobs are important to them, but so is living a happy and fulfilling life. If there is tension between the job and joy in life, joy will win out most times. Therefore, the perception of the solitary and sedentary lifestyle of the stereotypical truck driver is the elephant in the room that’s demanding attention.

How to Reach the Next-Gen Truck Drivers While the job will always demand long hours and be physically and emotionally draining, focusing on other parts of the job such as travel and interesting experiences might just be the ticket to recruiting the next generation of drivers. One way to appeal to Millennials and Gen-Z, especially women, is to focus on creating comforts on the road and making sure drivers feel comfortable doing their job. Biases against females is still an issue in the industry and that’s not going to fly with prospective millennial employees, man or woman. While many in the industry will blame the driver shortage on pressures of government regulations, younger drivers are more concerned about the quality of their cab, the treatment they receive from fellow drivers and employers, and finding a safe place to park for the night.

When it comes to recruiting, using YouTube and other social media is pretty much a requirement if you want to reach this younger generation. A whopping 62 percent of millennials report using social media in their job searches. That’s one of the reasons the Maine Motor Transport Association is using TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram as primary vehicles in their “Go Your Way” campaign. To battle the growing driver shortage, the campaign, which launched only a month ago, aims to educate and attract workers born in 1997 and after by sharing driver stories. While they don’t sugar coat the difficulties of the job, they primarily focus on the parts of the career that appeal to a younger generation. While there’s no quick solution to filling driver seats being vacated by Boomers, these innovative approaches might just make all the difference in getting younger, qualified drivers re-engaged with life on the open road. n

Recruiting Millennials and Gen Z There are many opportunities for millennial women in all areas of transportation – whether they be as professionals in operations, HR/talent management, safety, training, sales and marketing, or as professional truck drivers. Here are five practical tips on how to effectively recruit Millennials and Gen Z: 1. Up Your Social Media Game. Coming of age during the tech explosion, it’s not surprising that more than 85 percent of millennials own smartphones and 62 percent report using social media for job searches. Aside from promotion job openings, this is a prime place to highlight your company culture and showcase women excelling in every aspect of the transportation industry. 2. Show Clear Pathways for Career Growth. With more than 60 percent of millennials seeing a concrete career progression as essential, this is a perk transportation companies can’t afford to ignore. 3. Partner with Campus Recruiting Organizations. Developing and fostering strong relationships with colleges and universities not only gets you prime real estate at job fairs, but also a direct line to recruit top talent before they even hit the job market. 4. Showcase your Company Culture. In a study entitled “Millennial Majority Workforce Study,” more than 50 percent said they were unlikely to stay with a company that didn’t value them. Showing a culture of job stability, financial security, and collaboration is a sure way to gain the attention of the younger generations. 5. Highlight Health Benefits and Work-Life Balance. A happy workforce is a productive workforce, and that counts double in the transportation industry. Offering flexible work-from-home opportunities to office professionals and providing free Wi-Fi to drivers to easily stay in touch with their families are a couple of ways to attract the younger generation.

FEATURE: Connected Culture in Remote World

Fostering a Connected Culture in a Remote World With 375 employees (including 150 drivers) working across seven separate locations around the country, ReedTMS Logistics was connecting with a remote workforce long before the coronavirus pandemic made it a necessity. Even so, when every employee started working from home due to the pandemic, the company had to take those connections to the next level. “It was a struggle in the beginning,” admits Eileen Dabrowski, Director of Learning and Development at the company. “Our closeknit culture makes Reed unique. Prior to COVID, we took our ability to come together as a team for granted. It’s entirely different now without ‘the glue of HQ.’” Communication To keep in touch, Dabrowski encourages supervisors to schedule regular, virtual meetings with each of their team members. “It is so critical to maintain a pulse on the company and on every employee. Making time to let team members know that they are valued goes a long way toward helping those who are working remotely, over-the-road or in a different location feel connected,” she explains.

She stresses the importance of giving these conversations undivided attention.

complexity to employee training, prompting the team to look for ways to adapt.

“We’re all multi-taskers by nature. People can tell, even over the phone, if you are not giving them your full attention,” she says. “It is easy to not feel valued if the person you are talking to is not actively listening and engaging.”

“When COVID started, we looked at our curriculum and tested it virtually with an external audience,” Dabrowski explains. “We’d ask, ‘Where did I lose you?’”

Like many companies, Reed has invested in technology and resources to support more virtual communication. “One of the positives of COVID is that our communication has improved significantly,” Dabrowski says. A number of platforms help to bring employees together – Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype. “The Teams group chat function has been a game changer, she says. “It allows us to engage in discussions and address issues in real time in a safe way. I suspect we will continue to rely heavily on this technology post-COVID.” Training Working remotely added a new layer of

The exercise helped to identify important opportunities for improvement. For example, the team quickly recognized that virtual training on a complex business intelligence platform or load-tracking software could not be completed in just a few days as it could be in person. They now provide the training through mini-sessions with a different cadence. In addition, they began asking subject matter experts to teach a portion of the curriculum. This helps to provide more perspectives, add variety to the presentation and allow employees to new connections within the company. Dabrowski’s team continually solicits virtual feedback on training initiatives, using Constant Contact, Microsoft Sheets, and micro surveys. To encourage authentic feedback, most feedback can be provided anonymously. The company is

also implementing a Kaizen program, and employees are encouraged to bring issues to light and suggest solutions. Employee Engagement Perhaps the most powerful strategy for forging connections in a remote environment was already widely used at Reed prior to the pandemic: focusing on employee engagement. Dabrowski has always sought out opportunities to bring employees together. Now many of those experiences take place virtually. Executives host online coffee chats to give employees a chance to connect with top leadership. Company-wide virtual happy hours are held to celebrate key milestones. Virtual walk and run events allow employees to interact and stay active. The company’s philanthropy efforts also help to build employee engagement and boost morale.

events were held virtually in 2020, including annual back-to-school shopping with at-risk children and a Christmas gift event for the Mike Alstott Foundation. In-person events have been held when conditions permitted, including a summer clothing drive, a Thanksgiving meal for area firefighters and a local road clean-up.

lifting restrictions may allow many Reed employees to head back to the office, others will continue to work remotely. Thanks to lessons learned during the pandemic and a long-standing focus on building a connected culture, the future for Reed looks promising. n

Dabrowski makes a point of involving employees in selecting the beneficiaries of the company’s philanthropic efforts. Each Reed facility has the opportunity to identify organizations in their local area for charitable giving. “People love to feel part of the process,” she says. “Employees vote on charities quarterly and we make a point of getting their feedback after each event – of asking, ‘How did that make you feel?’”

“We feel better as humans when we give back,” Dabrowski points out.

Dabrowski says the team tries to schedule activities at times that allow more employees to join. For example, the road clean-up event took place at 5 a.m., so drivers could participate.

Due to the pandemic, several long-standing

Mentor Match: Make a Difference in Your Career Starting as an administrative assistant and working her way up to branch manager for the Great Dane Tampa and Miami branches, Women In Trucking (WIT) Chairwoman Laura Roan Hays attributes her successful 30plus years transportation career to the mentorship she received. “Without the encouragement of my Laura Roan Hays mentors, there’s a chance I would have left the industry in search of a more traditional career,” she says. Now, mentoring is her way to give back. She encourages members of the association to take advantage of the Mentor Match program in WIT’s community platform, Engage. “During the late 1980s and early 1990s, I didn’t personally know any females in the trailer manufacturing industry, specifically in sales,” she says. “To be able to encourage, coach, listen, motivate, and support other women in a maledominated industry like transportation through this online mentor program is extremely valuable.” She cites three reasons mentorship will elevate your career:

1. Career Advancement & Earnings According to a Sun Microsystems study on the career progress of employees, mentors were six times more likely to be promoted than those who didn’t, and 20 percent more likely to get a raise. 2. Strengthen and Broaden Your Network Mentors share professional contacts, make introductions to the right people, and can open doors to new opportunities. 3. Rewarding Both Personally and Professionally As a mentor, you shape the next generation and be a part of their successes. As a mentee, you grow and gain confidence, see new perspectives, and become more successful. “I don’t believe we ever outgrow the need for a mentor – I still have several mentors who encourage me regularly,” says Hays. “Knowing that I may have played a small role in someone’s success brings me great joy. It’s a win-win for everyone!” To enroll as a Mentor or Mentee in WIT’s Mentor Match program, visit engage.womenintrucking.org.

FEATURE: Female-Owned Businesses

Female-Owned Businesses:

The U.S. Economy’s Quiet Success Story There are consistently three common traits found among successful women who started their own businesses: ambition, confidence, and innovation.

The rate of woman-owned businesses in the transportation sector is rapidly growing throughout the United States - and the world. Women now comprise 40 percent of new entrepreneurs in the U.S., while global female entrepreneurship rates have increased by 10 percent. While today’s women-owned businesses typically are small- or mid-sized companies, the female entrepreneurs who founded them are commonly able to overcome the many challenges facing them in order to start their own companies. There are consistently three common traits found among successful women who started their own businesses: ambition, confidence and innovation. In its third annual list of Top Woman-Owned Businesses, Women In Trucking’s Redefining the Road magazine highlights three individuals who have leveraged these traits to lead their company to success, along with an additional 14 female entrepreneurs who make up the 2021 Top Woman-Owned Businesses.

Ambition at AGT Global Logistics When she was a young girl, Angela Eliacostas was exposed to the benefits of hard work. Her father ran a trucking company and was on the road during most of the week. To spend more time with him, Angela would help her father fuel, park and wash his trucks while learning the

transportation business along the way. In 2005, Angela launched her own firm called All Girls Transportation and Logistics, which focused on the nuclear power industry. She soon expanded to other industries.

Angela Eliacostas “My father always told me that as a woman in this industry, I would face many challenges, but hard work knows no gender,” says Eliacostas. “I sometimes encounter people who assume I’m just providing a front for the company, so we can earn woman-owned status. I smile, and they throw out question after question. By the time I’m done answering, I’ve gained their respect.” Today, AGT Global Logistics is a full-service, certified woman-owned third-party logistics company. With nearly 30 years of service and a special focus on the nuclear, fossil, and power industries, AGT has made a name as being a company that provides unbeatable customer service achieving the highest level of results. Angela was named 2020 “Top Influential Women Leaders in Supply Chain” by Global Women SC Leaders. Founded in 1989 by Jim Williams, Sunset has evolved into a thirdparty logistics company specializing in supply chain management, multimodal domestic, international, and cross-border transportation, Customs clearance, and Lindsey Graves freight payment services. Today, Sunset is led by Williams’ daughter, CEO Lindsey Graves, who has kept the company charging forward in the face of an extremely volatile logistics market still being experienced in 2021. In fact, through her leadership Sunset successfully achieved 17 percent growth in revenue over 2019 despite the pandemic and added 29 employees to its nine branches in the United States and Mexico. Graves has been the driving force behind keeping teams focused on Sunset’s family-style culture, and creating a safe and flexible working environment with grace under pressure while growing the business. Sunset recently achieved Women-Owned Business National Certification and has approximately 46 percent of its workforce comprised of women. “As we continue to grow at Sunset, inclusion and diversity are at the forefront of our strategic goals,” says Graves. “Every Sunsetter has a voice.” n

FEATURE: WOMEN ON THE ROAD

Professional Drivers: Dedicated to Safety and Giving Back Many professional truck drivers go above and beyond their job descriptions, excelling at safety while also contributing to the trucking profession and their communities. A few in particular stand out. The 2021 Women In Trucking’s Driver of the Year, Nikki Weaver, along with finalists Carmen Anderson and Ingrid Brown, exemplify the best of the many drivers who keep Americans supplied with the goods and materials they need.

Carmen Anderson of America’s Service Line

Nikki Weaver of FedEx Freight Weaver has demonstrated dedication, kindness, and initiative in the dozen years in which she’s been driving for FedEx Freight, as well as 19-plus years on the road. Her record after driving more than two million miles is impressive: no accidents, no moving violations, and no citations. “I am passionate about trucking and thankful for the opportunity to continue our important work during this time of crisis,” says Weaver as she reflects on this last year’s challenges created by the COVID pandemic. Weaver’s dedication extends to others within her industry. She’s shared her knowledge of trucking with students in driver’s education classes, as well as with cadets at the Pennsylvania State Police

Academy. Weaver also has represented women in trucking at many industry events and represented the needs of her fellow drivers at the FedEx Freight specification review. Weaver worked with FedEx Freight to deliver a forklift to Bethesda Mission, a local organization that helps individuals facing hardship. “We at Bethesda Mission are thankful for both Nikki’s involvement in feeding central Pennsylvania and demonstrating kindness,” says Dave Hicks, the organization’s Director of Operations. He adds that they’ll think of Nikki every time they load a pallet of food onto the organization’s vehicles.

A driver with America’s Service Line, LLC, Carmen Anderson has driven for more than 24 years, logging 2.5 million miles with no accidents. Along the way, she has visited nearly every state in the U.S., as well as regions in Canada and Mexico. A dedicated advocate for trucking, Anderson has spoken about trucking careers to high school students and participated in a truck convoy for Special Olympics. As a road team captain with the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association’s (WMCA) Wisconsin Road Team, Anderson “volunteers her time as a safety spokesperson” and used her communication skills to discuss how long-haul truck drivers are combating human trafficking, according to WMCA president, Neal Kedzie. “Carmen’s dedication to her profession and willingness to volunteer her time for worthy causes when called upon earns my highest recommendation,” he adds.

Ingrid Brown of Rollin’ B Brown traces her start in trucking to her father, who worked in construction. Through his career, she learned to drive trucks and other heavy equipment. For three decades, Brown has been transporting a range of produce, livestock, agriculture and Christmas trees as one of the few women owner/operators with Rollin’ B. She’s also a company driver with Fleenor Bros. In nearly 42 years on the road, her record reflects zero accidents or moving violations. Allan Rutter, division head within the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, praises Brown’s “indefatigable good cheer in the midst of a rapidly changing environment” and her continued advocacy of trucking safety. Brown also has shared her challenges with cancer in an effort to encourage truckers to monitor their health and see their healthcare providers. Each year, the Women In Trucking’s Driver of the Year program, which is sponsored by Walmart, recognizes outstanding drivers who are creating positive impacts within the transportation industry. n

INCLUSION

There’s a lot of chatter in the industry about the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) Diversity & Inclusion Index. This newly created index will collect data and celebrate diversity efforts by for-hire or private fleets operating 10 trucks or more in the United States or Canada, and will be instrumental in identifying positive carrier practices and policies that help attract and retain a diverse workforce. “While many industries struggle with diversity and inclusion efforts, trucking already does well in pay equity and has a tradition of sharing ideas and learning from

Each year, participation in the program will begin with an application submitted by an employee of the company. After applying, a questionnaire will be provided to collect details of current diversity and includiosn efforts. Next, an interview with management followed by a survey of employees. The goal of the D&I Index is to create a compilation of best practiices for the industry to adopt and implement within their own organizaitons. The final results and recognitiion of outstanding achievements will be unvelied in November at the Accelerate! Conference & Expo by exectuives at CarriersEdge, the company leading the initiative. .............. Trucking Gets Boost by WIT Image Team

Within the Women In Trucking Association (WIT) community, there’s a group of professionals who know the mission of the association insideand-out, they are subject matter experts on trucking and how women can positively impact the industry, and they’re passionate about their careers. They are members of the Women In Trucking Image Team. And they have been busy. During the COVID pandemic, not only were they acting as heroes to keep goods rolling, but they made themselves available to handle the high volume of requests for interviews by media channels from all over the world. They also created two kiosk training sessions for WITney, the new Women In Trucking Ambassador Trailer which features a mobile education and recruiting unit. Myth Busters quizzes candidates to see if can differentiate facts vs fiction on trucking topics. Truck Driver DNA reveals if the candidate possesses certain habits/behaviors necessary to be a professional driver. And, they began development of an Auxiliary Image Team, which will be comprised of volunteers who will serve for a two-year term and mentor under Image Team members to learn the ropes, according to Debbie Sparks, WIT Vice President, who is leading the development of this new training program. “They will be media trained and help with media requests and ridealongs. Applications will be open during the Accelerate! Conference for female drivers who have been driving for a minimum of five years. Auxiliary Team members will be announced the first week of January 2022.” n

With conventions, conferences and trade shows opening back up and an expansion for the team happening, a first-time sponsor for the Image Team was secured to help offset costs to attend these events. Enrollment First is a national leader in voluntary insurance benefits for the independent contract driver. They offer a no-cost, turnkey approach for these drivers to gain access to guaranteed acceptance ACA compliant health plans. Enrollment First eliminates the headache of benefits administration and marry affordable benefits to a sophisticated enrollment platform.

.....WIT News Briefs..................... Eliacostas Named Distinguished Woman in Logistics Honesty, integrity and diligence are three personality characteristics that allowed Angela Eliacostas, President and founder of AGT Global Logistics, to set her company apart from others. She leveraged these traits with 30-plus years of experience, personalized small-business care, and advanced technology to elevate her company to success. This is the basis for her to receive the seventh annual Distinguished Woman in Logistics Award by Women In Trucking (WIT). “She has become a mentor, a speaker and a writer who shares her passion for our mission every chance she gets,” says Ellen Voie, WIT President and CEO. “This recognition program enables WIT to honor those who help support and encourage women in the industry.” Eliacostas developed a proprietary three-tier carrier-rating system designed to reward

drivers and companies who perform at the highest standards. She also carved out a niche for herself in the energy and utilities sector as a 3PL with 24/7/365 access and service. Her employees are not only experienced with trucking – several hold CDLs and many are HAZMAT-certified. In addition, 60 percent of her employees are women, many of whom have been with her since before she started AGT in 2005. “Winning this award is such an honor,” says Eliacostas. “I hope to represent this award by sharing encouragement and advice. To all of the women steering their ways in the world of transportation and logistics, remember this: Achievement isn’t reaching a final destination. Achievement doesn’t stop, it means realizing your dreams and then striving to do more. There will be frustrating times. Always keep pushing. Have faith in yourself and your abilities. Be confident. Then you will succeed.”

Angela Eliacostas Eliacostas was one of three notable finalists for the award, including Nicole Glenn, President and CEO of Candor Expedite, and Jeana Hysell, Senior Safety Consultant for J. J. Keller & Associates. n

MID-ATLANTIC REGION

The Women In Trucking Association (WIT) announces it will be launching a new initiative that brings together members through a network of local chapters. With a membership of 6,000 members predominantly throughout the United States and Canada, creating local chapters will enable these members to meet more frequently and within their regional markets. “Having the infrastructure of local chapters brings together individuals who are interested in creating opportunities and addressing challenges when it comes to gender diversity in the male-dominant industry of transportation,” says Ellen Voie, WIT President and CEO. “It also provides the ability for us to advance our overall mission, which is to encourage the employment of

WIT intends to launch many local chapters within the next several years, according to Debbie Sparks, WIT Vice President who is leading a task force to develop the strategy of the chapter program. “The task force is envisioning each chapter to have its own individual personality,” says Sparks. “We are not defining what or how each chapter should operate. The only common, predominant focus for all chapters will be on advancing the mission of WIT.” The WIT Mid-Atlantic Chapter will be the first chapter to launch, according to Sparks. “One of our task force members, Alyssa Kerin with USI Insurance, has been named President of the WIT Mid-Atlantic Chapter and has volunteered to host this chapter’s first event Sept. 30 at D.M. Bowman’s offices in Williamsport, Md. The chapter will host

Alyssa Kerin an afternoon Girl Scout program. This will be followed later by an evening cocktail reception open to current and prospective members.” Visit WomenInTrucking.org/chapters for more details. n
