GREETINGS FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO
Connect with Women In Trucking If the past year has taught us anything, it is the importance of making connections. When we take time to understand and relate to one another, we can build deeper, more meaningful relationships, overcome obstacles and make faster progress toward our goals. At Women In Trucking (WIT), we’ve always worked hard to create connections with our members – to unite in the pursuit of our common goal. We do this through member engagement such as conferences, webinars and consistent communication. Ellen Voie, CAE, President & CEO Women In Trucking Association, Inc.

Shining a Light on Successful Women
Celebrating the successes of women in the industry is a core tenet of the Women In Trucking Association (WIT). The 2021 list of Top Women to Watch in Transportation proves that there is much to celebrate. Whether the coronavirus pandemic gave women greater opportunities to distinguish themselves or the challenging situation simply spurred those in the industry to recognize their colleagues, Redefining the Road magazine received a record number of quality nominations for the list this year.
6 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 1 | 2021
The following 73 individuals were selected on the basis of their career accomplishments in the past 18 months and ways in which they exemplify WIT’s mission. As the following profiles show, these remarkable women are making great strides in their careers while promoting the employment of women in the trucking industry, eliminating obstacles, and supporting one another. LINDSEY GRAMMEL, TruNorth Global “Lindsey embodies the spirit of diversity,” a colleague says. “Since Day 1, she’s led the charge on inclusivity here at TruNorth.” TruNorth Global was just getting off the ground when Lindsey Grammel joined the company as Executive Director of Customer & Retailer Services in 2015. Her role has grown and evolved along with the company which now boasts nearly 100 employees in North America and is expanding to the United Kingdom. In late 2019, Grammel was promoted to Vice President, Global Brand Development. Today, she leads the charge on brand development and creating new programs designed to help customers get the best warranty coverage and ensure they have a good experience. “Our customers think it’s refreshing to see a confident woman in this male-dominated industry,” she says. “They tell me, ‘You’re the bright pinkie, not the sore thumb.’”
Grammel champions diversity and proudly reports that the company’s leadership team is 80 percent female. She is eager to instill a sense of confidence in other women who have joined the company. “I encourage them to have a voice, think critically,” Grammel says. “I tell them, ‘This might be new territory for you, but know that you have a place here. You can make an impact.’” The new mother of a baby girl, she has proved adept at balancing personal and professional life and serves as a strong female role model and advocate for women in the world of transportation.
CARMEN ANDERSON, America’s Service Line Carmen Anderson has logged 2.5 million accident-free miles since she began driving 23 years ago. Today, the Company Driver for America’s Service Line continues to set a high standard of professional excellence. Anderson has placed in state truck-driving championships for the past seven years. In 2019, she was named Driver of the Month for August by the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association (WMCA) and was the first woman to be recognized as the organization’s Driver of the Year. In 2020, she was one of three finalists for Women In Trucking’s first-annual Female Driver of the Year Award. Anderson makes it a priority to give back to the industry. For the past 10 years, she has served on the organizing committee for the South Dakota Truck Convoy for Special Olympics, helping to support
local athletes. She also is involved with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) and has appeared in news interviews to help educate the public about how to recognize and prevent human trafficking. A lifetime member of Women In Trucking, Anderson was appointed to the WIT Image Team in 2019 and serves as a subject-matter expert for media interviews and industry events. She strongly supports WIT’s mission to encourage more women in the industry.
MELISSA JASS, Yellow “She believes in me so much, I’m starting to believe in myself,” a colleague says of Melissa Jass, Senior Organizational Development Business Partner at Yellow. Jass is clearly dedicated to promoting and developing women at all levels of the Yellow organization, and she has been recognized as the architect and leader of the company’s strategy in this regard. She developed and launched the women’s resource group and coaches and mentors many women within the organization to help them develop the skills needed to achieve their career goals. It is worth noting that, in addition to receiving multiple nominations herself, Jass nominated a number of her colleagues for this year’s Top Women to Watch list. Jass also leads the Women in Action leadership development program. In the past year, the program has expanded to include
women from all of Yellow’s operating companies, with tracks geared toward women at every level within the organization, from senior leadership to frontline individual contributors. Jass also participates in industry groups outside of Yellow and shares her expertise and insights to help other organizations develop sustainable programs that support women’s career goals. She was instrumental in building Yellow’s relationship with Women In Trucking. As a result of her efforts, more than 250 of the company’s leaders are involved with WIT today. continued on page 8 www.WomenInTrucking.org 7

FEATURE: Recruiting Strategies
Recruiting Strategies for the Road Ahead If it seems like it is getting more challenging to find drivers, it is probably not your imagination. “Recruiting drivers today is really hard,” says Wendy Bartz, Director of Recruiting Services at DriverReach, a recruiting and compliance management system provider. With a serious driver shortage, heightened requirements for drug and alcohol testing, a backlog in CDL testing and safety concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic, there simply are fewer drivers available. The industry also is facing an imbalance of supply and demand as a result of the pandemic, says Kimberly Castagnetta, Chief Marketing Officer at TransForce Group, a workforce solutions provider. “We’ve seen the need for drivers explode in essential industries and lay-offs in others. We need to get drivers in the right jobs,” she says. However, those who are working are less likely to make a change in the current environment. “In a strong freight market like we’re seeing today, good drivers tend to stay where they’re at because they would take a financial loss if they leave,” Bartz says. Despite these challenges, there is progress. “Activity is up – on job boards and with our branches. The application flow is pretty strong,” Castagnetta says. The caveat? “There is a lot of activity, but drivers are looking for the right opportunity.”
Focus on Lifestyle How drivers define the “right opportunity” is changing. In lieu of signing bonuses, Castagnetta says, drivers are looking for incentives like shorter payouts, more days off, greater stability, or a better lifestyle. “Compensation used to be Number One for drivers. Now, the top factor is ‘type of route’ or ‘assignment type,’” she explains. “We’re spending a lot of time identifying routes 20 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 1 | 2021
that give drivers more home time. If you can take one or two nights off, that’s where we’re seeing a ‘win.’”
shift to connect with drivers. Reymer recommends considering the driver’s perspective.
“More drivers are looking for local, homedaily opportunities,” agrees Jeremy Reymer, DriverReach Founder and CEO. “That was a trend before the pandemic, but it has been exacerbated by COVID.”
“Ultimately, you’re trying to identify and solve the driver’s problem – more home time, better pay, improved benefits… If you can solve their problem, it’s a win-win,” he explains, adding, “To do that, you need to have conversations – build relationships and build trust.”
The trend could have long-term ramifications that extend beyond the recruiting department, as the need for drivers pushes companies to shorten the average length of haul. “Going forward, I think we’ll see companies looking hard at distribution models,” Castagnetta predicts. “How do they get closer to where products are being consumed?” When choosing geographic locations, it is also important to consider driver availability. “If you’re 150 miles from a major city, you’re likely to be more challenged in finding drivers,” she says.
Another approach that resonates with drivers, Castagnetta has found, is to educate them about the variety of careers available in the transportation industry. “We point out that driving can lead to other jobs. In fact, several of our drivers have gone on to other opportunities within the company,” she explains. “There is so much opportunity in the transportation industry.”
Know Your Audience
Adjust Your Approach
When promoting driving opportunities, keep your target audience in mind, advises Bartz. If you want to attract female drivers, your marketing materials should reflect that.
In the current competitive environment, recruiters may need to make a paradigm
“Women like to follow other women. To appeal to female drivers, use pictures of
women in job posts, videos and other recruiting materials,” she recommends. Highlighting your company’s efforts to ensure personal safety can also appeal to women – especially for over-the-road drivers, Bartz says.
Seek Out Referrals Your current drivers can be your best ambassadors when it comes to recruiting, so never underestimate the importance of your referral program.
61%
of drivers are confused and overwhelmed by the online application process. 2020 TransForce Group study
“The drivers you get from referrals are likely to be your best candidates, with a good rate of retention. Why not do a better job of building a referral engine?” Bartz asks. Many referral programs lack structure and sustained attention, she cautions. “You can’t just roll out a referral program and forget it until next year. Your drivers should be thinking about it all the time.”
Streamline the Application Process When your recruiting efforts start to gain traction, make sure your hiring process doesn’t get in the way, Castagnetta says. A 2020 TransForce Group study shows that 61 percent of drivers are confused and overwhelmed by the online application process. Bartz agrees, “Look at it from the driver’s perspective. This is a highly regulated industry with a complicated application process. You need to offer a mobile-friendly, easy-to-complete application.”
The Only One Stop Solution Your Fleet Needs
Educating the Drivers of Today and Tomorrow.
Specialized Marketing and Recruitment Services for Carriers.
Placing Qualified Drivers and Mechanics in the Right Positions.
Keeping Drivers and Carriers Safe and Compliant.
In fact, Bartz recommends leveraging technology throughout the recruiting process. Email, text capabilities, CRM functionality, electronic background verification and more. “In today’s environment, you need to be proactive and follow up more,” she explains. “Technology makes you more efficient and provides a level of automation. It can help to take some of the weight off recruiters.” With the American Trucking Associations forecasting a shortage of 160,000 drivers by 2028, recruiting will continue to be a challenge for the foreseeable future. Adopting strategies like these may help to give your company a competitive advantage. n

FEATURE: Staying Safe on the Road
Staying Safe on the Road After more than 30 years on the road, Barb Duncan knows a thing or two about safety. Today, she is a professional Driver and Trainer for Warren Gibson Transport and a member of the Women In Trucking (WIT) Canadian Image Team. When Redefining the Road caught up with her recently, she shared a host of safety tips to help other female professional drivers.
Do your homework
Be prepared
Start by seeking out a safety-minded workplace. Duncan stresses the importance of due diligence before taking a position with a new company.
Good safety habits begin before a driver even gets into her truck. Duncan advises doing a thorough pre-trip inspection daily to reduce the chance of a breakdown. Check tires, headlights, oil, washer fluids, air lines, clean mirrors, etc.
“Really research the company you want to drive for,” she says. “What is their track record for safety? How old are their trucks? Do they have a lot of maintenance issues?” Proper training is also important. Duncan recommends asking about a prospective employer’s training practices. “Lack of training is a huge issue today, and it can result in serious safety issues,” she says. “Make sure they offer on-going training – with female trainers.”
22 REDEFINING THE ROAD Edition 1 | 2021
“A lot of drivers complain about doing inspections, but they’re really for your safety,” she explains. “If you need to make repairs, it’s much better to make them in a controlled area, on your terms, rather than out on the road.” Planning your route in advance is also important. “Don’t rely 100 percent on your GPS,” she says. “Compare routes with the map app on your phone or a paper map.”
To minimize the need to stop for food, Duncan pre-packages meals and snacks in advance of each trip.
Stay alert Once on the road, personal safety should be top of mind. “Always be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Carry a phone with you at all times,” Duncan says. “Personally, I don’t leave my truck at night. I make sure to get fuel and shower mid-day.” When possible, she opts to spend the night at customer sites or rest areas. While she has not been formally trained in self-defense, Duncan has learned a few simple defensive techniques, and she
always carries a heavy metal travel mug that could be used to help ward off wouldbe attackers. (In Canada, truck drivers are restricted from carrying firearms or defense weapons.) The right attitude is also essential. “You need to give off an aura – have fire in your eyes,” Duncan says.
Stay informed A variety of technology tools are available to help ensure safety on the road. Duncan keeps her CB radio on at all times and downloads 511 apps for states that she travels in regularly for real-time traffic information. The Trucker Path app helps with finding truck stops and checking parking availability. She also monitors the Weather Network and Google Maps regularly. “It’s good to stop and stretch every two to three hours and check roads and traffic. That way you can adjust your route if you need to,” she explains. “Just going 20 miles out of your way might help you avoid a storm, road construction or traffic delay.” Duncan also relies on the powers of observation. “In the winter, for example, pay attention to on-coming truck traffic. If you see snow spray on most of the vehicles coming your way, you will know there’s snow up ahead,” she says. “Talking to other drivers can also be helpful.”
Be courteous Duncan encourages all drivers to be courteous on the road and tries to be a good role model. For example, when another truck wants to pass her, she slows down and lets them do so safely. “A lot of companies have now capped truck speed at 60 to 65 miles an hour,” she explains. “It only takes a couple of seconds to slow down and allow another truck to pass safely. It’s a good defensive driving habit to get into.” With thorough training, careful planning, the right tools and a healthy dose of caution and courtesy, Duncan has safely enjoyed a driving career for more than three decades. Follow her lead to be better prepared for the road ahead. n

...WIT News Briefs..................... WIT Helps to Honor Fallen Soldiers Every December, Wreaths Across America (WAA) coordinates wreath-laying ceremonies at thousands of cemeteries across the United States in remembrance of fallen veterans. Women In Trucking (WIT) was honored to help deliver wreaths for this year’s events in Houston, Texas.
The trio began their journey in early December, stopping in Columbia Falls, Maine, to tour WAA’s facility and pick up 3,897 wreaths before making their way to Texas. Garcia documented the journey on social media using the hashtag #WITWreathRun.
To assist WIT Driver Ambassador Kellylynn McLaughlin in transporting wreaths across the country, the association selected two members who are veterans. Nichole Garcia served as an Army medic for seven years before joining Schneider as a Digital Media Representative. Janice Neitz drove trucks and operated heavy equipment in the Army for eight years. She now works for the police department in Ashland, Mass., and drives a snow plow part-time.
“Being able to take part in the event was a dream come true,” she says.
“I feel extremely honored to play a role in delivering the wreaths to the graves of our fallen soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice,” Neitz says.
The trip was personally meaningful for McLaughlin as well. She had the opportunity to pay tribute to her father by placing his dog tag and a red ribbon on a tree at the WAA tipping grounds in Columbia Falls. “Making this trip to remember our nation’s fallen heroes with two incredibly strong female veterans has been such a moving experience,” McLaughlin says. “I’m very grateful for the chance to contribute to such an inspirational event.”
