From the Driver Seat to the C-Suite

Championing Women Through a New Mission and Vision

As a kid growing up in Maryland, I was fortunate to have a range of mentors throughout my local community in school, church and sports activities. One such mentor was a teacher in my high school who advised several of my classmates and me on having a mission and vision for ourselves and the importance of being purposeful in our high school journey and as we prepared for the future.

It was advice I have never forgotten, particularly the concept of being mission-focused and letting that drive your goals.

At Women In Trucking we are always thinking about our mission. It is the north star that guides what we do as an organization–from the people who we serve, to what we offer as an

organization to our members and beyond.

Each year, the WIT leadership, including Board, Partners, and staff, participate in strategic planning. Throughout the past year we have been considering the questions of who we are as an organization, who we want to be, and who we serve.

These questions were crucial in planning the short and long-term strategic goals for the organization and allowed us to focus very closely on the mission of Women In Trucking.

We determined that we could hone our mission to better reflect what we do as an organization, including the immediate impact we continue to seek for our members and the trucking profession at large.

The updated mission is:

Mission: Champion the employment and advancement of women in trucking, foster connections, and recognize achievements.

Additionally, we developed a vision statement, which reflects the longerterm goals of the organization.

Vision: To build a future in trucking where women are represented and empowered—driving lasting impact across the industry.

I’m grateful for the leadership of the WIT Board and their initiative for the organization. The clarity in mission and vision will allow WIT to continue to grow into the future, and maintain our long-term purpose of championing women, developing connections, and celebrating successes both now and in the years to come.

From the Driver Seat to the C-Suite

In today’s workforce, women continue to drive innovation, leadership, and long-term business growth across industries. Yet, the ability of organizations to attract and retain female talent depends heavily on the environment they create and the policies they uphold.

For women, the workplace is not just about a paycheck—it’s about opportunity, balance, and belonging. In the trucking industry, here are six features women consistently prioritize in their employers, and why they matter.

1. Career Advancement Opportunities

Women are looking for a a clear path for growth. Female employees often encounter glass ceilings that limit their access to leadership roles. When companies actively promote women into decision-making positions and provide visibility to advancement opportunities, it empowers female talent and provides diverse perspectives at every level of the organization. A culture of advancement can help women feel valued for their contributions and inspire them to envision a long-term future with their employer.

2. Training, Continued Education, and Development Support

Professional development is critical to career progression. Women increasingly seek employers that invest in mentorship programs, leadership development tracks, tuition reimbursement, and skills training. This support allows women to compete in ever evolving industries, builds confidence in their abilities, and prepares them for greater responsibility. It also demonstrates an employer’s belief in their long-term potential, which can reduce turnover and strengthen loyalty. COVER: Where Women Thrive

Features That

Make Your Organization a

Good Place for Women to Work

There are 114 companies named as 2025 “Top Companies for Women to Work in Transportation,” named by Redefining the Road, the official magazine of the Women In Trucking Association (page 9). Most companies named to the list excel in these areas to make them “employers of choice.”

continued from page 7

3. Corporate Culture Supportive of Gender Diversity

An inclusive culture is more than a slogan— it’s lived in everyday practices. Women value organizations that foster equity, promote diverse opinions, and create safe, respectful environments where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. A supportive culture makes women feel like they belong, ensures their voices are heard, and provides additional opportunities, including new assignments and advancement. Most importantly, it allows women to be authentic while they advance their careers.

An inclusive culture is more than a slogan— it’s lived in everyday practices.

4. Competitive Compensation

Women seek competitive compensation from their employers for the same fundamental reasons as anyone else — to feel valued, achieve financial security, and advance in their careers. Competitive compensation also reflects a company’s commitment to merit-based advancement, which helps attract and retain talented, qualified women who want to build longterm, fulfilling careers in environments that fairly reward performance.

5. Flexibility in Hours and Work Requirements

Work-life balance is essential, especially as women often shoulder disproportionate caregiving responsibilities. Flexible schedules, remote work options, and adaptable workload policies allow women to better manage professional and personal responsibilities without sacrificing career progress. Flexibility fosters loyalty and productivity—when companies trust women to manage their time, they are more likely to deliver results and stay engaged.

CPC LOGISTICS

6. Quality Benefits Package

A strong benefits package signals that a company cares about the well-being of its employees. This often includes paid maternity leave, parental leave, comprehensive healthcare, childcare support, sick and vacation time, and wellness programs. These benefits provide peace of mind and reduce the stress of balancing life and work. Employers who prioritize these benefits demonstrate their commitment to supporting employees at all stages of life and career.

Building Workplaces Where Women Flourish

Organizations that prioritize advancement, development, inclusive culture, fair pay, flexibility, and strong benefits create environments where all employees can thrive, lead, and contribute. Ultimately, these practices represent modern workplace values that elevate everyone, driving stronger performance, greater innovation, and long-term organizational success.

CELEBRATES OUR WOMEN

TOP COMPANIES

Recognizing Excellence Congratulations to the 2025 “Top Companies for Women to Work” in Transportation

This recognition program, first launched in 2018, was created to advance one of WIT’s core objectives: promoting organizations that make significant strides in employing and empowering women across the industry. Over the years, the program has grown into a highly respected benchmark for workplace excellence, highlighting employers that are building environments where women can not only succeed, but lead.

What sets these companies apart? Group Publisher and Editorial Director Brian Everett explains the honorees shared common charactieristics: Inclusive corporate cultures that see value in qualified, skilled women in trucking, competitive compensation and benefits, flexibility in scheduling and work requirements, and robust opportunities for professional development and career growth.

“Companies named to this prestigious list must demonstrate corporate attributes that are essential to any successful enterprise committed to qualified women in trucking as part of their corporate strategy,” Everett says.

C.H. ROBINSON

www.chrobinson.com

The selection process is both comprehensive and collaborative. Company nominations are first evaluated to ensure a strong baseline of qualifications. From there, individuals across the industry cast their votes to determine which companies truly stand out. This year, the response was extraordinary with more than 21,000 votes cast.

The “Elite 30,” the companies earning the highest number of votes, represent the very best of the best. All organizations will receive special recognition on stage during the 2025 Accelerate! Conference & Expo in Dallas on Sunday, November 9.

By shining a spotlight on these leading companies, Redefining the Road not only honors their accomplishments, but also sets a standard for the industry as a whole. Together, these organizations are shaping a more inclusive future for transportation—one where women’s contributions are recognized, supported, and celebrated.

Cargo theft has long been a concern for supply chains of high-value products such as electronics, food and beverage, other consumer goods, according to Thom Albrecht, Chief Revenue Officer for Reliance Partners, a fast-growing commercial insurance agency in trucking and logistics.

In fact, in the United States millions of dollars’ worth of consumables are lost each year to theft during transport, at distribution centers, or from unsecured warehouses.

Cargo theft doesn’t just hit the bottom line, Albrecht points out. It undermines supply chain trust and reputation, impacts insurance rates, and can even lead to shortages of products. There are unique ways this growing issue can negatively impact women in the trucking workforce.

Quantifying the Problem

Record-breaking cargo theft activity across the U.S. and Canada reached unprecedented levels in 2024, with 3,625 reported incidents representing a stark 27% increase from 2023, according to an annual analysis by Verisk CargoNet, a business unit of Verisk which is a leading global data analytics provider. The estimated average value per theft rose to $202,364, up from $187,895 in 2023.

Geographic trends show California and Texas experiencing the most significant increases in theft activity, according to Keith Lewis, Vice President of Operations with CargoNet. California reported a 33% rise in incidents, while Texas saw a 39% surge. Other states with high rates include Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and Arizona.

While 2023 saw frequent theft of highvalue or high-volume food products such as energy drinks, 2024 marked a strategic pivot by organized criminals to specific consumable goods.

Organized Criminals Dominate Cargo Theft

Cargo theft is a multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise worldwide, and while both straight theft (otherwise known as “tactical”) and organized criminals engage

in it, organized crime rings are proving to be far more effective, efficient, and damaging, according to Albrecht. What makes organized crime more successful and dangerous in cargo theft than their tactical counterparts?

Straight theft is committed by tactical criminals who oftentimes are opportunists, according to Scott Cornell, National Practice Leader with Travelers Inland Marine, a major insurance provider that

serves companies that haul cargo. “These are typically small crews, usually people who are related to or have known each other since childhood, and they are relatively unsophisticated.”

“They are physically on location and go straight out to the cargo and steal it where it sits,” Cornell explains. “They rely on short-term planning, limited resources,

and impulsive decisions.” A classic example might be a thief or small crew who targets an unattended truck at a truck stop or an under-secured facility.

On the other hand, organized criminals operate like a business, says Cornell. They have structures, hierarchies, logistics networks, or connections within shipping companies, for-hire trucking companies, private fleets, or logistics providers. They often work across multiple states

or even countries, so if one operation is compromised, they shift to another. They diversify the types of goods they steal and can carry out multiple thefts at once. This level of redundancy makes them more resilient and profitable and less likely to get caught.

Organized crews conduct planning and surveillance on potential targets, studying patterns, tracking routes, and analyzing vulnerabilities in the supply chain. Tactical criminals may strike when the opportunity arises, but organized groups create their opportunities.

Organized criminals can gain access to insider knowledge such as real-time data on shipments, routes and security protocols by bribing employees. They also can use advanced tools to intercept communications, clone GPS signals, and hack into TMS or WMS systems to reroute shipments or impersonate legitimate carriers —techniques that are far beyond the reach of a tactical criminal. Stealing a truckload of goods is only half the battle. Cargo thieves oftentimes have pre-arranged channels to offload and resell stolen cargo—whether through gray markets, online platforms, or distribution networks. Tactical criminals, in contrast, often lack the means to convert goods into cash quickly or safely.

Theft’s Impact on Women in the Workforce

Cargo theft doesn’t just cause financial losses, but for women it can heighten safety risks, career pressures, and retention challenges – while also opening the door for leadership in shaping safer, more secure and inclusive practices. Here are other ways it can uniquely impact women in the workforce:

Heightened Personal Safety Concerns. Cargo theft incidents often involve intimidation, hijacking, or violence. For women truck drivers, who already can face more significant safety challenges on the road, the added risk of being targeted in theft situations can amplifies personal security concerns.

This can discourage women from taking certain routes, working night shifts, or

parking in less secure areas — potentially limiting their job options.

Increased Stress and Job Pressure.

Women in the trucking industry often can feel added pressure to “prove themselves” in a male-populated industry. Experiencing or even fearing cargo theft can increase stress and concerns about being judged. The psychological toll can lead to burnout or end their career prematurely.

Impact on Recruiting and Retention.

Safety is one of the biggest barriers to women entering trucking. If cargo theft is perceived as common and dangerous, it may further discourage women from joining or staying in the industry. Companies that don’t have strong theftprevention and safety support can lose female talent to other industries.

Additional Training and Responsibility.

Women in operational or logistics roles (dispatchers, fleet managers, supply chain coordinators) are often responsible for theft prevention protocols. These roles face more pressure when thefts rise, adding to workloads and increasing stress that can affect women disproportionately if they’re underrepresented on teams.

Ways to Combat Organized Cargo Theft

There are four main ways to minimize the risk of cargo theft in the trucking industry.

1. Ensure that facilities and equipment are secure and proper security protocols are in place. Incorporate tamper-evident seals and packaging to deter or reveal theft attempts. Whether cargo theft activities involve hijackings or break-ins, physical attacks on trucks in transit or parked remain common.

2. Thoroughly vet all carrier or thirdparty logistics providers. This includes asking questions such as: What are your onboarding and monitoring processes? Do you post to public or private load boards? What are your verification and compliance policies? What software do you use?

3. Invest in technology, including cybersecurity, GPS tracking, and geofencing for real-time location monitoring and alerts. Some industry experts recommend using at least two tracking devices per trailer.

4. Thoroughly train employees to recognize signs of fraud or infiltration.

They should be trained to recognize any fake bills of lading or other suspicious documents. Train them to recognize a fictitious pick-up with a nervous posing as a legitimate truck driver and to ensure they verify drivers they don’t know.

Moving Forward with a Secure Supply Chain

While tactical criminals may pose a nuisance, organized criminal groups represent the real, sustained threat to global cargo security. As global supply chains become more interconnected, protecting cargo from theft must be a top priority. The stakes are high in both dollars lost and in consumer safety and supply chain resilience.

In a world where supply chain efficiency is more critical than ever, companies must shift their focus from protecting assets to fully understanding and disrupting the organized networks that threaten them. Those that invest in smarter logistics, stronger partnerships, and a culture of security awareness can effectively defend against the evolving threat of cargo theft.

KEEPING TRUCKS ROAD-READY

Keeping commercial trucks well-maintained is no small task. For fleet managers and owner-operators, it’s a balancing act of safety, compliance, cost, and uptime. While routine maintenance is critical, several ongoing challenges make it harder to keep trucks road-ready.

One of the biggest hurdles is wear and tear from heavy use. Large commercial vehicles log hundreds of miles daily, and constant strain on brakes, tires, engines, and suspensions means parts wear out quickly. Staying ahead of those breakdowns requires both proactive inspections and predictive maintenance strategies, says Lynn Murphy, CEO with TruckSuite, which offers commercial vehicle aftermarket warranties, preventative maintenance, and tire and wheel protection programs to fleets, Owner-Operators, truck dealerships and repair shops.

Priorities To Healthy Truck Maintenance

Keeping trucks road-ready involves a mix of proactive planning, skilled labor, real-time data, and responsive logistics, according to Alan McDonald, Chief Operating Officer at TruckSuite, who has 25-plus years of claims repairs. Key areas to focus on include:

Preventative Maintenance

Scheduling

Driver

Parts

But while you can take proactive steps to avoid breakdowns or mechanical problems, they still happen. When a rig breaks down, women professional truck drivers—like all drivers—can protect themselves from being taken advantage of by taking a few smart steps. First, whenever possible get a clear estimate before any work is performed, rather than agreeing to repairs after they’ve already been completed, which can lead to inflated charges.

Drivers also can benefit from using direct-sale marketplaces partnered with insurance agencies, where vetted service providers gives more transparency and confidence in who’s doing the maintenance and repair. And when it comes to filing insurance claims, keeping thorough documentation such as photos, receipts, and notes on conversations helps to ensure fair reimbursement and prevents disputes down the road. By staying proactive and informed, drivers can keep more control in stressful breakdown situations.

Bringing the Story of Female Truckers to Kids

For Wanda Brooks, trucking is more than a profession—it’s a calling and a legacy. As Compliance Manager at RE Garrison Trucking in Cullman, AL, she already wears many hats: wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, ordained minister, and published author. Now, she’s taken on a new mission—to inspire young girls to see trucking as a career filled with purpose and possibility.

Her latest book, I Want To Be A Trucker, is a 43-page children’s story designed to spark curiosity and pride in the life of a professional driver. Filled with colorful illustrations, real-life photos of children exploring trucking environments, and Bible verses that connect faith with everyday experiences, the book paints an honest yet uplifting picture of the road.

“I’ve been writing books for more than 20 years, something the Lord placed on my heart,” Brooks explains. “But after attending the Women In Trucking Association’s

Accelerate! Conference last year, I felt inspired to create something for children—especially little girls—that shows trucking through the eyes of faith and family.”

Her passion for the industry runs deep. Brooks grew up around trucks, admiring her stepfather and uncle who both made their living behind the wheel.

“My uncle was an Army veteran, and he gave his life driving out on the road to save someone else, all while supporting his family and delivering food and supplies to America,” she recalls. “He was my hero.”

With I Want To Be A Trucker, Brooks hopes to pass that sense of pride, service, and opportunity on to the next generation. “I want children to see that trucking is not only about moving freight—it’s about faith, courage, and making a difference,” she says.

Copies of I Want To Be A Trucker are available now on Amazon.

Careers For Women

From the Driver Seat to the C-Suite

For decades, society’s image of trucking has often centered around one role: the long-haul driver behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler. While this role remains vital to keeping America’s economy moving, today’s trucking industry offers women more diverse, rewarding career paths than ever. From corporate boardrooms to maintenance bays, warehouses to dispatch offices, women are driving innovation, safety, and leadership in the industry.

“Trucking is a dynamic industry powered by innovation, teamwork, resourcefulness, and productivity – with the professional driver at its core,” says Jennifer Hedrick, CAE, President and CEO of the Women In

Trucking Association (WIT). “However, it’s so much more than driving the freight to its final destination and it requires talents and expertise in many roles. It’s about leadership, safety, technology, and problem-solving. Women bring incredible strengths and skill sets to roles in all these areas.”

Leadership and Management: Shaping the Future of Freight

Women are increasingly rising into leadership roles in companies within the trucking industry—serving as CEOs, fleet managers, division heads, and team leaders. In fact, approximately 34.5% of company leaders (defined as professionals who supervise others) are women, according to the 2024-25 WIT Index, which many consider to be the industry barometer benchmarking and measuring the percentage of women in key roles in North American trucking.

Whether overseeing multi-state operations or managing a team of dispatchers, women in management positions bring essential skills in collaboration, communication, and

organizational strategy. As more companies prioritize diversity at the executive level, opportunities for advancement are only expanding.

Operations, Dispatch, Safety and Compliance: Keeping Freight Moving Smoothly

In the heart of every trucking operation are the professionals managing routes, scheduling shipments, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Operations and dispatch roles require quick thinking, strong coordination skills, and a deep understanding of drivers’ needs and challenges on the road. Many women in these positions excel at problem-solving and multitasking—two key strengths that keep freight flowing efficiently every day.

Of course, in most companies safety is a top priority, and women are playing a growing role in keeping fleets safe, secure and compliant. Safety directors, risk managers, and compliance specialists develop and implement policies that protect drivers, equipment, and the public. These roles often appeal to women with analytical skills and an eye

for detail, offering both stability and purpose in helping ensure everyone gets home safely.

Today, according to the WIT Index, approximately 38.5% of dispatchers are women and another 38.5% are in safety roles.

In addition, as e-commerce reshapes how goods move warehousing and logistics have become essential parts of the trucking ecosystem. Women are stepping into roles as warehouse supervisors, logistics coordinators, and inventory managers—positions that blend operational efficiency with people leadership. These roles often serve as stepping stones into broader supply chain management careers.

Maintenance and Mechanics: Breaking Stereotypes

More women are also entering the technical side of trucking—as diesel mechanics, technicians, and maintenance managers. These positions are increasingly in demand, as fleets adopt advanced equipment and technology. Training programs and trade schools nationwide are actively encouraging women to enter these high-skill,

high-paying roles that offer hands-on satisfaction and strong job security.

Professional Truck Drivers: At the Heart of It All

Of course, professional drivers remain the lifeblood of the industry—and more women than ever are taking the wheel. In fact, women now represent 9.5% of all professional drivers, a figure that continues to grow. Women drivers are often recognized for their strong safety records, reliability, and professionalism, setting new standards for excellence on the road.

An Industry with Room to Grow

As automation, sustainability, and technology reshape transportation, the trucking industry is evolving rapidly— and women are essential to its future success. Whether through data analytics, AI-powered logistics, or advanced vehicle maintenance, opportunities are multiplying for those ready to learn and lead.

“Trucking offers something for everyone,” concludes Hedrick. “No matter your background, education, or skill set, there’s a place for you in this industry.”

Big Rigs, Tight Turns, Safe Driving: Training Day in WITney ® Simulator

Climb into a truck driving simulator and suddenly you’re not just an observer— you’re in control of a big rig. The mirrors stretch wide, the engine rumbles beneath you, and every move feels real. As you steer through tight loading yards or merge onto crowded highways, the simulator replicates the exact challenges professional drivers face daily: blind spots that can hide a compact car, trailers that swing with each turn, and the precision required to back into a dock with only inches to spare. With authentic wheel resistance and lifelike road feedback, the experience makes one thing clear: piloting a semi-truck isn’t just driving—it’s problem-solving in motion.

This type of simulator is part of the WITney® Educational Trailer, which has been offering a hands-on glimpse of careers in trucking since 2020. Traveling to locations across the country and to industry events each year, the WITney® simulator builds respect for the skill and focus required to drive and helps potential drivers practice safe maneuvers in a risk-free environment, turning complex scenarios into teachable moments.

Enhancing the Simulator Experience

The WITney® Trailer transforms curiosity into confidence by giving participants a glimpse of real truck driving—complete with diverse scenarios, regional landscapes, varying weather conditions, and more.

The trailer’s custom-made simulator was significantly upgraded to provide several training modules, including driving on the highway, tight turns, parking in a dock and driving in rainy and snowy weather. The user experience isn’t drastically different, but the upgrade has provided a faster experience and is much easier to use, notes Jenny Fall, Director of Driver Engagement for the Women In Trucking Association (WIT).

This high-tech upgrade was courtesy of Advanced Training Systems (ATS), a diversified design, manufacturing and virtual simulation group of companies based in St. Petersburg, FL.

“Our partnership with ATS has been essential to the WITney trailer program,” says Fall. “The simulator continues to be the star of any event - and gives WIT the opportunity to engage with members, young people and others curious about trucking. With stateof-the-art equipment and the continued support of companies like ATS, we are able to make an impact and share our mission further each and every year.”

“ATS is proud of the partnership we have shared with WIT for several years,” says Rebecca Hudson, President of ATS. “Our missions align in wanting to create opportunities to engage the best CDL drivers for the industry. The simulator in WITney® is our way of showing our commitment to that mission.”

Other Features of the WITney® Educational Trailer

The WITney® Trailer also features interactive kiosks with Trucking 101 information, common myths, general Q&As, and a quiz on whether trucking would be the right career fit for visitors.

In addition, headsets allow visitors to experience inspirational stories of female drivers and how truck driving careers can balance with family, career, and overall lifestyle. There’s also a female uniform display featuring workwear, steel-toed boots, safety vest and gloves, safety glasses, and a trucker bag. A timeline showcases WIT’s accomplishments since the association’s inception in 2007.

In 2024, nearly 7,400 visitors experienced the WITney® Educational Trailer to be inspired and educated about careers as professional truck drivers.

WIT IMAGE TEAM

Nomination Criteria and Eligibility

The new Image Team class of 2026 will be announced at the Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event on Friday March 27th held at the Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, KY. Through storytelling, advocacy, and visibility, these leaders are revving up the road to a more inclusive trucking industry. Who Can Be Nominated?

• Open to individuals, typically women, who are passionate and knowledgeable about the trucking industry and who embody WIT’s mission.

• Nominations should be made by a manager. A successful candidate is someone who is supported from the top down and encouraged and empowered to participate as a face of WIT as well as a representative of their company.

Nomination Requirements & Commitments

If selected, Image Team members are expected to:

• Attend the Salute to Women Behind the Wheel event on March 27, 2026, in Louisville, KY (the new class will be announced there)

• Attend bi-monthly virtual update meetings

• Participate in interviews, panels, and presentations, subject to availability and approval

• Help create content, including social media posts, blog articles, or other creative storytelling formats

• Conduct ride-alongs with legislators, regulators, or industry leaders (as schedules allow)

• Volunteer at major industry events, such as the Mid-America Trucking Show (March) and the WIT Accelerate! Conference (November)

Congratulations Jenny Lovering:

WIT’s 2025 Top Woman to Watch in Transportation

Jenny began her Walmart career as an order filler in 2005 and now currently leads Walmart’s facility in Lewiston, ME with over 180 drivers, servicing more than 130 Walmart stores across the New England market. Jenny was selected to serve on the National Board of Wreaths Across America and under her leadership, 100 Walmart Private Fleet Drivers transported over 100,000 wreaths to national cemeteries in 2024.

All of Jenny’s efforts have significantly contributed to the professional growth and development of her peers and the broader transportation community, especially women who are looking to enter, grow, or advance their transportation and supply chain careers.

There’s a road for everyone at Walmart!
