Theatre Workshop of Nantucket presents:

In the Next Room

8:30pm Centre Stage, Downstairs at 2 Centre St. Tickets $25. Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat ‘hysterical’ women (and some men), the play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household. In a seemingly perfect, wellto-do Victorian home, proper gentleman and scientist Dr. Givings has innocently invented an extraordinary new device: the vibrator. Adjacent to the doctor’s laboratory, his young and energetic wife tries to tend to their newborn daughter—and wonders exactly what is going on in the next room. When a new “hysterical” patient and her husband bring a wet nurse and their own complicated relationship into the doctor’s home, Dr. and Mrs. Givings must examine the nature of their own marriage, and what it truly means to love someone. Nominated for three Tony Awards in 2010, and the winner of the 2010 Will Glickman Award for Best New Play. “Insightful, fresh and funny, the play is as rich in thought as it is in feeling…one of the most gifted and adventurous American playwrights to emerge in recent years…In the Next Room is a true novelty: a sex comedy designed not for sniggering teenage boys--or grown men who wish they were still sniggering teenage boys--but for adults with open hearts and minds.” —New York Times Nantucket Arts Council’s 2011 ARTS FESTIVAL

Bob is one of fewer than a dozen musicians in North America who performs on the rare MacCann-duet concertina, an instrument once popular in the halcyon days of the British music hall before World War I. From New Zealand to Poland, audiences have gathered to enjoy his authentic sound, and to join with him in singing choruses. The Nantucket Arts Council is a nonprofit organization that supports and encourages a collaborative community of the visual, performing, and literary arts through education, grants, scholarships, and events. Dear Art Lovers, Join us and become a contributing partner in an organization that for 38 years has been a tireless advocate for the arts on Nantucket. The Council, a committed group of like-minded people, is aware of the importance of a viable and lively cultural scene, and of the positive and life-enhancing effect it has within a community. Another important and much thought-about concern of the Council is ways to support, encourage, and possibly even inspire the extraordinary reserve of talent living and working on the Island. We are so much richer, if we can acknowledge and embrace the working community of creative people living here as our neighbors and co-workers. Their infectious enthusiasm, vitality, and boundless energy is a source waiting to be tapped. We hope that you will join the Council and become a partner in our effort to see that the arts remain an active, life-enhancing force within our Island community.
