FG Synergises with State Governments on Mining

I

n the sustained effort to ensure the transformation of the mining sector and achieve the mandate of President Muhammadu Buhari to use the mining sector as a critical platform for economic diversification of the country, the Ministers of Mines and Steel Development, Arc. Olamilekan Adegbite and Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, have embarked on the tour of states of the country to strengthen the cooperation between all the tiers of government. The ministers have undertaken separate visits to a total of about 17 states seeking to integrate the states and local governments into the national strategic plan to explore and harness the mineral riches of the country. The states so far visited included Kogi, Kano, Osun, Benue and Nasarawa, Bauchi, Enugu, Ondo, Oyo, Ekiti and Ogun states. Others are Abia, Imo, Kwara, Cross River, Lagos, Kaduna and Niger states. used the National Council on Mining and Mineral Resources Development to reach out to all stakeholders in the sector. The third edition of the council meeting was held in September last year in Ekiti state. State governments in the federation were represented at the meeting by their commissioners,

permanent secretaries or special advisers on mineral resources development. Discussions at the meeting focused on fostering synergy between the three tiers of government and other stakeholders, developing strategies for sustainable mining and value addition as well as tackling security challenges, among others.
