from our founder Change without change – this is one of the core realizations along a yogic path. It is also crucial when practicing asana (yoga poses). The practitioner realizes that even though the shape, body position, and effort within poses change, the core underlying sensation of integration does not. This insight applies well beyond yoga and definitely describes what’s coming for Mind Body Solutions.

At our core, we continue to serve people living with trauma, loss, and disability and their caregivers. We help them live more profoundly and vibrantly in the only body they will ever have. We teach 11 adaptive yoga classes throughout the Twin Cities and serve people living with a wide range of ability and disability, medical conditions, and varying life situations. This includes people living with physical and intellectual disabilities, the elderly, survivors of domestic abuse, people living with trauma and PSTD, our veterans, and people nearing the end of life. We also continue to offer in-person training for yoga teachers in adaptive yoga while also offering in-person training for healthcare professionals about how to integrate mind-body principles into their every day practice. These activities remain unchanged.

And yet, there is also much changing. We just finished our first year in a new location within Yoga Center Retreat located in St. Louis Park, MN. This past year we have also made a substantial investment in digital capability and expertise. In early 2020, we are poised to launch a digital arm of Mind Body Solutions though a free YouTube channel. We call it The Hub. Supported by visionary supporters like you, The Hub will offer free content worldwide to all those searching for a different, more integrated way to live with trauma, loss, and disability. Our goal is to create both an in-person and digitally interactive community for the people we serve. Through stories, teachings, and training, we want to put a human face to trauma, loss, and disability and thus create a hybrid sanctuary for healing and wholeness. Keep an eye out for this launch.

Of course, there is more. We are also collaborating with Yoga4Change, a non-profit organization that serves the at-risk youth, people living with addictions, the incarcerated, and veterans. Currently, they are working throughout Florida. We are training their teachers and helping them prepare for a possible national expansion. This coming year, we are also partnering this year with Disabled Sports USA to offer in-person and digital yoga-based trainings at six VA Centers across the nation. This project, too, has the aim to expand to even more sites nationally in following years.

Yes, there is exciting change afoot, but our promise to you remains unchanged. We promise to be faithful stewards of your generosity. With your support, we promise to keep the transforming lives of the people we serve, including you, one day at a time.

meet kay and mike.

Discovering how to take time to smell the coffee and practice yoga, together...

Kay and Mike are both farm kids; more denim and flannel than spandex.

Kay grew up on a dairy operation in central Wisconsin and Mike raised soybeans, corn, and beef in southcentral Minnesota. They are a down-toearth, eyes-wide-open couple, accustomed to hard work, together.

They met while enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, Stout campus.

Kay was pursuing a teaching degree in what was then called Home Economics. Mike had two years remaining on his Vietnam era Army commitment.

Believing that the constant relocation required by military service wasn’t conducive to a strong family life, they waited another two years until Mike’s discharge. They’ve now been together fifty-one years, forty-seven of them married and have a daughter, Irene and a son, Matt.

Kay spent her career teaching “life skills” in elementary, middle and high school in a small district in rural Wisconsin. Mike likes to work with his hands, preferably with wood but was drafted/promoted into construction industry management. Both are now happily retired. In 2009, Kay was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease; a progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement. The pragmatic pair wasted no time and began investigating the prognosis of the disease, current research, support groups, and 8

palliative approaches like yoga, acupuncture and aromatherapy.

When Kay began having trouble sleeping, her daughter suggested she try yoga. Irene was taking instructor training in Hutchinson and invited her Mom to attend a class with her.

Kay found the practice far too vigorous for her abilities but found that doing Viparita Karani, often called Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose before bed helped with her sleep problems. Their research uncovered a study being conducted at the Udall Center at the University of Minnesota on the possible benefits of yoga for people with Parkinson’s. The twelve-week trial would have a cadre of twenty participants, working with two instructors for one-hour sessions twice weekly.

Entry to the twenty-member cohort was winnowed through a gauntlet of interviews and physical, mental and medical tests.

The program’s syllabus was strictly adhered to and taught by two professional yoga instructors, one of whom was Mind Body Solutions’ Program Director, Amy Samson-Burke. The trial was demanding. Two weeks into the study, two individuals dropped out. As Kay recalls, ”I came close to quitting; at that point, my level of exhaustion was increasing rapidly even though my body was feeling changes. I decided to give it one more

week. At the end of the fourth week, I made a new discovery; I could smell Mike’s morning coffee. I’d lost my sense of smell over ten years ago. As I shared this revelation with other study members, three people recognized the same changes. Be careful of what you ask for as it could come back to haunt you. The smell of perfume has become unacceptable and hurts the nose.”

After the study concluded, Kay and Mike tried yoga at another studio closer to home but it wasn’t what they were looking for. When they heard that Amy was teaching Ambulatory Adaptive Yoga at the Barr Bliss studio, they made the decision that the benefits to be gained were worth the trek from the far northern suburbs. They followed the migration with the rest of the Tuesday tribe to MBS’s new home in St. Louis Park.

Their loyalty to MBS is based on the warmth and skill of their teachers and assistants and the friendships they have developed in the class. Kay’s favorite asana is still Legs-Up-the-Wall.

Mike on the other hand as a self-described “class clown” prefers “BlocksOn-The-Head” as his pose of choice.

Their final words of advice: “Take Time To Stop and Smell The Coffee”

meet judy.

Healer, helper, survivor, clown...

Judy grew up in a tiny town in northern Illinois; her stepfather the local Lutheran Minister and her mother; tightly grafted to the village’s maternal grapevine, instantly aware of any rambunctious child’s indiscretions.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from UW Madison and has been working within the canon of western medicine for more than twenty-five years, beginning at the Portland VA Medical Center. When her sister had children, Judy returned to the Twin Cities to be closer to family. She practiced bedside nursing at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital and discharge planning at St. Paul Regions Hospital.

Judy’s introduction to holistic medicine occurred early in her career, during her preceptorship; an apprentice like experience between her junior and senior years in nursing school. A thirteen-year-old was scheduled for a spinal tap; a delicate and painful procedure. In this instance, the nurse practitioner and patient working together devised a strategy to use guided imagery/visualization and mild sedation. The plan worked well, avoiding the risks associated with general anesthesia.

Her next experience of complementary or integrative medicine came after working a twelve-hour overnight shift at Children’s. Though

exhausted, she stayed at the hospital to attend a presentation by Hunter Doherty “Patch” Adams an American physician, comedian, social activist, clown, author and founder of the Gesundheit! Institute. Talking afterward “Patch” recruited her to join an international group of seniors and other healthcare professional “clowns” to tour hospitals in Russia. One of the caveats was that they had to travel in full, colorful regalia. Imagine navigating through a TSA checkpoint today; you’d have to remove your shoes. It was the experience of a lifetime.

She enrolled in the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies (MAHS) at St. Catherine’s (Kate’s), an innovative graduate program that invites individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences to study the philosophy, science, and art of the holistic model of health and healing.

Halfway through the program, she received a devasting diagnosis: breast cancer.

During recovery, she realized that the western medical model wasn’t enough, she had to make changes to her diet, her exercise regime, her whole outlook on life. In Judy’s words, “I had experienced some yoga classes, but after my diagnosis was looking for a class that was specific to people who had recently been through some type of surgery and needed modification.”

A friend mentioned this guy “Matt

Sanford’ and the work he was doing with Mind Body Solutions, but she was in Afton and MBS was way out in Minnetonka. Then in 2016, she became aware of an opportunity: “A Mind-Body Approach to Trauma and PTSD: A Weekend Workshop with Matthew Sanford”. During that weekend she came to the realization that PTS (Post Traumatic Stress) was not limited to military veterans or survivors of natural disasters. Breast cancer is a form of both physical and psychological trauma and the mindbody approach differs from current trauma-based therapies for PTSD and trauma. That was the inflection point for her. Judy is a regular at Matthew’s Thursday morning class and stays to assist at the adaptive class later that morning.

Judy’s newest gig is as a Wellness Nurse for SASH (Support and Services at Home) at the Presbyterian Homes of Bloomington. Started in Vermont and funded by a two-year grant from Cargill, SASH coordinates the resources of social-service agencies, community health providers and nonprofit housing organizations to support older adults as well as people with special needs who choose to live independently at home. In this work, she also offers a weekly mindbody wellness class, during which she shares the healing principles of yoga gleaned from her experience with Mind Body Solutions.

A beautiful study in contrasts...

Trinity Hamilton is a study in mind/ body contrasts; The physicality, precision and drive required of ballet and professional dance versus the adaptability, flexibility and cerebral mindset of a healthcare provider. She began dancing in daycare, convincing her compadres that she was taking ballet. Trinity pretended to be in the corps de ballet, looking both ways down an imaginary row of tutus to be sure everyone was in line. Formal training began at age 3 and by age 6 she was in the studio three to four times a week.

Trinity reminisces, “My parents Marie and Mike and grandma Margaret always supported me financially and emotionally in my dance, but they always left the door open for me to quit.” Her stated goal at age 12 was to be a professional dancer at 21. She made it with four months to spare.

In June of 1996, Trinity was invited to practice with dancers at the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Less than a week later, she was asked to join the company and left for Seoul to dance in “Billboards” the Joffrey’s energy-charged rock ballet set to Prince‘s music. She traveled the world for eight years, performing first as a member of the company and later as a principal dancer. Her meteoric climb to the pinnacle of ballet heights reached an abrupt end in 2004 with a stunning

medical diagnosis of Type 1 Narcolepsy also known as “narcolepsy with cataplexy”.

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder characterized by overwhelming daytime drowsiness and sudden attacks of sleep.

Cataplexy is a sudden and uncontrollable loss of muscle tone, muscle weakness or paralysis that comes on during the day, often triggered by strong emotion, such as excitement or laughter.

In Trinity’s own words, “The development of cataplexy led to a loss of self-confidence and overmedicating in hopes my knees wouldn’t buckle at the top of my career, leading me headfirst into a battle with depression and losing the very identity I had worked my whole life to achieve. I made other excuses as to why I was leaving the Joffrey because I was in denial of what was really going on. Narcolepsy with cataplexy scared me into believing I was broken and permanently disconnected from my body.”

“Living with this disorder is a huge part of my life. From the full-body artistic expression of dance to forcing myself to shut down my emotions to avoid cataplexy is something I am still working on and recovering from today.”

In 2005, Trinity relocated to be with her parents in St. Petersburg, Florida and began treatment for her neurolog-

ical condition with a top sleep disorder specialist, Dr. Neil Feldman. While receiving proper care for her disorder, she spent the next four years heading up the ballet department at the Dance Theatre of Tampa as choreographer and ballet Instructor.

She joined the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group in late 2009 and performed in the character roles of “La Belle” and “La Femme” in “Mystere” the company’s longest-running show at the Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. The physical demands were taxing; the troupe performed year-round; 10 shows a week, Saturday through Wednesday.

Offstage, Trinity made time to earn her BA in Liberal Arts through LEAP an internationally recognized Bachelor’s degree program created by St. Mary’s College specifically designed for current and former professional dancers.

Professional dance while ethereal is also a grueling mind/body practice with frequent injuries, coupled with a constant battle to maintain proper weight, appearance and self-esteem. As she reflects “I am still so blessed to have had that time and look back on it fondly even though I do not miss it. With decades of wear and tear on my body and my back doctor strongly recommending retirement, I

knew my professional dance career was coming to an end. I left with much love and happiness for my experience.�

She moved to the mountains to take Vinyasa teacher certification training at the Samadhi center for yoga in Denver.

Two instructors who had studied under Matthew Sanford offered a workshop on adaptive yoga, and she was hooked.

She attended the Mind Body Solutions Workshops I & II in the fall of 2017 and completed the advanced studies course at MBS in the spring of this year.

While Trinity considers the Chicagoland area to be her home, she returned to Florida last year to be near her mother after the loss of her father. The curtain has begun rising on the second act of Trinity’s life role as an adaptive yoga instructor and certified nursing assistant (CNA). She offers in-home practice for people living with trauma, disability, and chronic illness to awaken the mind/body relationship. She dreams of creating a community space where instructors, artists,and therapists can collaborate to offer hope and positive change; a onestop-shop for anyone living with physical or psychological challenges to receive coordinated adaptive yoga, art and music therapy, acupuncture, and counseling. photo courtesy Cirque du Soleil

a mind-body approach to trauma and PTSD

We adapt the principles of yoga for people in physically difficult and changing bodies. Our work is accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or neurological ability. Through our weekly yoga classes at our studio, at Tula Yoga and Wellness in St.Paul and Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Center, we unleash the best of humanity by improving the quality of life and providing hope and healing in unexpected ways.

We offer an experiential approach in exploring how trauma and post-traumatic stress affect the mind-body relationship.

Through guided experiential activities, group discussion, and creative problem solving, participants gain an intuitive understanding of how PTS affects a person’s sense of presence both within his or her body and within the world. In this workshop, professional caregivers, educators and yoga teachers discover our unique approach to helping, rather than simply treating, people with PTSD.

Our pre-eminent adaptive yoga teacher training is based upon the unique experience of our Founder Matthew Sanford, an award-winning author, nationally renowned yoga teacher, and paraplegic for the last 40 years. Our goal: We want a skillful adaptive yoga teacher in every community. We offer progressive levels of study in week long workshops as well as a Opening Yoga Instructor Certificate Program.

living ‘til the end The final stages of life can be filled with uncertainty. Mind Body Solutions’ Living til the End program is designed to nourish both the individual and their caregiver(s) during this difficult life transition. This program introduces participants to a mind-body approach that redefines the concepts of healing and living well. Using the universal principles of yoga and simple practices taught by trained Mind-Body Ambassadors, this program will help both patients and their caregivers find ease, relief, and connection in this time of shared uncertainty.

our year In addition to offering 11 weekly adaptive yoga classes, community outreach, Opening Yoga teacher trainings, “Living ‘til the End” and new programs tailored for healthcare providers both on site and in our studio, we conituned to share our work and our mission in a variety of ways this year...

Over the past year, we welcomed another new batch of eager, thoughtful, and creative yoga teachers into a deeper level of MBS training - the Opening Yoga Instructor certification program. Each participant made the commitment to expand their teaching by taking part in a self-directed course of study. At their own pace within a three-year term, candidates complete two experiential courses, as well as additional studies under the guidance of MBS senior faculty. OYI graduates are able to teach anyone, including people living with neurological deficit, those suffering with PTSD, mental health conditions and the elderly.

OYI Certificate candidates gain unparralleled insight into the nature of trauma, loss and disability while employing a method that derives from universal principles of the asana.

These students are part of a unique group who are recognized for their exceptional diligence, creativity, and commitment to furthering the principles of yoga as they apply to people of all abilities.

Our 6th annual yogathon started with a fun, full house of yogis at our annual kickoff event, led by founder Matthew Sanford! From there, yogis around the world launched into their month of sharing their practice to help raise awarenss and much-needed resources for MBS. Proceeds helped us fund our opening yoga training scholarship program, helped buy new props and equipment, and helped offer MBS staff additional PTSD training. Above all, it helped us continue providing 10,000+ participant hours of adaptive yoga here, and tens of thousands more nationally, to those living with trauma, loss, and disability. Part of the reason for our great success this year was due to radical generosity of yoga teachers around the country. We invited MBS trained teachers to get involved in the yogathon by offering a “Kiss My Asana” donation class in their community during the yogathon.

Wow, did our tribe step up. Dozens of classes, events, and gatherings helped us reach our goal!

Once again, the Body.Mind.Story. workshops provided a rich environment for the creation of incredible stories! Participants from coast to coast came to learn from and grow into their own story. Renowned storytelling trio Kevin Kling, Patricia Francisco, and Matthew Sanford led the brave storytellers through a ground breaking new approach to teaching storytelling. Participants also recognized the true healing power of a story shared - both for the teller and the listener. The goal was to help workshop participants explore the role of both mind and body in recognizing and telling the stories of their lives. The overwhelming response and success of this workshop enticed us to go big next year.

our future entering the digital world...

welcome to the new age Mind Body Solutions is entering a New Age, at least for us.

No, we are not heading deeper into crystals, incense, or essential oils. We are jumping headfirst into an expanded digital age. Yes, this last year we invested in video equipment and digital capability. We even mostly learned how to use it! Not bad considering we are a predominately middle-aged staff that barely knows how to use our own cell phones.

A big launch is coming, early in 2020! Mind Body Solutions is releasing a new addition to our YouTube channel. We call it The Hub, and through it, we will share nearly everything we know -- all at no cost to the viewer. On this channel, you will be able to watch and make comments about our recorded adaptive yoga classes, short instructional clips intended for people trying to teach adaptive yoga, and extended videos sharing the stories of our adaptive students and their one-on-one work with our founder, Matthew Sanford. You’ll also see Matthew, along with other guests, sharing more wide-ranging thoughts, reflections, and insights about anything and everything mind-body related. This last offering we affectionately call In The Matrix.

The question is why? Why would we do this to ourselves? Why would we try a brand new venture so far into middle age? The answer is simple. Expanding our digital offerings increases the reach of our mission. It makes our insights more accessible, more digestible. Our content will now be accessed without physical or geographic barriers, and available on a daily basis from virtually any device.

Our aim is to offer more than classes, lectures, and insights online that renders the audience passive. Instead, we hope to create a hybrid community of people and stories (both digitally and in-person) who share similar experiences in a world that is moving too fast and is so clearly out of joint. And always, the new age of Mind Body Solutions will continue to put a human face on universally shared ability, disability, trauma, and loss. We are better, together.
