Simple Sensations Matter GREETINGS FROM OUR FOUNDER Life during the pandemic reminds me of a joke. What is the best way to make God laugh? Tell It all your plans. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s not to get too attached to future plans. At MBS, we’ve been working on a work-around.

Last year, I wrote that we should wait and hold steady, that we were living in a tumultuous, uncertain time, but we would come out the other side in the spring. Well, it’s 12 months later and here we are again, a little wearier, a little less fulfilled, and maybe a little crabbier.

At MBS, we have an unassailable plan for 2022, one that cannot be derailed by uncertainty and the unknown: we’re going to focus on simple sensations in everything we do – both for ourselves and in our work with others. That’s right, I’m talking about kindness and laughter… gratitude and grounding…the taste of water, the feeling of sunlight, and the hope of a blue sky. We’re not just going to wait and hold steady. We’re going to come back alive through the sensations of our bodies, not just through the judgments of our minds. In other words, we’re going to practice our mission in everything we do.

Of course, we also have more formal plans for 2022. We’re going to teach free adaptive yoga classes, mostly online. We’re going to train yoga teachers and help healthcare professionals, hopefully sometimes in person. We’re going to create innovative and groundbreaking content for people living with trauma, loss, and disability and their caregivers. We’re going to mentor people.

We’re also going to create long-lasting digital content for anyone who is interested. And we might even sing and dance while we do it, at least on the ‘inside.’

Come join us. Let’s win this period of time by focusing on the ‘how’ and not just the ‘what’ of what we do. Everyone gets to choose their own ‘how’ and that is how we are going to win.

To infinity and beyond...

Online to infinity! No, Buzz Lightyear did not join the MBS staff in 2021, but we do have him with us in spirit.

Always on a mission and always ready to stand tall, Buzz is ready to engage with whatever lies in from of him.

This damn pandemic has put MBS in a similar position. And we do believe that our efforts in expanding our digital presence would make both you and Buzz Lightyear proud.

We have done more than put adaptive yoga classes online for free. We also continue to train yoga teachers and healthcare professionals online. We have also been building on an existing digital presence. We revamped our website and have been on a continuous improvement mission all year. Our mission parameters have been quicker-hitting clarity, ease of use, and improving user experience. Check it out.

If you didn’t know, we have had a successful newsletter for years. It’s gotten a content revamp and Buzz especially enjoys the recent hand mudras to go along with the MBS pose of the month. We continue to ride the tried and true spaceship YouTube and grandpa Facebook and have increased our focus on the power booster Instagram. Under the pretense of mission focus, Twitter and TikTok remain distant and distracting galaxies.

In all seriousness, MBS is grounded first and foremost in our mission to create meaningful and transformative content for people living with trauma, loss, and disability and their caregivers. We promise to reach more people in more ways in 2022 and we do so with a Buzz Lightyear sense of adventure.

What a year...

As you'll see on the following pages, it's been a big year for MBS. As you scroll through these high level activities and accomplishments, take note of three general themes. We greatly increased our reach in helping veteran populations, including an exciting and on-going collaboration with the Veterans Yoga Project. In addition, through numerous collaborations with Bessel van der Kolk and his organization The Trauma Research Foundation, we have greatly strengthened our position as a thought-leader in the area of trauma and body-centered healing and recovery. Finally, this year, we have deepened and expanded our direct and accessible content for people living with trauma, loss, and disability, and their caregivers.

From them, we learn. For them, we work to offer connection, support, insight, and hope. The people you'll meet on the next few pages have graciously, bravely, and generously shared their stories with us. They are the who behind our why.

Over the last 6 months, Christian has been on medical leave after yet another major surgery (21 in total over the years, 13 of which have been major). During this leave, he attended our “Yoga as a Complementary Approach to Whole Health Living” workshop offered to VA healthcare professionals in collaboration with Move United. He also has attended both of our online “Introduction to Adaptive Yoga” courses, has regularly attended our weekly online adaptive yoga classes, and entered our mentorship program for healthcare professionals. In addition to his extensive background in exercise science and fitness training, Christian is a very adept and inquisitive yoga student. He comes to Mind Body Solutions to learn the subtler interplay between ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ movement. He wants to help his vets not only stay physically fit but mentally fit as well. Along these lines, Christian is developing a novel, integrative approach to fitness. He is helping people that Mind Body Solutions wouldn’t otherwise reach.

This is THE MBS mission at work. Christian is passionate about helping our veterans. He knows what it means to suffer on both the ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ of traumatic injury. He has been on a path of exploration and healing to transform his own life and helps others do the same. Christian is now back full time in his role as a recreational therapist at the VA. Y our support means Christian and other healthcare providers like him will continue to serve veterans in new and innovative ways.

Lindsay’s survival made her a national celebrity of sorts. While still in the hospital, she did countless local, regional, and national interviews, including NBC’s Today Show. Everyone loves a survivor. Tired of the hospital and highly motivated, Lindsay was released in June and was still ready to leave northeast Iowa. Guided by the people around her, Lindsay embraced her new situation and moved to Seattle to become a prosthetist, all this before she was even fitted for her first pair of prosthetics.

New legs, new state, new city, new life was too much. Lindsay found out quickly that prosthetics are not as simple as strapping them on and going. It’s all about the fit. Unable to stand or walk for extended periods of time because of excruciating pain, Lindsay withdrew from school and got hired as a prosthetist technician. For the next decade or so, Lindsay lived in various places up and down the west coast and discovering a much more culturally diverse world. She eventually landed in Pleasanton, CA. She had realized quickly that a simple key to living a high quality of life as a double amputee was finding the right prosthetic fit. But finding that fit was more than a physical challenge. It was also an exploration in subtle sensations, in creating an optimal ‘felt’ connection between organic and artificial limbs. Although she became a spokesperson for a leading prosthetics company and made a living traveling all around the country telling her incredible story, she struggled to describe an extraordinary fact: Lindsay could still ‘feel’ her lower legs and feet, despite their amputations.

Then Lindsay found yoga. Not only did her yoga community make her feel like she belonged, something else was happening. Through yoga, Lindsay found language for what she was feeling, a more articulate way of describing a better fit, both with her prosthetics and in her life. Over time, Lindsay grew weary of the travel and constantly sharing her story on the road. She turned her attention to fitness and fitness instruction. She met her husband and they had their first child.

Lindsay and her husband now have two children and live in Rochester, MN. When she came to MBS, she was already an accomplished yogi. She had figured out some amazing adaptations for her practice. What she finds with us is community, a “home” as she says it. She also finds a place where no one blinks an eye when she speaks of feeling her missing feet or of sensations that bridge the gulf between missing and artificial limb. When MBS was still holding in-person classes, Lindsay would make the over 3-hour round trip to take Matthew’s Thursday class. She has taken two of our online teacher trainings and is a featured presenter in our trainings for other teachers from around the world. Lindsay’s yoga practice and conversations with Matthew are also featured on our YouTube channel. When watching and listening to her, we gain access to the stunning potential for adaptation within the human nervous system. Simply put, Lindsay experiences sensation in limbs that are not physically present. The implications are mind-boggling.
