2016 Made in Maui County Festival Post-Event Report

2016 Event Overview

The Made in Maui County Festival drew over 11,000 of residents and visitors to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Nov. 4 & 5.

On November 4 and 5, Maui County’s largest products show, the 3rd Annual Made in Maui County Festival, drew thousands of residents and visitors to the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. Presented by the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce, over 140 vendors, including 16 companies from Molokai and 1 from Lanai participated in this two-day event – a veritable showcase of Made-in-MauiCounty products. In addition, 12 food trucks also presented a diverse menu of island cuisine in this year’s Food Court on Saturday. While the Festival continues to provide a unique shopping experience, it’s the overall mission of this event that has made a real difference in the lives of many small businesses. Specifically, the Festival was created to open doors for Maui County’s entrepreneurs. The event’s goals are to: •

Showcase locally made products that have a 51% value added in Maui County to both visitors and residents. These products included foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and any other products that meet the criteria for vendor participation.

Help to grow our islands’ businesses by providing opportunities for participating vendors to meet with prospective retailers and wholesalers and connect with new customers.

Help strengthen our community by encouraging job creation and diversification of our economy.

During the 2016 Festival two days of fabulous shopping were offered to the general public: •

Serious shoppers who wanted a one-day head start were allowed to purchase tickets for a special “Shoppers Preview” on Friday, November 4 from 1:30 pm to 6 pm. Attendees enjoyed the Festival’s opening ceremonies, light refreshments, and also received a free Festival tote bag. Tickets ($35 per person) were available via the MACC Box Office.

On Saturday, November 5, the Big Festival Day opened from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Public admission was $5 (at the gate), children 12 and under were free. Saturday’s festivities included product demonstrations, a fashion show, food trucks, and prize drawings. The first 2,000 attendees received a free Festival tote bag.

Impact: In reviewing the impact of the Festival, below are some of the highlights of the 2016 event: •

Over 11,000 visitors and residents attended the two-day Festival of which approximately 35% percent were visitors.

In a post-event evaluation, participating Product Vendors reported as a result of the two-day Festival: - Over $512,922 in total product sales. (Compared to $416,000 in 2015 and $300,000 in 2014). - Over 335 total new wholesale accounts/orders were closed. (Compared to 250 in 2015, and 180 in 2014).

Over 360 qualified wholesale buyers, retailers, and distributors attended a special invitation-only Buyers Preview on Friday, November 4 (compared to 338 buyers in 2015).

Mayor Alan Arakawa declared the week of October 29-November 5, 2016 as “Made in Maui County Festival Week” in recognition of the importance of small businesses who continue to serve as the backbone of our islands’ economy by helping to strengthen our community through job creation and economic diversification.

In an effort to mediate traffic congestion, for the first time the Festival offered free shuttle transportation to/from War Memorial Gym on Saturday, November 5. Additional street signage and an updated parking plan also helped with traffic flow.

The Mayor’s Made in Maui County Festival Booth Contest was held on Friday, November 4 and the winners announced during the opening ceremonies. The 2016 Booth Contest winners were: Best in Show: Wrappily Tent category 1st Place: Maui Crisps Tent category 2nd Place: `Opihi Maui Tent category 3rd Place: Sherri Reeve Gallery Table category 1st Place: Char’s Bars Table category 2nd Place: Maui Mini Aloha Shirt Ornaments Table category 3rd Place: Hali`imaile Distilling Company

As a result of the success of the Made in Maui County Festival, a new online shopping resource called the “Made in Maui County Marketplace” – www.MadeInMauiCounty.com – was launched in October 2016. The Marketplace website is a project of the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) in cooperation with the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. It was created to provide local businesses with an opportunity to showcase their Made-in-Maui-County products and to connect with prospective customers year-round. This annual event would not have been possible without the Maui County Council and Mayor Alan Arakawa whose vision and support keeps this Festival affordable for our islands’ small businesses. A big mahalo also goes out to the Festival’s dedicated event committee, sponsors, Festival Friends, and volunteers who collectively play a key role in producing a high-caliber event. Lastly, we thank everyone who shops local. Through your support we can continue to invest in our islands’ economy, help to build our local workforce, and fuel entrepreneurship. Everyone benefits both directly and indirectly from these efforts.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our islands’ economy and we are proud to support our dedicated entrepreneurs who help to strengthen our community through job creation and economic diversification. It is the reason why the annual Made in Maui County Festival was originally created – to provide opportunities for our small businesses to grow and succeed.” – Mayor Alan Arakawa

Made in Maui County Marketplace In October 2016, local businesses got a boost thanks to the official launch of a new Made in Maui County Marketplace website – www.MadeInMauiCounty.com. A project of the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) in cooperation with the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce; the Marketplace serves as a one-stop, online shoppers resource for wholesale buyers and consumers seeking locally made products. Not only will visitors on this site discover a wide array of merchandise, but the Marketplace also provides a directory for the public to connect with Maui County’s entrepreneurs year-round. A strategic marketing campaign is also helping to increase website traffic. Businesses who have participated and/or who have been approved as a Made in Maui County Festival product vendor are eligible to be included on The Marketplace website.

Vendor Testimonials “The Made in Maui County Festival continues to grow and it is exciting to see how it has become a ‘go-to’ event for locals and visitors alike… It can be challenging to run a business especially when you’re trying to balance family life with business life. But, I love the creative outlet that this business gives me and I’m grateful for the support I’ve received from the Festival’s organizers.”

- Shelley Pellegrino, ‘Alohi Images Maui

“The Made in Maui County Festival is a wonderful, first-class event that gives us the opportunity to showcase our products in front of thousands of local folk and visitors. We truly couldn’t ask for more and after three years of participation, we’re looking forward to many more in the future. Much mahalo!”

- Shaun Bayles, Chic Naturals

“Participating in the Made in Maui County Festival for the past few years has brought us such great success! Our company really got out there to the public, and our sales grew by more than 100 percent because of this event.”

- Blaine Apo, Maui Crisps

“I am very grateful to have a County that is so supportive of small business, especially to recognize and promote products that are made here. The Festival has been outstanding for my company. Everyone who puts this event together is wonderful to work with – personal, professional, and helpful in every way. Because of your efforts I have grown my business, become confident and encouraged and inspired by all of you. Thank you for your helping hands. I really feel through everything this Festival offers I really can become successful. Mahalo and aloha from the bottom of my heart.”

2016 Made in Maui County Festival Post-Event Report

“It was the first time for us to participate in the Festival and we were very nervous. Your staff and volunteers were very organized and made the day so much easier for us. They were also so very friendly and helpful. Great job, all around! Made our day so very enjoyable. Already getting new accounts! It definitely seems like you guys been doing this way longer than two years.”

- Brian and Janis Young, Wow-Wee Maui Candy Bar

“Mahalo for an amazing event! We would love to return next year, if you’ll have us. There is no way we could have made all of these great industry contacts without this event. It’s exciting to think about growing our company in the coming year and possibly getting to a point where we will hire extra help.”

- Jen Fordyce, Waikapu Pickles

“The Made in Maui County Festival is by far the biggest yielding event Wrappily participates in. Having done the event for three years now, it’s allowed my brand reputation to grow and helped me build relationships with Maui’s consumer and wholesale markets. The whole event has a happy vibe and lots of good energy. It’s wonderful and truly a benefit to do business with shoppers and buyers who are enjoying themselves so much!”

- Sara Smith, Wrappily

“By participating in Made in Maui County Festival I have gained new contacts and loyal customers. They keep coming back to the Festival to get their favorite items. One couple who vacations here every year told me that they book their vacation around the Festival time just so they can come get their products even though they know we ship. They love the event and get all their holiday shopping done at the same time!”

- Ku’ulei Mashino, Upcountry Maui Favorites

“As brand new business owners, this event definitely helped us move our company forward. Being placed before real buyers allowed us the opportunity to hear exactly what the industry was looking for and how simple or even minor changes can make a difference for our business and product. This type of advice makes a huge impact and wouldn’t otherwise be made available to us if we weren’t given this opportunity to participate in the Made in Maui County Festival.”

- Elle’s Kitchen, Gary Lee

2016 Made in Maui County Festival Post-Event Report

“This was a great event for my business. I was exposed to a huge local clientele who embraced my locally designed and produced product. I was also bolstered by the opportunity to sell my product at retail price. It gave me a nice capital infusion that I will use to invest in upgraded equipment.”

- Maggie Walker, Cookies Maui

“Because of the Festival, I have acquired three new wholesale accounts that I still have to this day. I would have never met these companies any other way. Also, the Festival gives a real authenticity to my company which is invaluable.”

- Patty Holbrook, Color Your Own

“The Made in Maui County Festival is such a well organized, professional event. The support that the organizers provide the vendors is unmatched. We are very grateful to be a part of this truly outstanding event.”

- Libby Behn, Maui Island Love

“The Made in Maui County Festival provided a fantastic opportunity for the public to see what I’m doing as a 100 percent made-on-Maui small business owner. By participating in the Festival over this last year I saw so many people that remembered meeting me the previous year. Overall, it was very helpful in bringing an island-wide awareness for my business.”

- Johnne Perez, Maui Drift

“This was a fantastic event. I’ve done product shows for 20 years, but I’ve never done a show like this one where it was all about promoting Maui County businesses. All the Festival staff and volunteers were absolutely fantastic and the customers were super great! We got wholesale orders, did really well on retail sales, made connections, and even got some custom orders for big items. So all-around it was a very positive experience participating in this year’s Made in Maui County Festival.”

- Alicia Blackwell of Island Creations on Lanai

“I think this Festival is just remarkable. It’s a tremendous vision to support our local businesses by bringing thousands of visitors and residents and hundreds of wholesale buyers to one location. As part of the Maui Coffee Association, we not only want to showcase our products but we want the world to know that Maui grows great coffee, and this Festival provides us with a strong vehicle to get this word out.”

- Jeff Ferguson, MauiGrown Coffee Company Store

2016 Made in Maui County Festival Post-Event Report

“In 2015, I participated in the Festival as a decal vendor, but thanks to the success I experienced during last year’s event I was able to expand my business. Recently, I made the big leap to work on my business full time. We expanded our product line – we now offer both apparel and decals, and we moved our company to a larger location. Also, thanks to an awesome internship program with Molokai High School, we were fortunate to secure students interns. It’s a win-win for small businesses like myself to get additional manpower while being able to mentor our future entrepreneurs about what it takes to run a company.”

- Lyndon Dela Cruz, Lanikila Designs on Molokai

“Preparing for this event was very beneficial in moving my company forward. As an artist, this event propelled me to challenge the limitations of creative inspiration – to drive myself to create pieces with the productivity of time management while staying true to my vision. I also learned how to better calculate, break down and section financial costs and benefits for the pieces I made in order to maintain quality materials without incurring expenses. Although there were some challenges I am now aware and better prepared for the future. Lastly, this event has tested my ability to step forward not just as the creator of my art, but also as a promoter of my art. To move outside of my comfort zone, as the artist in the background creating, to the artist in the forefront sharing promoting and connecting.”

- Keoki Goeorge Johnson, Keawaike Hawaiian Jewelry

“It’s really great to get exposure for my food truck along with the other local companies. I think that’s the key aspect for us, being part of a homegrown event with nothing but local businesses participating is exciting.”

- Ken Silva, Sumo Dogs of Maui

“Last year was our first year participating in the Made in Maui County Festival. We were caught totally off guard the first day. I got at least seven new wholesale accounts and a ton of new customers. We do custom orders so were slammed on our custom orders all the way up to Christmas thanks to this Festival.”

- Kiana Yasak, Opihi Maui

“Just the shear volume of people who came was awesome, intimidating and exciting at the same time. This event was the most intense market research we’ve ever conducted so far. Being able to interact with people and get their immediate feedback on our flavors and packaging has provided us with invaluable information. It really validates what we do and that we’re heading in the right direction.”

- Justin Orr, HI Spice 16

2016 Made in Maui County Festival Post-Event Report

“This event has continued to propel my business enabling it to grow and expand. When I first started, my company was still very much in the “farmer market” style. My products were in tin containers with labels I printed from a home computer. I wasn’t in any stores until after the first Made on Maui County Festival. By the second year, I got proper labeling for the pre-existing products and better containers, which led to bigger wholesale accounts. For the 2016 Festival I rebranded, added new products, got a website, and had enough work to hire help! This event means so much to me. The exposure my products get and the setting at the MACC has really accelerated the growth of my business, encouraged me to expand my product lines and enabled me to make connections with shop owners and wholesalers in a personable way that has led to lasting business connections. I truly can’t thank all who are involved in making this event happen!”

- Leila Comeaux, Leila’s

“Being in the 2016 event not only opened up wholesale doors for us, but also having our brand included on the Festival’s website offered us constant community connections. Throughout the year, we also receive Festival emails offering more growth opportunities. It is absolutely a year-round benefit to participate in this event. The Made in Maui County Festival has also helped us move our brand forward with social media and stock planning. Prepping for an event this size really tests our business’ planning ability and forces us to think outside the box.”

- Shanna Kanahele, Na Koa Brand

“This was our first year, but it was amazing. I have never seen so many motivated buyers anywhere on Maui!”

- Joshua Kramer, Maui Shrub Farm

“I believe the Festival helped my company become much more wholesale ready. We learned so much about how to better brand and market our products. The wholesale contacts made were quality businesses and I am so excited for all of the new possibilities this brings. Overall, I love, love, LOVE participating in the Festival, and felt it was a great success in moving my business forward. I absolutely look forward to participating again next year. The Festival organizers are always wonderful and do an amazing job organizing this huge event. Thank you so much for all your hard work on behalf of all made-in-Maui businesses.”

- Carol Bodin, Uli Kai Designs
