2015 Event event Overview overview On November 6 and 7, 2015, the 2nd Annual Made In Maui County Festival (MIMCF) was held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) in Kahului. Presented by the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development (OED) and the Maui Chamber of Commerce this two-day event is considered the largest products show in Maui County. Its goals are as follows: Today, the event’s goal remains the same: •

Showcase locally made products that have a 51% value added in Maui County to both visitors and residents. These products included foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and any other products that meet the criteria for vendor participation.

•

Help to grow our islands’ businesses by providing opportunities for participating vendors to meet with prospective retailers and wholesalers and connect with new customers.

•

Help strengthen our community by encouraging job creation and diversification of our economy.

A total of 140 product vendors and 13 food trucks participated in the 2015 event. Due to the demand, a waiting list was also established. Product vendors had to meet specific criteria in order to participate, including: Attend a mandatory vendor training • Have a business based in Maui County (GET license required) • Products being offered for sale had to meet a minimum 51% of their value added in Hawaii. • The product mix, quality and products’ creativity value were also considered during the vendor selection process. •

The MIMCF took place over two days and attracted over 10,000 visitors and residents of which approximately 30 percent were visitors. On Friday, November 6th, a Buyers Preview and Shoppers Preview was held from 2 pm to 4 pm. Attendees enjoyed the Festival’s opening ceremonies at approximately 5 pm in the Pavilion and light refreshments were served. Attendees also received a free Festival tote bag. Over 338 qualified wholesale buyers, retailers and distributors attended the invitation-only Buyers Preview which offered them an opportunity to shop for Hawaii-made products and to talk one-on-one with vendors. In addition, for the first time, serious shoppers who wanted a one-day head start were allowed to purchase tickets for a special Shoppers Preview on Friday. Cost was $35 per person and 293 tickets were sold through the MACC Box Office generating an additional revenue of $10,255.

On Saturday, November 7th, MIMCF’s “Big Festival Day” was open from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Public admission was $5 (at the gate) and children 12 and under were free. Saturday’s festivities included product demonstrations, a fashion show, food trucks, and prize drawings. The first 2,000 attendees received a free Festival tote bag. On both days, attendees could also enter Hawaiian Airlines’ drawing for a chance to win 120,000 HawaiianMiles. The prize was donated by Hawaiian Airlines, one of the event’s sponsors. The second Mayor’s MIMCF Booth Contest was held on Friday, November 6th and the winners announced during the opening ceremonies. The criteria used for judging were: creative product merchandising; presentation of overall space; professional, creative and easy to read signage; and cohesive staff attire. Contest judges were: Patti Gardner of Maui Marble and Granite, Rici Guild of RCI Interiors, and Hal Jobe of Lattitudes Garden. A sampling of the coverage received is summarized in the Marketing section of this report. In evaluating the impact of the 2015 MIMCF, post-event evaluation forms were submitted by participating product vendors who reported as a result of the two-day event: Over $416,000 in total product sales • Over 250 total new wholesale accounts/orders were closed • Over 4,500 leads for future sales/wholesale accounts •

Testimonials were also received from vendors and the general public (refer to page 49). In summary, the MIMCF once again served as a catalyst for stimulating our islands’ economy through its support of our island’s small businesses. By providing a forum for our locally owned, independent businesses to expand and succeed, we can continue to keep money in our local economy, help to build our local workforce, encourage ingenuity and diversity, and fuel entrepreneurship. Everyone benefits both directly and indirectly from these efforts. 3

“ Small business is the core of the economic engine that drives our local economy. We are truly fortunate to have such dedicated and hardworking business owners involved in this showcase of Made in Maui County products that attracts visitors and local people alike.

Vendor Applications, Sponsors Now Being Accepted for 2nd Annual Made In Maui County Festival WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai‘i – The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development announced today that vendor applications and sponsorship forms are now available for the 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival, which will be open to the public on Saturday, November 7, 2015. The event will be held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului and is being presented by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce. Over 9,400 residents and visitors attended the 2014 inaugural event, which featured 130 vendors showcasing a wide variety of made-in-Maui County products including foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashion, gifts, collectibles and more— all in one location. More than $300,000 in products were sold over the weekend and participating vendors reported gaining 180 new wholesale accounts and 1,070 new business leads for future sales. Riding the wave of last year’s success, event organizers are looking to expand this year’s Festival by offering additional vendors, products and food trucks. “Supporting our local businesses is a win-win for our community,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa. “Helping to grow our local product companies not only helps strengthen our community through job creation and diversification of our economy, but our visitors and residents also benefit by having an incredible array of locally made products to choose from at the Festival.” Product vendors must attend a mandatory vendor training and meet specific criteria to participate, including having their business based in Maui County (GET license required), with products being offered for sale meeting a minimum 51% of their value added in Hawaii. The product mix, quality and creativity value of products will also be considered during the vendor selection process. Exhibit space is limited, and a limited number of local food truck vendors will also have an opportunity to sell their menu items in the Food Court during Saturday’s Festival. Sponsorship opportunities are available for companies wishing to show their support for Maui County’s entrepreneurs and their products while increasing visibility for their own business. Sponsor benefits include event promotions, visibility during the Festival, access to a private buyers’ preview event, program advertising and more. For information and to download a Vendor Packet, Food Truck Packet and/or Sponsor Packet, visit the event’s official website: www.MadeInMauiCountyFestival.com, email info@MadeInMauiCountyFestival. com or call ph. (808) 270-7710. Connect with the Festival on Facebook (“Like” the page for updates), Twitter (#MIMCF2014), Instagram and Pinterest.

Made in Maui County Festival announces first round of product vendors WAILKU, Maui, HI – With nearly 19 weeks to go until the 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival opens on November 6 and 7, the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce announced the first group of approved vendors who will be participating in this year’s event. Considered the largest products show in Maui County, the 2015 Festival will feature over 140 vendors. The event will also be increasing the number of food trucks from 7 in 2014 to 16 this year. To date, a total of 68 local businesses have been approved to participate and over 50 applications are pending review early next month. While the 2015 Product Vendor Application submission deadline was originally announced as August 31st, due to the high number of applicants and limited vendor space, the Festival committee is encouraging local businesses interested in participating to submit their applications sooner rather than later. “We’re thrilled with the tremendous response to our request for vendors and we appreciate everyone who took the time to submit an application,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “We’re very fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers serving on our vendor selection committee. Applications are carefully reviewed each month and evaluated based upon businesses meeting certain criteria including having their products being Made in Hawaii as well as compatibility, desirability, marketability, uniqueness, level of competitive pricing, and quality of products.” In addition to promoting vendors and their products to thousands of residents and visitors, the Made in Maui County Festival also provides exposure to volume and wholesale buyers giving our local entrepreneurs an opportunity to grow their businesses. We can’t wait for November!” Kauionalani Waller of Maui Nui Wear is excited to be one of this year’s returning vendors. “Last year’s Made in Maui County Festival provided the perfect, proactive grassroots initiative to support, grow and elevate Maui’s small businesses,” said Waller. “As a vendor, Maui Nui Wear had the opportunity to gain exposure that would have been hard to achieve on our own. Our company more than doubled our wholesale orders as a result of this event. The Festival is another great Maui-style initiative that helps our islands’ small businesses while perpetuating the spirit of aloha.” “We are honored to be selected as one of this year’s returning product vendors,” said Shaun Bayles, co-owner of Chic Naturals. “Last year’s inaugural Festival was such an exceptional event! The 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival bigger and better than ever! WAILUKU, Maui, Hawaii – September 28, 2015 – When Maui County’s largest products show, the 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival, opens to the public on November 6 and 7, 2015 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, the event will boast a larger format with more products, more vendors, more food trucks, and more reasons to buy local. This week, the Festival’s presenters – the County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development and the Maui Chamber of Commerce – announced the final list of vendors who will be participating in this upcoming November event. In total, nearly 150 product vendors and food trucks are confirmed, over 40 of which are new to the event. Product vendors had to meet certain criteria in order to participate, including having their business based in Maui County. Products being offered for sale had to meet a minimum 51% of their value added in Hawaii. The product mix, quality and creativity value of products were also considered during the selection process. Last year, the inaugural event attracted over 9,500 visitors and residents and 130 vendors participated. Vendors reported over $300,000 in product sales transactions, over 180 new accounts and wholesale orders closed, and over 1,000 leads for future sales and wholesale accounts generated. This year, the Festival is focused on expanding the event’s impact. “Improving the business environment in Maui County is important to us, and this Festival has been very successful at doing just that,” said Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa. “It was a great success last year and it is poised to be an even bigger event this year. It’s all part of our efforts to strengthen and diversify our local economy and I encourage everyone to stop by and check out all of our vendors.” “This Festival is more than an annual event – it’s all about creating opportunities for our small businesses here at home,” said Teena Rasmussen, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. “In an effort to accommodate more shoppers this year, we’ve expanded the show to include additional vendors. We also opened the Festival for the first time to the general public on Friday with our Shoppers Preview. Not only will these efforts provide vendors with additional opportunities to promote their products to potential consumers, but it will also help them to connect with potential wholesale and retailer buyers.” “Prior to the 2014 Made in Maui County Festival, our chili pepper water was sold in approximately 28 stores on Maui and Lanai and I worked full-time at another business to make ends meet,” said Michelle Jones, Two Chicks In A Hammock co-owner. “After the exposure we received at last year’s Festival, our products are now carried in 128 stores statewide including one store in Canada and we picked up a distributor. I now work full-time on the business. The Made in Maui County Festival gave us the kick-start we needed to grow our company.” Companies like Matsumoto Studio were also able to showcase their notecards and stationery to new wholesale clients at the Festival. Their products are now sold in T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Home Goods. “The Made in Maui County Festival was not only an absolute success in direct sales and revenue for the day, it was also a fantastic opportunity to bring more brand awareness for our products which allowed us to connect with new and existing customers, and helped us establish further credibility that we are truly a made in Hawaii product,” said Shaun Bayles, co-owner of Chic Naturals. While the business side of the event is one that Festival organizers are taking seriously, the general public can expect some serious shopping with a wide variety of products offered for sale. The Shoppers Preview on Friday, November 6th, from 2 pm to 6 pm will give shoppers a one-day head start. At37

tendees will also enjoy the Festival’s opening ceremonies and VIP reception. Only 500 tickets will be sold to the general public for Friday’s event. Tickets are $35 per person and are available at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center Box Office or (808) 242-SHOW (7469) or MauiArts.org. On Saturday, November 7th, the Made in Maui County Festival will be open from 8 am to 4:30 pm. Public admission is $5 (at the gate), children 12 and under are free. Saturday’s festivities will include demonstrations, a fashion show, food trucks, and prize drawings. The first 2,000 attendees will receive a free Festival tote bag. “The 2014 event reaffirmed what we already knew, that there is a tremendous demand for made in Hawaii products produced by Maui County businesses,” said Pamela Tumpap, President of the Maui Chamber of Commerce. “Those who attend this year’s event are in for a real treat with the opportunity to shop for a myriad of products produced by talented entrepreneurs. Best of all, you’ll be helping to grow these businesses while investing in our islands’ economy.” Vendors who will be participating in the 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival this November are: 808 Clothing 808 Shells Aloha Botanicals Maui Aloha Letterpress Aloha Spiced Cacao ‘Alohi Images Maui Amata Jewelry Studio Ark Ceramics Art by Loyd B Raw Bar Barking Deer Farm BDC Designs Chic Naturals Christina DeHoff Fine Art Cool Blue Maui Cupcake Ladies Catering Co. Helping our local businesses succeed long-term will ultimately benefit our community and economy.” Among the early shoppers, were residents like Hachi from Kula. “This is the second year I’ve attended this event and I found so many wonderful things. There were many different products at this year’s Festival, a lot of which I’ve never seen before. That’s what made this Festival so exciting to see all these made on Maui products and to celebrate the abundance of talent here at home.” “There were some very unique items here that you don’t see at crafts shows and other places on the island,” said Maui resident Denah Burnham. “I was very excited to do some early Christmas shopping.” I love Maui County’s products” said first-time Festival goer and part-time Maui resident Liana Ramos. “I’ve bought so much art and jewelry. I love all the colors. It’s just my vibe.” Shalea Ellis, buyer for Down to Earth in Kahului found some great items that she wants to carry in her Kahului store that had clean ingredients. Vendors were also appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of the event. “We traveled from Molokai so it was a really big deal to participate in the Made in Maui County Festival, but this event is definitely worth coming for,” said Jamie Ronzello, owner of Barking Deer Farm. “It’s great to see so many people supporting Maui County businesses and the connections we’ve made with new wholesalers and retail customers from the mainland and Hawaii will go a long way in helping our business succeed.” “As a first-time vendor we didn’t know quite what to expect, but we were really impressed with the support that we got by the Festival folks helping us get prepared for this major products show,” said Tami Cadwell, owner of Hula Cookies. “We absolutely love this event and are excited with the amount of contacts we’ve made with big retailers.” “This is our first big products show and I think it’s so awesome to see all this support for made in Maui County products,” said Sui Joao, owner of SuiKeala Jewelry from Molokai. “This event provided a great way to spread awareness of what we’re doing. Yesterday, we had a bunch of wholesalers interested in our products and this event has helped us 100% in helping to grow our business.” “This is our first Festival-ever and the response to our beef jerky chips has been incredible,” said Blaine Apo, owner of Maui Crisps who sold out of their product by 1 pm on Saturday. “We made a lot of wholesale buyer contacts and were able to get valuable feedback from consumers which will help us to expand our product line.”

Testimonials “I thought the Made in Maui County event was one of Maui’s most significant events, ever! It showcased so many great start-up businesses, as well as long standing ones.” – Becky Speere, Dining Editor of Maui No Ka ‘Oi Magazine “Even better than last year!” – Laura Stimac “So fun! 75% of Christmas shopping pau!” – Elizabeth Tomoso “Please keep doing this event! It is a great opportunities for little companies to get exposure at a very low cost. Going to Oahu for the Made in Hawaii is extremely costly. The other great thing about this event is the diversity of products, there isn’t too much competition between vendors and everyone can make money. Some events we’ve been to have way too much of the same products which is not good for the clients and businesses. At MIMCF there is something for everyone. Keep up the good work! We love MIMCF.” – Te Hotu Mana Creations “This is such an awesome event! My sales the first day were triple last year and my sales on the second day were more than double last year. I got some wholesale purchasers and following up on other leads. A really great chance to get exposure for my rural based business and brick and mortar shop in Hana. I am also receiving more views on Etsy and Instagram. Thank you Made in Maui!” – Liquid Sunshine Jewelry “I felt it was very well organized & supported by the Made in Maui organization! The event itself went smoothly and we had great attendance! I appreciated the effort to bring in quality buyers on Friday and letting regular buyers in on Friday as well. I felt the hours on Fri & Sat were perfect! Thank you all! See you in 2016!” – B Raw Bar “This year’s event was amazing, the weather cooperated and it helped to fully showcase all of the hard work that you guys put into it with the huge turnout. I really loved it and the food selection was awesome too. Overall we just love this event and would love to get another shot at it.” – Na Koa Brand

“What a great event! I had a blast meeting and talking with people from all over the world. Although my direct sales were down from last year I did get more wholesale interest and am ready to start filling wholesale orders for the Christmas season.” – TikiRob “The festival was VERY well organized. Excellent job marketing! Overall though a very positive event for my company and I am very thankful to have been chosen to participate! Mahalo!” – Nahele Designs “I am so very impressed with all of you folks that worked so hard to pull off this show so successfully. I have done quite a few different shows, but this one was so organized and so well put together – I am totally impressed. You all made me feel so welcome. I really appreciate that! When you have so many people, vendors, promoters, etc. it can get pretty hectic, but it was all so smooth down to the gang directing the cars for loading and unloading. Thank you so much!” – Maui Dog Wear “I am very happy with this event overall. I believe that the people running the event are professional, organized, courteous, and helpful. My booth assistant cancelled on me Saturday, and I was stuck running the booth on my own. Teena Rasmussen noticed this and helped me get some water, food, and a stand-in if I needed to run to the bathroom. I can’t thank her enough for everything she did for me on that busy Saturday… In addition, the event was a great success for my business, and it has become one of my largest events of the year. I would sign up for next year right now if I could. Please continue to organize this event. You are doing a fantastic job.” – 808 Shells “Adding the consumers buying day on Friday along with the retailers helped to bump up our numbers over last year by 20%. Those willing to pay $35 to get in are definitely people willing to spend money at the show to get first crack at what vendors have to offer.” – exfolicare “As always the County and all of their partnerships made this event amazing and possible for Molokai vendors to participate. It was great to have a food truck on site for vendors to utilize on Friday morning/afternoon. Thanks for everything and look forward to next year!” – Barking Deer Farm

“Great event with a lot of exposure for small local businesses who want to expand themselves. Keep up the hard work and we look forward to what next MIMCF has to offer. Mahalo nui.” – BDC Designs “…I have been developing my body care line of which I launched at the MMCF; it was a huge step forward in my business! The response I got to my entire line was so exciting and inspiring as I had good sales, got a lot of great compliments on my products... I had 14 different businesses approach me and interested in the possibility of carrying my products in their stores. The total response I got is very motivating and inspiring to move forward knowing that I have something that is unique and special that people like and want. I have been working to bring my business up to the next level – doing the MIMCF was the perfect opportunity to show the public and businesses what I love to do. It is the biggest thing that I have ever done for my business and I appreciate the opportunity that the Festival gave me to showcase my business and my products. Thank you!” – Goddess Rising Perfumes “The main thing that stood out to us last year and stands out equally this year, is the exceptional media coverage of the event! Being a participant in the MIMCF, we notice things a little different than the public. We started noticing things popping up about the 2015 MIMCF in April/ May and the wonderful thing about it, is that this coverage seems to build slowly with more and more momentum and information coming out about it over the course of the year. Then, the week prior to the event it seems to just explode and no matter what form of media you turn on or open, there is something about the Festival in it. A week before this year it seemed like every time I turned on the radio, there it was. Turned on the TV, there it was. Opened a newspaper, there it was. Linn and Casey should be commended for the outstanding job they do bringing the crowd out because it doesn’t matter how good our products are, if there aren’t people there to sell to, no sales will be made. Thank you to you all for your efforts and for putting on a firstclass event.” – Chic Naturals “This was a great event for the local companies to showcase their products. We will inform new and upcoming businesses about the Festival. We would like to be accepted to come back in the years to come.” – Maui Crisps

51

“MIMCF is such a professionally produced show! We have juried into shows for 25+ years in 10 states, having done several hundred shows. We have worked with volunteer as well as professional promoters and have juried into some of the country’s top shows. This is the BEST organized show we have ever done. There was incredible coordination and teamwork between the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, the Maui Chamber of Commerce, the Maui County Business Resource Center, Linn and Casey Nishikawa and undoubtedly many others. We can only imagine the hours dedicated to MIMCF. Everyone was great to work with. MIMCF is such a positive promotion of Maui businesses. Our business has experienced positive growth with new wholesale accounts established at MIMCF who have already reordered.” – Lori C. Unfus “The Made in Maui County Festival was a spectacular showcase and I want to congratulate Maui County on the vision and determination to give birth to this wonderful event … I am very honored to be a part of it.” – Diane Haynes Woodburn Publisher, Maui No Ka `Oi Magazine
