In February 2008, the construction of MIM’s building began in north Phoenix. Designed by award-winning architect Rich Varda in collaboration with RSP Architects, MIM’s building harmonizes with its natural setting, using materials, colors, and forms that evoke the desert’s landscape. In addition to the galleries, the 200,000-square-foot space houses collections storage, administrative offices, a photography studio, a conservation lab, the 300-seat MIM Music Theater, and private event rooms. Phoenix was selected because of the city’s strong tourism, growing and increasingly diverse population, and proximity to top national and international attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.

The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) enriches our world by collecting, preserving, and making accessible an astonishing variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. MIM offers guests a welcoming and fun experience, incomparable interactive technology, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances. MIM fosters appreciation of the world’s diverse cultures by showing how we innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the language of the soul.

The Music Matters campaign helps expand educational programs while allowing MIM to innovate and develop new ones for all ages. Learn more on page 16.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM Friends and Supporters, We are thrilled to bring you this edition of Quarter Notes as we mark a new milestone in our history, MIM’s 10th anniversary. Throughout the year, exciting programs and activities will be offered for all audiences to enjoy, beginning with Experience Ireland in March and continuing with Celebration Saturdays each week leading up to special anniversary weekend festivities April 24–26. This year, the MIM Music Theater is presenting artists at the pinnacle of their craft through the Global Masters Concert Series. These unique performances explore what music means in the world and how it remains a universal language that sustains the human spirit. At the core of our work, we are focused on preserving music for future generations so they too can experience music’s lifelong impact. As part of this effort, earlier this year we launched Music Matters, a $10 million fundraising campaign that will sustain our current programs while expanding educational offerings that provide a dynamic, hands-on, transformational experience from early childhood to senior. One of our youngest guests, who recently visited MIM on a field trip with Sahuaro Ranch Elementary School, captured the essence of what music means to so many: “Music is food for the soul. No matter where you are in the world, music will always be there.” As we move from a young to mature organization in the next decade, Music Matters will be a bridge to MIM’s future. The work we will do together means our educational programs, inspiring performances, unique cultural events, and the exciting musical content in our galleries will have an even greater impact on more lives in the years to come. We hope you enjoy this look back at some of our favorite moments over the years (page 20), the positive changes to our galleries and collection (page 23), special exhibitions elevated through important partnerships (page 4), and much more. INTEGRATING WORLD MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM MIM offers Smithsonian Folkways World Music Pedagogy course This summer, MIM is excited to welcome music educators to explore how to integrate world music within their classrooms through the Smithsonian Folkways World Music Pedagogy certificate course. Offered June 15–19, it is the only course in the program being offered in the Southwest and will delve into the methodology and approach behind teaching about world music. While traditional music education often follows a Eurocentric model, exposure to world music at school offers many benefits, including greater inclusiveness in classrooms, enhanced cultural understanding, and improved creative and artistic literacy. Through participatory workshops featuring movement and dance experiences, songs, instrumental music, and contextualized components, educators will engage in world music study and discover a range of global music styles including African American gospel, West African and Japanese drumming, and more.

MIM educators, artists, and experienced teachers will share recordings and curricular materials Course participants will learn how to bring world music to their from the Smithsonian classrooms through workshops, gallery tours, and more. Folkways archives, lead small group sessions, and guide participants through MIM’s vibrant galleries. Activities and lessons during the course will be tailored to apply at various levels, including classes for youth in grades K–12 as well as adults in university and community settings.

“I hope educators leave this course with a sense of familiarity and comfort that enables them to utilize diverse musical representations in their classrooms,” says Katherine Palmer, DMA, MIM’s curator of education. “By giving students access to music from around the world, I think we can help build a more empathetic community. We can open ears and minds to alternate soundscapes that promote musical diversity and inclusivity.” The early bird registration deadline is May 1, followed by the regular registration deadline on June 10. A LOOK BACK AT MIM’S SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS Sharing unique musical stories from around the world MIM’s special exhibitions explore musical stories reflecting humanity’s enduring creativity. From the fine artistry of American inlaid guitars to the legendary violins of Antonio Stradivari and other Cremonese masters, musical and archaeological treasures from ancient China, and the dramatic and lively masquerade traditions of Central Africa, the exhibitions share a breadth of fascinating themes and are on display exclusively at MIM. 4

Since 2010, MIM has established meaningful partnerships with international institutions, museum professionals, and collectors that help shape each remarkable exhibition on display in the Target Gallery. Such relationships have provided access to one-ofa-kind collections and allowed MIM to bring instruments and artifacts to Phoenix as a part of exhibitions that have never been seen in the United States.

As exhibitions end, their stories often live on in the galleries. Guests can enjoy highlights from MIM’s exhibition Dragons and Vines: Inlaid Guitar Masterpieces at a Pearl Works display in the United States / Canada Gallery. Featuring four instruments including the PRS “Dragon 2002” electric guitar and Martin D-50 Deluxe acoustic, the exhibit showcases the innovation and remarkable craftsmanship of dedicated inlay artists and luthiers. partnership with the Museo del Violino in Cremona, Italy, inspired the creation of the Violin Makers of Cremona display in the Europe Gallery. Set up as a workshop, the exhibit explores the craftsmanship behind some of the world’s finest stringed instruments and the history of the birthplace of the violin. We look forward to continuing to present rich musical stories through special exhibitions. These original and compelling narratives are testaments to the awe-inspiring artistry of peoples from every corner of the globe. ▪

THE GROWTH OF MIM’S MUSIC THEATER Sharing the world’s music on stage and in the community Since opening in 2010, MIM’s Music Theater has grown from a lineup of 60 concerts annually to nearly 300. The countries and genres represented have expanded as well to showcase the world’s instruments, the people who play them, and the musical language we share. Today, the theater presents musicians from nearly 30 different countries each year, encompassing genres from jazz to rock, global music, classical, blues, and more. “The human spirit will find ways to make music, whether it’s with a couple of sticks that are knocked together or a computer. The theater is an opportunity to bring that music from around the world to life in the 14

hands of artists, and that’s an extraordinary thing,” says Lowell Pickett, the MIM Music Theater’s artist director. Philanthropic support from Producer’s Circle members allows the MIM Music Theater to present an eclectic lineup of artists from around the world. Over 10 years, the MIM Music Theater has featured a diverse range of influential performers, virtuosic musicians, and emerging artists. Many have praised the venue’s superb acoustics, state-of-the-art technology, and hospitable theater team, and continue performing year after year. Grammynominated jazz-fusion group Special EFX has performed twice since 2017 and will take

the stage again on May 1 at 7 and 9 p.m. to present their recent album, All-Stars. “The acoustics of the MIM Music Theater are wonderful. I think it’s one of the best rooms acoustically to play. Especially for the kind of music we do, which ranges from a soft whisper to getting pretty loud, it’s really cool for us,” says composer, arranger, and longtime Special EFX leader Chieli Minucci. Local singer-songwriter Khani Cole has also performed at the MIM Music Theater multiple times with seven concerts since 2013, most recently in February to share eclectic interpretations of Neil Young classics. Called “the voice of Phoenix!” by Grammywinning jazz guitarist George Benson, Cole

Beyond performing in the MIM Music Theater, several artists have also supported MIM’s educational programs. The Artist Residency Program, which gives students

at Signature Event weekends, including Ugandan musician Kinobe at the opening weekend of MIM’s exhibition Congo Masks and Music and French jazz band Paris Chansons at Experience France. The MIM Music Theater is grateful to local music venues and organizations it has partnered with that cultivate community engagement, including the Phoenix Symphony on classical music concerts, Arizona Musicfest to showcase young classical talent, and Arizona State University on concerts featuring music students and faculty. The Witzlers have supported MIM since 2010, most recently contributing to the

What does it mean to you that MIM is celebrating its 10th anniversary?

We spoke with Suzy and Cap about their passion for music and what it means to be a part of MIM’s 10th anniversary. The Music Matters campaign helps further MIM’s mission while sustaining and expanding educational programming. Why do you think music education is important? Suzy: For me, MIM really emphasizes the amazing commonality that musical expression has around the world. I think experiencing that and being exposed to music through MIM’s educational programs can help build bridges among people. 22

Suzy: It’s a true reason to celebrate. I think the dedication of MIM’s team members, board, donors, and community have helped make it a real success story. We love introducing our friends to MIM, and every single visit to the museum expands my horizons of the world’s music.

Cap: MIM’s founder Bob Ulrich had a vision and brought it to fruition, and the world welcomed a missing piece when the museum opened. Through your support, what kind of impact do you hope to have on MIM and the community? Suzy: I love music because I think it has the ability to transport people. It’s a very special art form that’s universal throughout the world. I’m hoping the Music Matters campaign is a real success to bring MIM into a sustainable future so it can continue sharing the power of music with even more people. ▪

A LOOK INSIDE MIM’S EVER-CHANGING GALLERIES From the perspective of MIM’s chief curator While MIM’s galleries have transformed over the past 10 years, their original vision and commitment to excellence continue. Since its inception, MIM has aspired to be the “best museum ever”—a place that offers inspiring, interesting, entertaining, and fun experiences for everyone to enjoy regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, background, education, or income level. Manuel Jordán, MIM’s deputy director and chief curator, shares how the galleries have evolved and his vision for the future. As told by Jordán: In the beginning, we collaborated with ethnomusicologists, curators, and institutions, such as the Africa Museum in Tervuren, Belgium; the Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels, Belgium; and Cité de la Musique in Paris, France. Everything from exhibit design to gallery layout and the collection were thought through. It’s an incredible success story because we went from an idea to the creation of a museum in just five years.

The past few years have been a journey of finding the finest global instruments that are most representative of their associated cultures. Our curators and their national and international field work allow us to be in direct contact with living musicians, traditions, and communities that are grounded culturally by music. Our goal remains that when someone from any country stands in front of the exhibit representing their heritage, they feel a sense of pride. MIM’s galleries are constantly evolving; you can visit over and over and always find new and exciting instruments and stories. MIM continues to excel as a cultural institution because of the clarity of its mission, the certainty of its founding principles, and the commitment of its team in sustaining the very best museum standards for our guests. ▪ Recently acquired Baroque harpsichord in MIM’s Europe Gallery

VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Inaugural VTMs look back on 10 years at MIM As MIM reflects on its 10th anniversary, we deeply thank the volunteer team members (VTMs) who serve each year for their unwavering dedication and support of MIM’s mission. MIM’s VTMs touch all areas of the museum—from inspiring students on field trips to answering questions about the collection, making fun crafts at Signature Events, showing guests how to play the theremin in the Experience Gallery, and more. Among MIM’s current VTMs, 42 have volunteered since 2010, the museum’s opening year. “I can’t keep myself away from MIM. It is the most fascinating place, where I learn something new every visit. I can introduce children to music and musical instruments and share my lifelong love of music with them. I also can be of service to the community by giving tours to people with Alzheimer’s disease and other disabilities, helping them to enjoy the many facets of music and musical instruments,” says John Friedman, an inaugural VTM.

“I believe that through MIM we show that all over the world people positively relate to music and that people are all the same. I am proud to be a part of MIM’s 10th anniversary. Perhaps through music we can establish a more peaceful world.” —Jetta Melnick, MIM Volunteer Team Member Many inaugural VTMs have forged friendships through their volunteer work and share a deep passion for music and its transformative power on the community and world. They have also seen the museum evolve from its earliest stages through today. “I love being part of the MIM family,” says Linda Stephens, who has been a MIM Music Theater volunteer usher since April 2010. “Since I live so close to MIM, I am proud to say that I watched every stage of MIM being built, from breaking ground to its very first concert to growing to around 300 concerts a year currently. That in itself is an amazing experience.” We are grateful to the VTMs who have shared their knowledge and enthusiasm over the past 10 years, significantly impacting guests’ visits and creating memories that last a lifetime. ▪
