MIM celebrates music as a sustaining human gift and enriches world culture by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting a wide variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. MIM also fosters appreciation of diverse cultures by showing that we all innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the universal language.

Message from the CHAIRMAN From the release of MIM’s first-ever catalog to the addition of popular new exhibits in the Artist Gallery, featuring artists such as Taylor Swift and Roy Orbison, to museum-wide celebrations of Bastille Day and Fiestas Patrias (Mexican national holidays culminating in Independence Day), 2012 was a banner year. The second full year of operations for MIM also saw the launch of the online store, visits from renowned artists such as Kristian Bush (half of international super duo Sugarland) and Taj Mahal, as well as the continuation of an expansion project, which, when completed in April 2013, added 126 new exhibits and 20 percent more content to MIM’s galleries. To each of you who contributed to MIM in 2012, whether through financial support or the gift of your time and talents, thank you. I am delighted that the number of donors and volunteer team members who have chosen to invest in MIM continues to grow. Whether you are an individual donor to our Band of Donors or Circle of Friends programs; a volunteer team member; or the representative of a corporation, foundation, or government entity that has contributed to MIM, your support is essential to the sustainability of this museum. I am especially gratified by the way that our donors and volunteer team members continue to serve as our most passionate ambassadors. Word of mouth has proven to be our most powerful tool in spreading the news about MIM, and I hope all of you will continue to champion the museum with friends, family, and others. Winning Ways In 2012, MIM solidified its role as the premier place for people to experience and appreciate the world through music. Education at MIM The Education Department at MIM seeks to inspire guests of all ages to engage with our collection and exhibitions. In 2012, MIM welcomed over 27,000 schoolchildren on field trips and presented 217 different public programs that engaged 14,157 guests. Continuing programs included: • Museum Encounters

A Financial Perspective We extend our thanks to you, our valued donors and volunteer team members, for playing such an important role in the phenomenal early success of the museum. MIM’s economic model continues to develop positively in the areas of community support, earned income growth, and operating efficiency. Following the successful Founder’s Campaign in 2011, sponsorship support expanded in 2012, along with the growth of our Circle of Friends program. A 10 percent investment return in 2012 raised MIM’s endowment to $10.5 million. Donors have chosen long-term support of MIM and its programs through endowment contributions, and that growth has been maximized by keeping the endowment funds invested without any distribution in 2012. Support for education programs from individual donors and grants has also increased. In 2012, earned revenue increased to 38 percent of MIM’s operating budget based on strong results from retail operations, the Music Theater, café services, and private-use rentals. Each of these earnedrevenue sources is expected to continue to grow in the future, along with admission revenue. Operating efficiency optimization continued throughout 2012, with expense reductions of 11 percent compared to 2011. This trend is expected to continue into 2013, with the completion of the Master Plan Implementation, which brought dramatic changes to existing exhibits, new and exciting displays and objects to the museum, and compelling audiovisual content. The internal processes and technology systems now in place are solidly positioned to support future program growth in the museum and Music Theater. In addition, a building maintenance reserve fund of $600,000 was established in 2012, with plans to continue this investment each year as resources are available to further position MIM for the future. Through out-of-the-box thinking, experimentation, adaptability, and the support and assistance of the core of loyal donors and friends to which you belong, we can ensure that MIM will exist as a resource for future generations. An international expert on African art, Marc Felix has written more than twenty books and published dozens of articles. One of his greatest accomplishments is masterminding MIM with the museum’s founder Bob Ulrich. A partner in MIM’s genesis, Marc remains surprised by what he and Bob created. “Even in my wildest dreams, it would never have been like this,” he says. From the building (which he calls “perfect”) to the work environment (where he says people can “make their dream come true”), MIM has written another incredible chapter in Marc’s fascinating life.

“We visited MIM for the first time last summer,” says Dennis Propp, a Chicago businessman. The museum struck a chord with Dennis, whose father, Leslie Propp, was in the musical-instrument business. “He grew up poor and never finished college,” Dennis says of his dad, who went on to become president and CEO of Norlin Music, Inc., and later, president of the American Music Conference, an organization that supports music education in schools. By supporting MIM, Dennis both honors his father and carries on Leslie’s work on behalf of music education.

An event planner in Boston, Carolyn Perlow has been to MIM many times, yet “each time it’s a new experience. It’s very exciting to see how the museum is evolving.” Carolyn’s visits got her thinking about the impact music has made on her family, particularly on two great-nephews who are musicians. Wanting to open similar doors for other children, Carolyn joined MIM’s Band of Donors. “Giving young people the opportunity to be exposed to the cultural arts is a gift,” she says. “So doing anything we can to expose and enrich their lives is important.”

Andrea Noziglia
A junior at Arizona State University majoring in conservation biology and minoring in Spanish and music, Andrea Noziglia feeds her eclectic tastes by volunteering as an usher in the MIM Music Theater. She credits the museum for improving her professional and social skills and believes more young people should follow her lead. “Young people need to appreciate music of different time periods, cultures, and genres, which is what MIM is all about,� she says.
