The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) enriches the world community by collecting, preserving, and making accessible high-quality musical instruments, images, and music from every country in the world. We celebrate our world’s diverse musical cultures and foster global understanding by offering our guests an incomparable interactive experience, a welcome and fun environment, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances.

05 2007 September Robert J. Ulrich conceives a vision for MIM.
May MIM acquires its first instrument, an African ivory trumpet, which is a gift of Marc Leo Felix.
September MIM establishes temporary offices at Target Financial Services in Tempe, AZ.

2006 December MIM is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization and the Board of Directors is formed.
March 1 Billie (Bill) R. DeWalt, PhD, starts as MIM’s founding president and director. October Land is purchased for MIM at the intersection of Mayo and Tatum Boulevards in north Phoenix.

From the day that MIM founder Robert J. Ulrich was inspired to build a world-class musical instrument museum to date, MIM has maintained steadfast goals of quality and innovation. With each milestone, MIM will continue to strive for excellence, allowing many more guests to encounter a museum dedicated to presenting worldwide musical connections.
2009 December 11 MIM team members move into offices at the newly finished building.
April 18 MIM makes its first purchase of a major instrument collection from the Claremont University Consortium’s Kenneth G. Fiske Museum at The Claremont Colleges in California.
May 15 R. Carlos Nakai performs at MIM in the museum’s first sell-out concert. April 24 MIM opens to the public.
April 23 k.d. lang performs at MIM’s opening gala event.
June 7 MIM wins Museum Association of Arizona’s “Best Interpretation of a Theme Award.”
April 25 Laurie Lewis performs in the MIM Music Theater— the theater’s first official public performance.

November 26 World-famous violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jeremy Denk record the CD French Impressions in the MIM Music Theater. November MIM presents its first traveling exhibit, American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music.
March 10 MIM wins the Arts in Education Council for Scottsdale Schools’ “Outstanding Fine Arts Civic Organization Award.”
March 26 2,110 guests visit MIM, making this day the highest single attendance day in 2011.

September 12 New K–2 educational tours begin for the 2011–2012 season. September 24 The Power of Music: Photographic Portraits of Americans and Their Musical Instruments, 1860–1915 traveling exhibit opens at MIM.
May 1 A screening of Listen to the World, the Ovation TV documentary featuring MIM, is shown at the museum.
November 3 MIM wins “Finest Museum” Award from Frontdoors News Network.
August 6 The newly expanded Artist Gallery opens, showcasing even more of the world’s most recognizable performers, including Elvis Presley.
December 31 MIM completes its Founders Campaign. More than 325 people are acknowledged as founding benefactors of the museum by having their names permanently engraved onto hand-rubbed bronze panels on MIM's Founders Wall.
April 29 MIM celebrates its first anniversary with a performance by the Valley’s very own superstar Jordin Sparks.

Campaign for MIM 2006–2011
Message from the President When our founder Bob Ulrich conceived the vision for the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), his aspiration was to build a guest-friendly, world-class museum that was global in scope. MIM would celebrate music as a universal language and musical instruments as amplifiers of human emotion. There was no template to guide the creation of such a unique institution. Nonetheless, the passion and vision of Bob and an incredibly talented team, including the Board of Directors and President’s Cabinet, museum advisors, and consultants from across the globe, drove the rigorous process that resulted in a museum built in record time. From conception to opening in April 2010, MIM took less than five years. Achieving all of this certainly would not have been possible without Bob Ulrich, whose generous philanthropy, energy, passion, and hands-on guidance ensured that every aspect of MIM was of the highest quality. But these accomplishments also would not have been possible without the many individuals who joined Bob as MIM Founders and donors, making substantial gifts to demonstrate their support of the museum as a gift to the region, the nation, and the world—a destination worthy of being sustained for generations to come. Two years after opening, the results of those gifts are here for all to see and hear: a stunning building that has garnered numerous architectural awards, nationally and internationally acclaimed artists regularly performing in the superb theater, accolades in the press worldwide, an exquisite collection of more than fifteen thousand instruments and other objects from nearly every country in the world, and the delight on the faces of our guests and the thousands of children who enjoy school group tours. MIM has established a great foundation and a strong commitment to future sustainability. I am so grateful for all gifts that have contributed to our success. I am especially indebted to the more than three hundred individuals, foundations, and corporations who made major gifts to the Campaign for MIM by the end of 2011. We are extremely pleased to honor and recognize donors at the $5,000+ levels as Founders in perpetuity on the beautifully engraved bronze wall at MIM’s entry. MIM could not have had a more successful two years since its opening. We hope we can continue to rely on the support and generosity of our donors to help us sustain that excitement and success long into the future. My heartfelt thanks to our Founders and to all donors, who have helped to make MIM “the most extraordinary museum you’ll ever hear.”

Building the Museum
MIM’s interior includes Venetian plaster walls, Italian porcelain floor tile, and stainless steel balcony railings; each is designed to allude to the variety and rhythms of musical composition.
Blending the hues of the Southwest with a sleek, modern design, the Musical Instrument Museum rivals the most innovative structures of the world. It is located on a twenty-acre site in north Phoenix and boasts eighty thousand square feet of exhibition space. Built by Ryan Companies of Phoenix and Minneapolis, the building utilizes exquisite materials and was constructed by expert craftspeople from a wide variety of building trades. Moe Nozari
Moe Nozariʼs reasons for giving to MIM were highly personal. Essentially, his broad support can be boiled down to the esteem he feels for two men: his late brother Parviz and MIM founder Bob Ulrich. Nozari, a retired executive vice president of 3M, has donated instruments to MIM in honor of Parviz, purchased instruments for MIMʼs collection, and given money to enhance the Iran exhibit, since Iran is the country of his birth.

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF EXTERNAL RELATIONS Looking back over the past year, it is hard to imagine that 2011 marked just the first full year of operation for the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM). For those of us who have been a part of this unique and incredible project since before MIM’s April 2010 opening, it is especially gratifying to reflect upon how quickly and positively the museum has been received by the Phoenix—and world—community. MIM’s youngest volunteer, Cole started at MIM a week after turning seventeen. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, as well as some piano. “MIM is one of a kind and the fact that we have it in Phoenix is awesome,” he says. “I know the experience I’m getting here will benefit me as I continue my studies in music.”
