LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear MIM friends and supporters, In this Annual Report edition of Quarter Notes, we are pleased to highlight some of the many ways that your support helps us continue to share musical experiences with guests from around the world.

In 2025, we welcomed 350,000 guests to the museum, including a record-breaking 100,000 guests who attended a concert at the MIM Music Theater. We are honored that you chose to spend time with us and inspired by your passion for the music and cultures of the world.

Your support fuels our commitment to continually revitalize our galleries with historic acquisitions, such as jazz legend Duke Ellington’s personal piano, and new stories, such as the A. Laubin exhibit in the United States / Canada Gallery exhibit, which represents an exceptional family of American oboe makers.

As always, we are very grateful to our phenomenal volunteer team members, who bring these stories and our collection to life for our guests. Our VTMs go above and beyond to ensure that each and every guest enjoys a warm, welcoming experience at MIM. In this issue of Quarter Notes, you will read about some of the many ways they help our guests make unforgettable memories, such as playing instruments with guests in the Experience Gallery and sharing the science of music with students on STEM field trips.

VOLUNTEER TEAM MEMBERS HAVE FUN WITH GUESTS IN THE EXPERIENCE GALLERY Making music and memories together at MIM In MIM’s Experience Gallery, guests of all ages enjoy playing instruments from around the world. Experience Gallery volunteer team members (VTMs) also have fun making music and memories with neighbors from the community and travelers from around the United States and beyond.

These additions expanded the gallery’s collection, which also includes marimbas, harps, banjos, and Little Martin guitars.

“Volunteering in the Experience Gallery is a great opportunity to learn more about the specific instruments in the room and to enjoy interacting with guests from all over,” says Experience Gallery VTM Patrina Gay. “It’s a delight to see a guest’s face light up when you tell them they can play the instruments in the room and dance with them when the nickelodeon is playing.”

“Many guests come into the Experience Gallery to explore their musical inclinations, but other guests have been playing for years and are not shy about sharing their gift,” Patrina says. “Some become lost in their own world of music when they play, and it makes the impromptu performance all the more special.”

The Experience Gallery was redesigned and refreshed with new instruments in 2025, including a digital piano, two conga drums, a vibedrum, a hueheutl drum, an ngoma kettledrum, and a tubulum that was made

by Brian Cummings, MIM’s lead preparator.

“It’s the sound of happiness,” he says. ▪

Sometimes VTMs demonstrate how to play the instruments to guests—and sometimes guests do the demonstrating.

STUNNING INSTRUMENTS IN THE MAGICAL FLUTE: BEAUTY, ENCHANTMENT, AND POWER Exquisite flutes that exemplify the theme of beauty in MIM’s special exhibition Across time and around the world, flute makers have fashioned beautiful instruments that visually reflect their beguiling sounds.

These are just a few examples of the uniquely stunning flutes in MIM’s special exhibition The Magical Flute: Beauty, Enchantment, and Power.

Flute London, England, c. 1830 Ivory, gold, silver, brass, steel Private Collection This ornately decorated Rudall & Rose ivory flute is embellished with carved floral motifs. The gold keys feature fleurs-de-lis and seashell-shaped cups, and the adornment is capped by a gold crown with a leaflike design on the top of the head joint.

Bamboo, natural pigment MIM Collection Made by the Wayana people of Suriname, kiyapok were traditionally played in pairs, sometimes with two connected, symmetrically designed flutes made from one long piece of bamboo. This rare example is intricately painted with abstract patterns and symbols that were likely significant to local shamanic spirituality.

The tuning and arrangement of its pipes embody the ideals of cosmic harmony central to Chinese court music and state ceremonies. ▪ 5

A. LAUBIN EXHIBIT HONORS EXCEPTIONAL AMERICAN OBOE MAKERS Exhibit gives guests an insider’s view of the Laubin family workshop Alfred Laubin and his son Paul crafted some of the world’s highest-quality oboes. Thanks to the generous gift of authentic tools and other items from the Laubin family, the new A. Laubin exhibit in MIM’s United States / Canada Gallery offers guests a look at the Laubins’ specialized workshop and three completed Laubin instruments—two oboes and an English horn, which is a tenor oboe.

The oboe is a marvel of engineering, but it is a sensitive instrument. Professional oboist Alfred Laubin resolved to create an oboe of superior stability and sound and made his first oboe in 1931, melting down some of his wife’s silverware to make the keys. Paul Laubin shared his father’s passion for the instrument and began making oboes by the 1950s.

Over the next decades, the Laubins made careful improvements to their design and instrument-making process. Handcrafted Laubin oboes were precisely intonated, 6

responsive to playing dynamics, and more reliable than mass-produced oboes.

The Laubins made no compromises in their pursuit of crafting the highest-quality instruments, and their oboes quickly became in demand among serious oboists.

“People have compared playing a Laubin oboe to playing a Stradivarius violin,” says Rich Walter, curator for United States / Canada.

The A. Laubin exhibit offers an intimate view of the workshop where the Laubins made their remarkable instruments. Guests can see the Laubins’ workbench and lathe and the special duplicating machine they developed to help them make their incredibly precise oboes.

“Oboe and English horn players really revere the instruments that came out of that shop, and we are honored to represent the Laubins’ legacy at MIM,” Walter says. ▪

DUKE ELLINGTON’S PERSONAL PIANO JOINS MIM’S COLLECTION An important instrument from the jazz legend’s career finds a home at MIM In fall 2025, curator for United States / Canada Rich Walter acquired an outstanding object for MIM’s collection of jazz instruments: jazz legend Duke Ellington’s personal piano.

Ellington purchased the piano, a white Kramer baby grand (below right), in the late 1920s during the Harlem Renaissance, when his fame was growing and his orchestra performed at high-profile New York ballrooms such as the Cotton Club. He kept the piano in his home and composed some of his greatest hits on it. “Mood Indigo,” “Sophisticated Lady,” and “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” are among the enduring classics from that period.

“This is the piano from the old homestead where my mother, father, and whole family were,” Ellington said in 1957 on the television show Person to Person. “A lot of exciting things have come out of here, some of my most satisfying work.”

“We are ecstatic that MIM is now the home for Duke Ellington’s piano,” Walter says. “It is hugely significant as the instrument he played when he was establishing an international legacy as one of the most impactful composers, bandleaders, and musical figures of the 20th century.”

In 2025, MIM also acquired instruments played by guitarist Fred Guy and drummer Sonny Greer, longtime members of Ellington’s orchestra. These instruments and Ellington’s piano will soon be on display in the Jazz exhibit, where they will help tell one of the most profound stories in American music. ▪

STUDENTS DISCOVER THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC ON STEM FIELD TRIPS AT MIM New displays in the Collier STEM Gallery relate music to engineering and math Updates to the Dr. Donald W. Collier STEM Gallery are helping young learners explore the science of sound during MIM’s STEM: How Science Brings Music to Life field trip. New thematic displays expand on the ways that sound is deeply connected to engineering and math, reinforcing the lessons that museum guides share with students during STEM tours.

“On our STEM field trip, students learn that sound is vibration. Every instrument makes a unique sound, and every instrument includes elements that make its unique sound louder,” says Mike Silvers, curator of education.

In the STEM Gallery, the Machines of Music exhibit offers examples of how instruments use simple machines. The exhibit’s highlight, a Renner piano action model, demonstrates how a system of levers, springs, and counterbalances helps a hammer strike a string when a player presses a piano key. On the opposite wall, the Mathematical Melodies exhibit illustrates how dividing a length of

Young learners look at the Machines of Music display, which prominently features a Renner piano action model. string, pipe, or tubing into exact proportions produces distinct intervals. Instruments such as a set of sikura panpipes, a đàn bâù plucked zither, and MIM’s “visible organ” explain how the mathematical relationships between ratio and interval inform tuning systems used around the world.

Students also explore MIM’s Orientation Galleries and Geographic Galleries on the STEM tour, and every activity and example throughout the field trip emphasizes the lesson that sound is vibration. During a recent STEM field trip, 6th grade students used a hollow wooden box to amplify the volume of a music box and counted hollow, hard-bodied resonators on acoustic instruments in the Africa Gallery. They joined hands to close an electrical circuit and make noise with an energy stick, then they learned how amplifiers use circuits to make electric guitars more audible and explored electronic instruments in the United States / Canada Gallery.

“The field trip to the Musical Instrument Museum had a powerful impact on my students, both academically and personally,” says a 3rd grade teacher whose class recently went on the STEM tour. “It helped bring our learning about sound energy to life in a tangible and engaging way. Students were able to make real-world connections between our classroom discussions on vibrations, pitch, and volume and the instruments they saw and heard at the museum.” ▪ STEM program development is supported by The Donald W.
