MISSION STATEMENT MIM enriches our world by collecting, preserving, and making accessible an astonishing variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. MIM offers guests a welcoming and fun experience, incomparable interactive technology, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances. MIM fosters appreciation of the world’s diverse cultures by showing how we innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the language of the soul.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR | Dear Friends, The year 2015 was one of historic milestones and a number of firsts for the Musical Instrument Museum, all thanks to your generous support. I am delighted to share some of these big accomplishments with you, our longtime patrons, and also with those of you who are new to our organization.

EDUCATION From early childhood music-andmovement courses to educational programs designed for older children to professional development opportunities for educators, learners of all ages are offered exciting learning opportunities that combine arts education, social studies, and science—all through music and musical instruments.

Mini Music Makers

Early music experiences help shape children’s brains, creating the foundation for future learning. Our interactive Mini Music Makers classes provide wide educational value that includes rhythm (eye-hand coordination), sound, color, language development, and social interaction.

In our Junior Museum Guides program, students in grades 6–12 train for four weeks to lead tours in MIM’s galleries. Participants not only learn about cultures from around the world but also how to lead active music-making sessions and assist with instrument crafting.

Music is a great stepping-stone in a child’s educational journey. And with more than 52,000 schoolchildren visiting annually, MIM supports thousands of breakthrough moments each year. MIM TURNS FIVE On April 24, 2010, MIM opened its doors as the world’s only global musical instrument museum. Five years later we commemorated this milestone with a weeklong celebration. Each weekday was inspired by one of the museum’s five Geographic Galleries and included gallery talks with a MIM curator, a live musical performance, and a themed menu in Café Allegro. On the weekend, the museum hosted Experience MIM: 5th Anniversary Celebration, bringing together some of our all-time favorite performers and activities.

WORLD’S FIRST COMPLETE 3-D MINIATURE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA UNVEILED

Almost everyone has heard an orchestra, but not everyone has attended a live orchestral performance. For that reason, MIM created a one-of-a-kind model that uses state-of-the-art technology to deliver a multisensory orchestral experience. To create the diminutive orchestra housed in the Europe Gallery, MIM enlisted the help of London-based musicians. The musicians visited my3Dtwin, a studio that specializes in 3-D-printed figurines. Each musician was photographed in a special 360-degree photo booth with cameras arranged to capture every angle of the musician and his or her instrument. The resulting photos were translated into a digital rendering that was then “printed” in plaster of paris as a 1/12 scale “twin” of the musician. At MIM, the figures sit atop an 84-inch monitor donated by NEC Display Solutions. The monitor lights up as audio of each instrument plays, highlighting the major sections of the orchestra. Over the course of four minutes, guests are taken on a journey around the orchestra, hearing audio excerpts from standard orchestral works. In this way, the display illustrates the number and variety of instruments, their character and sound, how they are held, how the orchestra is configured, and what the performers wear. The level of detail in the display is remarkable, and this innovative use of music and technology is a world-first accomplishment for MIM.

MIM MUSIC THEATER In addition to hosting performances by renowned artists, the MIM Music Theater introduces guests to emerging talents from around the world. Indeed, the MIM Music Theater brings the world’s music to Arizona. MYSTERY GUITAR MAN MAKES VIDEO AT MIM Brazilian-born YouTube sensation Joe Penna, a.k.a. Mystery Guitar Man, spent two days in August filming at MIM, where he played 87 instruments from approximately 30 countries. Penna is known for the videos he creates that incorporate a wide range of musical instruments. MIM challenged Penna to create a video using as many instruments from our collection as possible. The video has since racked up more than 800,000 views on YouTube and run as a commercial spot for MIM.

Danielle Shum, the seventeen-year-old founder of the Danielle Victoria Music Foundation (DVMF), started her 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal of enriching the lives of Arizona’s underprivileged students through music education. An accomplished classical pianist, Shum recognizes the impact music has had on her own life. “I’ve been touched by music personally, and I want to share that experience with other kids who maybe share the passion for music but are unable to afford it,” she says. Accordingly, when MIM debuted its summer camp “Around the World” last June, seven young campers enjoyed a week of dancing, singing, and playing musical instruments thanks to DVMF. Shum also took the opportunity to visit MIM’s summer camp several times to perform for the campers and share her love for music. She was so moved by the experience that she and her father Daniel decided to make an even bigger investment in MIM, which will soon enable hundreds of children from Title 1 schools to experience a field trip and artist residency at MIM. “The kids were a lot of fun to interact with,” Shum says. “Even if my foundation was able to help just those seven kids have that experience, I think that’s all that really matters. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
