MIM enriches the world by collecting, preserving, and making accessible a wide variety of musical instruments and performance videos from every country in the world. We offer our guests a welcoming and fun experience, incomparable interactive technology, dynamic programming, and exceptional musical performances. MIM also fosters appreciation of diverse cultures around the globe by showing that we all innovate, adapt, and learn from each other to create music—the language of the soul.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

“The community is buzzing about MIM.” The year 2013 will go down as a very significant one in MIM history. It brought a visit from the remarkable Orquesta de Instrumentos Reciclados, or “Recycled Orchestra,” from Paraguay. These inspiring young musicians who play instruments crafted from recycled trash made their US debut at MIM. They celebrated the dedication of an exhibit honoring them in MIM’s Latin America Gallery and performed three sold-out concerts in the MIM Music Theater. They also participated in an artist residency program with students from Arizona School for the Arts.

In addition, the year brought the opening of Women Who Rock, the blockbuster traveling exhibition that drew guests to the museum from near and far. We were able to leverage excitement about this special programming with a related concert series and successful fundraising luncheon.

On top of this, the museum was singled out for several awards and distinctions, including being ranked the number one Phoenix attraction on TripAdvisor and the Reader’s Choice for Best Museum by Phoenix Magazine.

Thanks to accolades like these, the community is buzzing about MIM. Our Education Department has expanded its curricula and is serving more schoolchildren than ever before; our signature cultural events are drawing crowds; and more and more concerts are selling out. More importantly, museum attendance is strong and support from artists, sponsors, and the local community is the best it’s been since MIM opened its doors to the public for the first time in 2010.

As proud as we are of these accomplishments, we are equally excited about the exceptional support the museum is receiving from the growing group of donors and volunteer team members like you. MIM AROUND THE WORLD The Musical Instrument Museum is one of a kind: a venue that inspires people of all ages, a destination for experiencing the world’s music in an unparalleled setting, and a must-see for national and international tourists.

VIS ITOR S In 2013, MIM drew an increasingly diverse, global audience. More than 246,000 guests from some sixty-eight countries journeyed to the museum.

INTE RNATI ONAL PE R FORME R S Word is spreading that the MIM Music Theater is an incomparable venue for concertgoers and performers alike. And it’s no wonder, because the place continues to attract the highest-caliber artists from all corners of the world. In 2013, the MIM Music Theater hosted more than 190 concerts by artists from 21 different countries.

LOANS By displaying loaned objects, MIM has the chance to exhibit instruments and other items that could not otherwise be acquired. In 2013, MIM received international loans from Australia, Belgium, China, Israel, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and Spain.

CUR ATOR IAL FIE LD WOR K MIM’s curators search the world to source new acquisitions; secure instrument loans; visit historically important sites; engage with musicians and instrument makers; produce video and photo documentation; and develop a network of artists, scholars, and institutional contacts for future MIM collaborations. In 2013, our curatorial team went on research trips to Switzerland, Italy, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic, as well as to various spots around the United States.

EDUCATION MIM continues to serve thousands of K–12 students across Arizona. Our Education Department has expanded its curricula to include new subject areas and is continuing its commitment to local and regional schools. Through 199 educational programs and 22 district partnerships, MIM reached more than 30,000 students and teachers in 2013.

NEW “S TEM” AND E XPERIENCE AFRIC A TOURS New tour options allow educators to tailor MIM visits to their students’ interests and needs, whether it’s learning how music relates to science, math, engineering, and technology during a STEM tour or discovering how musical ideas that originated in Africa have influenced music in the Americas.

MIMKIDS: MINI MUSIC MAKERS & MUSICAL ADVENTURES SERIES In 2013, MIM debuted music-and-movement programs for kids aged zero to five, which introduce little ones to the wide and wonderful world of music-making. MIM also launched classes for children aged six to ten, which provide an overview of music from around the world.

FAMILY DAYS Special programming at MIM gave families a chance to enjoy full days at the museum, complete with hands-on activities and special music programs designed for the youngest family members.

J OHN LENNON E D U C ATI ONAL B U S PR O GR AM In September 2013, the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus rolled up to MIM. Guests toured this state-of-the-art studio-onwheels, which offers young people the chance to create music, video, and digital photography projects.

RECYCLED ORCHESTRA In August 2013, Paraguay’s Recycled Orchestra made its US debut at MIM. Members of this uplifting orchestra, who play instruments made from recycled trash, shared their music, their stories, and their passion during several events at the museum.

If our Paraguayan friends, whose lives are occupied daily with basic survival and safety concerns, go to such lengths and creative effort to preserve music-making, that says a lot to us about their cultural values!”

E XHIB IT In March 2013, eight innovative instruments went on display in MIM’s Latin America Gallery. Made with items such as coins and bottle caps, spoons, oil containers, and old x-ray film, these instruments prove that poverty doesn’t preclude a life rich with music.

3 S O LD - O UT CON CE R T S In just a few years, the innovation of visionary music teacher Favio Chávez and his group of talented students has led to a thriving music school and a youth orchestra that performs internationally. At MIM, the group performed three sold-out concerts.

AR IZONA S CH O OL FOR THE AR T S R E S ID EN C Y Confirming that music is a universal language, students from Arizona School for the Arts took part in a special program with the young musicians from Cateura, Paraguay. It included a trip to a recycling station, an instrumentmaking workshop, and joint concerts.

D O CUMENTARY The Recycled Orchestra has taken the world by storm. The group was the subject of the documentary Landfill Harmonic, a film that bears witness to the transformative power of music.

WOMEN WHO ROCK Starting in October, MIM was proud to present Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power, a groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the impact that women have had on popular music during the past century, using videos, photos, and displays of instruments, performance outfits, and historical artifacts to tell the story.

E XHIB ITI ON Women Who Rock traced several generations of female performers, songwriters, and instrumentalists who influenced American popular music. Featured artists included Billie Holiday, Carole King, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Loretta Lynn, Yoko Ono, Cher, Cyndi Lauper, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys, and many others.

Developed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, Women Who Rock was showcased in MIM’s Target Gallery from October 19, 2013, to April 20, 2014.

B ENE FIT LUN CHEON Women Who Rock kicked off with an exclusive benefit luncheon. Attendees included the “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Jackson, Martha Reeves of the Motown girl group Martha and the Vandellas, folk-blues singer Maria Muldaur, Genya Ravan (a.k.a. Goldie of the trailblazing, all-female band Goldie and the Gingerbreads), and even retired United States Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor. The event raised approximately $50,000 for MIM.

CON CE R T SE R IE S The MIM Music Theater presented a special series of concerts and interviews inspired by Women Who Rock. Some shows featured artists included in the exhibition, such as Wanda Jackson and Cherie Currie. Others showcased up-and-coming female performers.

More than 8,500 guests visited the Women Who Rock exhibition at MIM in the last ten weeks of 2013 alone.
