Music has the power to move us — literally! Guest conductor David Roberston leads a rhythmic program full of music created expressly for movement and dance. First up are two pieces by Chopin — a Parisian-style waltz and a graceful nocturne — arranged by the dance-minded Stravinsky for Diaghilev’s ballet Les Sylphides.
Containing the final notes that Mozart ever composed, his requiem is considered one of the most sublime pieces of music ever written. Guest conductor Jaime Martín takes the podium as the MSO and the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus breathe life into this staggering work of tenderness, intensity, and beauty.

FRI 7:30PM | SAT 7:30PM | SUN 2:30PM
The MSO’s own Principal Oboe Katherine Young Steele takes center stage for Bach’s concerto for oboe d’amore. The oboe d’amore — literally “oboe of love” — was one of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most cherished instruments and produces a warm, mellow, and deeply expressive tone. Closing the program is Handel’s rousing Music for the Royal Fireworks, composed for a monumental occasion: the celebration of the end of an eight-year war and the signing of a treaty of peace.
Holst’s The Planets pays tribute to the planets of the solar system. With astrologically charged movements such as “Neptune, the Mystic” and the thundering “Mars, the Bringer of War,” this iconic suite sweeps you to the heavens. The MSO’s own Margaret Butler takes center stage with an all-toorarely showcased cousin to the oboe, the English horn, to perform Ned Rorem’s gleaming concerto.

In a program unlike any other, the MSO celebrates the rhythms and range of the guitar as seven of the world’s finest crossover guitarists join forces with the MSO to bring this scintillating repertoire to life. These concerts, featuring guitar ensemble Another Night On Earth, span genres from classical to rock, with music specifically written for guitar by composers from Joaquín Rodrigo to Frank Zappa for a completely captivating musical exploration.
“I conceived of it as glorifying the grandeur of the human spirit . . . praising the free and happy man,” said Prokofiev of his uplifting fifth symphony, composed against the backdrop of WWII. Pianist Simon Trpčeski returns to the MSO to perform Beethoven’s propulsive and heroic “Emperor” concerto. This epic drama begins in fanfare and ends in fanfare.

A critic once said of Beethoven’s seventh symphony that it has a “certain secret magic.” The seventh symphony continues to be a benchmark for symphonic compositions today and is praised for its emotional depth and rhythmic vitality. Versatile pianist David Fray joins the MSO to perform Ravel’s lighthearted and effervescent piano concerto.
The “Enigma” variations are an inventive 14-piece suite, with each selection consisting of a variation on a shared original theme written by Edward Elgar. Elgar dedicated the work “to my friends pictured within,” drawing inspiration from family and friends for the tune of each musical sketch. William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast takes you on a biblical quest with the help of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus.
