A

s the assistant conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, I would like to extend you a warm welcome to the 2012.13 MSO Concerts for Schools.

I began my conducting work just eight years ago at age 16 as the assistant conductor of the Boulder Youth Symphony. Since then, I have conducted orchestras in Hong Kong, New York, Philadelphia, Bulgaria, Romania and, of course, Milwaukee.

I particularly enjoy conducting young people’s concerts, not only because I am finally not the youngest person in the room, but because it serves as a reminder of how important it is to fill children’s lives with music.

I am so pleased to play an active role in our orchestra’s educational programs again next season. One concert for which I am especially eager is an exciting orchestral premiere of The Seahorse and the Crab from composer Michael Djupstrom, a friend whom I studied with at the Curtis Institute. It was originally written for five instruments, and I asked him to arrange it for full orchestra for us to premiere. It will appear at Music for Me! on November 6, 2012, along with Peter and the Wolf with guest artists Project Trio. Michael will be travelling to Milwaukee for the premiere, and I am thrilled to have him as a part of the performances.

Music can paint a landscape in your mind as well as the best artist can on a canvas.

Our Youth Concert Series will focus on this theme of “Landscapes,” depicting those near and far. Whether through dance, art or imagination, music will be the tour guide on these special concerts. In the Teen Series “Dramatic Duos,” music will move students with its power and emotion, featuring the masterpieces of Mozart, Wagner and Strauss.

Please enjoy perusing this brochure, and I hope that you will be inspired to attend our concerts. As composer Gustav Mahler said, “If a composer could say what he had to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music.” I look forward to sharing what our music has to say with you and your students next season.

Just as a picture on a wall can paint a landscape, so too can music. Find out how in our three-concert series, “Landscapes”. These concerts feature sounds and scenes of the Unites States of America, Russia, Spain, China, and places only found in our dreams. Whether you choose a landscape from near or far, let music be your tour guide! May 2 at 10:30 am | Uihlein Hall Francesco Lecce-Chong, conductor Strauss �������������������������������������������Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op. 28 Strauss �������������������������������������������Suite from Der Rosenkavalier, Op. 59 As one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, Strauss had a transforming effect on orchestral music in terms of virtuosity and color, elevating the live orchestra experience to a dramatic one. Enjoy two of his most popular works, the mischievous Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche and poignant Rosenkavalier.

Other Information Chaperones One complimentary chaperone ticket will be offered for every 10 paid student tickets for all concerts.

Educational Materials MSO Teacher Resource Guides are comprehensive this season, providing all lesson plans, curriculum, and information in a full-color, informative volume. The lesson plans will be specifically written to support Wisconsin’s Academic Content and Performance standards in Music, Language Arts, and other subject areas. An audio guide will be provided for each concert. A $3 processing fee will be charged to help cover the cost of these materials.
