Acting is a Family Affair

Mom, Dad and daughters reflect on a life on stage

Growing up watching parents David Cecsarini and Deborah Staples perform on countless Milwaukee stages, Miranda and Amalia Cecsarini, aged 14 and 10 respectively, caught the acting bug early.

“You guys may not remember this, but whenever you would come see A Christmas Carol you would always go, ‘Why can’t I be in that?,’” Deborah tells her daughters during a recent interview. “(David and I) would normally just go ‘oh…no...’”

Deborah has performed in over 65 productions as an associate artist with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater while David has been the producing artistic director at Next Act Theatre for 25 years. Although the parents joke about initially trying to discourage their daughters from theatre, they ultimately found the art form helped the girls establish a sense of community.

“We found theatre was an act of inclusion for our family,” Deborah says. “I think that’s what theatre is, it embraces everyone wherever they may fit into a culture or society.”

This sense of community first came when the family spent a summer in Spring Green, where Mom worked at American Players Theatre.

Both girls performed in a nearby production of Peter Pan at The Gard Theater, which Deborah described as a great way to get involved with the new place they were living.

“I remember Mom saying they were doing Peter Pan in Spring Green and that maybe I could do it,” Miranda recalls. “I was like, ‘me do a show?

That’s awesome I want to do that!’”

Miranda is now a freshman at Whitefish Bay High School and most recently starred as Pepper in Skylight Music Theatre’s Annie. She shared that balancing her schoolwork with productions has become more difficult with the added workload that high school provides.

However, she looks forward to performing with the Whitefish Bay High School Theatre Department, which Mom and Dad both agree will be easier on her schedule.

Amalia is a fifth grader at Richards Elementary and recently shared the stage with her mother in A Christmas Carol. Amalia played Turkey Boy while Deborah played the Ghost of Christmas Past.

For the start of 2018, Deborah will play Clover the Horse in The Rep’s Animal Farm, a character name that drew laughs from the family.

“I like to be challenged in different ways and like having to reinvent myself for different projects so people don’t know it’s me or are surprised by it,” Deborah says. “I like looking at a season and saying how can I make these three things as different as I can?”

David will play Sir Robert Cecil in Next Act’s Equivocation. In the play by Bill Cain, Robert Cecil commissions William Shakespeare to write the true history of the Gunpowder Plot — a failed attempt to kill King James I. “It’s such a wildly interesting piece,” David comments. “It’s something out of the ordinary for us at Next Act, yet on the other hand it falls right down our name runway in what it has to say.”

So do Miranda and Amalia plan to follow in their parents’ footsteps and pursue careers in theatre?

“I really wanted to be an actress for a long time, but other stuff isn’t out of the question,” Miranda says. “They (her parents) want me to be a politician or a lawyer or something like that.”

Deborah explains that she and David will support the girls in whatever they choose to pursue, but as they have learned the hard way, theatre is a difficult business with little job security.

“Having seen the liabilities, of course we want an easier life for our kids,” Deborah says. “I don’t want them to not get anything out of performing, but there are other things in this world that they might be able to have that I haven’t had, and that’s exciting to me.”

“That’s the one thing about live performers,” David continues. “You don’t have job security on one hand, yet when you have the job you are very secure because the company can’t do the show without you.”

Off-Key Singing, Juggling and Martial Arts Actors Draw on Their “Special Skills”

By Anne Siegel An actor’s resume attempts to cover a lot of territory. Beneath the description (eyes, hair and height), and the list of roles and shows, there’s a category that theatrical patrons rarely see. It’s called “special skills,” and it includes the unusual and quirky kinds of expertise that are often only used a few times in an actor’s entire career.

The most common skills – accents, juggling and stage combat – are listed on many actors’ resumes. The ability to play a musical instrument, however, could land someone a part, if the show requires actors to double as musicians. Those who can do impressions of a particular celebrity would be more likely to land a role playing that celebrity than an actor who neither looks nor sounds like the part during auditions.

Very rarely, a special skill is essential to capturing a role. Consider Marguerite Willbanks, the actor who spent an entire show singing off-key as Florence Foster Jenkins during the Milwaukee Repertory Theater run of Souvenir (which closed November 5, 2017).

“I had never consciously tried singing off-key during a show,” says Willbanks, a trained opera singer who has been singing professionally for 25 years. However, she admits to being born into “a family of singers.” Getting attention wasn’t easy, so Willbanks intentionally sang off-key. “So it’s not like I wasn’t familiar with how to do it,” she says during a phone interview.

Willbanks spends almost the entire show singing off-key, sometimes hitting a proper note or two before singing flat notes or

ultra-high notes. She says that the only difficult part of learning the role was when Jack Forbes Wilson, the pianist who becomes Florence’s dear friend and protector, bangs the correct notes on his keyboard. “I really try to listen to the character, and not to Jack,” she says. In real life, Willbanks has perfect pitch.

In preparation for the role of Florence Foster Jenkins, Willbanks spent a great deal of time listening to early recordings of her songs. “You can tell in her voice that she was passionate about music,” Willbanks notes.

At the end of the show, Willbanks practically brings the audience to tears with her perfectly in-tune rendition of Ave Maria. “That’s what Florence thought she actually sounded like,” Willbanks notes.

Another actor, Nathan Marinan from Minnesota’s Twin Cities, also had some learning to do prior to the opening of the circus musical, Carnival, which played April 21 – May 14 at In Tandem Theatre. More recently, Marinan was one of three characters who managed to play the entire cast of A Christmas Carol in the production of Scrooge in Rouge (which played through January 7).

For his part in Carnival, Marinan had to look like a professional puppeteer. Having never done this previously, Larry LaFontsee from Milwaukee Public Theatre coached him and co-actor J. Keegan Siebken through several sessions prior to opening. Marinan played Jacquot, and Siebken was Paul. Luckily, the costume designer made the puppets in advance, so the guys could rehearse with them.

Chris Flieller, In Tandem’s artistic director, provided vocal coaching to help identify the puppets’ distinct voices. The puppets had to sing as well as say lines, but it was all a joy to Marinan.

“In college, my favorite class was very physical, learning how to use body movement,” he said. “This was really a treat – playing several characters in the same show, almost simultaneously.

Audiences at Renaissance Theaterworks production of Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls (starting April 6) will never guess one of Karissa Murrell Myers’ “special skills.” In the show, Myers plays Lady Nijo/Win, a Japanese noble woman who lived centuries ago.

Myers, a Chicagoan, is known for her screaming. According to Myers’ mother, her screaming started when she was just a baby.

As a toddler, she was a “very noisy child” in general, who also was fond of screaming.

This came in handy when Myers was cast in a production of Uncle Vanya and the Zombies

in Hawaii, when she was in graduate school.

And back on the mainland, Myers also had to scream when playing Ruth in Noel Coward’s play, Blithe Spirit.

Her most ambitious screaming was during Zombies, when her character had to put her hand in a working garbage disposal for several minutes. Apparently, technicians working inside the sink were able to convert the hand to a bloody stump before Myers pulled it out.

Myers worked with a vocal coach during that play, so she wouldn’t strain her voice.

She has found that her screams are also useful in getting voice-over work. Myers says the trick to doing her most-requested scream, the “blood-curdling variety,” is to begin with a high pitch (she studied opera in college, too).

You’d think this unique skill would make Myers a go-to for scary films. Guess again. Myers says she HATES scary movies, and has never seen The Exorcist, It or Get Out. Go figure.

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR What does it mean to be a good neighbor in today’s society? That question lies at the heart of our World Premiere production of One House Over by Catherine Trieschmann, commissioned, developed, and produced as part of our John (Jack) D. Lewis New Play Development Program.

One House Over joins several other world premieres from our recent history—including, Five Presidents, American Song and after all the terrible things I do—in our renewed commitment to developing and producing new plays. In keeping with our mission, through this program we are attempting to ignite positive change, by bringing to life stories from diverse voices, prompting important and exciting conversations vital to the growth and wellbeing of our community and country.

One House Over attempts to ask what it means to be a good neighbor in a world of fences, borders, boundaries, and closed doors. In a society that points out our differences as individuals, how do we find common ground? How do we make space for each other within these boundaries that we’ve imposed? Just as the characters in this play search to acknowledge and confront their own assumptions and prejudices, so are we asked to consider our own community and what would happen if we removed the fences—both literal and metaphorical—that we’ve built. In this play, people from different walks of life come together to share stories, air grievances, face tragedies, and confess deepest desires. It is not always easy or pretty but these shared experiences are human in the most fundamental way.

Though One House Over focuses on events that take place in a single Chicago backyard, that small space becomes a reflection and microcosm of the world at large. How different is the world just one house over?

This is Zoë’s debut performance with Milwaukee Rep. Other credits include OffBroadway, Your Mother’s Copy of the Kama Sutra (Playwrights Horizons) and Off-Off-Broadway, La Ruta (Working Theatre). Regional credits include Between Riverside and Crazy (Cleveland Play House), Another Word for Beauty (The Goodman Theatre), Oh, Gastronomy! (Actors Theatre of Louisville) and The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity (Actors Theatre of Louisville). Television credits include “Instinct”, “The Blacklist”, “The Good Fight”, “Elementary” and “Madam Secretary”. She’s a founding member of The Living Room Theatre Company and co-creator of #liberated which premiered at Ars Nova’s Ant Fest in 2015 and subsequently was produced at IRT Theater in 2016. Catherine Trieschmann, Playwright

Catherine Trieschmann’s plays include The Bridegroom of Blowing Rock, Crooked, How the World Began (Milwaukee Rep 2012/13), Hot Georgia Sunday and The Most Deserving. Her work has been produced Off-Broadway at the Women’s Project, Bush Theatre (London), Out of Joint at the Arcola Theatre (London), South Coast Repertory, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, New Theatre (Sydney), Florida Stage, Summer Play Festival, Actors Theatre of Louisville, American Theater Company and Edinburgh Fringe Festival, among others. She has received commissions from South Coast Repertory, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Denver Theatre Center for the Performing Arts. She is the recipient of the Weissberger Award, the Otis Guernsey New Voices Playwriting Award from the Inge Theater Festival and the Edgerton New Play Award. Mark began his tenure as Milwaukee Rep’s Artistic Director with the 2010/11 Season.

He is an award-winning international theater director whose work has appeared in over 100 major theaters throughout Europe and the United States. Kevin Depinet, Scenic Designer

Kevin Depinet is delighted to be working at Milwaukee Repertory Theater again where he last designed To Kill a Mockingbird. His designs have been seen at Steppenwolf, The Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare, The Royal George Theatre, Writers Theatre, The Paramount Theatre, McCarter Theatre Center, The Royal National Theatre of Great Britain, Court Theatre, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Denver Theatre Center, Arden Theatre Company, Drury Lane, Glimmerglass Opera, Yale Repertory, Indiana Repertory, American Players Theatre, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, Marriott Theatre and Illinois Shakespeare. Brent Hazelton, Production Dramaturg

A Whitewater, Wisconsin, native, Brent is in his nineteenth season at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and seventh as Associate Artistic Director. Administratively at Milwaukee Rep, Brent oversees the John D. (Jack) Lewis New Play Development Program, spearheads the season planning process, collaborates on internal strategic planning and initiative development, and works with the rest of the artistic staff to program and support Milwaukee Rep productions. From 2003 to 2010, Brent also served as Milwaukee Rep’s Artistic Internship Program Director, and strengthened and expanded the program into one of the premiere internships for emerging professional artists in American regional theater. Artistically at Milwaukee Rep, Brent wrote and directed the Stackner Cabaret hit, Liberace! which was remounted for the 2014/15 season, conceived the premiere installment of Rep Lab and directed Song Man Dance Man, How the World Began, The Whipping Man (closed as the best-selling drama in Stiemke Studio history), The Beautiful Music All Around Us, the final installment of the Hanreddy/Morgan version of A Christmas Carol and McGuire (best-selling production in Stackner Cabaret history).

Abigail works across the development and production of new work in theatre, television, radio, film and online content.

She is currently a development producer at the BBC Writersroom. For the BBC, Abigail has produced radio drama, short films for

social media and a podcast series. Based in London, UK, she was formerly Literary Manager for the Bush Theatre and has worked in a literary capacity for the Royal Court Theatre, Theatre 503 and Arcola Theatre. This is Abigail’s third theater collaboration with Catherine Trieschmann.

Clare Arena Haden, Dialect Coach

This is Clare’s third production with The Rep after dialect coaching Guys and Dolls and Holmes and Watson. She received her MFA in Acting with an emphasis in Voice for the Actor from UW-Madison.

She has since worked as a professional actor, voice and speech coach, and teaching artist for theaters throughout the Midwest, including Forward Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, First Stage, Renaissance Theaterworks, Theatre LILA, and American Players Theatre. Clare currently works for the School of Nursing at UW using actor-training techniques to improve communication and is a proud member of AEA, VASTA, and TESOL. Jamie Cheatham, Fight Director

Jamie is a nationally recognized Fight Director and Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD). Before moving to Wisconsin in 2003, he was based in New York City as a fight director, teacher and actor. This is his 15th show with The Rep, along with Noises Off, The Invisible Hand, Of Mice and Men and Guys and Dolls. His fight work includes theaters such as New York Shakespeare Festival, NYC Opera, Alley Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville and Milwaukee Ballet. His MFA is from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA and is the Head of Acting at Marquette University.

Frank Honts, Casting Director

Richelle Harrington Calin, Stage Manager

Frank is in his second season at Milwaukee Rep as Casting Director and Director of the Emerging Professional Residency. Prior to joining The Rep staff in 2016, Frank worked at a number of regional theaters including Utah Shakespeare Festival, Renaissance Theaterworks, The Goodman, California Shakespeare Theater, A Contemporary Theatre (Seattle), and Paramount Theatre.

He has worked extensively as both a director and dramaturg, and was honored to be a directing resident at Milwaukee Rep in the 2013/14 Season. Frank spent two seasons as Artistic Associate at Forward Theater Company in Madison, and he was the inaugural recipient of the Michael Flachmann Fellowship at Utah Shakespeare Festival. He is a proud graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Richelle is delighted to be working her 14th season at Milwaukee Repertory Theater!

As the leading professional theatre in Rochester, New York, Geva is the most attended regional theatre in the state, and one of the 25 most subscribed in the country, serving up to 160,000 patrons annually, including more than 16,000 students.

The 516-seat Wilson Stage is home to a wide variety of performances, from musicals to American and world classics.

The 180-seat Fielding Stage is home to Geva’s own series of contemporary drama, comedy and musical theatre; Geva Comedy Improv; and Geva’s New Play programs. In addition, the Fielding Stage hosts visiting companies of local and international renown. Geva Theatre Center offers a wide variety of educational, outreach and literary programs, nurturing audiences and artists alike. Since 1995, the organization has been under the artistic direction of Mark Cuddy.

Chad Bauman, Managing Director

Chad was appointed Milwaukee Rep’s Managing Director in 2013. Previously, he was the Associate Executive Director at Arena Stage where he was instrumental in the 2010 opening of the Mead Center for American Theater, a 200,000 square feet, three theater performing arts complex dedicated to American voices and playwrights. While at Arena Stage, he more than doubled earned revenue, reversed a decline in subscriptions by almost doubling the base, and shattered several company

sales records that dated back almost 60 years. In addition, he worked on the Broadway transfers of Next to Normal (Pulitzer Prize; Tony Award), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Tony Award), Wishful Drinking starring Carrie Fisher, Looped starring Valerie Harper, and John Grisham’s A Time to Kill in addition to other notable plays including the world premieres of Marcus Gardley’s Every Tongue Confess starring Phylicia Rashad and Red Hot Patriot starring Kathleen Turner. Prior to Arena Stage, he was Director of Marketing and Communications for Americans for the Arts as well as Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk, VA. He is a frequent speaker and consultant with past clients that include the Smithsonian Institution, Pew Charitable Trust, Carnegie Hall, EmcArts Innovation Labs, Arts & Business Council, Association of Performing Arts Presenters and ArtsMidwest. He has served as an adjunct professor at American University (Washington, DC), Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) and CalArts (Valencia, CA). In addition to teaching, he is currently a Board member of Pathways High School, sits on the advisory boards of TRGArts and ArtsMarketing.org, and is a past trustee of Contemporary American Theater Festival.

From 2011-2013, he was named one of the most influential leaders under 40 in Washington, DC by Washington Life Magazine, and in 2016 he was named to Milwaukee Business Journal’s list of the Top 40 leaders under 40. Bauman is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management program, and has earned a Master of Fine Arts in producing from the CalArts where he was an Ahmanson Scholar and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the Honors College of Missouri State University. In his free time, he is proud to be a co-coach of Wauwatosa East High School’s Destination Imagination team.
