SERVICES Access

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services: The Quadracci Powerhouse (QP) and the Stiemke Studio are equipped with an infrared listening system which ensures clarity of sound from any seat in the house. Performances are offered in American Sign Language for a Thursday evening of all QP productions and one Sunday matinee for all Stiemke Studio productions. We also offer a Captioned Theater performance during the second to last Sunday matinee performance of all QP productions. Please call The Rep Ticket Office at 414-224-9490 for more information. Script synopses are available upon request for QP and Stiemke Studio productions by calling 414-224-1761.

Blind or Low Vision Services: Large print programs are available in the Quadracci Powerhouse and Stiemke Studio from any usher.

Every Rep production has one audio-described performance. Using an earpiece attached to a small hand-held receiver, patrons hear a live, realtime description of the action on stage. NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Our research for this play has been vast, as it speaks directly to the context of the reality in which we live. I’ve learned much about different religions, about the plight of Muslim Americans since 9/11, about the history of imperialism in third-world countries and how it affects all of us today, about how different sectors of the population respond to current events, and about leaders who seek to create divisions instead of embrace complexities.

Disgraced asks poignant questions about our contemporary world and the context in which we’re presenting the play has continued to shift from the moment I was asked to direct it. Major events have transpired, and the questions have become more vital and urgent.

The imaginative power of theater can sometimes converge with real-life events in such a way that we might think we’re witnessing a documentary, a slice of life, but we’re not.

Theater is not a documentary, and many plays are not bound by strict realism. A work of art does not have to take political sides, does not need to represent a whole culture, it is not just an exposition of facts. Theater’s roots lie in poetic language, choral and musical delivery, in pursuing epic exchanges of ideas in order to invite us to a common experience where we are provoked together and we can feel together. Contemporary plays look to provoke audiences much in the way the Greeks did.

All of this said, Disgraced, this imaginative work of art, is in direct conversation with current global dynamics, and that is of tremendous value. The play presents human beings who are themselves living in a confusing world, wrestling with their identities as Americans, with their ancestral roots and with a culture in which, sadly, surveillance and violence have become all too familiar.

These characters are not heroes; they are complex people who often harbor conflicting points of view. In the same way, our world is not simple, not easy, and true understanding will only derive from our willingness to ask hard questions, embrace contradictions and empathize with those who differ from us.

Ayad Akhtar, Playwright

Ayad is a novelist and author of American Dervish, published in over 20 languages worldwide. His play Disgraced won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for the 2015 Tony Award for best play. His plays The Who & The What and The Invisible Hand received OffBroadway runs and are currently being produced around the world. Akhtar was listed as the most produced playwright for the 2015/16 season by American Theatre.

As a screenwriter, he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay for The War Within. He has been 12

Favorite directing credits include Hamlet and 9 Circles, and as a dramaturg, Frank has recently worked on West Side Story, Mr. Burns: a post-electric play, Amelia, and ten Shakespeare plays. Jamie Cheatham is a nationally recognized Fight Director and Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD). He has been staging fights and falls at the Rep since 2013, working on such shows as Noises Off, End of the Rainbow, The History of Invulnerability, The Color Purple, The Mousetrap, ...After All The Terrible Things I do, The Invisible Hand, and Of Mice and Men. Jill Walmsley Zager Voice and Text Director

Jill is the resident Voice and Dialect coach at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She has coached productions at regional theatres across the country and served as Co-Head of Voice and Dialects and the Company Coach at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Regionally, she has worked at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Drury Lane Water Tower, Arizona Theater Company, Apple Tree Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace, Utah Shakespeare Festival and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre.

She has taught at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University. She earned her Master’s Degrees in Voice and Dialects from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (London) and Northwestern University.

Jessica Connelly, Stage Manager

Jessica is delighted to be back at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater after working as an Assistant Stage Manager on last season’s production of Fences. Since 2006 Jessica has been the Resident Stage Manager for Next Act Theatre, where she has stage managed nearly 50 productions.

After Disgraced she will be back at Next Act stage managing Bloomsday, directed by former Milwaukee Rep Artistic Director Joseph Hanreddy. A few of Jessica’s favorite projects include: Dear Esther, Master Harold and the Boys, Last of the Boys, Mystery of Irma Vep, Faith Healer, Purgatorio, Going to St. Ives, Vigil, Race, Three Views of the Same Object, the world premiere of Ten Questions to Ask Your Biology Teacher About Evolution, and Twilight: Los Angeles 1992 (Next Act Theatre); Rising Wind (J.M.Kohler Performing Arts Center); Chesapeake, Trojan Women, The Shape of Things, and the U.S. premiere of Skin Tight (Renaissance

Audra Kuchling, Assistant Stage Manager

Audra is happy to be returning to The Rep for her third season. Formerly a stage management resident and fellow, favorite credits among her 15 shows at The Rep include: The Color Purple, A Christmas Carol, Liberace!, Dreamgirls, The Invisible Hand, The Foreigner, and the last two annual Gala performances. Audra is a 2014 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois, where she graduated with degrees in English literature, theater arts, and history.

Additionally, Mark served as Artistic Director of the award-winning Derby Playhouse in the U.K. from 1992 to 2002, where he directed over 40 productions. He currently serves on the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys.

Chad Bauman, Managing Director

Chad was appointed Milwaukee Rep’s Managing Director in 2013. Previously, he was the Associate Executive Director at Arena Stage where he was instrumental in the 2010 opening of the Mead Center for American Theater, a 200,000 square feet, three theater - Disgraced

performing arts complex dedicated to American voices and playwrights. While at Arena Stage, he more than doubled earned revenue, reversed a decline in subscriptions by almost doubling the base, and shattered several company sales records that dated back almost 60 years. In addition, he worked on the Broadway transfers of Next to Normal (Pulitzer Prize; Tony Award), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (Tony Award), Wishful Drinking starring Carrie Fisher, Looped starring Valerie Harper, and John Grisham’s A Time to Kill in addition to other notable plays including the world premieres of Marcus Gardley’s Every Tongue Confess starring Phylicia Rashad and Red Hot Patriot starring Kathleen Turner. Prior to Arena Stage, he was Director of Marketing and Communications for Americans for the Arts as well as Virginia Stage Company in Norfolk, VA. He is a frequent speaker and consultant with past clients that include the Smithsonian Institution, Pew Charitable Trust, Carnegie Hall, EmcArts Innovation Labs, Arts & Business Council, Association of Performing Arts Presenters and ArtsMidwest.

He has served as an adjunct professor at American University (Washington, DC), Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) and CalArts (Valencia, CA). In addition to teaching, he is currently a Board member of Pathways High School, sits on the advisory boards of TRGArts and ArtsMarketing.org, and is a past trustee of Contemporary American Theater Festival. From 2011-2013, he was named one of the most influential leaders under 40 in Washington, DC by Washington Life Magazine, and in 2016 he was named to Milwaukee Business Journal’s list of the Top 40 leaders under 40. Bauman is a graduate of Harvard Business School’s Strategic Perspectives in Non-Profit Management program, and has earned a Master of Fine Arts in producing from the CalArts where he was an Ahmanson Scholar and a Bachelor of Science in Education from the Honors College of Missouri State University. In his free time, he is proud to be a co-coach of Wauwatosa East High School’s Destination Imagination team.
