F
or over 75 years, the Parade of Homes has been a fixture in the Milwaukee homebuilding scene. Every summer, the area’s leading builders open brandnew model homes to the public to show off the latest design trends, innovation and technology for homeowners to explore. This year’s event runs from Aug. 13-Sept. 5, kicking off with a ceremonial opening at both subdivisions on Saturday, Aug. 13. “The builders work extremely hard to build these beautiful homes for people to see,” says Toby Van Sistine, director of operations and government affairs with the Metropolitan Builders Association of Greater Milwaukee. “With supply chain issues, this year’s Parade is all about homeowners seeing what’s out there, what’s available in this marketplace.” The Parade of Homes will take place at two
sites this year – Twin Pine Farm, developed by Point Real Estate, and Stone Ridge of Merton in the village of Merton, developed by Tri-Quist Inc. Fourteen homebuilders are participating, showcasing 15 new model homes for visitors. “If you’re interested in building a new home, know that supply chain issues are delaying everything,” says Van Sistine. “Building a home used to take five or six months. Now it’s more like nine or 10. So it’s even more important to come out to the Parade and have these conversations early. See what builders are offering, talk to them and figure out your first steps.” But the Parade isn’t just for people who want to build a home. It also features interior design work as well, and that homeowners interested in starting a remodeling project will find plenty of inspiration at the Parade.

SITES TO SEE The Parade of Home’s two developments offer different takes on suburban and rural living.
TWIN PINE FARM Twin Pine Farm is a development in Lisbon. Surrounded by fields and wetlands, the subdivision offers a quiet, rural feel near the Bugline Recreational Trail. The Parade of Homes is showcasing nine houses here in a cul de sac. “This development has a neighborly feel,” says Van Sistine. “They’re beautiful houses all close together in a great setting.”
STONE RIDGE OF MERTON Stone Ridge of Merton offers large lot sizes. The development has over 130 acres of land, including hills and forests, with 25 acres dedicated to parks, trails and bike paths. The Parade of Homes has six new houses in this subdivision, farther apart than the Twin Pine Farm offerings. “It’s a great community to live in,” Van Sistine says. “The walking trails are beautiful, and you get the rolling hills of Lake Country.”

BUILDING PERFORMANCE CONSULTANTS A BUILDING PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT is a Residential Energy Services Network-accredited energy rater, who verifies that builders’ homes meet Focus on Energy’s requirements. Focus on Energy works with these consultants on each new home the program certifies. This work usually starts before ground is broken. The consultant enters the proposed house plan into energy modeling software to determine its potential energy efficiency. The consultant then checks the home twice during construction and conducts a final test after it is built to determine its efficiency. “The program has built-in risk management,” Andy Kuc says. “Builders who do not participate in Focus on Energy cannot provide this level of reliable and dependable information.”

“Do some window shopping,” Van Sistine says. “Whether it’s paint colors, countertops, textures, there will be a bit of everything to see.” This year, homebuilders have been focusing on incorporating multi-use spaces into their new builds, as well as increasing energy efficiency. Remodeling projects have been in increasing demand for the past two years, with home gyms, entertainment centers and office spaces all near the top of homeowners’ lists. “We’re seeing people use space differently,” Van Sistine says. “They’re less interested in dining rooms than in years past and more focused on home offices, after-school spaces for kids.” Reps from the Parade’s homebuilders and remodelers will be on-site through the event to talk with visitors about the features in the model homes – and help them get started on their own projects. “It’s a great opportunity,” says Van Sistine. “Whether you’re looking to build a new home, want some design inspiration, or just want your questions answered, the Parade is a chance to interact with our area’s top builders.” ◆
