TWO YEARS AGO, I was preparing for my own wedding in sync with the production of our 2020 Weddings issue. Two immense projects which, it turns out, made each other easier. I was spoiled to have so many ideas and resources come my way via the collective knowledge of our editorial team. We put the issue to bed, and two weeks later I said, “I do.”

This year’s Weddings issue is every bit as packed with tips, tricks and guidance to ease the stress of your big day. It was a privilege to recommend some of the things that made my own wedding special – like Judge Derek Mosley (page 10), who led our heartfelt ceremony, a fish fry rehearsal dinner (page 14), and the lovely ladies at Bay View Printing Co., who go above and beyond to create stunning invitation suites (page 48).

Savor this happy time as you start to plan for the big day. These ideas will help ease you into the wedding realm.

The quick answer is almost anyone! The state of Wisconsin has only a few simple requirements. First off, officiants must be at least 18 years old. And they must be a judge, appointed court commissioner or ordained minister. The loophole here is that recognizesWisconsinonline youcertificatetionasomeoneChurchlikewithsoordainednondenominationalandministers,aquickprocessanorganizationtheUniversalLifecanqualifytoperformmarriage(ordinaisfreebutthe–whichwillneed–is$18;

The Maestro of Marriage

Most of the weddings haven’t been so dramatic, Mosley says. And despite the pandemic, he has still been booked week after week and has no plans to slow down. “I started doing weddings to find that happiness, and now I’m in that happy place every weekend.”

“When you’re on dialysis every night, it pains you,” Mosley says. “I was looking for some happiness. … [Wed dings] were a happy place for me. When you see the couple look each other in the eyes and profess their love in front of their closest friends, that’s the most special moment.”

Soon, dozens of couples who had seen him at weddings or heard about him through friends were reaching out personally about officiating their ceremonies.

In 2016, he received a kidney transplant and went off the

His 1,000-some weddings haven’t been without hiccups. He once forgot the rings and had to chase the newly married couple down as they left the church. And on one particularly memorable occasion, a groomsman was so intoxicated that he lost control of his bladder mid-ceremony.

Mosley’s path to becom ing one of the most popular officiants in the city began in 2014, when he was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. During his long, difficult treatment, Mosley, who has been a municipal judge since 2002, decided that he wanted to officiate more weddings.

Who Can Officiate?

Judge Derek Mosley has a once-a-week habit of officiating weddings.

IN JUNE OF 2019, Derek Mosley married Angela Gonzalez and Jessica Neuendorf on a patio overlooking the Milwaukee River. When the couple kissed, it was also a special moment for Mosley – he had just offi ciated his 1,000th wedding.

His ceremonies often include special touches, such as the couple passing the rings around the room to their loved ones – to “warm” them and send bless ings – before putting them on.

WE HAD PLANNED a small, intimate wedding. When COVID happened, we held off, and then halfway through the summer, we thought, “We’re tired of waiting.” I’m an attorney, so I know that you don’t need someone to officiate you in Wisconsin, so I said, “We’ll just do it ourselves.” It was not formal at all. We had it in our living room with my husband Marco’s parents and my mom and my grandma, and we got married in front of our fireplace. I didn’t even wear my wedding dress. We read vows that we put together ourselves. You don’t have to say anything official, but we did because we thought it was funny –“We pronounce ourselves married.” At some point, I want to have the reception and take pictures, but we weren’t worried about it then, because to us it was more about the marriage and less about the wedding. – EMILY CASTRO

If you’re like most brides, some of your closest friends might be men. So why not party with them, too? 2021 bride, and former MilMag editor, Lindsey Anderson Rios kicked off her co-ed bachelorette party with dinner and a river cruise before heading to a comedy club, where one of her bridesmen was performing. “It just felt like a fun party, it felt very me,” she says.

This is becoming increasingly commonplace, especially with couples who have lived together before tying the knot. “We’re both in our 30s; we didn’t really need all the kitchen stuff,” says Anderson Rios, who decided not to have a wedding shower. Instead, she invited her mother to the bachelorette bash so that she could be included in pre-wedding festivities.

And beyond the initial price tag and the cost of alterations, the overall expense of owning your gown goes up when the party’s over, with bloated cleaning and stor age fees typically adding several hundred dollars. Is there a cheaper option?

“I wanted a boho-vintage theme but I didn’t want rustic. It was so magical for people. We also loved the greenery,” says Rivero-Poplar, a clinical psychologist who works with veterans and active military. Her husband is an application engineer. They met five years ago through his sister, who worked out at Monkey Bar Gym along with Rivero-Poplar. On a trip to Door County, Poplar proposed.

“You can sleep in this dress,” she says about her choice, which features six different lace patterns, a tawny-hued lin ing, and cap sleeves added by a friend. “It’s so comfortable. It conveys the boho theme but with a sense of elegance, and there are sparkles in the lace. I felt very beautiful and at the same time comfortable.”

Shopping for the dress took on a manic pace. “I scheduled a whole weekend of places to visit,” says Rivero-Poplar, who knew she didn’t want beading, sequins or “heaviness.”

“I grew up going to these tea ceremonies,” says Le Dern. For hers, she wore a traditional áo dài made in Vietnam to her measurements. “My mom reached out to one of her cousins who lives in Ho Chi Minh City,” she says of the garment, which is commonplace in her par ents’ birth country and often styled for special occasions like this one. “The fact that it’s from Vietnam means a lot to me. I haven’t been there since I was in the fourth grade.”

As for her wedding gown, Le Dern chose one with a slim bottom and lacy tank top. “I tried on 30 dresses,” she says. “Of course, I picked the first dress I tried on.”

The health care clinical manager met her husband, who works in water treatment, in 2018 at a friend’s party. A few months later, timed with the season’s first snowfall, he proposed.

The Florida Keys is a nice option for a road trip from Miami, but you can still spend a night in Miami Beach to experience its bustling nightlife and Art Deco buildings converted into fun hotels. Take as much time as you like to coast from Miami to Key West along U.S. Highway 1, also known as the Overseas Highway, suspended above the Atlantic Ocean in some parts. Without stopping, the drive is about 3.5 hours. Check into the full-fledged resort experience in Key Largo at Playa Largo (the Bubbles and Bliss package provides a 50-minute spa treatment and champagne daily) or, in Islamorada, Cheeca Lodge & Spa (private balconies and a soaking tub are two highlights – with the tub on the balcony in some suites) and again in Key West at Casa Marina Key West. State park hiking, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling and sunset sails can easily be woven into your itinerary, with either resort as base camp. Don’t forget to order key lime pie while you’re there. And if you’re a liter ature buff – or simply love felines – touring Ernest Hemingway’s former hideaway is a must.

After the stress of planning a wedding, who wants to deal with layovers and connecting flights for honeymoon travel? Stay downtown at the glitzy and glam The Joseph (boasts Rose, a spa on the 21st floor; a rooftop lounge; an Italian eatery called Yolan from former Kenosha chef and James Beard Award-winner Tony Mantuano; and a world-class art collection), or choose a funky, off-beat option like The Russell, a 23-room hotel within a former 115-year-old East Nashville church (stained-glass windows intact). One of the city’s best locally sourced food menus is at Folk, where items shift with the seasons, such as a calzone with pumpkin-seed pesto kale and delicata squash in autumn. Start at the bar with a glass of wine or whimsical cocktail (like the Herb Alpert: tequila infused with ginger, cilantro, passionfruit and lime), and then move into the high-ceilinged dining room or plant-adorned patio for a lingering dinner. Want to hear live music but not in a rowdy bar? Choose an intimate venue, like the legendary Bluebird Cafe, where up-and-coming songwriters perform. You might recognize those song lyrics a year later in a Top 40 hit. Stretch your legs and hold hands at the 55-acre Cheekwood botanical gardens and historic Georgian estate, which features a sculpture-art trail.

THE RUSSELL

who inspired the Biltmore’s design). Drop by the winter estate of the late architect on a Taliesin West tour and, if you’re energetic enough, hike up Scottsdale’s Camelback Mountain, a popular weekend activity for locals. Splurge on dinner at TripAdvisor’s mostromantic restaurant in Phoenix: Different Pointe of View, in the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, with walls of windows overlooking the mountainous landscape 1,800 feet above the valley. Another dining option is Karl Kopp’s (of Milwaukee frozen custard fame) AZ88, nestled in Scottsdale’s cultural district and celebrated for its cocktails and burgers.

IF DOOR COUNTY FEELS LIKE YOUR SECOND HOME, give Massachusetts’ popular peninsula, located 70 miles south of Boston, a try. Summer is perfect for enjoying the six beaches along Cape Cod’s National Seashore, or the 6-mile inland beach on Long Pond. But if you both love wild, rugged nature and don’t mind sporting a few clothing layers, you might even visit in spring or fall. Consider making Chatham, a charming upscale town at the Cape’s southeastern tip, your home base. Chatham Bars Inn flaunts a vintage beach-resort vibe – but on a grand scale – with a spa and farm-to-table events at its very own farm. Wherever you are on Cape Cod, a memorable dinner isn’t hard to find (like at the fine-dining Spinnaker in Brewster, serving Chatham clams) and you might indulge in a post-dinner show (at Cape Cinema in Dennis, a 1930s indie movie theater). A kayaking trip, popping into art galleries or visiting local wineries (Truro Vineyards, First Crush Winery or Cape Cod Winery) are just a few of the many ways you might choose to pass the time. For a variation on the Cape experience, consider heading to one of its neighboring islands. Life House on Nantucket, a 30-mile ferry ride from Hyannis, is a sleek 17-room inn marrying coastal with chic in a Federal-style mansion. It’s down the street from Sister Ship, known for its cocktails and bites.

Toronto Islands on a ferry from the Jack Layton ferry terminal. Once you’ve had your fill of the city, rent a car to experience the Niagara Peninsula’s wine country, about a two-hour drive from Toronto near idyllic and artsy Niagara-on-the-Lake (and, yes, 30 minutes from Niagara Falls). Some of these wineries are so micro you won’t find their wines in the States or even on Toronto restaurant menus. What’s trending here are organic wineries such as Frogpond Farm , the region’s first, where you can sip a flight of four of their wines (Chardonnay is one), and Jackson-Triggs, an architectural marvel with fun pairings in its Entourage Room such as Pop with Jackson-Triggs, which matches three sparkling wines with specialty popcorns.

LOS MEXICOCABOS,

WHEREAS MEXICO’S RIVIERA MAYA IS JUNGLE-Y, with tropical foliage, Cabo San Lucas is in the Baja Peninsula’s desert, rich with succulents, cacti and blissful days of non-stop sun (and a drier heat). For nights out, skip the party town of Cabo San Lucas for the artsy enclave of San Jose del Cabo, where on Thursday nights a walkable art crawl on cobblestone streets brings out the best of this destination thanks to artisans working in sculpture, painting and photog raphy. Food that rivals any big city, but also folds in Mexican ingredients and culture, is served at 12 dining and drinking venues within Grand Fiesta Americana Los Cabos (trust us, the design feels nothing like an all-inclusive, and there are even cooking and dance classes). SOMMA Wine Spa’s treatments conclude with a glass of vino, and some even incorporate wine grapes. A sweet day trip or overnight to Todos Santos reveals what Mexico’s resort areas used to be: tranquil, slow and sweet, with the new 32-suite Paradoro Todos Santos a highlight. Flora Farms is an ideal brunch spot where you can linger: nearly everything you eat is grown on the property, and the neighboring stores sell artisan souvenirs (such as regionally made soaps, crafts, embroidery and fine jewelry) you can snap up for later. A famous landmark here – El Arco (The Arch) – is easily accessible through a sunset sail, traversing where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean on Baja California’s tip.

THETHROWINGGARTER

HERE COMES THE BRIDE

Guests in ancient times would tear off part of the bride’s gown as tokens of good luck, leading to the tradition of the bride throwing both her garter and bouquet.

We’ve compiled our list of favorite “First Dance” songs that top many couples’ playlist.

That is the cost of the most expensive wedding on record between Sheik Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum’s son and Princess Salama in Dubai of May 1981.

Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.

“In Case You Don’t Live Forever” by Ben Platt

Brides traditionally wore veils because ancient Greeks and Romans believed they protected them from evil spirits.

Is the amount of time actress Zsa Zsa Gabor and attorney/character actor Felipe de Alba stayed married in 1983—representing the shortest marriage on record.

Early Roman brides carried a bunch of herbs, such as garlic and rosemary, under their veils to symbolize fidelity and fertility and to ward off evil—a precursor to the modern bridal bouquet.

RING FINGER

The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revelers broke a loaf of bread over a bride’s head for fertility’s sake.

Your First Dance is aForever Moment

The song, from Richard Wagner’s 1860 opera called “Lohengrin” was not actually written with the intention of it being a wedding processional song.

VALENTINE’SDECEMBER,DAY & NEW YEAR’S EVE

“Marry Me” by Train

As far back as ancient Babylon, a bride and groom’s clothing were knotted together to show two becoming one; and in many cultures around the world – including Celtic, Hindu and Egyptian weddings – the hands are literally tied together to demonstrate the couple’s commitment to each other and their bond as a married couple (giving us the popular phrase “tying the knot”).

In ancient Nordic culture, it was custom for newlywed couples to hide themselves away from crazy guests after the wedding and for a family member to bring them a cup of honey wine for 30 days (or one moon).

Bay View Printing Co. handles invitations, save-the-dates and RSVP cards, and the wedding package could also include coasters or maps. “Some couples have no idea [what they want], and we talk for an hour” about the vibe they’re after, while some arrive with clear concepts. Hand illustrations of venues are a common inclusion on invitations, and all fonts are derived from letter presses. “We are marrying contemporary design with old-school design,” Town says.

ADVICE: Don’t be afraid to say you don’t like a design. “Please give us all the feedback and respond honestly,” says Town. “More than anything, we want you to love it and walk away happy.”

NO TWO INVITATIONS printed at this 105-year-old Bay View print shop are alike, and couples get a say in what that design looks like. Armed with art degrees from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Ashley Town bought the company and its antique printing presses eight years ago when the owner retired. Danielle Gagliano, who met Town when they were both professors at MIAD, joined the team in 2017 and became a co-owner in 2018.

One couple represented their new household on their invitations by including their two dogs, two cats and nine houseplants. For another wedding, Town embossed navy velvet coasters with a message from the couple in gold foil: “Eat, Drink & Dance Boldly.”

Mitchell is also the person who might have to run errands for panicky couples, like the time she had to leave a ceremony to retrieve something the couple had left at their home. Or another time when she helped “a couple cut their wedding short because they couldn’t wait to settle into their suite for the night.”

One couple wove teal into their wedding – including a pin on the bride’s dress – to represent a parent who died of ovarian cancer (teal is used to signify that disease). Often a couple’s favorite foods and colors, especially as they relate to their ethnicities, are brought into the theme.

EVENTSSAMANTHASTARR

“There’s nothing more satisfying than seeing the joy and happiness in my clients' eyes,” Mitchell says, “and successfully getting the bride down the aisle. I get to meet so many amazing people. I’m a relationship builder.”

She launched her event-planning business in 2016. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she shifted into micro weddings with fewer guests and a minimalist approach – a more personal format she had long dreamed of, where it’s all about the details. “Having a more intimate setting that’s really thought out is just a beautiful thing,” she says. “When we’re planning a big, grand wedding, we lose sight of those important, intricate details.”

MitchellSamantha

AFTER SAMANTHA MITCHELL WAS laid off from a marketing job after just seven months in the position, a friend suggested she try out event planning. After all, Mitchell had been the ringleader in her family and social circle since she was a teenager. She knew how to plan a party.

ADVICE:

“I was planning events in high school at age 16,” says Mitchell. “It started with the Black history program at Nicolet High School.”

“Who is really the person you want to bring into your special day? Shop around. There are so many amazing vendors in our city,” says Mitchell. Also, from a more practical standpoint, “plan ahead. Things are booking up far in advance.”

Ergen-Jennings coaxed her into the silver dress, saying simply, “They’ll know the bride because you’re the bride.”

She shadowed local wedding photographers before going out on her own. She quickly realized her role as therapist (de-escalating stress) and problem solver (adjusting shots due to weather shifts). And she learned that wedding photos shouldn’t just include the couple.

A fan of organic action shots – “it goes way beyond the bridal party lined up against the wall” – Toldt is honored to be invited into the couple’s circle.

“Anybody can make 50 Instagram photos look great,” says Toldt. When choosing a photographer, ask to see their full gallery. And make your choice based on personality – not years of experience. “Make sure you like them: how they handle conflict, their attitude and their personality,” she says. “Get on the phone with them.”

“You spend more time with the bride that day than anyone else,” she says. “You see a lot of joy and a lot of nerves, anxiety and stress. I love sitting with someone through those emotions.”

“A lot of people think a wedding is all about its romance,” she says. “That day is actually about the coming together of families. You see love on so many spectrums.”

SNAPPING KIDS’ PHOTOS for school pictures wasn’t Hannah Toldt’s dream side hustle to her graphic design career, but it made her feel comfortable behind the camera. It also honed her skill with especially shy subjects “to help them see their own beauty and capture who they are,” says Toldt.

An example? When the ring box at one ceremony was unexpectedly empty, the couple’s parents, seated in the front row, removed their own rings and handed them over.
