Trinity Woods hosts Tim Crain: The United States and the Cold War, 1945-72
January 8: The Origins of the Cold War | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods World War II took the lives of 62 million people, making it the single most destructive event in human history. The world hoped for less conflict in the years that followed, but unfortunately the bright vision of the postwar era faded rapidly with the onset of the Cold War. In part one, we will trace the origins of the Soviet-American conflict back to the Yalta Conference in World War II and beyond.

January 15: The Cold War: 1945-50 | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods The United States and Harry Truman strongly opposed Russian domination of Eastern Europe. Initially, the American people believed the Soviet Union could be trusted in the postwar era. However, all of that changed following the Soviet detonation of the atomic bomb and the fall of China to communism in 1949. The rise of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy added to the chaos of the period, as Cold War tension continued to escalate. January 22: The Cold War and the 1950’s | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods The Korean War dominated US Cold War efforts at the start of the decade. The conflict in Korea expanded, as Chinese Communists intervened on behalf of the communists in North Korea, yet the war rapidly debilitated into a stalemate. The Republicans returned to the White House under the leadership of Dwight Eisenhower. The new president sought a more constructive relationship with the Soviets, and hoped to possibly bring about a “thaw” in the Cold War.

January 29: The Cold War and the Eisenhower Administration | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods
Dwight Eisenhower faced Cold War challenges in Korea, Iran, Vietnam, and Cuba. He aspired to lessen Cold War tension with the Soviet Union by reducing US/Soviet nuclear arms. Eisenhower privately believed that it was outrageous and dangerous for the two nations to be engaged in an arms race that could potentially destroy civilization. He believed that Nikita Khrushchev would be open to arms reductions, but all hope for a Cold War thaw ended with the U2 incident during the Paris Summit in 1960.
February 5: The Cold War and the 1960’s | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods John Kennedy inherited much of the Eisenhower Administration’s Cold War policy in 1961. The Kennedy Administration expanded US involvement in VIetnam, as well as Cuba. The Bay of Pigs fiasco in Cuba served to heighten Cold War tension, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. Lyndon Johnson became president following John Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, and although Johnson’s focus was on domestic policy, his administration would soon be overwhelmed by the war in Vietnam. February 12: The Cold War and Detente | 6:30 PM | T Trinity Woods As American forces continued to be bogged down in Southeast Asia, popular opinion began turning against the war in the late 1960’s. Lyndon Johnson announced in 1968 that he would not run for reelection. Richard Nixon secured the Republican nomination, and ascended to the White House the same year on a platform of a secret plan to end the war in Vietnam. Nixon had no secret plan, but he was able to normalize relations with China, and also succeeded in obtaining arms control agreements with the Soviet Union
with the SALT agreement in 1972. Cold War historians view the US-Soviet conflict in the present day as more of a “long peace” as opposed to a Cold War, and for that both the United States and former Soviet Union deserve credit. SEASONAL CONCERT EVENTS:

January 18: Paper Cutting Gallery Exhibition and Drop-in Workshop | 1:00 3:00 PM | C Catholic Ecology Center Step into the beauty of the natural world with a special art experience hosted in partnership with the Catholic Ecology Center. Enjoy an inspiring exhibition by Artist in Residence Bonnie Schetski, featuring her stunning handcrafted paper creations— each piece rooted in the textures, colors, and stories of nature inspired by the Catholic Ecology Center land. During this drop-in event, you’ll also have the chance to learn how to make your own nature-inspired paper art, guided by the center’s educators. No experience needed—just curiosity and creativity! March 5: SSND Women’s Leadership Luncheon “Women as Educators” | 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM | Italian Community Center The SSND Women’s Leadership Luncheon 2026 will take place in Milwaukee on March 5, 2026. This annual event, held every spring across the Central Pacific Province, will focus on the theme of “Women as Educators”. Keynote speakers Dr. Isabelle Cherney, President of Mount Mary University and Becky Pinter, CEO of the MACC Fund will draw from their lived experiences and leadership journeys to inspire a spirit of education, advocacy, and transformational change, and seek to empower luncheon attendees to be a force for good in their communities. March 22: Joe Meyer – Connecting to Christ Through Creation | 6 PM | T Trinity Woods
From an early age, Joe Meyer has been inspired by two passions: his Catholic faith and a love for the natural world. With 15 years of experience in science education and environmental teaching in National Parks across the country, Joe now teaches at Marquette University High School and serves as executive director of the Catholic Ecology Center. Join Joe as he explores how encounters with creation can deepen our connection to Christ, and learn how hands-on experiences at Clare Gardens, the Center’s organic farm ministry, nurture both faith and stewardship.
