125 Years of Art Frederick Layton opened Milwaukee’s first permanent art gallery, the Layton Art Gallery, in 1888, the same year that other civic-minded individuals founded what became the Milwaukee Art Institute. These two institutions merged in the new War Memorial Center in 1957, and evolved into today’s Milwaukee Art Museum. In 2001, the Museum opened its internationally renowned Santiago Calatrava–designed addition.
