Welcome From... Mr Anderson

What an action-packed first term we have had at Milton Abbey After the somewhat sodden Lent term, it has been an utter joy to watch our students thrive in the sunshine on our sports fields. With May being the month of bloom, our grounds and surrounding forests are now ablaze with new life, colour and vibrancy

This new growth is reflected in our exam students’ approach to the “business end of the year ” , with many working towards their final assignments in their vocational subjects or indeed pouring out their knowledge in the exam hall The whole staff body has been particularly impressed by this year ’ s cohort, who seem fully dialled into the job at hand, and I look forward to celebrating their successes alongside them in the new academic year

In sport, the eyes of the school are very much on the tennis courts and the cricket field At the time of writing, we have just heard from our School Pilots, reading the sports fixtures in assembly, that the school achieved some magnificent first-round, back-to-back victories against much larger schools The pupils are buzzing and will surely go from strength to strength in the coming weeks To add to the excitement, we were also given the news of the annual year-group trips at the end of term These character-building trips see the Third Form embark on their first experience of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, the Fourth Form set off on an adventure around the Purbeck Nature Reserve, and many pupils eagerly anticipating the surfing trip down to Mawgan Porth in Cornwall All this, topped off by the end-of-year celebrations, makes it such a special time of year

To our Fifth Form students, whom we look forward to welcoming back after a well-earned rest, I wish you bonne chance in your exams To all the Middle Sixth leavers, enjoy the remaining weeks you have in this most special of places To all our leavers, “May the sunshine be warm upon your face and the wind always be at your back ”

If I may close on a moment that I found particularly poignant in one of my AS-level Biology classes, which married seamlessly with an assembly Mr Watson recently delivered on the remarkable man that was Theodore Roosevelt A student confidently stood up in front of her peers and delivered such an accomplished revision lesson on the detailed complexities of immune response that I was left speechless I recall thinking that this is what being a Miltonian is all about To paraphrase Teddy’s inspiring words: going above and beyond; working outside your comfort zone; daring; trying something new; being in the arena covered in dust and dirt; looking out, not looking in; and striving to be the best version of oneself possible This is what builds knowledge, resilience and character This is what it means to be a Miltonian Have a wonderful and well-deserved half-term break when it comes

Fourth Form enjoyed a field trip to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, exploring the remarkable geology of this iconic stretch of the Dorset coastline

Mrs Cavallaro led the group with a fascinating and informative talk, explaining how the landscape has been shaped over millennia Her clear explanations of coastal erosion, rock formation and the processes behind these striking natural features brought the subject vividly to life Students were particularly engaged as they observed first-hand the unique formations that make this area so significant

Fifth Form students put their Spanish speaking skills to the test in mock job interviews At our school, students lead the conversation, giving every learner the chance to practise, build confidence, and be heard

Did they get the job? Not quite… Did they leave more prepared for their GCSE speaking exams? Absolutely!

GCSEBiology

Excellent work from our Fourth Form scientists as they completed the GCSE Biology Required Practical on the effects of exercise on heart rate

Students investigated a range of exercise types, analysed their findings by calculating percentage changes from resting to maximum BPM, and demonstrated their scientific skills through detailed write-ups featuring variables, graphs, conclusions, and evaluations

Our BTEC Film, TV & Performing Arts students enjoyed an inspiring behind the scenes visit to Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.

From iconic sets to special effects and production design, students experienced the magic of filmmaking through the lens of their studies, bringing vocational learning to life in a truly unforgettable way.

HospitalityGala

The Hospitality students are to be warmly commended for their outstanding contribution to the recent gala dinner held at Chettle House, an event which successfully raised an impressive £300,000 in support of the new wing at Dorchester County Hospital

A group of Milton Abbey students volunteered for the evening, working alongside professional caterers, Kitt & Kee, to help deliver a polished and memorable occasion for 250 guests The gala featured live music and a lively auction, all set against the backdrop of the magnificent Chettle House.

Mr Vigar and Mrs Burg would like to warmly congratulate Lower Sixth students, Lucy T, Rosie W, Rory S, Greg P, Henry H and Jovi C, for their participation in this year ’ s Ten Tors Challenge After an early 5am wake-up to the iconic Chariots of Fire, the team showed excellent organisation and resilience as they prepared for the day ahead Joining over 2,000 participants on the hillside south of Okehampton Camp, they approached the start with enthusiasm and determination

Following the traditional two-gun salute, the team set off across Dartmoor and enjoyed a very successful first day, demonstrating strong teamwork, navigation skills and positivity throughout the demanding 30-mile trek Unfortunately, due to injuries and the physical demands of the challenge, the team were unable to continue on the second day However, this does not diminish their achievement in any way

The Ten Tors Challenge demands courage, endurance and teamwork, and these students displayed all of those qualities throughout. They should be extremely proud of their efforts and of the way they represented the school

The darkroom remains one of the most magical spaces within the Art Department at Milton Abbey.

In an age dominated by digital images, stepping into the darkroom feels almost like entering another world: one illuminated only by dim red safelights, filled with the distinctive smell of photographic chemicals, and alive with anticipation as images slowly emerge from blank sheets of paper

Mr Lukosius’s Third Form Art class have been exploring still life drawing through mixed media pencil and charcoal studies.

As part of the Lower Sixth personal investigation for their Critical and Contextual Studies, it has been wonderful to see each student’s vision and individuality come to life.

Fourth Form Fashion students have been exploring consumerism, and have been talking through their projects with each other and giving feedback with Mrs Richmond and Ms Noble.

Ila K, Lower Sixth, talks to us about her personal investigation in Critical and Contextual studies:

“As someone who is half Indian, with my Indian side of the family having migrated to East Africa around three or four generations ago, I was interested in researching this part of my cultural background in greater depth I wanted to explore the connections between Indian and East African culture and gain a deeper understanding of my heritage

I am also particularly interested in textiles and fashion, which links closely to my studies in fashion as another subject. The influence of Indian craft and textiles on Kenyan visual culture interests me because it combines both my personal background and my creative interests Through this investigation, I hope to explore how pattern, fabric, craftsmanship, and design have shaped visual culture in Kenya and how these influences continue to be reflected in contemporary fashion and identity ”

CRICKET

1st XI vs Canford – Won by 5 wickets

A strong performance from the 1st XI at home Canford posted 113, but Milton Abbey chased confidently, reaching the target with overs to spare Euan J, Middle Sixth starred with both bat and ball, supported well by Charlie H, Middle Sixth A well earned win played in excellent spirit

1st XI vs Warminster – Won by 6 wickets

Another composed performance on the road Chasing 127, the team paced the innings well to secure victory Euan led the scoring with a fluent 43, while Ben B, Lower Sixth, delivered an excellent spell, taking 3 wickets A second convincing win of the week

U15A vs Canford (Triangular) – Won both matches

A superb afternoon for the U15A side, winning both shortformat games Positive, attacking batting from Fourth Form students, Austin N, Noah R, Cameron T and Jonny L, proved decisive, alongside excellent running between the wickets A fantastic team performance

Congratulations to Charlie who was awarded his MA cap in recognition of his tenth appearance for the First XI team.

GOLF

Milton Abbey fielded a six-man team that included two pairs of golf debutants, with Alfie C and Charlie S, both in Fourth Form, showing impressive composure under pressure The pair held their nerve to win on the final hole after a closely fought match

Cameron T and Johnny L, also in Fourth Form, are exchange students from Michaelhouse in South Africa and delivered outstanding performances throughout, with Cameron’s eagle on the 8th hole proving to be one of the highlights of the day

In the opening match, Pablo J, Lower Sixth and Josh W, Middle Sixth, used their experience and home-course advantage to great effect, securing a convincing 2&1 win and helping Milton Abbey to a 2–1 overall victory

Great to host Wimborne for an excellent girls’ football fixture With 18 girls involved, the match highlighted the strength and depth of our programme Against an experienced Wimborne side, the team showed great teamwork, effort and commitment throughout It was a closely fought game that could have gone either way, with Wimborne edging a narrow 1-0 win Players of the Match: Luise S, Third Form, and Laure V, Lower Sixth

U15A Boys & Girls vs King’s Bruton

Two very competitive fixtures with both teams narrowly missing out There was excellent determination and some high-quality rallies throughout

Senior & Junior Fixtures vs Bryanston

A brilliant afternoon of tennis with over 50 pupils involved in 8 different matches The boys’ teams delivered some excellent wins, including a narrow 5-4 success for the U15A side A fantastic showcase of participation, effort and enthusiasm across all matches

An outstanding achievement from a young and inexperienced team competing at the BSDRA Southern Area Championships

The team performed consistently across 10 races, showing excellent control and awareness in challenging conditions

Special mention to Ferdie R, Lower Sixth and Leo H, Third Form for their performances

Finley F joined us at the start of term and has already impressed with his passion and dedication to tennis. He began playing at the age of five, started competing in LTA tournaments at eight, and earned his first county selection at 11. This year, alongside a busy competition schedule, Finley is competing in the under 14 Play Your Way to Wimbledon tournament and has already progressed to the county finals in June, keeping alive his dream of playing at Wimbledon

A | Countryside Management

Alyssa was chosen as a Pupil of Praise for Countryside Management in recognition of the hard work and dedication she has shown recently She always puts a great deal of effort into everything she does, and this has been especially evident in her Equine Structure, Form and Function lessons, where she has successfully tackled complex topics such as the equine excretory and circulatory systems

Leonard has shown great commitment to his coursework and continues to produce great work. He recently gave a confident singing performance in front of his peers, showing excellent preparation by learning his song off by heart.

His participation and effort in lessons this half term have been noticeable and have contributed positively to every lesson

Ottilie has consistently applied herself to her work in a quiet and conscientious manner, making excellent progress throughout the term Her hard work and determination were reflected in an outstanding recent test score, achieved through genuine effort and commitment She is thoroughly deserving of being recognised as a Pupil of Praise for her positive attitude and consistently high standards.

The Lower School began the evening with refreshments on the lawn before moving into the State Rooms for a casino night, where professional croupiers taught them new games and skills

Our students had a fantastic day at Haynes Motor Museum, where they enjoyed the opportunity to race go-karts around the course and taking part in some friendly competition.

A handful of students from Tregonwell and Athelstan ventured out to the Dorset Mud Run with Mr Bonner, for a fun and messy afternoon in the sunshine We look forward to attendin again with a larger group as well as seeing Event Organiser, Old Miltonian, Jack Langmead

Third and Fourth Form students enjoyed a trip into Dorchester, visiting Brewery Square, a vibrant part of town with a great range of restaurants. Students had the chance to explore different cuisines, with groups heading to Nando’s, Zizzi and Meram Kitchen.

Life in Boarding

Life in boarding is always a busy one, with our evening and weekend activities programme.

The Summer Term brings open swim, tennis, public speaking, touch rugby, cricket, chat and relax, as well as our much loved classics

Students met once again to discuss the ethical implications of AI, making the most of the beautiful weather as they engaged in thoughtful and collaborative debate These discussions form part of their preparation for the upcoming inter-house debate later in the term... watch this space!

On Ascension Day, Mrs Rowland and Mr Crane accompanied four of our Milton Abbey School students, Juanita S-M, Lower Sixth, and Fifth Form students Bear H, Rachel K and Rahel K, to St Catherine’s Chapel to celebrate the day with a special service organised by the Winterborne Valley and Milton Abbas Benefice Our Chaplain, the Reverend Lewis Pearson, officiated and led the service on a beautiful spring evening, with sunlight peeking into the 1,200-year-old chapel

QWho are you, what do you teach and how long have you been here?

I am a Design and Technology teacher with over 20 years ’ experience across a variety of school settings Over this time, I have taught a wide range of subjects including Product Design, Graphics, Engineering, Construction, Design and Technology, and 3D Design This year marks my 10th year at Milton Abbey School, which has been a particularly rewarding chapter in my career

Q Favourite memory of Milton Abbey?

There are many memorable moments, but what stands out most is the strong sense of community Milton Abbey offers countless opportunities to connect with both students and staff beyond the classroom, which makes it a very special place to work

One highlight for me was the recent school fundraising run/walk in April Having only recently taken up running, I challenged myself to complete the 12km run alongside students It was a significant personal milestone and sharing that experience and sense of achievement with the students made it more meaningful

Q Best and worst subjects when you were at school?

I particularly enjoyed Maths, Physics, Art, and Design and Technology I was drawn to the balance between creativity and logical thinking, combining artistic design with problem solving and technical understanding really suited me

Chemistry, however, was more of a challenge and never quite clicked in the same way, making it my least favourite subject at school

Q What advice do you give to our students?

I often encourage students to view school as preparation for life beyond it Key habits such as punctuality, organisation, and maintaining a positive attitude are essential

My main advice is simple: if you are going to do something, commit to it fully Take pride in your work, aim for high standards, and meet deadlines Equally important is being open to opportunities, especially those that push you beyond your comfort zone Growth often comes from taking on challenges you might not initially choose

Q What book, play or film would you recommend on every student’s bucket list?

During the Covid period, a student recommended David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell It was not a book I would typically have selected myself, but I’m very glad I read it

It explores how being an underdog can sometimes be an advantage, offering thought provoking stories and lessons that are relevant well beyond school I would certainly recommend it as a valuable and insightful read

Q What don’t we know about you?

I have recently taken up running and am now setting my sights on completing a half marathon before the end of the year, a challenge that will certainly test both my determination and resilience

UCAS UNIVERSITY FAIR

There is an opportunity to visit a UCAS Discovery Fair on Thursday 11 June, on the site of Winchester University UCAS Discovery Winchester 2026 | UCAS

This is a chance to meet with lots of different universities who have stands at this event You are able to ask questions and engage with the personnel representing the universities to find out more about courses

PARENTS’ SPORTS DAY

We are looking for parents, guardians, siblings, and relatives to volunteer to form teams in the following sports. These teams will then play against the pupils in fun matches. If you prefer to spectate and take in all the action, your support would also be most welcome. The more the merrier!

The matches will start at 2pm, focusing on fun and enjoyment At 3:30pm, matches will finish, and we will enjoy a famous Milton Abbey match tea while watching the inter-house Athletics (and hopefully some parents will race as well!)

Mental Health Awareness Week

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, our staff and students came together to embrace this year ’ s theme: Action Throughout the week, a range of activities encouraged students to prioritise wellbeing, support one another, and take time to reflect during a busy exam period

The week began with students writing positive and uplifting messages for one another, highlighting the importance of kindness, encouragement, and connection within our school community Students also took part in a wellbeing walk, providing an opportunity to talk openly, reflect, and enjoy time outdoors with friends and staff

A particular highlight of the week was the animal therapy afternoon held in the Health Centre garden We were delighted to welcome Rooney, alongside our Shetland ponies Lexi and Amber, giving students and staff the chance to relax, groom, cuddle, and spend time with the animals in a calm and supportive environment We are incredibly fortunate to have our School Farm and Stables on site, allowing students to experience the therapeutic benefits of spending time with animals. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces as students took a well-earned pause after a demanding week of exams

Mental Health Awareness Week served as an important reminder that small actions, whether offering kind words, listening to others, or simply taking a moment to recharge, can have a meaningful impact on wellbeing.

Hospitality Development

We caught up with Mrs Monaghan, Head of Hospitality, and Mrs Forster, Hospitality Teacher, to hear about the exciting next chapter for Hospitality at Milton Abbey School
