Photos by George Bryant
Arthur and Mary Reid, founders and owners of Reid’s New Golden Gate Funeral Homes, held their Annual Christmas Dinner Celebration on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza located on South 13th Street. Family members, friends, pastors and church leaders from Chicago, Racine and Milwaukee were in attendance to salute and celebrate the prominent couple in grand style. The evening affair featured an eight course buffet dinner, and a uplifting gospel message by Rev. Dr. Demetrius K. Williams of Community Baptist Church, in Milwaukee, WI. The Reids acknowledged the business support they have received from the religious community. The Reids have three funeral home locations, two on Milwaukee's northwest side and a location in Racine. Mentors and protégés enjoy night out The name Andre Lee Ellis is usually associated with theatrical productions. However, the gifted actor, playwright and producer also devotes considerable time to helping to produce young men with purpose and goals on their minds through his "We Got This" grassroots mentoring program for young African American males in the neighborhood where he lives, around North 9th Street and West Ring Avenue. On Saturday, December 13, 2014, 50 program participants along with their adult mentors donned tuxedoes and boutonnieres, put their best feet forward and enjoyed a night out on the town. They dined at Carson's Prime Steak and Famous Barbecue restaurant in downtown Milwaukee, shared some one-on-one time, and got a bit of coaching in etiquette. Ellis (pictured with raised hand) began "We Got This" in the spring as an informal neighborhood clean-up and gardening project. It has since attracted nearly 100 youth plus male mentors who donate both time and money to help the youth succeed. Photo by Robert Bell
Milwaukee Urban League Guild hosts 4th Annual Chili Taste Fundraiser The Milwaukee Urban League Guild hosted its 4th Annual Chili Taste Fundraiser on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at Gene's Lanes. The event raised over $1,300! The funds will go toward helping the Urban League purchase laptop computers for deserving students. The event would have not been such a success if it was not for the hard work of committee chairman Ingrid Jackson, all of the chili chefs, the volunteers who participated, and all of the Guild members who sold tickets for the event and/or donated bottles of wine for the raffle. Also at the event are president LeVarn Clay, vice president Marie H. Britt-Sharpe, treasurer Bobbie Webber, and secretary ReDonna S. Rodgers.
