Northcott Neighborhood House, Bader Philanthropies and Friends host 'Tis the Season' Thanksgiving event On Friday, November 19, 2021, Northcott Neighborhood House (NNH), Bader Philanthropies and friends invited all to come and pick up their Thanksgiving dinner.

Award winning Chef Lisa Kaye prepared 1,000 dinners for families of four, hence 4,000 meals.

The menu included: baked Photos by Yvonne Kemp chicken and southern cornbread dressing, macaroni and cheese, succulent green bean casserole, gravy, melt-in-your-mouth cake and cranberry sauce. The event was sponsored by Bader Philanthropies, UniteWI, I-Care, United Methodist Churches, United Methodist Women and TMJ4.

Time to amend the amendment?

By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to The Milwaukee Times Growing up in a family that was liberally sprinkled with members of professional law enforcement – including local police and sheriff ’s departments and the FBI, I developed some basic viewpoints about the law and guns.

Two of those viewpoints were 1) always try to live within the guidelines of the law; and 2) there is no need for guns in a civilized modern society, because whenever guns are involved, violence, trouble and tragedy are just one misunderstanding away.

The most recent event that supports these viewpoints is the outcome of the trial of accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse.

Rittenhouse’s contribution to the melee was the killing of two people and the serious injury of another. His use of the deadly weapon was caught on video. Gov. Tony Evers meets with members of the Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention

Governor Tony Evers met with members of the Wisconsin General Baptist State Convention along with faith and community leaders from Beloit. The meeting was hosted by Pastor James Ivy at New Zion Baptist Church in Beloit on November 12, 2021. Pastor Keith Evans and Pastor James Ivy introduced and welcomed Governor Evers to the event. The Governor gave prepared remarks followed by a discussion where attendees could ask questions. A wide array of topics were discussed including the Governor's work to defend voting rights, support small businesses during COVID-19 through grant programs and improve educational opportunities.

'Be One In A Million' For a number of months “All of Us Research Program” has led an awareness campaign through our local Black print media and the radio stations. Perhaps you’ve seen their colorful vans at various community events and buildings where they have been promoting this groundbreaking research program.

In 2015, President Barack Obama introduced the “All of Us Research Program” concept as an initiative designed to leap into the new frontier of medicine and eliminate the one-size-fitsall approach to health care.

He pledged to encourage genomic/DNA information about patients as a better way to determine the best clinical treatments based upon the unique factors of each person. A new medical approach where genetic profiles could determine health care decisions including prescriptions, treatment strategies and customized treatments for the individual.

“Precision medicine” aims to improve health by targeting the exact disease and its

uniqueness for each individual.

The “All of Us Research Program” guided under the National Institutes of Health, encourages each of us to ‘Be One In A Million’.

The collective knowledge, especially among the African American and LatinX communities, is a critical component in the collective knowledge that will ensure better health.

Data about racial tendencies and positive health outcomes traditionally show our Caucasian and Asian American counterparts are more proactive and generally seek medical attention earlier. As a result, our disparity figures continue to show we must be involved in our wellness early, as well as know more about cultural or historical differences so that our outcomes are better.

Men’s Health Matters to All of Us (Part 1)

Many studies reveal that men typically avoid going to the doctor. One study put the number as high as 60-percent. They would rather do anything, even clean the bathroom, or mow the lawn than go to the doctor. When it comes to mental health, the situation is worse. Men are less likely than women to seek mental health help for depression, substance addiction or stressful life events, including anxiety and trauma.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison All of Us Milwaukee team at the Center for Community Engagement and Health Partnerships has created a series of Men’s Health Nights, with support from Unity Gospel House of Prayer, Raising the Bar non-profit and the Community Action Aging Resource Network (CAARN). Bashir Easter, Ph.D., assistant director of UW All of Us Milwaukee talks to us about the series.

Milwaukee Times: What kind of response have you gotten from the men?

Dr. Bashir Easter: At our first event, we had 35 men show up to talk about stress.

They received blood pressure checks and only four knew what the blood pressure numbers meant. So, we talked about how to use the numbers for optimal health, and the men just wanted to share. We did not even get to show the film because the discussion was so rich, and the men wanted to meet again. The second meeting didn’t get as many men, but we had some key leaders and influencers in the community. The leaders watched Garrett Davis’ mental health short film which talked about the impact of stress on African American men, and we knew that these sessions needed to continue.

Milwaukee Times: Dr. Easter, what is Men’s Health Night and how did it come about?

Dr. Bashir Easter: Men’s Health Night gives an opportunity for men to get together and talk about their health, and it came about organically in a place familiar to most men, the barbershop. I happened to see Pastor Marlon Lock from Unity Gospel House of Prayer at the barbershop, and I was talking about the need for men to know more about their health. He felt the same way. We brought it to Robert Jackson from Raising the Bar non-profit. We got the license for the film, Daddy’s Boys, produced by Garrett Davis that explores the im-
