On Friday, September 30, 2016 at the Astor Hotel, Riverside University High School held their "All City Class Reunion." This momentous occasion featured alumni attending who graduated since the 1950's and beyond, with the Classes of '72, '81, and '74 having the biggest turnouts.

On Tuesday, September 27, 2016 the Milwaukee Urban League, the Department of Workforce Development, Milwaukee County, the City of Milwaukee, Employ Milwaukee Workforce Development, and Job Center of Wisconsin hosted the opening of the Neighborhood Job Center Access Point inside the Milwaukee Urban league, 435 West North Ave. The Access Point helps individuals looking for work find better-paying jobs, by provide help with resume creation, job applications, job searches, resources for former offenders, information about GED and skill resources, referrals for childcare assistance, housing and transportation, and to connect individuals with specialized services for their unique job abilities and needs. Divas in Training attend first-ever Brewers 'Give Back Game' On Sunday, September 23, 2016 the Milwaukee Brewers hosted their first annual "Give Back Game" at Miller Park, in which the team donated ticket proceeds from their final home game of the season to four local charities. As part of this special event, fans had the opportunity to secure tickets to the Crew's match-up with the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for a donation to a charity of their choosing. Among the local charities that were invited to attend and receive donations by the Brewers was Born 2 Dream Divas In Training. Born 2 Dream helps educate young women in business and entrepreneurship to prepare them to be the future business leaders of America. Currently, the group is raising funds to open a bakery that they will staff and run themselves.

Police Chief says Milwaukee force is suffering from a crisis of legitimacy The Milwaukee Police Department is suffering from a “crisis of legitimacy” in the neighborhoods most in need of enhanced public safety, according to Police Chief Edward Flynn, who was interviewed by a panel of journalists at a Milwaukee Press Club Newsmaker Luncheon on September 29.

Chief Flynn blamed at least part of the loss of confidence in the police on “disinvestment in urban centers by state governments” which he said “have become actively hostile to the needs of urban communities,” particularly in Wisconsin. The lack of support is particularly unfortunate coming as it does at a time when police are expected to assume responsibility for a “whole raft of problems” for which they are neither equipped nor were previously expected to manage.

Most of the violent crime in Milwaukee, according to Chief Flynn, occurs when two or more armed criminals confront each other. In those instances the casualties are not limited to the criminals, but also to law abiding citizens, including children, who become caught up in the crossfire.

“Most Sherman Park res-

idents were victims of the [August 13-14] violence, not perpetrators,” he said.

“Criminals that terrorize the neighborhood during the week were the ones that were putting bullet holes in our cruisers.”

Police officers must exercise potentially life-altering decisions under extreme pressure and usually with incomplete information and a very short period of time

in which to react. Technology, such as police cameras can be helpful, but just like instant replay has not proven perfect in the National Football League, Chief Flynn said cameras and other technology will not always prove beyond a shadow of a doubt what happened. He contrasted the respect that the public generally gives to members of the U.S. Armed Forces with that given to members of the law enforcement community. “It’s amazing that soldiers are treated as heroes,” he said, “but if they exchange green [uniforms] for blue they get no benefit of the doubt.

“We are the most violent country in the developed world,” he said. “We routinely throw 23 - and 24-yearolds into a role where they are expected to be both the Marines and the Peace Corps.”

On September 24, 2016 Mayor Tom Barrett present-

ed his proposed 2017 city budget which included a $25 million increase in law enforcement. In contrast to Chicago which is planning to increase its police force by about 500, Mayor Barrett’s budget calls for hiring enough officers to replace those who are expected to retire. Of the $25 million increase to the police budget, $23 million is set aside for wage settlement and pension contributions. Chief Flynn said that as the state has contributed less and less funding to Milwaukee, the city has been forced to shoulder more of the cost itself.

Chief Flynn has served as the city of Milwaukee’s senior law enforcement officer since 2008. He was recently appointed to a third fouryear term, making him the longest serving Milwaukee Police Chief since Harold Breier, served as police chief from 1964-1984.

Due to recent court rulings, Wisconsin voters once again enjoy liberal access to in-person early voting before Election Day, November 8th.

If you are already registered to vote, all you need to bring is a photo identification. If you are not registered, you can register when you vote by bringing proof of residence – typically a bill or lease which includes your address – and a photo identification. For additional information visit www.myvote. wi.gov.

There is no early voting the Sunday or Monday before the election.

The following are the locations and times that early voting is available in Milwaukee and Madison.

Milwaukee - Downtown Early voting is underway at the Zeidler Municipal Building. Voters who have already registered can enter at 830 N. Market Street. Voters who need to register before voting may enter at 841 N. Broadway.

Early voting at Zeidler is available every Monday through Friday until October 22nd between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

On the Saturdays of October 15, October 22 and October 29, early voting is available between noon and 5:00 p.m. On the Sundays of October 23 and October 30 early voting is also available between noon and 5:00 p.m.

Beginning Monday, October 23, early voting is available between 8:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on weekdays until November 4.

Milwaukee – Central/ North Side Early voting begins October 10 at Midtown Center.

Voters can enter on N. 56th St. and W. Capitol Dr. or on W. Ely Pl. and W. Fond du Lac Ave. Early voting is available Monday through Friday between October 10 and October 21 between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. On Saturday October 15 and October 22 early voting is available between noon and 5:00 p.m.

What do I consider beautiful?” If you have no answer to these questions it may be time to rethink your existence. Everyone should have something in their life that they find beautiful and pleasing to the eye. No matter what the news says, there is time to observe the beauty in the world. For those who can’t find anything beautiful in their lives here are some possible avenues.

city to find nature. Natural life takes place all around you but many people are blind to it. A bird singing in trees takes place in the hardest ghetto. The turning of the leaves announcing the change of season is beautiful to look at. A fresh cut and trimmed lawn is pleasing to the eye.

Those who have children have a form of beauty in their lives. Parents should not let anything take the mental image of beauty they have of their child from them.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (Week2) The American Cancer Society indicates it is very important to find breast cancer early. The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find it before it causes symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Screening refers to tests and exams used to find a disease in people who don’t have any symptoms. Early detection means finding and diagnosing a disease earlier than might have happened if you’d waited for symptoms to start.

Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast.

The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the prognosis (outlook) of a woman with this disease.

Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer help save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.

The following are guidelines for screening for women at average risk for breast

cancer Note: According to the American Cancer Society, women with a personal history of breast cancer, a family history of breast cancer, a genetic mutation known to increase risk of breast cancer, and women who had radiation therapy to the chest before the age of 30 are at higher risk for breast cancer, not average risk.

• Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so.

The risks of screening as well as the potential benefits should be considered.

• Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms ev-

ery year.

• Women age 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or have the choice to continue yearly screening.

• Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.

Mammograms Regular mammograms can often help find breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to be successful. A mammogram can find breast changes that could be cancer years before physical symptoms develop.

Results from many decades of research clearly show that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early, less likely to need aggressive treatment (like surgery to remove the entire breast [mastectomy] and chemotherapy), and more likely to be cured.

Mammograms are not perfect. They miss some cancers.

And sometimes more tests will be needed to find out if something found on a mammogram is or is not cancer.

There’s also a small possibility of being diagnosed with a cancer that never would have caused any problems had it not been found during screening. It is important that women getting mammograms know what to expect and understand the benefits and limitations of screening.

Former Alderman Willie Wade named 'Local Government Official of the Year' Willie Wade, who served as District 7 Alderman for the Milwaukee Common Council from 2003 until 2016, was recently named Local Government Official of the Year by the American Planning Association Wisconsin Chapter. The award was in recognition of his planning excellence in Milwaukee where he was involved in projects such as the Harley Davidson Museum, the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino expansion, The Brewery, The Moderne, and most recently the Northwestern Mutual tower project, the new Milwaukee Bucks Arena, the revitalization of the Century City Industrial Park and the streetcar project.

“As a matter of fact, his fingerprints are on most of the development that has occurred in Milwaukee from 2003 up until today,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Milwaukee Magazine also recognized Wade for his leadership, naming him the “Fifth Most Influential Person in the City of Milwaukee” for his passionate involvement in projects that better the city, and his impressive ability to get things done in the area of development, according to the trib-

North Division students’ mobile app voted national ‘Fan Favorite’

Students recognized at MPS Board meeting for app aimed at supporting children battling disease and in need of encouragement Two Milwaukee Public Schools students studying mobile app development were recognized for their first place finish as a "Fan Favorite" in a national app competition.

North Division High School students Tatiana Loyd and Qiaira Mathews were awarded the MPS Board of Directors Excellence in Education Award for their achievement at the MPS Board meeting Thursday evening. The two North Division students' "Emoji Encouragement" app is one of just two teams voted first place nationwide in the "Fan Favorites" category in the Lenovo Scholars Network competition.

The app is designed to support students battling cancer, sickle cell anemia, depression and other diseases or those with low self-esteem with words of encouragement.

The students earned a tablet and a trip to the National NAF Conference in Orlando from Lenovo and NAF. NAF (formerly the National Academy Foundation) transforms the high school experience by infusing STEM and work-based learning experiences into curriculum to ensure students graduate and are college, career, and future ready. The winning team plans to enter another app in the contest this year and will further develop their mobile app programming skills in the Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles class at North Division. This is the first time the College Board has offered this class.

North Division is only one of two MPS high schools to implement Academies of Information Technology, which offers students industry-specific classes related to the growing field of IT. Students participate in workbased learning activities and internships to put their lessons into action.

The 10th Annual Caring for the Caregiver Conference, an event dedicated to supporting family and professional caregivers, will be on Dec. 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union.

The event will feature an outstanding keynote from the former Director of the Milwaukee County Department on Aging, Stephanie Sue Stein, titled “Caregiving: Valuing the Invaluable.”

In addition to a gourmet lunch, door prizes and a supportive environment with other caregivers, attendees can choose to participate in workshops, ranging in topics from Alzheimer’s disease, mental health, art therapy, senior financial planning and more. Caregivers will also have access to resource specialists, community information booths, and consultation time with experts from the Alzheimer’s Association, Parkinson’s Association, elder law attorneys, and more.

“This year’s event theme, ‘Silver Linings,’ encourages caregivers to always consider the positive impact they have on those they care for, while

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele proposed a $60 vehicle registration fee on cars kept in Milwaukee County during presentation of his proposed 2017 budget on October 3. The fee, which Abele said is necessary to maintain highways and public transportation, would be used only for transportation needs. The fee would be in addition to the $75 state registration fee and the $20 registration fee already paid by residents of the city of Milwaukee. Milwaukee County supervisors rejected a similar wheel tax proposed in 2010 and the issue has not been raised since then. Without the additional revenue, Abele said some transit routes would have to be eliminated and some highway maintenance deferred.

By Jacquelyn D. Heath Special to the Milwaukee Times Equal parts of imagination, fantasy and flamenco join forces to tell the tale of Miguel de Cervantes’ fictional and somewhat delusional knight Don Quixote in the Milwaukee Rep’s stage production of the Tony-Award-winning play, Man of LaMancha.

The time is 16th century Spain at the height of the Inquisition. During the 300 or so years of this societal purge, church and state operated as one. Actions ranging from petty theft to praying to a different God could be interpreted as an act of heresy against the Roman Catholic Church and land a person in prison – or worse.

The play is set in a prison vault in the southwestern Spanish city of Seville.

The vault is like a day room where assorted captives congregate and await trial, for a few hours, days or the rest of their lives.

A motley crew of prisoners is assembled in the vault – male and female, of all ages, dressed in tatters. Escorted by soldiers into this band of accused murders and thieves is a comparatively welldressed gentleman and his manservant (who has a valet in prison?) toting a large shabby trunk. He introduces himself as poet Miguel de Cervantes, which opens up the new arrivals to having their trunk ransacked. Cer-

This world-class actor’s journey has proven that, wherever you come from, with talent, hard work, perseverance and luck, dreams are indeed possible.

The stage veteran has returned to his hometown to play the lead in a six-week run of the Tony Award-winning play, Man of LaMancha at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

“I will be the first to admit that the role of 'Don Quixote' is one I have wanted to play for a long time,” Stampley said. “To play it here in Milwaukee among family and friends is a blessing for which I am truly grateful.”

Nate confessed that he has had a lifelong love affair with the arts which, he said, he probably inherited from his mother Carolyn, a classically trained musician who taught music in the Milwaukee Public Schools. She made sure that Nate and his five siblings were immersed in music – from Bach and Gershwin to hymns and spirituals. His

The Stampleys moved from Oceanside, CA (where Nate, Jr., was born), to Milwaukee when his father was called to pastor Heritage International Ministries COGIC. By that time, Nate, Jr., was 8 years old and described himself as a “typical P.K.” (preacher’s kid). “As the pastor’s children, everyone in the church knew us and was likely to both love us and chastise us at any time. It was sort of like being on stage.”

Nate said he was in 4th grade at Kilbourn Elementary School on the city’s northwest side when the acting bug bit him. He was cast in a school production of The Most Amazing Snowman. According to Nate, “My stage debut was less than stellar.

I flubbed some of my lines and sang in a squeaky voice.

But there was something special about that feeling of being up on that stage that intrigued me.”

Beginning in middle school, Nate transferred to the Whitefish Bay school district as a Chapter 220 student. His parents were particularly drawn to that school district because of the wealth

Nate remembered that his new school was not that far in distance from where he lived. Economically and socially, however, it was a different world.

Instead of allowing the difference to become a wall, Nate chose to use it as a bridge. It was while at Whitefish Bay that Nate got involved in track and bas-

ketball as well as music and theater. A twist of fate, literally – he sustained a knee injury from basketball – caused Nate to choose to pour his energies into the performing arts.

With training and practice, his once-squeaky preteen tones developed into a rich baritone. During high school, Nate was able to land roles in school productions of Oklahoma! and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as professional productions with the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts and the Florentine Opera Company. He also went to Europe on a concert tour; sang with the Wisconsin State Youth Choir; attended the prestigious Summer Music Clinic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and eventually was awarded a full scholarship to study opera at UW-Madison. He graduated in 1996.

Nate’s dream of becoming a professional actor took a detour after college, as he took parts in a few local and regional productions. For a time, he assisted his father’s ministry and traveled with the senior Stampley to Africa on missions to help the disadvantaged.

“Those were interesting, eye-opening experiences that

Also outstanding are crystal-voiced Leenya Rideout as Aldonza/Dulcinea; and Alvin Crawford as the Governor/Innkeeper, helping to push our imaginations along from one adventure to the next.

This two-hour performance has no intermission, but you won’t need one. By stories’ end, you may find that imagination, courage and hope can indeed lift one out of the dungeons of doubt, and open up possibilities, even under the most absurd conditions.

I shared with my father, and I wouldn’t trade them for anything,” Nate said. “But we both soon realized that type of ministry was not my true calling.”

Destiny paid a house call in 2001 when Nate got the opportunity to audition for the Broadway production of The Lion King. There was a slight logistical problem. Nate was in Chicago; the audition was in New York City; it was the weekend following the 9/11 tragedy, and air travel across America was restricted for national security reasons.

“When I mentioned my dilemma to my father, he said simply, ‘Let’s go’. He drove from Milwaukee to Chicago, picked me up, and we drove non-stop to New York.”

Nate made it to the audition and landed a role in The Lion King. He started out as a member of the ensemble, and eventually played the role of “Mufasa.” He was with the show for 6-1/2 years. He also met Lanette Costas, a concert dancer in the Lion King company. They married in 2004 and are the parents of daughter Anaya, age 9, and son Isaiah, age 5.

Public Notification of Completion of a Pilot Trauma Study in Milwaukee County (HypoResus) A research study on the safety and feasibility of controlled fluid resuscitation compared to standard fluid resuscitation for patients with low blood pressure due to severe injury has been completed in Milwaukee County. This study was performed because there is evidence that standard fluid resuscitation may not be beneficial.

About the study This study, named HypoResus, was performed by the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (ROC) - a collaboration of 10 U.S. and Canadian sites that perform emergency research. A total of 192 patients were enrolled in this study between March 2012 and April 2013. Milwaukee County was one of the ROC sites where Milwaukee County Emergency Medical Services and the Medical College of Wisconsin performed this research.

Of the 192 patients enrolled throughout ROC, 36 patients were enrolled in Milwaukee County between August 2012 and January 2013. Twenty-eight (78%) were male and 8 (22%) were female. The average age was 40. Eleven (31%) were Caucasian, 17 (47%) were African-American and 8 (22%) were unreported race. Three (8%) were Hispanic.

Study results This study found that controlled fluid resuscitation is safe and feasible. Study patients treated with controlled fluid resuscitation received on average one liter less of fluid than patients getting standard fluid resuscitation. There was no statistically significant difference in the death rate of patients who received controlled fluid resuscitation (5.2%) compared to those that received standard fluid resuscitation (14.7%). There was also no statistically significant difference in the rate of kidney failure or how many days they needed to be in the intensive care unit or on a ventilator.

Although this study found that controlled fluid resuscitation is safe and feasible, the benefits of this method need to be confirmed by a larger study.

On Friday, September 23, 2016 the NAACP Milwaukee Branch hosted their annual Freedom Fund Dinner at the Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The theme for this year's dinner was, "Our Lives Matter, Our Votes Count" and the keynote address was delivered by TV One Morning News host Roland Martin.
