Molina Healthcare hosts 13th Annual Community Champions Awards On Thursday, October 17, 2019, Molina Healthcare hosted its thirteenth annual Community Champions Awards program at the Renaissance Place, 1451 N. Prospect Ave. The program was created in 2006 to honor and bring together people whose leadership, volunteerism, and public advocacy embody the spirit of service and community. Winners each receive a $3,000 grant for the nonprofit organization of their choice and a trophy. Calvary Baptist Church hosts Annual Celebration of Friendship

On Sunday, September 29, 2019, Calvary Baptist Church hosted their Annual Celebration of Friendship at their church, 2959 N Teutonia Ave. As part of the celebration a group of male Calvary members known-as the "Bone Burning Brothers," cooked for more than 100 church members and guests.

The menu included Shrimp Scampi with Linguine, greens, red beans and rice, curry chicken, and corn bread. For dessert many of the church women, or "Ladies of the Cakes" made vanilla, chocolate and carrot pound cakes. NAACP Milwaukee Branch hosts 2019 Annual Freedom Fund Dinner On Friday, October 18, 2019, the Milwaukee Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) hosted their Annual Freedom Fund Dinner at the Wisconsin Center Expo Hall (third floor), 400 West Wisconsin Ave. This year's theme was "When We Fight, We Win." With the current political and social climate, the theme was highly appropriate. The message of, "If you do not resist and keep fight through the tumultuous times in our country, we will overcome," was echoed by many of the speakers of the evening. The keynote speaker for this year was the Honorable Congresswoman Gwen Moore (inset).

Congressman Elijah Cummings passes at 68 An iconic and honorable member of Congress has passed away.

Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, the son of sharecroppers who rose to represent parts of Baltimore, the city where he was born and raised, died early Thursday, October 17, 2019, at age 68.

The Maryland Democrat died at Gilchrist Hospice Care, which is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Hospital, at about 2:30 a.m. EDT from "complications concerning longstanding health challenges," his office confirmed in a statement.

He underwent a medical procedure in September that had kept him from returning to work. On Sept. 30, he had told The Baltimore Sun that he expected to be back in Congress by mid-October.

Cummings, as chairman of the House Oversight Committee, had recently sparred with President Donald Trump as the 23-year veteran of Capitol Hill led multiple investigations into the president and his administration.

Those investigations also involved the president's family members serving in the White House – his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-inlaw Jared Kushner.

A school counselor once told Cummings that he was too slow a learner and too poor a speaker to ever fulfill his dream of becoming a lawyer. In 1996, Cummings told The Associated Press those comments left him "devastated."

"My whole life changed. I became very determined," said Cummings, who went on to become not just a lawyer, but also a judge.

Cummings was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1983, where he served until 1996. In 1995, he became the first African American to serve as speaker pro tempore in the Maryland Legislature.

He was elected to the House of Representatives in a 1996 special election to fill the seat vacated when Rep. Kweisi Mfume left Congress to head the NAACP. His widow, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, is chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party.

"Congressman Cummings was an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion and humility," she said in a statement.

"He worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation’s diversity was our promise, not our problem. It has been an honor to walk by his side on this incredible journey. I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly," she said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office announced Thursday that flags at the Capitol would be flown halfstaff to honor Cummings.

The speaker said America "lost a voice of unsurpassed moral clarity and truth" with Cummings' passing.

“In the House, Elijah was our North Star," she said.

"He was a leader of towering character and integrity, whose stirring voice and steadfast values pushed the Congress and country to rise always to a higher purpose."

A former chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Cummings was outspoken on civil rights and voter access.

In 2004, he called on then-President George W. Bush to send troops to Haiti as part of an international force to restore order and protect democracy there.

And he was a leading voice among the caucus members last year who called for congressional hearings to examine the fatal shootings of Black people by police officers.

In July, Trump lashed out at Cummings after the con-

gressman criticized the administration's handling of migrant detention centers and his committee authorized subpoenas for senior White House officials' electronic communications. The president called Cummings a "brutal bully" and said Baltimore was a "rodent-infested mess" where "no human being would want to live."

"Mr. President, I go home to my district daily. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors," Cummings said in response.

"It is my constitutional duty to conduct oversight of the Executive Branch. But, it is my moral duty to fight for my constituents."

He called on Trump to help the majority-Black city address its problems with poverty and crime, rather than "trash" it.

Trump's remarks were condemned as racist by many, including Pelosi. The president denied being racist and called Cummings "racist" in turn.

After Trump told four minority congresswomen to "go back" to their countries of origin, Cummings told The Baltimore Sun the president's rhetoric took him back to the racial animosity he felt during the civil rights era.

“I don’t think these Republicans or Trump fully understand what it feels like to be treated like less than a dog,” Cummings said. "I’m feeling the same things that I felt when these white folks down in South Baltimore were throwing rocks and bottles at me. But now, I feel like it’s the president of the United

States doing it.”

He was a passionate promoter of Democratic policies and a fierce critic of the Trump administration, but Cummings was also noted for his fair and respectful treatment of his Republican counterparts.

For example, when Rep. Rashida Tlaib(D-MI), appeared to accuse Rep. Mark Meadows(R-NC), of racism during a hearing centered on Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen, Cummings came to Meadows' defense.

Cummings said Meadows was one of his best friends on the Oversight Committee.

"I can see and feel your pain. I feel it. And I don't think Ms. Tlaib intended to cause you that, that kind of pain and that kind of frustration," Cummings told Meadows.

In his closing remarks after Cohen's testimony, Cummings bemoaned the divisions within the country and the president's remarks attacking his former personal fixer as a "rat."

"We’re better than that! We really are. And I’m hoping that all of us can get back to this democracy that we want, and that we should be passing on our children so they can do better than what we did," Cummings said.

"When we’re dancing with the angels, the question we’ll be asked: In 2019, what did we do to make sure we kept our democracy intact? Did we stand on the sidelines and say nothing?" he asked.

Over the years he worked with many companies, organizations and even worked for several celebrities. But his greatest joy came from teaching children and youth how to be dreamers, and fulfill the purpose of God in their lives.

Darrin was a chef, a fashion designer, an event coordinator, and a carpenter, and often employed his talents for both his professional and philanthropic ventures. Darrin organized many fundraisers for his organization and others that featured the talents of himself, friends, local artists, and his students, including fashion shows, art exhibits, and talent extravaganzas.

Darrin was a lifelong resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His greatest joy was teaching youth entrepreneurial skills and training them how to start their own businesses. In order to further his passion he created his own organization, “Born 2 Dream," which taught kids business skills through workshops.

Intimate Partner Violence Month: : Breaking the Cycle of Abuse (Week 4)

This month we have tackled a very difficult and painful subject – intimate partner violence/abuse. Adult domestic violence is one of the most serious public health and criminal justice issues facing society today.

• About 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men report having experienced severe physical violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime.

• About 1 in 5 women and 1 in 12 men have experienced sexual violence by an intimate partner.

• Ten percent of women and 2 percent of men report having been stalked by an intimate partner.* Domestic violence has no regard for socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, religion, employment status, physical ability, age, education, marital status, or sexual orientation.

In our conclusion of this series, we will address the subject of breaking the cycle of abuse, compliments of the Mayo Clinic.* If you're in an abusive sit-

uation, you might recognize this pattern: • Your abuser threatens violence.

• Your abuser strikes.

• Your abuser apologizes, promises to change and offers gifts.

• The cycle repeats itself.

Typically the violence becomes more frequent and severe over time. Domestic violence can leave you depressed and anxious and even doubt your ability to take care of yourself. You might feel helpless or paralyzed.

Because men are traditionally thought to be physically stronger than women, you might be less likely to talk about or report incidents of domestic violence in your heterosexual relationship due

to embarrassment or fear of ridicule. You might also worry that the significance of the abuse will be minimized because you're a man. Similarly, a man being abused by another man might be reluctant to talk about the problem because of how it reflects on his masculinity or because it exposes his sexual orientation. Additionally, if you seek help, you might confront a shortage of resources for male victims of intimate partner violence. Health care providers and other contacts might not think to ask if your injuries were caused by domestic violence, making it harder to open up about abuse. You might also fear that if you talk to someone about the abuse, you'll be accused of wrongdoing your-

self. Remember, though, if you're being abused, you aren't to blame — and HELP IS AVAILABLE! Start by telling someone about the abuse, whether it's a friend, relative, health care provider or other close contact. At first, you might find it hard to talk about the abuse. However, you'll also likely feel relief and receive much-needed support.

Beloved, records show that more victims are feeling safe enough to come forward and get help due to the numerous resources available to them.

Notwithstanding, battering, violence and abuse continue at alarming rates. Remember, abuse is never okay. NEVER! Batterers abuse their partners as a way to control them. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence/abuse, seek help IMMEDIATELY. In an emergency, call 911. For additional resources contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-SAFE or 800-799-7233. The national

hotline provides crisis intervention and referrals to local resources.

On Saturday, October 12, 2019, The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter presented Breast Health Day at St. Anns Center for Intergenerational Care Bucyrus Campus, 2450 W. North Ave. The free community event featured Froedtert Memorial Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin Surgical Oncology professor Dr. Alonzo Walker, MD, FACS who discussed the importance of breast health for women, especially women of color. There were representative from All of Us Research Program, UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health, Milwaukee Office of Susan G. Komen Foundation, ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Sisters Can Survive, Children's Community Health Plan, and Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority. There were demonstrations on breast self-exam with breast models

Posley stopped in to enjoy chicken, gravy, and mashed potatoes alongside students in celebration of School Lunch Week. Posley took part in a lively discussion about favorite foods and lunch items.

COMMUNITY COLUMN Advancing the community with the M3 education partnership

By Mark Mone Chancellor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee It’s important to have partners in life, whether personal, at work, in sports or the arts.

A significant partnership involving the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that’s dedicated to improving our community’s future through education is earning national recognition and showing promising results.

These hopeful signs, along with the start of a new school year, provide an opportunity for UWM, Milwaukee Area Technical College and Milwaukee Public Schools to reinforce our commitment to M3 (pronounced M-cubed).

Together, we serve more than 130,000 students, and we are working together to forge a true public education network.

Thanks to our collective efforts, M3 is building on a solid foundation.

Graduation rates are rising at MPS. The four-year high school completion rate was 66.7 percent for 2017-18, the last certified figure, up from 59.7 percent in 2015-16. The target for 2020 is 72 percent.

UWM Chancellor Mark Mone The Parent Institute is expanding. The M3 program was originally for parents of ninth- and 10th-grade students, but this year, it’s grown to include parents with children in MPS middle schools.

The program supports parents as advocates for children’s academic success and provides information about postsecondary options and entrance requirements.

More MPS students are applying for financial aid. MPS seniors are completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at a higher rate – 70.1 percent of students as of July 31. That puts MPS

students on track to meet or exceed the 2018 year-end total of 74.6 percent through Sept. 30, 2018.

Early College program participation has doubled. In May 2019, 32 students completed the first class of the M3 Early College program.

Now, more than 60 students are taking 19 college credits over the course of the 201920 academic year. Early College gives MPS students a taste of college life by taking classes at MATC and UWM. Our efforts are starting to earn nationwide recognition, too. In June, a group from Aiken County, South Caro-

lina, traveled to Milwaukee to learn more about M3 by speaking with leaders and representatives from UWM, MATC and MPS. Also, we were honored with an award at the University Economic Development Association national conference in Reno, Nevada, in October. Representatives from each of the M3 partners delivered the winning presentation in the “Talent + Place” category that included two other finalists. The category recognized projects that showed how putting the right people in the right environment benefits the community and economy.

Such recognition provides validation for the hard work of caring people from UWM, MATC and MPS. Still, there is so much more to accomplish.

We share a better understanding of how to work together. Leaders and stakeholders from all three institutions gathered over the summer to exchange new ideas. As a result, we’re in the process of considering new goals that would measure progress well beyond 2020 and include postsecondary

achievement.

The reward is witnessing scenes like the one I saw in May at the new Lubar Entrepreneurship Center and UWM Welcome Center, where M3 honored the inaugural Early College class of 32 MPS students. They smiled, laughed and expressed their hopes for the future – a future that many did not believe was possible.

Graduates like Eric Andrekopoulos are proof of how lives have been so positively impacted by the M3 collaboration. He was initially nervous about his workload going into the Early College program and felt like he was “doomed to fail.”

That was hardly the case.

After completing the program, he planned to join the Marine Corps as an aviation mechanic, the next step toward his goal of going into aerospace engineering.

“I see you’re trying to expand” the Early College program," Andrekopoulos said at the graduation ceremony, “and that’s a good thing to do, especially for upcoming generations.”

SIDS awareness: Five things you can do to protect your child By: Brittany Wright, B.A Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is a very serious issue that new parents must learn about. SIDS is one of the top 3 leading causes of death in infants and according to the Center for Diseases Control (CDC) in 2016, 3,600 infant deaths were the result of sudden unexpected infant death.

In comparison to the millions of healthy babies born each year in the U.S. that number may not seem startling, but what is startling is the fact that most of the babies that fall victim to SIDS are Black babies.

I learned about SIDS during my first prenatal appointment two years ago. The nurse practitioner gave me a pamphlet about SIDS and the proper sleeping habits of infants. She also offered to answer any questions I may have had. Perhaps it was the words “sudden” and “death” that lead to this, but I began to fear SIDS as an invisible monster that could take my child at any moment for no reason at all.

Unfortunately, some of the infant deaths that occur within the first few months are random and unavoidable, but that’s not always the case.

With education and implementing safe parenting practices, you can put your fear of SIDS to rest. In honor of SIDS Awareness month, let’s take some time to educate ourselves and fight to reduce the rates of SIDS in the Black community.

What is SIDS? In a nutshell, SIDS is the unexplained, sudden death during sleep of an infant that is less than a year old. Often times the baby is seemingly health and normal leading up to the death which makes the tragedy that much more traumatic and unexpected. There are several medical and environmental factors that contribute to SIDS. According to Mayo Clinic, premature or low birth weight babies face a higher risk along with infants with brain defects and those who have recently suffered from a cold or respiratory infection.

All of these things can affect how the baby regulates their breathing.

Environmental factors that contribute to SIDS include sleep position, clothing, and crib safety, which we’ll detail later.

The rates of SIDS deaths in the USA has dropped dramatically in the past 20 years due to the ‘back to sleep’ campaign, which advocated for parents to put their babies on their back to sleep.

Even with the strides we have made as a country to combat SIDS, Black infants are still much more likely to die from SIDS than white or Hispanic babies.

SIDS and the Black community The reason for the high SIDS rates in our community is not narrowed down to one or two specific reasons but a group of intersecting issues our community faces.

Education may be the biggest factor in our downfall with SIDS. Many young parents in our community do not have access to pre-and postnatal care, which is where most mothers will learn about SIDS and proper sleep practices. Our community also has lower rates of breastfeeding than our Hispanic and white counterparts.

According to many reputable sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and La Leche League, breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life drastically reduces the risk of SIDS. But, like prenatal care, there is a lack of resources and information for young mothers about breastfeeding, which can be quite difficult, contributing to our low numbers. Not only do Black families have to deal with the same medical or physical factors that contribute to SIDS as other races, but socioeconomic factors as well.

What you should be doing to avoid tragedy Even with the uphill battle that we face there is no reason to feel defeated. There are things we can do to improve our SIDS numbers and avoid tragedy in our own homes.

1. Crib safety Make sure your baby has a clean, flat surface to sleep on. This should be free of blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. Cribs can get expensive and can take up a lot of space. You can look into alternative options like getting a second-hand crib, the Baby Box program, or using a Pack ‘N Play instead of a crib.

2. Sleep position Always place your child flat on their back to sleep. Placing your baby on their stomach can restrict their airflow and lead to suffocation. Babies who sleep on their backs are much less likely to die from SIDS, according to the CDC. 3. The lack of education and cultural stigmas surrounding breastfeeding in our community are the main reasons Black women tend to breastfeed less than other racial groups. Breastfeeding is shown to lower the risk of SIDS in young infants, among a host of other benefits. Resources like La Leche League and Black Women Do Breastfeed are great resources of information and support from fellow breastfeeding moms.

Even as a parent of multiple children or even a grandparent who has raised children of their own, it is good to do research and refresh yourself on things like safe sleep practices and SIDS. The world is constantly changing and things that parents and caregivers did as recently as 10 to 20 years ago have changed and improved to better the care we give to our little ones.

As you can see, a lot of what leads to SIDS is a lack of communication and education, so sharing posts like this and spreading this information to new, and young parents can literally save lives. Sometimes these tragedies just happen and that is unfortunate, but if there are things that we can do to save our families from the hurt of losing an innocent child, we should do everything we can.

There should be absolutely no smoking around an infant. Babies who are exposed to cigarette smoke, while in the womb or second hand after birth, have a higher risk of SIDS. As infants are much more sensitive to cigarette smoke, inhaling it can seriously affect their respiratory health, among other things.

Local pastor who survived multiple bouts of cancer and stroke, releases new book Pastor Wright hopes book will inspire others not to give up their faith in health battles

In 2011, Pastor Lloyd W. Wright, Sr., a Milwaukee native and Pastor of Healing Grace Baptist Church, celebrated his 50th birthday and as part of a New Year’s resolution to take better care of himself, he underwent a precautionary colonoscopy at the recommendation of his physician. He was shocked when the results indicated that he had colon cancer.

Pastor Wright would eventually be diagnosed with colon cancer two more times, but he was encouraged immediately after each diagnosis as the Holy Spirit revealed to him that cancer would not claim his life. He underwent

eight-and-a-half year battle with illness, Pastor Wright relied on scripture and prayer to help bring his cancer into remission and complete the exhausting physical therapy program necessary to regain the ability to walk, read, drive and write, among other challenges.

A Creative Twist on Halloween Carvings W

hen it comes to Halloween, carving the same pumpkin designs each year can become routine. This year, save a pumpkin and carve your spooky masterpiece into a watermelon instead.

Nutrient-rich watermelon can be a healthy alternative to other sweet treats full of added sugar during Halloween festivities as it’s a source of vitamins A and C as well as the antioxidant lycopene and the amino acid citrulline.

Because they are made up of 92% water, watermelons can be an effective way to stay hydrated during trick-or-treating, and creations like a Mummy or Jack O’Melon can help satisfy sweet cravings while keeping friends and family members frightfully delighted.

To get started, consider these carving tips and tricks:

Mummy Supplies and Tools: Watermelon Cutting board Kitchen knife Dry-erase marker Paring knife Melon baller Scoop Vegetable peeler Cheesecloth or gauze Straight pin (optional) Battery-operated candle or light Small bowl Blueberries or bloody candy eyes

To make cutting and slicing easier, the watermelon should be at room temperate when carving.

Cut a small, thin, flat piece from the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base for carving.

Draw the design on the watermelon rind with a dry-erase marker before cutting. If you make a mistake, this can make it easier to wipe off.

Use a sharp knife with a pointed tip for easier, cleaner cuts.

Consider a paring knife with a smaller tip for ease of detail.

Blend scraps of watermelon that are too messy for dicing or slicing to create an easy juice.

Toothpicks, pins or glue Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry.

On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-1/2-inch of rind from bottom to provide sturdy base, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind.

Cut 1-2 inches from stem end to create opening for bowl to be added.

Using dry-erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving. Use paring knife to cut them out, being sure to cut through to red flesh to let more light flow through.

Use melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Reserve watermelon balls. Use scoop to remove remaining watermelon.

Using vegetable peeler, remove green skin off outside of watermelon, similar to peeling cucumber.

Wrap thin strips cheesecloth or gauze around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed.

Place battery-operated candle or light inside carving and fit small bowl into top of carving. Trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely.

Fill bowl with melon balls. Attach candy eyes or blueberries using toothpicks, pins or glue.

Jack O'Melon Supplies and Tools: Knife Round watermelon Melon baller Dry-erase marker Toothpicks (optional) Battery-operated light Using knife, cut thin slice from bottom of watermelon to provide stable base.

Cut circular piece of rind from top of watermelon big enough to reach into and remove flesh. Carefully remove top section and reserve for use as “lid.”

Remove flesh from inside watermelon using melon baller, reserving melon balls for snacking.

Hollow out remaining watermelon flesh and use blender to juice scraps and excess juice.

Using dry-erase marker, draw outlines of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, ears and other features on side of watermelon. If mistake is made with marker, wipe off using paper towel to start over. Following outlines, carve features into watermelon and remove excess rind.

Safe, battery-operated light can be firmly placed inside watermelon to provide haunting glow.

Place circular piece of rind back on top of watermelon.
