SDC hosts Women in Trades Lunch and Learn On Thursday, September 26, 2019, the Social Development Commission (SDC) hosted a Lunch and Learn for Women in Trades, at their facility on 1730 W. North Ave. This women-only session was focused on women looking to start or to further their careers in the construction industry, and for more information on training opportunities. Presenters at the event included SDC Workforce Development and Training Job Developer Courtney Kelly and guest speaker JCP Construction Project Manager Tracy Carson.

Lincoln High School celebrates '2019 All Class Reunion'

On Saturday, September 28, 2019, The Lincoln High School Alumni Association celebrated with their 2019 All Class Reunion, at the Hampton Inn and Suites Milwaukee West in West Allis.

The theme for the event was "Reunited and It Feels So Good."

Lincoln closed its doors as a high school in 1979. This year marks the 40th year reunion for the class of 1979 and a special celebration was held in their honor which included all of the LinAn NCON Communications Publication

coln High School's graduating classes. As part of the prestigious event two teachers/coaches were honored for their contributions to Lincoln's great history. Coach Jim Smalling and Coach Dick Wadewitz provided lifelong learning to all the classmates they touched. Atty. Roy B. Evans and Venice Williams named winners of the 2019 Frank P. Zeidler Public Service Award Attorney Roy B. Evans, a community activist with more than 40 years of education and civic-minded service and experience, and Venice Williams, a community change agent and visionary leader in Milwaukee, have been named the 2019 recipients of the Frank P. Zeidler Public Service Award.

Mr. Evans and Ms. Williams were presented with the Zeidler Award during a special ceremony on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 in the third floor Vel R. Phillips Ante Chamber (prior to the start of the regular meeting of the Common Council) at City Hall, 200 E. Wells St. Attorney Roy B. Evans, a Milwaukee native and graduate of North Division High School, earned his undergraduate degree at Dominican College where he majored in secondary education.

He went on to further his education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the Administrative Leaders Program. During his time at UW-Milwaukee, he worked as a full-time counselor and academic advisor to African American students in the College of Letters and Science. Always on the path of educational excellence, he later attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School where he earned his JD degree.

that teaches cultivation to Milwaukee families. Ms. Williams not only provides the space, but she also provides a multitude of other services in the garden, such as yoga classes, community potlucks, and even shows movies in the garden for the community.

Many of the events Ms. Williams hosts are free; what she asks is that everyone come with open arms and respect for one another.

Ms. Williams is also the visionary behind the Mind Body & Soul Center, where she hosts a myriad of events around topics that create awareness in the community.

Jury finds ex-Dallas officer who killed a man in his own apartment, guilty of murder A Dallas jury on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, found former police officer Amber Guyger guilty of murder for fatally shooting her unarmed neighbor, Botham Jean, in his own apartment, which she said she mistook as her own.

The jury deliberated less than 24 hours. The verdict followed a trial that captured national attention and sparked outrage.

Judge Tammy Kemp asked Guyger and her lawyers to stand as she delivered the verdict.

"We, the jury, unanimously find the defendant, Amber Guyger, guilty of murder as charged in the indictment," Kemp read, as a shriek and hand clap could be Amber Guyger and Botham Jean heard.

The jury, which is largely made up of women and people of color, reconvened Tuesday afternoon to begin weighing a punishment for Guyger. She faces anywhere from 5-99 years in prison.

Intimate Partner Violence Month (Week 1)

October is Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month (a/k/a Domestic Violence Abuse) According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (“NCADV”) on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the U.S. During one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. The NCADV further notes that 1 in 7 women and 1 in 25 men have been injured by an intimate partner.

When it comes to rape, 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the U.S. have been raped in their lifetime and almost half of female (46.7 percent) and male (44.9 percent) victims of rape in the U.S. were raped by an acquaintance. Of these, 45.4 percent of female rape victims and 29 percent of male rape victims were raped by an intimate partner.

These are people you and I know. It may be your sister, daughter, aunt, mother, close friend, brother, son, uncle or

even a fellow church member that is the victim of intimate partner violence. It is time to end the silence and shame and challenge the stigma that surrounds those who are victims of intimate partner violence. This month we will join with organizations across our nation to continue raising awareness about intimate partner violence.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline defines domestic violence as a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic abuse often (but NOT ALWAYS) includes physical abuse. Forms of domestic abuse can include: Physical battering: The abuser’s attacks or aggressive behavior can range from bruising to murder. It often begins with what is excused as trivial contacts which escalate into more frequent and serious attacks (this can

include the abuse of household pets).

Sexual abuse: Physical attack by the abuser is often accompanied by, or culminates in, sexual abuse where the woman is forced to have sexual intercourse with her abuser, or to engage in unwanted sexual activity.

Psychological battering: The abuser’s psychological or mental abuse can include constant verbal abuse, harassment, excessive possessiveness, fault-finding, isolating the woman from friends and family, deprivation of physical and economic resources, and destruction of personal property.

Battering intensifies: It often begins with behaviors like threats, name calling, abuse in your presence (such as punching a fist through a wall) and/or damage to objects or pets. It may escalate to restraining, pushing, kicking, slapping, pinching, tripping, biting, throwing, or grabbing. Finally, it may be-

come life-threatening with serious behaviors such as choking, breaking bones, or the use of deadly weapons.

(Remember, ANY household item can be used as a dangerous weapon!)

Children and abuse: Domestic violence affects children, even if they're just witnesses. If you have children, remember that exposure to domestic violence puts them at risk of problems at school, aggressive behavior and low self-esteem. You might worry that seeking help could further endanger you and your children, or that it might break up your family. Fathers might fear that abusive partners will try to take their children away from them. However, getting help is the best way to protect your children — and yourself.

Many believe when it comes to domestic violence/ abuse, only women are victims of violence. Next week we will present signs of do-

mestic violence against men and help them recognize signs of abuse.

New Saint James UMC celebrates 70th church anniversary On Saturday, September 28, 2019, The New Saint James United Methodist Church held their 70th Church Anniversary at Alioto's Restaurant. Founded on September 25, 1949, it is the first African American United Methodist Church established in Milwaukee. The event welcomed current and past members, who had time to reflect on 70 years of good fellowship. The past and present pastors were in attendance and given awards for their service.

James and Jimmie Mitchell celebrate 70th wedding anniversary

On Tuesday, September 25, 2019 James and Jimmie Mitchell celebrated 70 years of matrimony. The couple, 89-year-old James and 88-year-old Jimmie, tied the knot 70 years ago, at the Milwaukee County Courthouse. The two first locked eyes on the streets of Milwaukee and have been together ever since.

“It was love at first sight,” James said.

The two received a special letter Tuesday from Milwaukee’s Common Council honoring their special bond. The couple was surrounded by family and friends who were celebrating their special anniversary. Jimmie hopes that Photo by Kim A. Robinson their love story inspires others.

“Maybe they’re looking at us saying if they can stay together that long, maybe I can too,” Jimmie said. The couple said the secret to a successful marriage is simple - respect one another. They raised one son and two grandchildren in Milwaukee where they both worked and retired from Briggs and Stratton and still do odd jobs to stay active and fit.

Author Jacqueline Woodson inspires MPS students Reading from her newest book Red at the Bone, Jacqueline Woodson captivated students at Washington High School on September 23, 2019. The winner of numerous awards for her writing, including Newbery Honors in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2015, Woodson talked about her writing career, her inspirations and her challenges, and answered questions from students.

Accompanying Woodson were DJ Kima Hamilton and spoken-word artist and author Dasha Kelly Hamilton. They engaged in a lively conversation and entertained students with music and per-

formances selected especially for the students.

In addition to Washington students, teens from Milwaukee Marshall and Bradley Tech attended the event to hear insights from the world of an author and get a better understanding of careers in writing and creative arts. Woodson concluded the event by signing books for everyone in attendance.

Pulaski students featured in new book, 'Green Card Youth Voices' The stories of students from Pulaski High School are featured prominently in the new book, Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from Madison and Milwaukee High Schools. A launch party was held in September to celebrate the publication, allow students to read their stories, and autograph books for family and friends.

Hosted at Latino Arts, Inc., the event highlighted the latest edition in a series of books collecting the stories of students from across the country. Green Card Voices was launched as a nonprofit organization to chronicle the stories of immigrants and increase appreciation of newcomers to the United States.

The new book contains the

stories of Pulaski students as well as students from James Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin. Narratives were created with the help of editor Tea Rozman Clark. Students had the chance to be part of the process of storytelling, editing, and publishing, and learned about the challenges of bringing a book concept to life.

Pulaski students were honored at a meeting of the Milwaukee Board of School Directors in September.

Local eye MDs review leading causes of vision loss in African Americans

Dejewski “Loss of vision can have serious consequences that can affect your quality of life and independence, including an increased risk for falling, car accidents, depression, isolation, and other unpleasant concerns. Failing sight can also increase the need for home care or nursing home placement. And, the risk for permanently losing your vision is the same–whether you are in denial, just don’t notice, or actually have no symptoms,” explains Daniel Paskowitz, MD, PhD, of Eye Care Specialists, an ophthalmology practice that has served the community since 1985.

Michael Raciti, MD, an eye surgeon who conducts educational lectures for health care providers, adds, “Poor vision is not a fact of life as you grow older. That’s why annual dilated eye exams are crucial—especially if you are black, which puts you at a three times greater risk of losing vision to diabetes than a white person.

“For patients who are diagnosed with diabetic eye disease, our practice has had excellent results with medications that are painlessly injected (every 4-12 weeks) into the eye to inhibit the growth of the abnormal blood vessels related to diabetic retinopathy. These medications (Avastin, Eylea and Lucentis) have been able to stabilize and sometimes even improve vision,” reports Brett Rhode, a partner at Eye Care Specialists and the Head of Ophthalmology at Aurora Sinai Medical Center.

Glaucoma “Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, and studies have shown that black Americans have a 6-8 times higher risk rate, and at least one in five age 75 and older has the disease. Glaucoma is a sight-robbing condition (often related to increased fluid pressure in the eye) that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve, which carries visual information from the retina to the brain. Left untreated, glaucoma can cause permanent loss of side vision and eventually all sight.

Glaucoma usually does NOT present symptoms. As such, regular eye exams are vital to catching it early and preventing vision loss,” explains Mark Freedman, MD, an ophthalmologist with more than 30 years of experience.

“Glaucoma is usually treated with daily use of prescription drops to decrease fluid production in or increase fluid drainage out of the eye.

In cases where drops alone cannot control the pressure,

side effects are intolerable, or multiple types of drops are required, laser treatment (SLT or ECP) or Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) procedures may be an alternative. These take just minutes to perform and are typically covered by Medicare and most insurances. They also offer the possibility of reducing or eliminating the burden of buying and taking daily glaucoma drops,” says Daniel Ferguson, MD, an eye surgeon who performs advanced laser and surgical procedures to alleviate glaucoma-related eye pressure.

Cataracts African Americans have nearly twice the risk of developing cataracts than Caucasians. This difference may be due to other medical illnesses, particularly diabetes.

Black Americans are also much more likely to become blind from cataracts and glaucoma than white people, mostly due to lack of treatment. Despite this threat, most people don’t know the facts about cataracts until they are “eye-to-eye” with one.

“A cataract is NOT a film or growth on the eye. It is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens located inside the eye behind the pupil. It typically occurs as part of the aging process. Six out of 10 people over age 60 have some form of cataract. Symptoms include blurriness, sensitivity to glare, halos around lights, and new glasses not improving vision,” explains David Scheidt, OD, an optometrist who performs pre- and post-operative care for cataract patients.

The only effective treatment for cataracts is to make a very tiny opening in the eye, surgically remove the cloudy lens (cataract), and replace it with an intraocular lens (Continued on pg. 12)

Vision loss in African Americans implant (IOL) to once again focus light rays onto the retina for crisp vision. Patients are back home within just hours and are able to resume most normal activities. Cataract surgery is covered by Medicare as well as state and most insurances.

Vision protection tips  Get regular eye checkups because eye diseases don’t always have symptoms. African Americans should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once every two years. If you have diabetes, you need an eye exam at least once a year. Ask your doctor how often you should have your eyes checked.  Protect your eyes from the sun with sunglasses and a hat.  Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake.  Control your blood pressure and blood sugar.  Eat a balanced diet high in healthy nutrients (like fruits and green leafy vegetables) and low in fat and sugar.
