Vera LeBlanc celebrates 100th Birthday with 'stroll down memory lane'

On Saturday July 16, 2022, Vera LeBlanc celebrated her 100th Birthday by “going down memory lane.” Vera's first stop was Mount Moriah Bap tist Church where she has been a member since 1995. Vera was greeted by Pastor Patrick and 1st Lady Pat Greer where she received a proclamation from Governor Tony Evers. Cards and gifts were also presented to her from members of the church. The second stop was at Clinton Rose Park where the members of the North Central Service Club (NCSC) had a short program. A proclama tion from the Common Council, roses, cards and gifts were presented to her by the members. Vera has been a member of the NCSC since 1971. Her third stop was Dineen Park where family and friends were awaiting her arrival. A proclamation from Congresswoman Gwen Moore was pre sented to her along with cards and gifts, followed by a short program of comments from family and friends. Food and cake were served. Members of the family came from Atlanta, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Philadel phia, Texas, Virginia and Washington D.C., to help Vera celebrate her special day. Vera is called “Sunshine” because she brought some sunshine everywhere she went. A comment was made: Isn’t it wonderful to have a person in your family to live a century, and has lived to see the first black President Barack Obama. Vera said, "This was the best day of my life, to see all my family, friends, church and club members, but most of all, my great grandchildren."

Reed said he doesn't think Hamilton's growth behind the scenes is enough to let him lead an office dedicated to preventing violence.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently announced that Letters of Intent are being accepted through September 2, 2022 for the Preserving Black Churches grant, a project of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund. The grants, which can range from $50,000 to $200,000, are intended to preserve Black houses of worship (with either active or non-active congregations) and to advance ongoing preservation activities through capital projects, project planning, programming and interpretation, organizational capacity building and operations, endowment and financial sustainability. Historic Black churches, nonprofit organizations and public agencies are eligible to apply. More information is available at: https://savingplaces.org/ black-churches. The Milwaukee Preservation Alliance is encouraging interested persons to reach out to their organization for assistance with applications, letters of support or otherwise. More information on The Milwaukee Preservation Alliance can be found at https:// milwaukeepreservationalliance.org or by telephoning 1-414-220-0530.

"Appointing an individual who has admitted to using physical violence towards their child to oversee an of fice that leads violence pre vention for the city is not vi olence prevention nor is it an act of accountability," Reed wrote.Reed met with WISN 12 News on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, following his resigna tion."When I think about my personal and professional values and principles, I can not work under or work in tandem with an individual or administration that clearly has come out and said, 'We really do not put a high stake and value on child safety and well being,'" Reed said.

"(It was) a reality that I had to go through. A learning ex perience that I had to grow through and I think we bring our life experiences to every position that we take," Ham ilton said. "I brought that ex perience to my representation of the first aldermanic dis trict. I brought that growth to understanding how to help families and I will bring that to this position. I think that there are many people in our community that thought like I thought in that time peri od, but I've satisfied every thing that was necessary of that. My family is successful in growing and I think I can help families grow through that as well."

The chairperson of the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sex ual Assault has announced hisJermaineresignation.Reed said on Facebook he was leaving the position because of Mayor Cavalier Johnson's appoint ment of Ashanti Hamilton as director of the city's Office of Violence Prevention (OVP).

In 2009, Hamilton, who was a Milwaukee alder man, admitted to hitting his 6-year-old daughter with a plastic"Responsiblehanger. parenting re quires a parent to engage in discipline. I chose the form of discipline that was not wise," Hamilton said at the time. He entered a no-contest plea in court in 2009. The judge ruled if he stayed out of trouble for a year, the felony child abuse charge would be dropped, which it was.In a press conference on Monday, August 15, 2022, Hamilton addressed the 2009 child abuse case.

"I don't believe in my heart that he's continued to be abusive to his child. It proba bly was a turning point in his life," Reed said. "What I'm saying is from 2009 to 2022, where have you been visibly at? What platforms, what spaces have you created or have you joined to say, 'Hey, I am now an advocate of sup porting child safety and well being'."Hamilton is replacing Ar nitta Holliman, who was recently fired as director of OVP.

In 1978, Congress passed the Presidential Records Act in the aftermath of the Wa tergate scandal. The Act clar ified who actually owns re cords and documents (writ ten and electronic) created or handled by the U.S. presi dent and vice president after they leave office. The Act was put in place in the interest of national security after it was found that former President Richard Nixon tried to de liberately destroy written and audio-taped records from his presidency that eventu ally implicated him in the burglary of the Democratic National Committee head quarters and led to his 1974 resignation from office in dis grace. The Presidential Records Act became law on January 20, 1981 – Inauguration Day -- and all presidents since Ronald Reagan have abided by the law, except Donald Trump. This apparent defi ance of the law, after taking an oath to uphold the law in the interest of our coun try and the Constitution, begs the question, ‘What was Trump thinking?’

One would like to believe that someone performing as President of the Unit ed States would know the limits of his authority and privilege, and if not, would have the sense to ask some one for guidance…but may be not, in Trump’s case. Af ter all, the U.S. presidency is the first time in his career that Donald Trump’s actions were required to pass public scrutiny, and required him to relinquish power and author ity to someone other than himself. Prior to his 2015 venture into politics to run for president, public service was nowhere on his resume. Instead, he was the owner of a privately held family busi ness with no shareholders or board members to hold him accountable, right or wrong. In addition, while in office, Trump never divested any of his business interests and placed them in a blind trust to avoid the appearance of using the presidency for his own personal gain, to avoid the creation of a conflict of interest.Whether inspired by igno rance or defiance, President Trump’s latest disregard for convention has serious con sequences. Among them are putting him in direct viola tion of the Federal Espionage Act, a level of misconduct that could add “felon” to his list of accomplishments. It remains to be seen whether this breach of protocol will continue to escalate to that point. But in the meantime, Mr. Trump might want to take a refresher course in what constitutes proper be havior for a former president. Who knows, he just might learn something.

What was Trump thinking?

Just when we thought we had momentarily quelled the tempest that is former Presi dent Donald Trump, anoth er chapter of questionable and possibly illegal behavior cropped up with his name all over it. This time, it’s the in appropriate handling of doc uments produced during the Trump presidency that have ended up in Trump’s private possession, instead of with the National Archives where theyAfterbelong.months of trying to get Trump to return the doc uments – using formal re quests, subpoenas and other legal means, which the for mer president had chosen to ignore – the FBI had to get a warrant from a federal judge to remove the documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and return them to the National Archives. In response, the former presi dent now has alleged that his rights under the 4th Amend ment against unreasonable search and seizure have been violated.Withhis continued lack of cooperation, the former pres ident left the FBI no choice but to recover the documents by whatever means necessary, in the interest of preserving national security.

Arthur Reid, Jr., Founder Sheila President/C.E.O.Reid,

Andre Carter is proof of the importance of holding on to your dreams. Carter was raised as one of five chil dren by a single mother in the Chicago projects. Now Carter's two adult children are on the staff of the school she founded in 2004. In less than 20 years, enrollment at Carter’s Christian Academy has grown from 21 kinder garten-age students to 285 in grades K4-12th.

“My education helped me to feel confident exploring new situations,” Joshua said. “One of the principles that defines the Carter Family is to help others position them selves to be successful. In ad dition to being the boys’ bas ketball coach, I am also a role model and mentor to many of them. Being a good role model and mentor is even more important to me than being a winning basketball coach.”Every student at Carter’s Christian Academy is special and will have numerous op portunities to develop their talents, according to Andre Carter.“They will all be some body,” she said, “because we are transforming lives for eternity.”

The Carter Family pauses underneath a “Tree of Knowledge” sculpture while preparing classrooms for the new school year at Carter’s Christian Academy on August 23, 2022. “I have this title, but it also comes with a responsibility, Keerah said. “Pageant queens are public speakers with a sash and crown.” Keerah had previously entered a pageant and felt underwhelmed by the expe rience. Andre Carter encour aged her daughter to enter one more pageant. “Mom really encouraged me to give it another try,” Keerah said. “It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Working here gave me the freedom to pursue mod eling and attend modeling classes.”Keerah’s responsibilities as America's Ms. 2022 involve traveling around the United States serving as an ambassa dor for the pageant. Keerah said she loves traveling and feels very fortunate to have a job and the opportunities to visit new places. Both children feel a strong connection to Africa. Car ter’s Christian Academy be lieves that service and mis sion work are an important part of a well-educated child and Andre said the school re cently established a satellite school in Ghana and a day care center within a Kenyan women's prison. Keerah has held modeling workshops in Ghana, while Joshua recently joined the staff at Carter’s Christian Academy after playing pro fessional basketball in Spain and then Kenya for two years after graduating from college.

“Not long after I started home schooling, my pastor, Floydia Armon, encouraged me to develop an outside in come by doing child care in my home,” she said. “This was what first opened the door for me to help other families that had a need.”

“I always had a desire to start a school as a young girl growing up,” she said, “but then I got married, started a family and took a job as a medical secretary.” Soon after the birth of her second child, Joshua, Carter decided to quit her job as a medical secretary and home school her two children.

When the State of Wiscon sin’s Department of Public Instruction allowed entre preneurs to operate private school choice programs, Car ter said she was ready to pur sue her deferred childhood dream. Her two adult children are both are on the school staff. Daughter Keerah works as an administrative assistant. On February 20, 2022 she was named The United States of America’s Ms. 2022 in Las Vegas. In addition to serving as the administrative assis tant, she also teaches courses on fashion, modeling, beauty etiquette and pageantry. She also counsels female students at the school.

Lower prescription drug prices, including a cap on insulin prices. In his first term, Gov. Evers cut income taxes by 15 percent for most Wisconsin families. Many children have already gone back to school and there are lots of exciting transitions happening. Change is always good but the weather chang ing, in conjunction with be ing introduced to new germs can spell disaster for your child’s immune system.

Although the common cold might catch up with your child eventually there are a few things you can do to keep the spread of those back-to-school germs to a minimum.

2. Daily multivitamins Multivitamins are a great way to make sure your child gets all of the nutrients they might miss during the day but they also can help sup port a healthy immune sys tem. Taking a multivitamin every morning became a part of my morning routine with my daughter when she started daycare and so far the coughs and sniffles have been kept at bay. For younger children, you might have an easier time with liquid multivitamins. Zarabee’s makes a few natu ral vitamin supplements for babies and toddlers. For old er children, I would suggest gummy or chewable vita mins. These are sold in a vari ety of flavors at pretty much every major retailer. Check with your pediatri cian before starting anything but for the most part, these over-the-counter supple ments can do wonders for your child’s overall health and wellness. I also love the fact that they help my notori ously picky eater get all of the nutrients she may miss from her strict diet.

Most parents know that when your child is sick it’s only a matter of time before you and the rest of the house get it too. I know I don’t only speak for myself when I say, with 75 percent of the year already behind us sick days are getting scarce so, ain’t no body got time for that!

3. Healthy before and af ter-school snacks Even if you give your child a vitamin each day, you should still try to make sure they are getting as much nutrition as possible from their meals. This can be a challenge since kids, especially toddlers, are notoriously picky eaters.

4. Setting a bedtime Children really thrive with a consistent routine in their daily lives. Adding a desig nated nap time and a set bed time can also do wonders for your child’s health. Making sure they get a good night’s rest will ensure that their bodies have enough energy to fight off germs they may come into contact with so these germs won’t progress intoSettingcolds.a bedtime for your kids can also do wonders for parents. The time in be tween your child’s bedtime and your own can be a really great opportunity to decom press from the day, do some last-minute cleaning, and just be unbothered!

With back-to-school sea son also comes the flu season, the contagious virus that can be very dangerous for chil dren. The CDC recommends that children over the age of 6 months get vaccinated ev ery year. This can be very im portant to children who are in daycare, preschool or grade school as they are exposed to many different germs from their classmates, teachers and other parents. I know from my own ex periences and research on line that many Black people simply do not trust the flu shot and avoid it each year. I myself have only been vac cinated while pregnant but I generally do not go out for a flu shot each year. Now that I have a young child in day care I plan to vaccinate her. The benefits of avoiding the dangerous sickness far out weigh whatever social stigma or paranoia I’m currently op erating under. The flu shot doesn’t pro tect your child against the common cold but it will help fight off the sickness that could leave them feeling crummy for weeks. We parents are facing an uphill battle as far as germs go this fall, but at least we know that there are some things we can do to arm ourselves. Our main goal should be being proactive about preventing the colds, and if we cannot avoid them, at least be pro active about treating them while stopping the spread to other people. Good luck out there, parents! Godspeed!

5. Getting a flu shot

Luckily there are a lot of healthy before- and af ter-school snacks that boost the immune system. If you can’t get your child to eat things like kale or mush rooms, you can always keep things simple by offering them oatmeal or yogurt at breakfast.Thesefoods are rich in pro biotics and antioxidant qual ities that fight against the flu. If those options don’t work, most children love apples and oranges. Easy to prepare and even pack with lunch, apples and oranges are full of fiber and vitamins that help your child’s overall health daily.

1. Front door decontamina tion While at daycare or school, and during after-school ac tivities, your children come into contact with many different people and their germs. A good way to keep those germs as close to the outside world as possible is to do some decontaminating as soon as your kids enter your home. The simplest thing you can do is have them remove their shoes and wash their hands before eating or lounging around the Changinghouse.intoclean house clothes or even pajamas right away can also slow the spread of germs left on uniforms or school clothes that have been worn and played in all day. I would also suggest imple menting a schedule for keep ing backpacks, lunch bags and smart devices clean. All types of germs can live inside of these bags and on these surfaces, so it’s best to clean them regularly. Try Lysol or a full wash of the bags week ly. A daily wipe-down of cell phones and tablets can also be beneficial to keep away cold-causing germs.
