Outreach Community Health Centers hosts U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin for 'Maternal Round Table'

On Friday June 4, 2021, Outreach Community Health Centers (OCHC) hosted a Maternal Round Table with U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin at their 210 W. Capitol Drive location. The event included conversation with mothers, public health stakeholders, and community leaders on the need to reverse the trend of rising maternal mortality rates, lose health disparities that put Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities and their kids at greater risk of adverse health outcomes, and improved maternal health outcomes in Wisconsin.

In the last 25 years, while pregnancy-related mortality ratios fell 44 percent around the world, the American maternal mortality rate increased: moms are now more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes in the United States than in any other high-income country in the world. The situation is even worse for Black women, who are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from giving birth than their white counterparts.

Brew City Cowboys Resource Center hosts community barbecue and trail ride

On Saturday, June 5, 2021, the Brew City Cowboys Resource Center hosted a community barbecue and trail ride for members and friends of the organization. The cookout took place at the Paluso Guest Farm located in Kewaskum, about an hour north of Milwaukee. It was a day full of horseback riding, great food, and friendship.

The Black Cowboys spent much of the time taking care of their horses, and participating in the fun. Even with temperatures in the 90's, attendees enjoyed a wide variety of food, conversation and interaction with the many horses on the ranch.

The Brew City Cowboys tagline "We Ride For The Kids" was also on display, with guided rides for children from the city to help inspire their passion for equestrianism. The Milwaukee Times hosts first 'Summer Mixer' The Milwaukee Times held its first Summer Mixer on Thursday, June 5, 2021 at Garfields 502 on a beautiful spring night and it was a huge success!

More than 25 Black business owners and professionals including Kelli Macon of My Choice Wisconsin, Karen James of Creations & Design by KCJ, Kendrick Watkins, author and owner of So You Can Write Publications, LLC, and Arletta Slaughter Weddings & Events were in attendance.

Deshea Agee and his assistant Diana of the Historic King Drive BID graciously sponsored all three Summer Mixers and joined The Milwaukee Times' Lynda Jackson-Conyers, Publisher and Carmen Murguia, Marketing Manager.

Black Music Month: The Great Ladies of Jazz You can't celebrate Black Music Month without mentioning the 'Great Ladies of Jazz.' They are the pioneers and inspiration for many of today's artists like Beyoncé and Chaka Khan. And their phenomenal voices have given us some of our most classic American songs, that are still sung by artists today.

So let's learn more about our 'Great Ladies of Jazz.

Ella Fitzgerald Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917 – June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer, sometimes referred to as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella.

In 1993, after a career of nearly 60 years, she gave her last public performance.

Three years later, she died at the age of 79. Her accolades included fourteen Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Billie Holiday Eleanora Fagan (April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959), known professionally as Billie Holiday, was an American jazz and swing music singer.

Nicknamed "Lady Day" by her friend and music partner Lester Young, Holiday had an innovative influence on jazz music and pop singing.

She was known for her vocal delivery and improvisational skills.

Holiday began singing in nightclubs in Harlem, where she was heard by producer John Hammond, who liked her voice. She signed a recording contract with Brunswick in 1935. Holiday had mainstream success on labels such as Columbia and Decca. By the late 1940s, however, she was beset with legal troubles and drug abuse. Nina Simone Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003), known professionally as Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist. Her music spanned a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.

The sixth of eight children born to a poor family in Tryon, North Carolina, Simone initially aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. To make a living, Simone started playing piano at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She changed her name to "Nina Simone" to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play "the devil's music"

It’s a good time to be a college student. Whereas students from less than two decades ago had to schlep to the library to research encyclopedias every time they had an assignment, students today don’t even have to attend a brick-and-mortar college, if they don’t want to.

The internet provides a vast amount of resources for students to navigate their higher education. These websites help students learn more about degree programs, learn about their future professions, study for tests, choose which professor to take classes from, and so much more.

Here’s our list of 15 of the most helpful websites out there for college students:

1. Quizlet Gone are the days of spending hours writing out notecards and getting a cramped hand in the meantime. Quizlet helps you study for literally any class you may be taking by offering simple, free learning tools like flashcards, games, and more.

8. Habitica Life in and out of college is made a whole lot easier by forming good habits. Thankfully, in today’s world, there’s an app to help you get there.

Dianne Reeves Dianne Reeves was born in Detroit, Michigan, into a musical family. Her father sang, her mother played trumpet, her uncle is bassist Charles Burrell, and her cousin is George Duke. Her father died when she was two years old, and she was raised in Denver, Colorado, by her mother, Vada Swanson, and maternal family. In 1971 she started singing and playing piano. She was a member of her high school band, and while performing at a convention in Chicago was noticed by trumpeter Clark Terry, who invited her to sing with him. She studied classical voice at the University of Colorado.

Reeves moved to Los Angeles, where she sang and recorded with a number of well known artists. Later, she would move to New York City and from 1983 to 1986 toured with Harry Belafonte.

She signed with Blue Note in 1987 and that year her

James's powerful, deep, earthy voice bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Grammy Hall of

Fame in 1999 and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. Rolling Stone magazine ranked James number 22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time; she was also ranked number 62 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

Billboard's 2015 list of The 35 Greatest R&B Artists Of All Time includes James, whose "gutsy, take-no-prisoner vocals colorfully interpreted everything from blues and R&B/soul to rock n’roll, jazz and gospel".

James was diagnosed with leukemia in early 2011. The illness became terminal, she died on January 20, 2012.

Dr. Bashir Easter: Our COVID-19 survey. We are surveying all participants about the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with our COVID-19 Participant Experience (COPE) survey. The survey includes physical and mental health, employment and income, and substance use questions.

The impact of COVID-19 can be found around the world, but it isn’t affecting everyone equally. First, antibody testing. We have tested samples from participants who joined in early 2020 to help researchers better understand the origins and spread of COVID-19 in the U.S.
