AACCW hosts 2nd Annual Breakfast of Champions On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 The African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (AACCW) hosted its 2nd Annual Breakfast of Champions in the Grand Ballroom of the Pfister Hotel. The event hosted more than 400 guest, who gathered to honor the 2017 Business Champion Brewers Community Foundation president Cecelia Gore; and 2017 Strategic Partners Associated Bank, BMO Harris Bank, Milwaukee Bucks and Northwestern Mutual. WISN 12 News anchor Melinda Davenport served as MC for this event and the keynote speaker was National Black McDonald's Operators Association (NBMOA) chairman and CEO Roland Parrish. Small Business Administration presents Minority Small Business Champion Award to Ralph Hollmon On Friday, May 5, 2017 the Small Business Administration and SCORE presented the 32nd Annual Small Business Awards Breakfast at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. Among those honored at this year's awards presentation was former Milwaukee Urban League president and CEO Ralph Hollmon, for his work advocating in the small minority business community. Initially, he recognized the importance of providing minority small businesses access to contracting dollars. Both with the Wisconsin Department of Administration and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, he put in place programs that promoted minority business, allowing them to grow and gain contracts. Ralph recognized that education and networking are the catalysts to improvement and growth, partnered with local institutions to offer classes and coaching to businesses on all subjects, from financial literacy to the intricacies of contracting.

Mt. Vernon Baptist Church hosts annual Women's Fellowship Breakfast On Saturday, May 6, 2017 Mt. Vernon Baptist Church hosted their annual Women's Fellowship Breakfast at the Holiday Inn Milwaukee West Riverfront. The theme for the breakfast was "The Classic Christian Woman," and the guest speaker and singer was local, up and coming gospel sensation, Ashlee Jasper, who offered up words of encouragement. The event was hosted by Mt. Vernon First Lady Joyce Jackson, and featured praise dances, poetry readings, fellowshipping, and spiritual songs.

Back to Black: Black woman wins Miss USA again For the second year in a row, the Miss USA crown went to a Black woman from the District of Columbia.

Miss DC, 25-year-old, Kára McCullough became the 66th Miss USA during the Sunday, May 14, 2017 pageant, with Miss New Jersey Chhavi Verg named the runner-up and Miss Minnesota Meridith Gould the second runner-up.

Among the top five — Minnesota, Illinois, South Carolina, New Jersey and District of Columbia — four were women of color, which didn’t go unnoticed, with social media celebrating the #blackgirlmagic on the Miss USA stage.

As she joked earlier in the competition, McCullough hoped to win the crown to give DC “back to back” wins “like Drake.” Miss DC 2016 Deshauna Barber won the competition last year. Before passing on the crown Sunday night, Barber shared an emotional story about her mother’s death shortly after she won Miss USA. McCullough works as a scientist for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. She earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry, with a concentration in radiochemistry from South Carolina State University in 2013.

She was widely praised during the Miss USA pageant for sporting her natural curly hair, as opposed to the trend of smoother locks, something she admitted she was

initially nervous about.

“I didn’t know if people were going to accept it…if anyone was going to be receptive to it at all,” she said in a post interview.

Naples-born McCullough won over judges Julianne Hough, Ashley Graham and Terrence Jenkins with her beauty and her answers to questions that covered subjects in healthcare, social media, women’s rights and issues facing teenagers.

One of the standout questions was about the hot button topic right now: healthcare. When asked if she thinks affordable healthcare is a right or a privilege for U.S. citizens, McCullough said it was a “definitely” a privilege. Her answer was met with mixed reactions.

“As a government employee, I am granted healthcare.

And I see firsthand that for

one to have healthcare, you need to have jobs,” she said.

“So therefore, we need to continue to cultivate this environment that we’re given the opportunities to have healthcare as well as jobs to all the American citizens worldwide.”

“As a woman scientist in the government, I’d like to lately transpose the word feminism to equalism,” she said when asked what she thinks feminism is and if she considers herself a feminist.

The audience loudly cheered her response, according to the Washington Post. “…One thing I’m gonna say, though, is women, we are just as equal as men when it comes to opportunity in the workplace,” she continued.

“The difference between a dreamer and a visionary is that a dreamer has his eyes closed and a visionary has his eyes open. People travel from all over the globe to sightsee our nation’s capital and I’m lucky enough to have these sights in my backyard. I’ve noticed it’s easy to not take advantage of the activities

your city has to offer. So, I challenge everyone to not wait on attending that play at your local theater, going to the art gallery, museum, national park, restaurant, etc.

Life is too precious and short to not take advantage today!”

McCullough, one of five contestants who immigrated to the U.S. as youngsters and are now citizens, took the crown from Army officer Deshauna Barber, also from the District of Columbia.

Being Frank

Mother’s daily their inception.

I know people scream about unfit mothers. It is true that there are many women who shouldn’t be around grown people and much less having children.

Since these women are here and have offspring they are mothers. What defines a great or unfit mother? The answer is in the child’s perception. It is easy to step outside and judge a person.

The ultimate decider on if a mother is unfit or great is the child who was raised by the woman.

Over the years I have heard millions of complaints about fathers. In the African American community the dysfunctional father is commonplace. I have rarely heard anyone rant about how inept his or her mother is or was. Mothers have always held a special place in even the most hardened criminal’s heart. Fathers not so much.

With this in mind stop the

charade about only celebrating mom on one day in May. The majority of people celebrate their mother daily, in some form or fashion. Why not make it official?

Just think of the impact acknowledging mothers on a daily basis would have on society. The fear and respect mothers have on children is immeasurable. Sadly these two factors are forgotten daily and this is a great part of

the mess the world has come to. A son will act a fool and do crazy things to get into trouble. In most instances the acts he has committed will be glazed over by the father. Why? Father did the same things when he was of similar age. The whole equation changes when mama comes around. Notice I changed from mother to mama. This change of wording is a black thing.

How many of you grown ups remember dreading someone calling or telling your mama on you? I know for a fact if someone had threatened to call my father I would have laughed in his or her face. The laughter would have changed to tears or thoughts of violence if they talked about calling my mama. No way no how was that going to happen. I’m grown and if someone was threatening to tell my mother something I wouldn’t be scared but it would be awhile before I called mama. You never can tell what mama might do so it’s better to play it safe.

This is why the celebration of mother’s daily can change society over night. No one wants their mother mad or fussing at them. With this in mind people may act and make better decisions. If celebrating mother will make people stop and think about what they are doing or about to do, then Congress needs to pass a new law. The effects of Mother’s Daily would have an immediate positive impact from the hood to Beverly Hills. This celebration would be easy because it couldn’t happen to a better person.

Mother’s Day has passed.

The flowers and gifts that people shower upon their favorite mother are put away.

The impact a mother has on a child is immeasurable. If the former statement is true, then how can the celebration of mother be just one day?

Hence, I have decided to change the celebration from Mother’s Day to Mother’s Daily.

A mother is usually the person a child falls back on whenever things get tough in life. In many instances the mother is the one who shapes and molds a child’s mentality. In many one-parent families, the one parent is usually the mother. I know people who scream "my father this and that." This is beautiful in its sentiment.

But don’t be foolish. If your mother didn’t allow it, you wouldn’t be on this planet.

Many are here because the mother wanted them here because daddy was against

Former U.S. Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden highlights 'MATC Promise' at Bradley Tech Dr. Jill Biden, former Second Lady of the United States (2009 – 2017), visited Milwaukee on Friday, May 12, to keynote the Milwaukee Area Technical College Spring Commencement. She also celebrated free community college programs like the MATC Promise during a visit to Milwaukee Public Schools’ Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade High School.

Biden toured Bradley Tech, along with MATC President Dr. Vicki J. Martin and Dr. Martha Kanter, the Executive Director of the College Promise Campaign and former U.S. Under Secretary of Education. They met with leaders and students participating in the MATC Promise, and highlighted the crucial education pathway from Bradley Tech to MATC.

Milwaukee native graduates from West Point Chasen Van Brown entered West Point’s grueling world of 6:30 a.m. reveille, 60-pound packs and rigorous course loads four years ago.

Cadet Brown is now preparing to fling his cap at graduation this month, marking a significant accomplishment at this storied academy.

The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point, Army, is a four-year coeducational federal service academy in West Point, New York located 50 miles north of New York City; it was originally established as a fort that sits

tus upon graduation. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each July, with about 1,000 cadets graduating. As all cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants upon graduation, military and leadership education is nested with academic instruction.

Chasen shared, “It’s surreal to realize that I am walking in the same footsteps as Henry Ossian Flipper, a former slave, and the first African American to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1877. I Chasen Van Brown could not have completed this daunting mission without the support and prayers three years of reserve sta- from my family and friends which was priceless.”

Graduates of the academy refer to themselves as “The Long Gray Line,” a phrase taken from the academy’s tra-

ditional hymn “The Corps.”

The Academy has produced 65,000 alumni, including two Presidents of the United States: Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

A total of 76 graduates have been awarded the Medal of Honor. West Point has produced 18 NASA astronauts, including five who went to the moon.

After graduation on May 27, 2017, Chasen will be commissioned as a second lieutenant. Chasen’s first assignment is to complete the Armor Officers Basic Course, Ranger School and Airborne School at Fort Benning in Georgia. Following, Chasen will be stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, with the 1-509th Infantry Regiment for three years.

High blood pressure linked to racially segregated neighborhoods Living in racially segregated neighborhoods is associated with a rise in the blood pressure of black adults, while moving away from segregated areas is associated with a decrease — and significant enough to lead to reductions in heart attacks and strokes, a National Institutes of Health-funded study has found.

The findings, reported in the May issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, offer further evidence that policies to reduce residential racial segregation may have meaningful health benefits, especially for African Americans, who suffer the highest rates of hypertension of any group in the United States.

Residential segregation, the separation of groups into different neighborhoods by race, has long been identified as a major cause of health disparities between blacks and whites. This is the first study to explore whether increases or decreases in residential segregation specifi-

cally affect blood pressure.

“Our study suggests that the stress and the inadequate access to health-promoting resources associated with segregation may play a role in these increases in blood pressure,” said David Goff, M.D., director of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of NIH. “While stress raises blood pressure, access to health-promoting resources, such as full service grocery stores, recreation centers, and health care clinics, is critical to keeping blood pressure at healthier levels.”

Partly funded by NHLBI, the researchers examined blood pressure readings for 2280 blacks who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study. The project focused on adults aged 18-30, who were initially screened in 1985 and 1986 and then re-examined several times over the next 25 years.

Ten ways to control high blood pressure 1. Lose extra pounds and watch your waistline Blood pressure often increases as weight increases. Being overweight also can cause disrupted breathing while you sleep (sleep apnea), which further raises your blood pressure.

7. Cut back on caffeine The role caffeine plays in blood pressure is still debated. Caffeine can raise blood pressure by as much as 10 mm Hg in people who rarely consume it, but there is little to no strong effect on blood pressure in habitual coffee drinkers.

2. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity — at least 30 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). It's important to be consistent because if you stop exercising, your blood pressure can rise again.

8. Reduce your stress Chronic stress is an important contributor to high blood pressure. Occasional stress also can contribute to high blood pressure if you react to stress by eating unhealthy food, drinking alcohol or smoking.

3. Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.

4. Reduce sodium in your diet Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. 5. Limit the amount of alcohol you drink Alcohol can be both good and bad for your health. In small amounts, it can potentially lower your blood pressure by 2 to 4 mm Hg. 6. Quit smoking Each cigarette you smoke increases your blood pressure for many minutes after you finish.

Quitting smoking helps your blood pressure return to normal. People who quit smoking, regardless of age, have substantial increases in life expectancy.

9. Monitor your blood pressure at home and see your doctor regularly Home monitoring can help you keep tabs on your blood pressure, make certain your lifestyle changes are working, and alert you and your doctor to potential health complications.

Blood pressure monitors are available widely and without a prescription.

Talk to your doctor about home monitoring before you get started.

10. Get support Supportive family and friends can help improve your health. They may encourage you to take care of yourself, drive you to the doctor's office or embark on an exercise program with you to keep your blood pressure low.

If you find you need support beyond your family and friends, consider joining a support group. This may put you in touch with people who can give you an emotional or morale boost and who can offer practical tips to cope with your condition.

These links persisted even after researchers took into account the participants’ marital status, body mass index, smoking history, physical activity levels, and the socio-economic status of their communities.

Neighborhood segregation was categorized as high, medium or low based on a scale that compares the percentage of black residents in a neighborhood to the surrounding area. The study found that when their neighborhoods were more segregated, the participants experienced small but statistically significant increases in systolic blood pressure. The opposite was also true. Reductions in segregation correlated with a notable decrease in blood pressure.

“The Broken Ladder: How Inequality Affects the Way We Think, Live, and Die” by Keith Payne He got more.

There was a time in your life when just noticing that was reason to throw a tantrum. It was enough to make any adult near you want to run away. But now that you’re all grown up, “He got more” means more – and in the new book “The Broken Ladder” by Keith Payne, you’ll see how it might affect your life.

Airplane kerfuffles are hardly news these days, but Keith Payne sees them differently: they are, he says, linked to status hierarchy.

First-class has wider, plusher seats while coach fliers must cram themselves into tiny cushions and share an armrest. Whether they know it or not, that causes envy; in fact, air rage increases, say researchers, when people are forced to see this inequality.

Add a delayed or canceled flight, and things escalate to violence.

The thing is that flights aren’t cheap. Just the fact that someone is on a plane says a lot about their income but when people perceive inequality, they “feel poor and act poor, even when they’re not.” Even so, it’s true that the rich do get richer, while the poorest people have

Oh, my, but the first threefifths of “The Broken Ladder” is an eye-opener. Payne imagines a ladder as a metaphor for inequality. The higher the rung an individual reaches, the better their status and income, health, safety, and future. Racial inequality – which is “qualitatively different,” no matter how big a person’s paycheck is – affects one’s position on the ladder. So does geography, and education, or lack thereof. The lower the rung, the less the person has, monetarily and otherwise.
