Nine Milwaukee female high school seniors received scholarship awards from The North Central Service Club, Inc., during the organization’s 42nd Annual Scholarship Luncheon on May 7, 2017 at the Radisson Hotel Milwaukee West, 2303 North Mayfair Road. The theme for the event was “Power is not just in the Leader’s hands; it is also in my hands,” and featured Milwaukee Area Technical College School of Technology and Applied Sciences Dean Dorothy Walker-Cooper as keynote speaker. The young women who received scholarships this year were Reniqua Brown (Washington H.S.); Keziah Carter (Bradley Tech); Aleeya Conway (Riverside University H.S.); Jamie Crawford (Milwaukee High School of the Arts); Zariah Franklin (James Madison Academic Campus); Siarah Jones (Rufus King International H.S.); Adrianne Jordan (North Division H.S.); Zarieanna McCoy (Hamilton H.S.); Jakizisha McKinney-Bell (Milwaukee School of Languages); Fatima Mohamed (Pulaski H.S.); Ampire Ntbala (South Division H.S.). MHSI hosts annual staff luncheon and awards ceremony

On Tuesday, May 2, 2017, Milwaukee Health Services, Inc. (MHSI) hosted their annual "2017 All Staff Meeting" at Greater New Birth Church. Besides discussing last year's business and achievements and setting goals for the upcoming year, MHSI honored five employees who have been with the organization for more than twenty years. These individuals were honored for their service and dedication to MHSI's mission; to provide accessible, quality primary and related health care services to Milwaukee residents, with continuing emphasis on medically underserved families and individuals.

Milwaukee Public Schools hosts '2017 All Schools Alumni Reunion' On Thursday, May 4, 2017 Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) hosted their annual "All Schools Reunion" at the Italian Conference Center, 631 E. Chicago Street. The event was free to all MPS alumni from all current and previous existing MPS high schools.

The reunion was a chance for former MPS students to reconnect with classmates and make new connections as they enjoyed refreshments and entertainment. All members of the MPS “forever family” were invited! The school with the most alumni in attendance received special recognition!! Wisconsin looks to change the way funds are distributed as part of Medicaid

The Affordable Care Act has not been repealed, but on May 4 the State of Wisconsin applied for permission to change the way it distributes federally provided funds under Medicaid, part of President Barack Obama’s signature legislation to increase access to health care to more than 24 million Americans.

Linda Seemeyer, secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, gave a brief presentation of the proposed changes to Medicaid which is known as BadgerCare Plus in Wisconsin.

“Federal flexibility is needed to relieve Wisconsin of burdensome bureaucracy and red tape. The goal [of the changes] is to help people get healthy and back into the workplace,” Seemeyer said. The presentation was part of a brief Power Point presentation at a luncheon and panel forum sponsored by the Public Policy Forum on May 3 at the Italian Community Center.

According to Seemeyer, the Walker Administration is seeking permission from President Trump to 1) limit Medicaid reimbursements

for single, childless adults to a maximum of two years, except in extraordinary medical circumstances, 2) require screening for illicit drug use by beneficiaries, 3) charge a modest income-adjusted premium, 4) require a healthrisk assessment to determine premium rates, and 5) lowering premiums for healthy adults, while increasing the cost of health care coverage to the elderly and those with chronic, pre-existing medical conditions. The new plan would also expand residential treatment coverage to all BadgerCare recipients.

Seemeyer said the Walker Administration hopes to have the revised BadgerCare Plus plan operational in time for the next two-year state budget cycle which begins in 2019. Public hearings on the proposed changes closed May 1, but it is still possible to submit public comments on the proposal changes.

Jacobson said the plan to replace the current healthcare subsidies with tax credits would be harmful to those in low-income tax brackets. Although tax cuts and subsidies may seem similar, she said, an individual's or family’s income is often low enough that they do not earn enough income to claim the full tax deduction. She estimated that if the current plan went though as proposed, at least 200,000 Wisconsin residents would lose the health care coverage that they gained as a result of the Affordable Care Act.

Wisconsin African American Women’s Center visits Chicago’s Black Ensemble Theater to see

Of even more concern to Jacobson was the aging of the Wisconsin population.

She said that the percentage of Wisconsin residents older than 50 is expected to increase by 40 percent within the next 30 years. That increase will put a severe strain on the delivery of health services, panel members said.

Building Your Wealth Why aren’t you wealthy?

Some time ago we published a column entitled Wealth Creation which introduced a simple program that if followed would result in the reader becoming financially secure. The problem is that this is not a get rich quick plan as so many other plans claim to be. So, let’s repeat the fact that if something seems too good to be true it most probably is.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. However, when you are willing to do some simple things you can in fact become wealthy. The problem is you are not entitled to wealth just because you think you deserve it. What you will discover is that when followed this get rich slowly program will actually work for you.

The first task is to list your debts and assets. This personal balance sheet will tell you where you stand today financially. What do I mean by assets? List everything you own that has value: home, car, furniture, savings, retirement account and anything else. Then list everything you

Knowing this is very important because it provides specific knowledge that helps you gain control ,and no matter how bad it might be, knowing where you are is better that not knowing. When you realize that 40 percent of people living in the USA do not have $500 available for an emergency, you are not alone.

Dedication to mothers (Part 1) Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day most commonly falls on the second Sunday in May and is observed traditionally by presenting mothers with flowers, cards and other gifts.

This month, this column will feature notes from children who were asked to comment on the statement: "Why My Mother Is So Special." This writer is pleased to offer this selection from Victoria in celebration of her mother: *** Mother’s Day. A day to give back, to reflect, and to say thank you to the most wonderful woman in the world. It is hard to put into words why my mom is so special because the list goes on and on.

However, if I were to sum up the main reasons why I think she is so amazing, I would say that she is selfless, courageous, self-made, and my best friend.

My mom is notorious for putting others in front of herself, especially her kids.

She is working two jobs to support me in college, my brothers at home, and even have a little spending money here and there. She works herself crazy so that we can have the best life possible.

For that, I will forever be grateful. What she does not

They do great things for us everyday, they whisper in our ears, they even hold us in their hearts when we are filled with all our fears.

They are always there to give a hug, and try to make us smile.

Seven MPS high schools named tops in the state The Washington Post has named Milwaukee Public Schools Rufus King International School as the best high school in the state according to its America’s Most Challenging High Schools list, which was released this week.

“Congratulations to the high schools recognized in this prestigious report,” said MPS Superintendent Darienne B. Driver. “Our high schools continue to work hard to improve student achievement and to prepare our students for success. We are honored to have seven of our high schools named among the best in Wisconsin.”

Schools recognized by The Washington Post rank among the top 12 percent in the country. MPS schools on the annual list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools include: • #1 – Rufus King International School • #3 – Milwaukee School of Languages • #13 – Carmen High School of Science and Technology–South • #18 – Ronald Reagan Preparatory High School

Rufus King International School • #22 – Alexander Hamilton High School • #27 – Milwaukee High School of the Arts • #31 – Riverside University High School No other schools in Milwaukee county placed among the top ten schools in Wisconsin. Two MPS schools rank in the top ten in the state.

America’s Most Challenging High Schools ranks schools through an index

formula that’s a simple ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given during a school year, divided by the number of seniors who graduate that year.

In April, Carmen School of Science and Technology–South was named the top school in Wisconsin by U.S. News and World Report. Other MPS schools recognized by the magazine, bringing the

total to four, include Hmong American Peace Academy (HAPA), Rufus King, and Reagan.

Current MPS efforts to improve high schools include: • Advanced Placement: Twelve MPS high schools now offer five or more Advanced Placement (AP) courses, with College Board’s AP Capstone Diploma expanded to five high schools.

• Bridging the Digital Divide: Increased Advanced Placement telepresence course enrollment rose from 30 students in 2015–16 to 175 in 2016–17.

• Credit Recovery: Credit recovery course completion has increased 34 percent from 2015–16 to the current school year. This allows students to put in extra work and retake a course they may have failed previously. In addition, MPS served 630 participants in Saturday Academy credit recovery and accelerated courses so far this year.

• Summer Academy: MPS increased 2016 high school Summer Academy student participation from 1,476 in 2015 to 2,237 in

2016. These numbers include students participating in summer school through the federal GEAR UP grant.

• Workforce Development: In collaboration with community partners, the district expanded and formalized a culinary arts program at four MPS high schools, with hundreds of students enrolled.

• Classroom Technology: Our high schools achieved a 1:1 ratio of Chromebooks-to-students this school year, with 64,000 Chromebooks used by students in all grades in total.

• Early Start: For next school year, MPS has shifted the high school and middle school calendar to early start and early end dates, giving students more time to prepare for college-preparatory ACT and AP tests.

You can feel like you just want this year to be finished so that you can get started on all the new stuff. Your head can be in two different places as you try to finish off the old and get ready for the new.

Here is outlined six simple strategies to help you navigate through this tricky time and stay clear and focused on what you need to get done.

1. Keep track You possibly have a long list of things to do over the next few weeks. My suggestion is to be very clear about which tasks are for this year and which are preparation for the following year. This helps you to keep clear boundaries in your head.

One strategy to enable you separate the lists is to head up two pieces of paper, or use two pages in a journal or your planning folder with this year's date on one and next year on the other. As you think of things to do write each task on the corresponding page. This simple change makes it easier to keep your mind organized.

2. What needs to be done soon? (within the next couple of weeks) 3. What needs to be noted down, but can be left until later?

All of a sudden your long to-do lists seem more manageable because you only really have to focus on what needs to be done right now; however you can be confident that the other important items are written down and won’t be forgotten.

2. Transition well Even though we are very busy at this time of the year I think that spending time transitioning your students into the next year is very important. As school winds down, it can be hard for many students to leave their teachers and friends behind during the holidays. They are used to the routine, and change does not come easily for some. Even though your students are probably looking forward to the summer holiday, losing contact with people they have seen nearly every day can be difficult for students. Closure provides everyone with a chance to say goodbye and remember the past year and move on to the next year.

Supporting your students into this next stage of their schooling lives is your last job as their teacher, and you

can help to ensure the transition is a positive experience and goes as smoothly as possible. This is particularly true if your students have a major transition year such as moving from kindergarten to school, or from primary school to intermediate or high school.

3. Packing up Packing up your classroom at the end of the year can feel daunting, but even more so if you are moving your classroom and need to leave the room clean and tidy for the next teacher coming in.

Create a simple plan with days and times you can devote to packing, put it on the wall and try to stick to it.

Leaving packing until the last minute will probably mean that you just throw stuff in boxes and have a horri-

ble mess to sort out later, and that is not the way you want to start the new year.

Creating your own packing system, and having boxes or bags labelled and ready, will help you to keep track.

Another tip is to start packing up equipment and games that you don’t use regularly. There will be students in your class who love tidying and sorting, so get them to help you. Check that each resource has all the correct pieces and/or cards. Replace or mend the box or bag that is holding it if needed. Then put it away in a big box or on a high shelf ready for next year. Obviously you can’t do this with all your resources as you will still be using some, but starting the packing process early gives you a sense of being in control, and makes your shelves look tidier as there is less stuff on them.

4. Throw stuff out Many teachers, myself included, can be great hoarders.

We think “Ooh that might come in useful one day, I’ll just keep it in this box/bag/ drawer/shelf...” and before we know it our classroom is full of bits and pieces that we don’t really need.

When you are sorting out at the end of the year it is a good idea to be a bit more ruthless and throw away any-

thing you haven’t used for more than a year. If it was useful, you would have used it, right? All the extra stuff just needs sorting and resorting and resorting, what a waste of time.

You might be able to give it to another teacher who will use it, but don’t just leave it in the room for the next teacher coming in, thinking they might use it. All you are actually doing is leaving them your old, unwanted junk. I’m talking about things like the 300 bottle tops in a big jar that you have had for years, but never actually used. Or the jigsaw with ten missing pieces that you think you might find one day and actually never have.

5. Your reflection As well as reflecting with your students, give yourself time to reflect on the past year.

• What lessons have these particular students taught you this year?

• What have been some of the challenges and how did you overcome them?

• What have been the highlights of this year?

• Which student taught you the most about yourself ?

•What leadership lessons have you learned?

Mary Mahoney: Activist and America’s first black registered nurse As May 6 - 12, 2017 marks National Nurses Week, we pay tribute by taking a look at America's first black nurse, Mary Mahoney.

America’s first black professional nurse, Mary Mahoney is known not only for her outstanding personal career, but also for her exemplary contributions to local and national professional organizations. Mahoney inspired both nurses and patients with her calm, quiet efficiency and untiring compassion.

Mary Eliza Mahoney was born on May 7, 1845 (some sources say April 16, 1845), in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts.

At the age of 20, Mary Mahoney began working as a nurse. Supplementing her low income as an untrained practical nurse, Mahoney took on janitorial duties at the New England Hospital

for Women and Children.

Incorporated on March 18, 1863, New England Hospital provided its patients state-ofthe-art medical care by solely female physicians. It also assisted women in the practical study of medicine.

After working for several years as a private-duty nurse at Boston’s New England Hospital for Women and Children, in 1878, Mahoney was admitted to the hospital’s nursing program.

During her training, a slim, 90-pound Mahoney participated in mandatory 16-hourper-day ward duty, where she oversaw the well-being of six patients at a time. Days not requiring ward duty involved attending day-long lectures while simultaneously devoting time to her studies.

The rigorous workload proved too tough for all but three of the 42 students. Mahoney was one of them who successfully made it through

National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) for which she gave the welcome address in 1909.

Patients tended by Mahoney throughout her career gave glowing testimony of her expert and tender care.

In addition to her pioneering efforts in nursing, Mahoney has been credited as one of the first women to register to vote in Boston following the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women’s suffrage, on August 26, 1920.

Important steps that can help you prevent a second heart attack include: • Quit smoking.

• Exercise regularly, according to your healthcare provider’s advice.

• Eat a healthy, balanced diet low in fat and calories.

• Control your weight.

• Manage your blood pressure.

• Control your cholesterol levels.

• Control diabetes or any other blood sugar abnormalities.

Visit your healthcare provider regularly to make sure you are on track.

Mistake 3: Staying stuck in grief or depression You may have lost your healthy self-image or the ability to do important things in your life. Any major life change will bring feelings of loss and may require a grieving process.

You and your family may need to work through a variety of emotions after your heart attack. Keep in mind that doing so leads to a positive, constructive future.

Cheesy Bacon Jalapeno Corn Muffins

Nonstick cooking spray 1 package (16 ounces) Smithfield Hometown Original Bacon 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese 2 eggs 6 tablespoons butter, melted 1/3 cup honey 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk 1 can corn kernels, drained 2 medium jalapeno peppers, seeded and diced 1 medium jalapeno pepper, thinly sliced Heat oven to 375 F. Line rimmed baking pan with foil and set lightly sprayed baking rack in pan. Cut bacon crosswise into thirds and lay out bacon strips on rack, being careful not to overlap slices. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until bacon has just begun to crisp. Remove from oven and drain on paper towels. Increase oven temperature to 400 F. In large bowl, stir together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt and cheese until well mixed.

In small bowl, whisk eggs until frothy and stir in melted butter, honey and milk. Add milk mixture to dry ingredients and stir until combined. Fold in corn and diced jalapeno and reserve.

Lightly spray or butter 12-cup muffin tin and line each cup with two slices of bacon. Evenly divide muffin batter into cups, filling about three-fourths full and top with remaining bacon and sliced jalapeno. Bake muffins 20 minutes, or until golden brown, using toothpick to test doneness. Let cool briefly, remove muffins from tin and serve while still warm.

Smithfield Fresh Sausage Links eggs cup milk tablespoons almond liquor (optional) 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 6 slices whole-wheat bread, crust removed and cut in half 3 tablespoons butter Cook sausage according to package directions; keep warm.

Beat together eggs, milk, almond liquor and cinnamon. Dip one bread slice half in egg mixture and wrap around one sausage link. Press bread edges together where they overlap to keep from unrolling. Repeat with remaining bread and sausage links.

Heat large skillet over medium heat; add butter and let melt. Place French toastwrapped sausages in skillet, seam-side down. Cook until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes total.

Flour, for dusting 1 package (about 1 pound) frozen prepared puff pastry, thawed 9 eggs, brought to room temperature for 30 minutes, divided 1 teaspoon water 1 Smithfield Hometown Original Fresh Sausage Roll, sliced into 8 patties, cooked and halved 1 pound fresh asparagus spears, cut into pieces 1 pint grape tomatoes, halved lengthwise salt, to taste freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. On lightly floured surface, roll out pastry and cut into eight 4-5-inch squares and transfer to greased or parchment-lined baking sheets spaced about 1 inch apart. Using small knife, lightly score line 1/2-inch inside edges of squares to create framed border. With fork, prick several holes in center of pastry squares.

Bake squares 7-8 minutes, or until pastry has puffed substantially yet not begun to brown.

Remove from oven and immediately tamp down centers inside of scored line carefully with back of fork.

Lightly beat 1 egg with water and brush outside frames of pastry with egg wash. Slightly overlapping framed pastry borders, equally divide and arrange sausage, asparagus and tomatoes in pastry squares, leaving centers open for eggs. Top each with cracked egg, seasoning with salt and pepper and sprinkling with cheese, if desired.

Return to oven and bake 8-10 minutes, or until puff pastry is golden brown and eggs have just set.

Let cool slightly and transfer tarts with spatula to serving plate and serve warm.

6 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 2 cups Smithfield Honey Cured Boneless Ham Steak, diced 1 tablespoon butter 8 waffle cups (4 ounces each) 4 teaspoons maple syrup, warm, divided 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped In bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cheese, salt and pepper; stir in ham.

In 10-inch, nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add egg mixture; reduce heat to medium-low.

Using wooden spoon, scrape eggs from edges of pan to center. Continue stirring eggs 3-5 minutes, or until fluffy.

Scoop 1/2 cup warm scrambled eggs into waffle cup and drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves.

Repeat for each waffle cup.

You will have grown, no matter what stage you are at in your career. The biggest mistake we make is not taking the time to recognize and acknowledge that. Make an appointment with yourself for a reflection time, because it is that important. Put it in your diary.

It is also important to keep note of any professional development you have done over the year and keep a log.

This can be useful for appraisal or writing your CV. We think we will remember everything we have done, but it is amazing how quickly we forget when we are immersed in busy school life and constantly moving to the next new thing.
