Thirty area high school students honored with scholarships from Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin

On Friday, April 28, 2017 Ronald McDonald House Charities of Eastern Wisconsin, McDonald Restaurants, Mayor Tom Barrett, and the Milwaukee Common Council members recognized 30 multicultural scholarship winners at a special luncheon. The students were treated to a limousine ride from their respective schools to Milwaukee City Hall for the scholarship presentation, and later adjourned to a luncheon at the Intercontinental Hotel-Milwaukee, 139 E. On Saturday, April 29, 2017 Pastors United hosted their 4th Annual Dinner Gala and Awards Banquet at Abundant Faith Church of Integrity, 7830 West Good Hope Road. This year's theme was, "The Year of the Young - Painting a New Image" with guest speaker Jawanza Kunjufu, founder and president of African American Images. He spoke to the attendees on the importance of helping our young people "paint a new image" for themselves in today's world by finding solutions to mend the relationship between the strength of the young, and the wisdom of the old so

they might thrive in the future. Salvation Army hosts 2017 Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon

On Thursday, April 27, 2017 the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County hosted their annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at the Italian Conference Center, 631 East Chicago St. About 4,600 volunteers served on behalf of The Salvation Army in Milwaukee County in 2016; and more than 300 of them were honored, along with 28 individual groups, at this year's luncheon. Kendrix named president, CEO of Queens and mini-queens sought African American Chamber of Commerce for Juneteenth Day Pageants Ossie Kendrix has been named president and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin (AACCW), the board of directors announced April 18, 2017.

Kendrix will take on the role previously held by Eve Hall, who was recently named CEO of the Milwaukee Urban League.

Most recently, Kendrix was the deputy state director for U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

He was also vice president of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, manager of the Office of Small Business Development at the City of Milwaukee, and program consultant with the Milwaukee Urban Entrepreneur Partnership.

As a minority small business champion of the U.S. Small Business Administration – Wisconsin District Office, Kendrix brings more than 15 years of experience

“Ossie’s vision and passion for economic development, along with a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership, small business development and advocacy, make him an ideal leader to continue the work that has been started,” said Clifton Phelps, AACCW board chairman. “We look forward to working in concert with his vision for the growth of the organization.”

Kendrix officially began his new role with the African American Chamber on May 1.

“I am honored to join the AACCW,” said Kendrix.

“The work of the chamber is critical to the community and I look forward to working with the board, membership, and staff to continue to promote greater unity and ensure the sustainability of local diverse businesses.”

Kendrix has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and communication from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master’s degree in public administration from Drake University.

He is a 2015 graduate of Cardinal Stritch University’s African American Leadership Program and was presented with an Award of Excellence from the Wisconsin Minority Supplier Diversity Council in 2012.

Local fundraiser to be held to benefit Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship On Saturday, May 6, 2017 WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio will host a community barbecue, silent auction and fundriaser at Geno's Lounge, 3910 W. Fond Du Lac Ave, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Eric Von Broadcast Fellowship endowed

by WUWM. The money will assist a recent high school graduate of color with a bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field and who embodies a desire to report on important issues facing Milwaukee. There will be an

Entertainment will be provided by Christopher’s Project For more than 25 years, the late Eric Von worked tirelessly via radio, television and community forums to keep Milwaukee informed for its betterment. Mark Sain unanimously elected President, Milwaukee Board of School Directors The Milwaukee Board of School Directors unanimously elected Director Mark Sain to serve as its president for the 2017-2018 Board year. Director Larry Miller will continue to serve as the Board’s vice president.

Queens and Mini-Queens are sought for Northcott Neighborhood House’s 25th Annual Miss Juneteenth Pageant and for the debut of its Little Miss Juneteenth Pageant. Both events will take place on Saturday, June 10 at 3:00 p.m., in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, located at 1531 W. Vliet St. For Miss Juneteenth, African American women between the ages of 14 and 18 years old are invited to apply and compete for $3,000 in cash, prizes and scholarships.

Likewise, girls between the ages of 7 and 13 may apply for Little Miss Juneteenth.

Both applications along with pageant rules and responsibilities can be found at junteenthdaymilwaukee. com. The deadline has been extended through Monday, May 7. There is no application fee.

The pageants serve as a lead-up event to Northcott’s annual Juneteenth Day Parade & Festival, now in its 46th year. The pageant gives African American young women an opportunity to highlight their academic achievements, positive contributions to society, and display their talents. In formal African American tradition, each contestant will be presented to the community.

court will all ride in the Juneteenth Day Parade on Sunday, June 18.

The young women crowned as Little Miss Juneteenth and Miss Juneteenth are expected to serve as exceptional role models during their entire reign and present a positive image for Milwaukee’s youth. The title holders will also make guest appearances at schools and various community events.

Northcott's mission is to support family stability, provide educational and recreational programs for youth, lessen neighborhood tensions, combat community deterioration, and provide various social services for the residents of Harambee and surrounding neighborhoods.

Being Frank

Sherriff David Clarke is one of the most polarizing figures in the country. Clarke has gone from a patrolman to possibly a high-ranking post in Homeland Security. Many in Milwaukee hate Clarke but those who love him are just as plentiful. You may disagree with Clarke and his antics but you have to admit he’s a success.

Clarke epitomizes the mindset of many people in today’s society. The raw uncut personality Clarke uses has propelled him into the national spotlight. Clarke has ridden the ignorance of a population to levels of success the patrolman of the past couldn’t even dream of.

Who would have thought a simple detective could tour the country spewing hate and get paid for it? Clarke is the picture for the model of success to today’s USA. Think about how Clarke used the racism in Milwaukee to propel himself into the cities spotlight. Milwaukee is racist to the core. Clarke stepped up and became the dream spokesperson for every racist in Wisconsin. Who better to enforce racist laws than one of the people who are being oppressed? Clarke must have realized early in

The great Sheriff Clarke

his career that if he blasted African Americans he would become famous. In this regard, Clarke is a genius.

Clarke's manipulation of racist paranoid thought has been masterful. The only person who has done it better is Donald Trump.

Clarke started out playing on the paranoid hatred that has made Milwaukee one of the more racist cities in the country. He then took his performance to the national level, and if anything, Clarke has stepped up his game.

Clarke's manipulation of the NRA has been the sort of

masterpiece that would make Jim Jones proud.

Clarke has used anti-Latino slurs to endear himself to the racist mentality that hates Mexican people. Clarke's genius has made people in places as far away as Middleton, TN take notice. What can be said about a man who went from Marquette University High School to heights undreamt of ? One thing: greatness.

Clarke has to be deemed one of the greatest actors to ever grace this earth.

- Genesis 2:15, MSG Bible In the conclusion of this series on climate change, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) makes several suggestions for conserving water in the home.

Conserving water in the bathroom • Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. In other words, don't use it for a garbage can. Dispose of tissues, insects and other similar waste in the trash rather than the toilet.

• Use a low-flow shower head.

• Install aerators on faucets.

• Don't let the water run when washing, brushing and shaving. Turn it on and off as needed.

• Take showers instead of baths. A ten-minute shower with a low-flow shower head uses half the water of a regular bath.

• If you are designing your own bathroom, think about putting in the Japanese style

of tub that is deeper but more compact - water cools more slowly requiring less input of heated water.

• Repair dripping faucets or toilets, which use enormous amounts of water.

Conserving water in the kitchen • Avoid washing dishes under a stream of water. Turn off the water in between dishes. Use only a full dishwasher and clothes washer.

• If you like a drink of cold water, but you must let the tap run for a while before the water gets cold, instead keep a pitcher of water in the fridge.

• Save the water from steaming or boiling vegetables for houseplants, vegetable broth for soup or stir fry

liquid.

• Wash food in a bowl or pot of water rather than in running water. This works especially well for herbs because you can swish them around and the dirt will come off their many surfaces. Let the herbs sit a minute and the dirt will sink to the bottom while the herbs float at the top.

Conserving water – general tips • Turn down your water heater when you are going on a long trip.

• Check your water meter while no water is being used in your house. If it moves, you have a leak.

• If you have a well, check your pump periodically. If the pump kicks on and off

while water is not being used, you have a leak.

As stewards, we are to take care of the Earth, use its resources wisely, neither exploiting, destroying or treating it recklessly. Let’s begin to move beyond just talking about the consequences of climate change; and begin committing ourselves to being “woke” that the increasing severe impact of storms, and other severe weather events, droughts, flooding, wildfires, and the effects of climate change affects us all and can no longer be ignored. While this series has concluded, the conversation must continue. As stewards

of God’s creation, may we not only begin to take that job more seriously, but begin to think and act greener.

On Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29, 2017 local author Lovelace Redmond celebrated the release of his first book, "Demons Gone Crazy." The book launch weekend started with a launch party on Friday, hosted at the Holiday Inn Milwaukee Riverfront, 4700 N. Port Washington Road, where Lovelace read an excerpt from his new book. On Saturday, April 29, 2017 Lovelace made an appearance at the East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library, 2320 N. Cramer Street, for a release party and book signing.

MPS proposed budget continues its alignment of resources for increased support to schools, students No growth in revenue, rising healthcare costs require difficult decisions Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Darienne B. Driver unveiled a proposed budget for the 2017–18 school year that puts students first, continues the service/delivery reorganization of Central Services, and provides additional support to schools.

The $1.17 billion budget is down 1.8 percent or $21 million from 2016–17. This reflects an expected decrease in revenues because the 2016– 17 budget included borrowing from the construction fund that is not included in the 2017–18 proposed budget.

due to uncertainty in funding at the state and federal levels combined with increasing healthcare costs and flat revenues,” said Superintendent Driver. “Despite these challenges, our team has worked hard to develop a budget that

The reorganization, flat revenues and increasing healthcare costs will result in the elimination of seven positions in Central Services and 187 school-based positions. However, due to vacancy and turnover, the number of layoffs resulting from position reductions will be minimal.

The proposed budget will be presented to the MPS Strategic Planning and Budget Committee on May 4.

Ohio quadruplets accepted to Ivy Leagues will attend Yale together By: Susan Donaldson James They're going to Yale!

The Wade quadruplets, all of whom got into Harvard and Yale, and who had offers from a combined 59 colleges, will attend university together in the fall, they revealed exclusively to NBC News.

Yale offered all four brothers from Liberty Township, Ohio, an "extraordinary" financial aid package, which no other college could beat.

It was an easy decision for 18-year-old Nick, Zach and Nigel Wade. "The school treated us like family," said Nigel the night before Deadline Day. But Aaron Wade, who was also accepted to Stanford University, was torn.

"I absolutely enjoyed the people and the social environment and appreciated the strong arts and humanities at Yale," he told NBC News.

Then he visited Stanford.

"There was a part of me that didn't want to like the school because it would make my decision easy," he said. "Alas, that didn't happen. I loved it as well."

"But at the end of the day, Yale made sense logistically — and it's an amazing school," said Aaron. "I don't regret my decision even though right now it kind of feels like a sacrifice."

Nick clicked the online decision button first just before midnight on April 26; Nigel followed suit; Zach accepted Yale's offer two days later.

By attending the same school, their parents won't be attending four different graduations in four years time.

"Yale won," said their father, Darrin Wade, a senior staff software architect for General Electric, who was rooting for the Connecticut Ivy all along. "They made the best offer, and it was the benchmark for my sons."

"But it was tough mentally," Wade, 51, told NBC. "I am glad this day is over with."

Their mother, Kim Wade, a 52-year-old junior high school principal, gave birth to the quads on Jan. 8, 1999

after undergoing fertility treatments. There were 512 quadruplet births in the United States that year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

What was their secret to raising such successful sons?

"Lots of push-ups and situps and running," said their father. "Discipline and structure."

Their parents had no idea the foursome had applied to the Ivy League. "We didn't have the resources for places like that," said Darrin Wade.

"They honestly would not let my wife and myself know what they wanted to do," he said. "We have more or less

Two of the quads had applied to 20 schools and two applied to 12. Of course, they did get some rejections, except for Nick, who got in everywhere he applied.

But, said brother Nigel, "We are more collaborative than competitive."

Aaron wants to study artificial intelligence and plays piano and sings. Nigel will study neuroscience and has plans to be a doctor. Zach is thinking of studying chemical engineering and is a dis-

cus star. Nick wants to be a diplomat and studied Arabic in Morocco.

The Wades aren't the first quadruplets to attend Yale.

The Crouch quads from Danbury, CT, made headlines when they attended the Ivy League school in 2010.

The Wade quads consulted them and asked how they managed to find their own individuality on the same campus.

"Ray [Crouch] said they had to go out of their way to meet up," said Aaron. "Everywhere they went, they definitely found their own niches without the pressure of being quads."

But, at the same time, Zach acknowledged it would be "great knowing if we do have trouble, we can go back to our brothers. There is someone there for us in 15 minutes."

When word got out of the quads' multiple acceptances, the media descended on the family. The New York Times published their powerful essays, which read as a collection, each sibling discussing their journey to become an individual.

The quads appeared on TODAY and were covered by news outlets from around the world.

"It's been in a way fun, but at the same time the experience has been overwhelming," said Aaron. "Most of it was positive and we feel humbled and grateful that the story had an impact."

Four diseases making a comeback thanks to anti-vaxxers

Measles has made a comeback, at least in New York City, where as many as 19 cases have been confirmed.

New York City isn't an anomaly, though. Diseases that are and have been avoidable in the U.S. thanks to vaccines, are resurfacing all across the country. Measles, for instance, was considered wiped out in 2000, but there have been several outbreaks in the past few years.

The emergence of these diseases — especially measles — is alarming, and mostly due to parents in the U.S. not vaccinating their kids. "If you are unvaccinated and you come in contact with measles, there's a 90 percent chance you will get it," says Jason McDonald, a spokesperson for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Though measles outbreaks are primarily linked to unvaccinated people, McDonald notes that some vaccines aren't foolproof. For example, the whooping-cough vaccine may lose its efficacy over time. And, overall, most people do get their vaccinations.

A CDC report looking at children entering kindergarten for the 2012–13 school year in all U.S. states found that more than 90 percent of these kids had their vaccines.

Still, there are people — including public figures and celebrities — who don't vaccinate their kids and promote their choices. Most infamously, Jenny McCarthy has espoused her anti-vaccination position because she believes vaccines are full of toxins and cause autism. When she recently posed a question on Twitter about finding a mate, the vaccination backlash was loud and clear.

Just how harmful are these notions, though? Below are some preventable diseases making a vicious return thanks to people not getting their vaccinations.

Measles According to the CDC, for every 1,000 children who get the measles, one or two will die. Currently, public-health workers are worried about the situation in New York, but just in the past three months, there have been reported cases of the disease in Massachusetts, Illinois and California. The CDC reports that from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28, 2014, 54 people in the U.S. have reported being infected with measles. On average, there are about 60 cases reported in the U.S. every year.

Most people in the U.S. are vaccinated against the measles, but since measles is still around in other countries, those who travel outside of the U.S. can contract it if they are not vaccinated. New York City has not been able to confirm the source of the disease.

Can you coupon without the extreme?

Following the Great Recession, it seemed liked extreme couponing was a competitive sport. You could watch on TV as shoppers armed with binders full of clipped coupons and an in-depth knowledge of stores' policies would get incredible discounts at the checkout counter.

Extreme couponing may not be as popular today, but the Recession gave many people an appreciation for living a frugal lifestyle. That's a good thing. Living within one's means is a core tenant of practicing good financial habits and couponing can help you achieve this goal. However, as with most things in life, you want to try and find a healthy balance and look for ways to coupon without the extreme.

Make the most out of your couponing. Whether you're on your weekly grocery run or making a major purchase, a discount can always be helpful. However, be wary of buying products you don't regularly need or use simply

A less extreme method is to consider the potential savings and spend a proportional amount of time researching products and looking for savings opportunities. But many people don't take this approach. A survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Zillow in 2016 found that on average, people spent eight hours researching mortgages or mortgage refinancing; 11 hours researching a new car or truck; and four hours researching a new phone, tablet or TV. Almost a fifth of those surveyed spent an hour or less shopping for their home mortgage.

Learning about and comparing options before making major purchases, such as a home or car, makes sense.

A small change in your mortgage's interest rate could save or cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Comparing two new phones could save a few hundred dollars when it comes time to purchase.

Smaller recurring savings, such as the previously men-

tioned grocery runs, can certainly add up in the long run.

If you've got a tried-and-true method that's working for you, go for it. Just make sure you get a good return on the time and effort you put in.

If you find joy in the hunt that's okay too. There are always exception and there are times when putting the extreme in couponing makes perfect sense. For example, there are extreme couponers who view their interest and practice as a hobby and coupon because it can be enjoyable to hunt for deals. While most hobbies cost money – this is one that could actually lead to savings.

There are also extreme couponers who figure out ways to get free products and then donate them to a local charity. It's a win-win for the couponer and those in need.

Bottom line: While saving money is important, and can be fun, try not to become so enthralled by potential savings that you lose sight of the purpose – to spend less money on what you want or need. If you are going to invest your time in money-saving endeavors, make sure you can potentially get a good return on your investment.

Their father said the financial aid package and the whirlwind visit to Yale the last week in April were the clinchers for him.

But it wasn't all about money. "It was other pieces, like the softer stuff," said Wade.

"They wanted to make sure they felt comfortable."

When the quads arrived on campus the admissions officer gave them a big "bear hug" and everyone knew them by name. And other students and parents recognized them. "They wanted to take selfies with us," said Wade.

"Not only that, but the alumni reached out and

made themselves available to us as a family," he said. "I had people I didn't know calling and saying we want your sons there and they are going to be sure they are taken care of."

After that, Wade said he thought, "I'm sold."

"I am a hard-ass," he said.

"But I want them to feel they have a support system to keep them safe."

Even though the other colleges made generous offers, Wade said Yale was "the best decision all around."

He said he used this analogy with his sons as they weighed their choices.

"You have a beautiful girl to go to the prom with and there is another girl who is kind of cute who made a pitch at the last minute," he said.

Yale was the beautiful girl.
