Instilling the importance of reading, one book at a time

On Monday, March 27, 2023

the Iota Psi Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated donated more than 160 books to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital - St. Joseph Campus. Their goal is simply to "instill the importance of reading, one book at a time."

This was a perfect match for Sigma Gamma Rho's Project CRADLE Care March of Dimes Community Service project. Through Project CRADLE

Care, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and the March of Dimes collaborate to address the issues that adversely affect black women and their children. Early childhood literacy is one of those areas of adversity. Iota Psi Sigma Basileus Tamara Sinclair shared that "many of our sorors are mothers, and our hope is that reading a book will increase the bond between parents and their newborn while also instilling the educational importance of reading."

Milwaukee Brewers celebrate 2023 Opening Day at American Family Field

The Milwaukee Brewers welcomed the start of the 2023 Major League Baseball season with a home opener against the New York Mets on Monday, April 3, 2023, at American Family Field. The Crew hosted New York for a three-game series (April 3-5) and a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals (April 7-9).

As part of the home openers, American Family Field favorite, 14-yearold Liamani Segura, sang the National Anthem for the home opener. The Racine native began singing for the Brewers crowd at the age of 9 and now stars in the Disney+ series, “High School Musical: the Musical: The Series.”

There were also other special guests and events to celebrate the opener including, Rufus King High School and the Milwaukee Hittaz were featured as the opening day drumline for the Brewers. The World Famous

B-1 Bomber provided by the 28th Bomb Wing out of Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota performed a pre-game flyover. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, Roger Towberman. Also the Festival Foods Play Ball Kid was Kyler Woodruff, son of Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff.

Opening day was the premier of the new J. Leinenkugel’s Barrel Yard. The new restaurant and brewery opened to guests, ready to tap the newest brews unique to American Family Field. To celebrate, fans received a commemorative “Opening Day” aluminum cup with purchase of a beverage. The Barrel Yard is open to all fans in attendance.

But the real celebration was the Brewers winning 10-0 win against the Mets for an exciting start to the season.

Cardinal Stritch University closing in May

The university, located in Milwaukee, cites downward enrollment trends and the pandemic as reasons for closing

Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee will be closing, effective on May 22, 2023. The university's president, Dan Scholz, made the announcement in a video posted on the school's YouTube page. Cardinal Stritch is a private Catholic university founded in 1937 by the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi.

In the video, Scholz said, "We are all devastated by this development, but after examining all options, this decision was necessary. I wish

there was a different path we could pursue. However, the fiscal realities, downward enrollment trends, the pan-

demic, the need for more resources and the mounting operational and facility challenges presented a no-win sit-

uation. I am profoundly sad for the students."

Students who spoke with WISN 12 News Monday are not shocked by the decision.

"I mean like the school itself, it's not the most up kept and everything. There's been like some problems here and there. Honestly, I figured it would happen in the next couple years," freshman Rachel Harrell said.

"I live in California, so the Cal State deadline has also passed a long time ago, so I'm a little running around," Savannah Barajas said. "I might have to take a gap year. We'll see."

Cardinal Stritch will hold their final commencement ceremony on May 21 at Wisconsin Center. The university adds that it will help students transition to another school. They also say they will offer an employee assistance program for faculty and staff.

Milwaukee Enrollment Network launches community education campaign to promote awareness of return to Medicaid re-enrollment requirements

All BadgerCare Plus and Medicaid recipients will need to renew or reapply for coverage in the next year

The Milwaukee Enrollment Network (MKEN), with the support of the HealthyMKE community outreach and education initiative and Covering Wisconsin, announces the launch of a comprehensive community education campaign to promote the upcoming return to BadgerCare Plus and Medicaid re-enrollment requirements for all recipients. The campaign emphasizes the importance of Medicaid members staying informed and taking action on renewing health insurance benefits at the appropriate time over the next year.

After three years of continuous Medicaid eligibility due to the Public Health Emergency, residents have not needed to take any action to re-enroll in Medicaid and retain health insurance coverage. Continuous eligibility ends on March 31, 2023. Therefore, all people with Medicaid or BadgerCare Plus coverage will need to renew their benefits per their designated renewal period sometime between June 2023 and May 2024.

MKEN is committed to ensuring all current recipients have the information needed to navigate the process, re-enroll, or get connected to alternative affordable health insurance options. “Adequate, accessible, and affordable health insurance coverage is critical to improving the health and well-being of individuals and our community,” said Justin Rivas, Director of Community Health Initiatives at the Milwaukee Health Care Partnership and MKEN Manager. “The goal of this campaign is to en-

sure no one falls through the cracks and finds themselves without coverage - whether that means maintaining Medicaid coverage or enrolling in employer or Marketplace plans.”

The comprehensive campaign will strategically target zip codes with high numbers of Medicaid members and will leverage community influencers, informational videos, colorful, attention-grabbing social content, and grassroots person-to-person outreach. It will also support community and health care organizations by distributing printed informational materials and providing readymade digital content such as flyers, social posts, and newsletter content in the form of a downloadable toolkit.

Medicaid and BadgerCare

Plus recipients will be encouraged to follow these key steps as promoted by the campaign:

Update your address and contact information: It is important that Medicaid has your correct information so you receive important updates and renewal date information. Update your information on the MyACCESS app, access.wi.gov, or by calling Milwaukee Enrollment Services at 888-947-6583.

Know your renewal date: Recipients will be notified of their renewal dates through mail, text, or email. These dates can also be found in the ACCESS online portal or the MyACCESS Wisconsin app. Reapplication or renewal deadline dates will be between June 2023 and May 2024 and will differ among

recipients. Pay close attention to the renewal year on your notice.

Wait to renew until your renewal window: The renewal window starts 45 days before the renewal deadline date. It is important not to renew before the start of your specific window so your coverage lasts as long as possible.

Download the MyACCESS app and turn on notifications: The MyACCESS app is an essential tool to keep recipients informed. The app can also be used to update personal information and upload verification documents during the renewal period.

"We want all Medicaid members to know they have free support. Your situation is unique – and you don’t have to understand it all yourself,” said Covering Wisconsin Director Allison Espeseth, and partner of the Milwaukee Enrollment Network. Covering Wisconsin is the state’s federally certified and state-licensed health insurance navigator agency. “Navigators – and other enrollment assisters around the state – are specially trained to help you understand your coverage options, enroll in a plan, and take next steps. This includes figuring out if you may still

qualify for Medicaid, have an affordable option available from your job, or could get financial help for plans from HealthCare.gov.”

Consumers who are no longer eligible for BadgerCare Plus or Medicaid can find affordable plans on the Healthcare.gov Marketplace. Visit HealthyMKE.com or call Covering Wisconsin at 414-400-9489 with questions or for help renewing Medicaid coverage or signing up for Marketplace Cov-

erage. Covering Wisconsin has health insurance navigators who are knowledgeable and available to provide free help with Medicaid or Marketplace coverage in person, over the phone, by chat, or by text. Residents may also get assistance from benefit counselors at their clinics or hospitals.

Enrollment assistance partners can download campaign resources by going to healthymke.com/medicaid-renewal.

The MKEN Medicaid re-enrollment and renewal campaign is supported by issuers, Covering Wisconsin, the City of Milwaukee Health Department, and the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services.

Legislature has opportunity for massive impact on economy and families

With a single investment, Wisconsin leaders have an opportunity to fortify the statewide workforce over the next two years while easing unprecedented strain on a system that parents everywhere rely on to support their families and their futures.

Early childhood education is the workforce behind our workforce. It allows the parents of young children to maintain employment and, at the same time, is one of the most effective investments we can make in our children’s academic success and our community’s health and safety. Despite its importance, the sector was already facing extraordinary pressure before the pandemic and is at even greater risk today.

That is why Milwaukee Succeeds and the Greater Milwaukee Foundation – in alliance with local and statewide coalitions in the field –are calling for a state investment of $300-million in the upcoming biennial budget to provide ongoing stability for early childhood education in Wisconsin.

Lincoln

The mechanism for this significant impact is already in place. We need only replenish it.

Wisconsin lawmakers were instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Child Care Counts program, which, since 2020, has provided vital support to early childhood education providers using federal pandemic relief funding. Statewide, more than 3,300 programs have stayed open and more than 22,000 child care professionals have remained or become employed thanks to

Heritage

Funeral Advantage®

Child Care Counts.

A survey of more than 500 child care programs in Milwaukee revealed that providers are using this funding for basic expenses like mortgage, utilities, recruiting or retaining staff, and reducing costs for families. Without this funding, 28 percent of Milwaukee programs report they would have permanently closed.

By January 2024, however, these federal emergency dollars will be exhausted, and our early childhood education sector hangs in the balance.

If Child Care Counts ends, 42 percent of Milwaukee early childhood education centers report they’ll have to raise rates for families who, on average, are already paying a quarter of their annual income for care for one infant. In addition, 30 percent of child care programs report they’d have to cut wages for staff, who are earning an average of just $13 per hour with no benefits.

Allowing Child Care Counts to end would lead to profound staffing shortages and reduced access to affordable child care. When working parents lack access to child care, or when its cost is out of reach, they are forced to make hard choices like working fewer hours, changing jobs or dropping out of the workforce altogether, leaving our employers with a reduced labor pool in an already-tight market.

Early childhood education is an essential need trapped in a broken business model. Families can't afford to pay more. Educators can't afford to earn less. And Wisconsin’s economy can’t recover and thrive without the workforce at full strength.

We don’t need to accept this outcome. Instead, we propose sharing in the solution.

For years, the Foundation and our community wide education partnership, Milwaukee Succeeds, have collaborated with providers, parents and other stakeholders to demonstrate how early childhood education is essential to a Milwaukee for all. Since 2020 alone, the Foundation has invested nearly $8.5-million in philanthropic support for early care and education, and the Milwaukee Succeeds-led MKE Early Childhood Education Coalition has worked alongside partners including the City of Milwaukee to direct millions of dollars in public and

private resources where the sector has needed them most.

Wisconsin currently budgets only $16-million in general purpose revenue for early childhood education, which is the minimum needed to access federal early care and education funds. That works out to a state investment of just $50 a year for every child under age 5. By comparison, it costs more than $100 a day to incarcerate one adult in Wisconsin. We can do better.

The Foundation and the philanthropic community will continue to prioritize support for the sector, and we call on the Legislature to coinvest with us. By committing $300-million in general purpose revenue to Child Care Counts, state leaders would be strengthening the program they helped establish while supporting the many working families they represent.

From its positive impact on K-12 success, career and health outcomes to its reduction of negative social outcomes like addiction and arrest, the benefits of high-quality, early childhood education for kids are well-documented. We now know it is as important to our economy as it is our children’s futures.

Commensurate state coinvestment would offer stability in the early care and education system that Wisconsin’s workforce needs and our families deserve.

Milwaukee Youth gather together for 'National Take Down Tobacco Day'

The "National Take Down Tobacco Day" was recognized on April 1, 2023, at El Bethel COGIC, where the pastor is Rev. Steve Tipton. The purpose of the day was to have youth advocates across the country to come together to call 'Big Tobacco's' bluff and expose them, for they are gambling with the lives of our children. The message was to prevent youth from being fooled into vaping, smoking e-cigarettes and all other flavored tobacco products as well as to encourage those who are using these deadly products to quit. 'Big tobacco' wants to fool another generation into addiction. So, youth around the country stood up. Everyone is needed to help in the fight against the tobacco industry and save our youth and communities.

Research with Wisconsin African American Tobacco Prevention Network and Jump at the Sun, LLC. was shared about African American neighborhoods are targeting with tobacco products. There are 45,000 African Americans who die each year from illnesses from menthol tobacco products.

Five tips for caregiving for someone with cancer

A cancer diagnosis can be tough to take, and not just for the patient.

Caregivers are a vital part of a cancer patient’s care team, but the role can be exhausting. Plenty of caregivers struggle with the challenges of helping their loved one navigate treatment and, hopefully, survival.

Research published in the journal Medicine measured the scope of the problem.

“The prevalence of anxiety and depression in cancer patient caregivers, as measured with validated instruments, is approximately 47 percent and 42 percent, respectively,” the researchers, led by Hai Mei Geng from Beijing Shijitan Hospital in China, said when the study was released. “This high prevalence of anxiety and depression affects the quality of life of the caregiver.”

Here are some tips to help you navigate caregiving for someone with cancer and provide the best care you can for your loved one.

Communication is key

Take the time to listen to the patient. They may have strong feelings about what they want to do for themselves and where they need help. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) suggests reassuring the patient they will be a central part of all decisions and discussions. Remain open to the patient’s feelings and opinions. Still, you should acknowledge your feelings when speaking with the pa-

tient.

When communicating with the care team, use a notebook. Writing down your questions and keeping them handy during visits with the caregiving team is helpful.

ASCO suggests the following questions for the care team:

• What is the type of cancer?

• What are the treatment options?

• What does the diagnosis and stage mean?

• What should the patient expect during their treatment?

• What kind of physical and emotional support will the patient need?

• Who should the patient contact with other questions and during non-business hours?

• Can you recommend a social worker to help with support services?

Be organized Staying organized will help ease the stress of caregiving for someone with cancer.

A day planner may be helpful if you prefer pen and paper; many offer ample space for notes. It will also allow for easy tracking of medical appointments and caregiver responsibilities. Also, consider digital options. A shared electronic calendar and note-taking system may be helpful. A hybrid method may be best; try a digital calendar and a handwritten journal.

The Cleveland Clinic recommends organizing the following information:

• A valid form of ID

• Proof of insurance

• List of medications

• Emergency contact information, including physicians, caregivers and pharmacy

• Patient’s health information, including labs, prescriptions and treatment

• Scheduling information, including appointments and caregivers

• Insurance and billing information, including receipts

• Legal documents, includ-

ing health care powers of attorney, living will, advance directives, trusts, wills and guardianship papers

Delegate tasks

According to ASCO, there are ways to make caregiving a team effort. Create a list of tasks that will be involved with caregiving. Some tasks to include:

• Picking up prescriptions

• Household chores

• Rides to appointments

• Child care

• Insurance and billing issues

• Pet care

Friends and family can be assigned these individual tasks and then scheduled in the planner. This helps keep everyone on task.

Physical care of the patient

The patient may need assistance with dressing, feeding, grooming and toileting. ASCO suggests inquiring about rehabilitation services. A visiting nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist and others can come into the home and help manage the patient’s care.

They can teach you how to help the patient when they are absent. These services can be arranged by your primary care physician or specialist, and they are often covered by insurance. They can work with the patient during treatment and after treatment has finished.

Self-care matters

Taking care of yourself during this time is vital.

UCSF Health recommends the following to help avoid

caregiver burnout:

• Eat well and drink water

• Exercise at least three times a week, or take a short daily walk

• Let family and friends help you

• Keep the lines of communication open

• Schedule pleasurable, meaningful activities several times a week

• Join a support group

There are plenty of resources for caregivers of cancer patients to turn to, including:

• American Cancer Society: Information on caregiving and support communities

• CancerCare.org: Online support groups, counseling, education assistance, education

• National Cancer Institute: Information for caregivers and information on clinical trials

• Livestrong: Emotional support and other resources

• Leukemia and Lymphoma Society: Information, support and other resources

• National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship: Caring for the caregiver — Cancer Survival Toolbox

Kwame Brathwaite, the pioneering activist and photographer whose work helped define the aesthetics of the "Black is Beautiful" movement of the 1960s and beyond, died on April 1, 2023, aged 85.

His son, Kwame Brathwaite, Jr., announced his father's death in an Instagram post that read in part, "I am deeply saddened to share that my Baba, the patriarch of our family, our rock and my hero has transitioned."

Brathwaite's work has been the subject of resurgent interest from curators, historians and collectors in recent years, and his first major institutional retrospective, which was organized by the Aperture Foundation, made its debut in 2019 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles before touring the country.

Brathwaite was born in 1938 to Barbadian immigrants, in what he referred to as "the People's Republic of Brooklyn" in New York, though his family moved from there to Harlem and then to the South Bronx when Brathwaite was 5 years old. He attended the School of Industrial Art (now the High School of Art and Design) and, according to profiles of Brathwaite in T Magazine and Vice, was drawn to photography by two moments. The first was in August of 1955, when a 17-year-old Brathwaite encountered David Jackson's haunting photograph of a brutalized Emmett Till in his open casket. The second was in 1956, when — after he and his brother Elombe co-founded the African Jazz Arts Society and Studios (AJASS) — Brathwaite saw a young man taking photos in a dark jazz club without the use of a flash, and his mind became alight with possibility.

Using a Hasselblad medium-format camera, Brathwaite attempted to do the same, learning to work with limited light in a manner that enhanced the visual narrative of his imagery. He would soon also develop a darkroom technique that enriched and deepened how black skin would appear in his photography, honing the practice in a small darkroom in his Harlem apartment. Brathwaite went on to photograph jazz legends performing throughout the 1950s and '60s, including Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and others.

"You want to get the feeling, the mood that you're experiencing when they're playing," Brathwaite told

Aperture Magazine in 2017. "That's the thing. You want to capture that."

By the early 1960s, alongside the rest of AJASS, Brathwaite began using his photography and organizing prowess to consciously push back against whitewashed, Eurocentric beauty standards. The group came up with the concept of the Grandassa Models, young black women whom Brathwaite would photograph, celebrating and accentuating their features. In 1962, AJASS organized "Naturally '62", a fashion show held in a Harlem club called the Purple Manor and featuring the models. The show would go on to be held regularly until 1992. In 1966, Brathwaite married his wife Sikolo, a Grandassa Model whom he

had met on the street the year prior when he asked if he could take her portrait. The two remained married for the rest of Brathwaite's life.

By the 1970s, Brathwaite's focus on jazz shifted to other forms of popular black music. In 1974, he traveled to Africa with the Jackson Five to document their tour, also photographing the historic "Rumble in the Jungle" boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in what's now the Democratic Republic of Congo that same year. Commissions in this era also saw Brathwaite photographing Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Bob Marley and other music legends.

Throughout the ensuing decades, Brathwaite continued to explore and develop his mode of photography, all through the lens of the "Black is Beautiful" ethos. In 2016, Brathwaite joined the roster of Philip Martin Gallery in

dies at 85

Los Angeles, and he was continuing to photograph commissions as recently as 2018, when he shot artist and stylist Joanne Petit-Frère for The New Yorker

T Magazine's 2021 profile, published on the occasion of Brathwaite's retrospective traveling to the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, noted that the photographer's health was failing such that he was unable to be interviewed for the article. A separate exhibition, "Kwame Brathwaite: Things Well Worth Waiting For," is currently on view at the Art Institute of Chicago, where it will remain until July 24, 2023
