Milwaukee Business Journal presents Flash Forum for Democratic National Convention On Friday, April 5, 2019, Milwaukee Business Journal hosted a flash forum on the forthcoming Democratic National Convention in 2020, at Good City Brewing & Taproom. The forum entitled "Democratic National Convention: How Milwaukee-Area Business Can Get Involved," featured a panel that included (from left) Wisconsin Center CEO Marty Brooks; Dynamic Events by David Caruso President and Creative Director David Caruso; Milwaukee Urban League President and CEO Dr. Eve Hall; Milwaukee Bucks Senior Vice President Alex Lasry; and Democratic National Committee Secretary Jason Rae. The panel discussed how businesses big and small can benefit from the DNC when it is in town next year.

Mahogany CARES, Inc. presents 'Safe Harbor: Stories of Survivors' for Black Women Heal Day

On Monday, April 1, 2019, Mahogany CARES, Inc. hosted a special event for International Black Women Heal Day entitled, "Safe Harbor: Stories of Survivors (SOS)," at Aurora Mt. Sinai's Rapkin Auditorium, 960 N. 12th Street. The event, which was coordinated by Christian Women Perspective Ministries, Inc. founder Dr. Alice L. Belcher, D. Div., M.S., B.A., CDVA, Black Women Heal Day is an international day of healing for Black female survivors of sexual assault. This year's presenters included spiritual healing specialist La Soule; playwright and actor Linette Davis; healer, preacher and author Liland Gee; community advocate Cyrena Martin; Aurora Sexual Assault Treatment Center (SANE) Supervisor Sharain Horn; mental health clinician Marrika Rodgers; authors Elizabeth Brown and Amazshea Lee; and inspirational speaker Gigi Y. Boone-Frazier-Young.

UWM hosts 'A Seat at the Table: Women in Leadership and Civic Engagement' On Monday, April 1, 2019, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee welcomed Donna Brazile (left) and Kelly Ayotte (right) for a lively and thoughtful discussion entitled, "A Seat at the Table: Women in Leadership and Civic Engagement," at UWM's Union Wisconsin Room. The event focused on the topics of women in leadership, contemporary feminism, and the political outlook. Donna Brazile is a renowned political strategist, the former interim chair of the Democratic National Committee, esteemed author, and lecturer.

Kelly Ayotte, former U.S. Senator and former Attorney General, is noted for her leading role in passing the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA), while working to pass legislation to provide more resources for service men and women.

This small Louisiana parish wants to know who burned three of their black churches to the ground It is still unclear who or what is responsible for the burning of three historically black Louisiana churches in 10 days. It will take investigators time to sift through what evidence remains to determine if the blazes were intentionally set and if they are connected.

As they do, residents and worshipers in the Louisiana parish where all three fires occurred are withholding judgment about what may have caused them, even as officials say they contained "suspicious elements" and the episodes evoke recollections of past acts of hate against black churches.

"I feel our district was being targeted because all three of the churches were in our district," Pastor Freddie Jack, the Seventh District Missionary Baptist Association President told CNN's Don Lemon Monday.

"At first we thought it might have been an electrical problem but then when the second church ... burning occurred I realized it was our sister church ... then two days later the third occurred so at least me, (it) made me think that we're being targeted."

All three churches were in St. Landry Parish. St. Mary Baptist Church, in Port Barre, burned on March 26, followed by Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas on April 2 and two days later, Mount Pleasant Baptist

Church in the same town.

Officials are also investigating a fourth, smaller fire on March 31 at the predominantly white Vivian United Pentecostal Church in Caddo Parish more than 200 miles north of St. Landry. The blaze was intentionally set.

St. Landry Parish is nearly 42 percent black. Opelousas is 75 percent black.

The city's mayor, Julius Alsandor, called the church burnings "hideous."

"The relevance and the impact on the people in the surrounding communities and especially the congregation of each of these churches, it's hurtful and there may be some fear that is being exhibited by those who are a part of the three churches," he said.

Hurt, fear and confusion.

That's all the congregants are left with for now.

"We don't know why, we don't know when, we don't know who," Rev. Gerald Toussaint, who leads the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, told CNN affiliate KATC. "We will let the authorities handle that, but we just know a higher power and a higher authority who can bring this thing to fruition."

'More questions than answers' In an appeal for the public's help, Gov. John Bel Edwards said he has directed the State Fire Marshal as well as local and federal authori-

"Churches are sacred places, and no one should fear for their safety in their house of worship," he said. "And no one should be concerned that their house of worship would be destroyed."

"Right now, there are more questions than answers, but hopefully the investigation will yield information we can share with the public in short order," he said in his State of the State address, according to CNN affiliate KTBS. The FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the investigations.

And as they look for answers, congregants wait.

"Something is not right, something isn't right but

God has the last word," Ethel Thomas, a member of Mount Pleasant told KATC. "We're going to keep on keeping on."

"It was heartbreaking, I wanted to cry but I say I'll hold it in," she told the news station. "I had cried so much already when they called to let me know that our church was burned. I didn't know what else to do, I just said 'Lord you're in control'."

What do we call the fires?

State Fire Marshal H. "Butch" Browning said in a statement there is "clearly something happening" in the community.

"We believe these three fires are suspicious," Browning said. "We are falling short of talking about what caused the fires, falling short of say-

ing they are related, however cognizant that there is a problem and no coincidence that there are three fires."

The NAACP labeled the fires "domestic terrorism," adding the "spike in church burnings in Southern states is a reflection of the emboldened racial rhetoric and tension spreading across the country."

The ACLU called the events "deeply disturbing."

But Jack says it's just too early for conclusions.

"I can't say for one reason or another that the actual burning was a racist act or a hate crime until we can determine who caused them, who's behind them. I don't think that we can rightfully or truthfully say it was either or," he told Lemon. "We need the facts before we can generate thought that's concerning what it was."

And the facts may take a while, because most of the evidence is likely gone.

"Investigating a fire is a very lengthy process," Browning said. "It's one of the most complicated and unconventional crime scenes you'll ever enter because most of the evidence is burned away."

"The problem with arson investigations is the same as bomb investigations: the evidence gets destroyed," CNN Law Enforcement Analyst James Gagliano said.

should pray that God’s will be done in the situation. Pastor Nabors’ preaching and teaching on Gethsemane peaked my interest in what really happened at Gethsemane. When I read the story of Jesus’ Gethsemane moment, I prayed then I would never have such a difficult decision that I would need to pray a Gethsemane prayer.

Gethsemane is located on the slope of the Mount of Olives. It was the place where Jesus often went to pray during His earthly ministry.

Just prior to Jesus’ betrayal, He went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray with His disciples. Jesus knew His betrayal and crucifixion was just around the corner.

At Gethsemane, Jesus took His closest companions with Him – Peter, James and John – and asked that they watch and pray because His soul was troubled and sorrowful.

The disciples did not understand the magnitude of Jesus’ request, because when

This Week’s Meditation: Jesus In the Garden of Gethsemane Luke 22:39-46 Early in my Christian walk, I was privileged to sit under the spiritual tutelage of Reverend Dr. Roy B. Nabors, who at that time pastored the Community Baptist Church of Greater Milwaukee. I recall Pastor Nabors often putting special emphasis on Gethsemane in his teaching and preaching to drill in his congregants’ minds and hearts that each one of us will encounter our own Gethsemane in life. He wanted us to realize that difficult agonizing times will come but God is near. Pastor Nabors went on to say that instead of fighting against God, we

Jesus returned, they were asleep. Jesus, looking ahead to the events that were to happen, prayed that His Father would remove the bitter cup that He was to drink; but in obedience and submission to God’s will, Jesus prayed “nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will….” (Matthew 26:36-42.) Luke’s version records an angel from heaven came and strengthened Jesus.

One day my moment in Gethsemane came. There was no one who could accompany me there because this situation was between God and me. As I prayed for and agonized over the situation, like Jesus, I asked God to allow His will and not mine to be done. At that

moment, God’s love and peace comforted me. Pastor Roy Nabors was right. Your Gethsemane moment will come!

Beloved, there will come a time in everyone’s life when they must choose to do God’s will over their own will. The choice you make, like Jesus, will display your level of commitment and obedience to God. Jesus knew what was to come; however, Jesus’ prayer was that God’s will be done regardless of what the future had in store for Him. Even nailed to the Cross, Jesus was still teaching the importance of obedience to God’s Word and the importance of trusting God in every situation.

This Week’s Reflection: As you reflect on the greatness of God’s love for you, ask yourself: Are there any areas of your life you need to rededicate/commit to Him? If so, make a list of those things you want to make a priority and pray for divine

strength to rededicate that area(s) of your life to God. End your time of meditation by praying to God to raise your level of commitment to Him so that you grow to accept God’s will over your will at all times, regardless of the situation.

Longtime Milwaukee journalist Greg Stanford dies at 72 Gregory Stanford, a columnist for the editorial pages of The Milwaukee Journal and Journal Sentinel who worked diligently to build bridges, highlight hope and lessen Milwaukee's racial disparities and injustices, died Saturday of lung cancer. He was 72.

Stanford's career spanned four decades, first as a reporter, then as an editorial writer and columnist for 19 years before retiring in 2007.

Stanford came to Milwaukee to attend Marquette University in 1964 after graduating from St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C. He was the first in his family to leave the D.C. area, his older brother, Amos Stanford, said. Greg didn't expect the Midwestern city to become his home. But it did.

"A lot of it had to do with the injustices he saw (in Milwaukee)," Amos said.

Stanford launched his career as a general assignment reporter at The Journal in 1971. He moved on to cover the federal courts beat and urban affairs, which included stories about racial segregation in the Milwaukee Police Department under Chief Harold Breier. Stanford's reporting revealed that the U.S. Justice Department was considering withholding federal revenue sharing funds from the city due to discrimination on the police force. After the Legislature stripped Breier of much of his unilateral authority, he retired in 1984.

Stanford joined The Journal's editorial board in 1988 and started writing his column, in which he often sought to right wrongs while appealing to people in power to listen to their better angels.

"He would take the flack that came."

His longtime partner, art activist Cynthia Henry, said Stanford was driven by "being able to tell a story and giving a voice to those who didn't have one and shining a light on the problems that keep people impoverished."

He leaves behind Henry, his partner of 30 years; two sons, Jay Stanford and Frantz Stanford; three siblings Amos Stanford, Jacqueline Stanford and Joanna Stanford; grandson Miles Rice; Henry's children Dana Henry and Dwane Henry; granddaughter Ayzha Ternoir; and great-grandson Boston Cox. He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

Funeral services for Stanford are pending.

City of Milwaukee Health Department partners with Ascension St. Joseph to open Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) office On Monday, April 8, 2019, Ascension Health in partnership with the City of Milwaukee Heath Department, hosted a grand opening of a new Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) office at Ascension St. Joseph to help give more women and children access to the nutrition they need. WIC offers nutritious foods, nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals to other health and social services to low-income, nutritionally atrisk pregnant women, postpartum mothers, infants and young children up to age five. The WIC staff will be based at the Women’s Outpatient Center (WOC).

WOC offers care for low-income women and their babies throughout pregnancy, delivery and early parenting months, resulting in improved birth weights and reductions in infant mortality. Forty percent of WOC patients qualify for WIC benefits but are not currently enrolled. Having access to this program at the same site where women receive pre-natal care means more women and families will be able to Event Photo take advantage of this valuable resource available to them.

On Thursday March 28, 2019, the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5 - 4 at Miller Park on opening day. The Brew Crew played with confidence and the MVP Christian Yelich hit a go-ahead three-run home run, to give the Brewers a 4-3 lead.

Pitcher Jhoulys Chacin hit a solo home run to give the Brewers the winning run in the home opener.

The catches by Lorenzo Cain were outstanding as he defended Miller Park with grace. He caught the final out of the day to give the Brewers an opening day victory.

Why are Black church burning?

"That's going to be the issue, you've got to go back and piece this together when a lot of the evidence would have been burned up in the fire."

Authorities are reviewing a long list of clues.

"Similar type of accelerant, any type of incendiary device that could have possibly been planted there, and then link in the houses, what things could be found at what crime scene that could be linked to another, find out if there's a pattern and if there's somebody here who's a serial arsonist," Gagliano said.

Understand this about black churches Church burnings were a common occurrence in the Jim Crow era. And fires at black churches -- especially those in the South -- immediately bring to mind such racist attacks.

"For decades, African American churches have served as the epicenter of survival and a symbol of hope for many in the African American community," NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said. "As a consequence, these houses of faith have historically been the targets of violence."

Several black churches in the South were burned in 2015 shortly after the mass murder of nine people at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, though it is unclear if those fires were racially motivated.

According to the latest data from the National Fire Protection Association, fires within religious and funeral properties have been on decline for decades. Between 2007 and 2011, just 16 percent were ruled intentional, according to the association.

Student scientists exhibit at STEM Fair This April, more than 400 MPS students from 42 schools hopped off yellow school buses carrying display boards, science experiments, inventions, and equipment to compete in the annual MPS STEM Fair. A team of 50 volunteers and 130 judges were ready to help them set up displays and rate their projects.

Student work ranged from practical inventions to solve everyday problems to experiments designed around scientific principles. Projects were divided into three categories: Science Inquiry (traditional), Engineering Design (solving a problem), and Research Study (high school only, for complex projects).

A contest was held for students to design a logo for this year’s STEM Fair. One winner and three honorable mentions were recognized during the awards ceremony.

STEM Fair was made possible by numerous community partners, including Discovery World.

'All of Us' program looks to break through health disparates with ground breaking genetic research Recognizing the historical racial and gender imbalance in many medical trials, President Barrack Obama proposed during his 2015 State of the Union Address and Congress subsequently approved $215 million in funding for the National Institute of Health to collect and analyze anonymous health and genetic medical information.

The project has been described as the “moon shot” of medicine and early results were encouraging enough that in October 2016, Congress approved $1.45 billion and expanded the goal, according to Zeno Franco, PhD. associate professor of at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and “All of Us” site co-principal investigator. The goal, Dr. Franco said, is to gather a massive anonymous medical database in order to conduct research and study how health, genetics and environment affect individual human health, especially historically underrepresented groups including females, communities of color, persons with disabilities, the homeless and individuals with lower incomes, among others. The decades-long project is expected to lead to new medical treatments that are unique to individuals, and enable a future of precision medicine, he said.

The “All of Us” Research Program is part of the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI). By enrolling 1 million or more people by the year 2022, researchers

like where a person lives, what type of work they do, and their family health history. Precision medicine’s goal is to be able to tell people the best ways to stay healthy. If someone does get sick, precision medicine may help health care teams find the treatment that will work best.

How to Heat a Frozen Ham Many frozen hams are fully cooked and can be served as soon as they’re properly thawed, which is an ideal solution for a casual brunch with mini sandwiches on the menu. However, if you’re serving an elegant holiday dinner, you’re more likely to prefer a warm centerpiece dish. A fully cooked ham is still a time-saving option; you’ll just need to allot time to heat it in the oven once it’s thawed.

Start by thawing a fully cooked ham in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours.

To keep your ham extra moist, always put the cut-side down. You might also consider placing a baking rack in the pan and adding a quarter-inch of water before placing the ham on the rack.

For a spiral-cut, bone-in ham, heat the oven to 325 F. Remove ham from film and foil. Place ham cut-side down on a raised edge baking pan lined with foil. Heat uncovered 60-75 minutes for the entire ham or 10 minutes per pound for smaller portions.

For a boneless ham, heat the oven to 350 F. Place the ham, cut-side down, on a raised edge baking pan lined with foil. Cover the ham tightly with foil and heat 35-40 minutes.

Another option for adding extra juicy flavor is a glaze, which can be as simple as dissolving three parts brown sugar into one part honey in a small saucepan. Or for a more elegant affair, consider a fruit-infused glaze to complement the savory pork.
