School Sisters of Notre Dame host '2022 Women's Leadership Luncheon' On Thursday, March 3, 2022, the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province hosted their annual "2022 Women's Leadership Luncheon" at the Wisconsin Club, 900 W. Wisconsin Ave. The luncheon recognizes women leaders who have made a positive difference in our community. The theme for this year's luncheon was, "A Title is Not a Leader;" the featured keynote speaker was Dr. Eve M. Hall, President and CEO of the Milwaukee Urban League. Dr. Hall's speech emphasized the importance of action, leading by example and how one can be a leader without a distinguished title. The event honored Milwaukee Catholic Home Vice President of Clinical Integration Katie Grant and Children's Wisconsin Chief Information Security Officer Angela Johnson. MKE Fellows and MMOA honor local leaders for Black History Month On February 28, 2022, Midwest Minority Officials Association (MMOA) hosted a special Black History Month salute for newly appointed WIAA Associate Director LeVar Ridgeway and new Alverno College head golf coach Richard Badger as part of a day-long salute to excellence and achievement at their brand new Associated Bank Center for Professional Development (ABC4PD) at 815 N. Water Street in downtown Milwaukee. The private reception and round table immediately followed the grand opening ribbon cutting ceremonies of the MKE Fellows ABC4PD where many business, educational, sports, media, and community leaders will be in attendance for public acknowledgment of "Butch Lee Day" in Milwaukee. In keeping with the spirit of Black History Month and in execution of Civic Engagement – one of the five core pillars upon which the MKE Fellows initiative is based – the event will serve to recognize outstanding achievement throughout the state. Samad's House Corp hosts 'Black Balloon Release Day' to recognize OD deaths On Sunday, March 6, 2022, Samad's House, a sober living home, hosted a "Black Balloon Release Day," to honor those that have lost their lives to drug overdoses and those who continue to suffer from the perils of addiction. According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, between January 1 and October 18, 2020 there was an all-time high of 435 confirmed drug overdose deaths. Unfortunately, Milwaukee County surpassed that number in 2021 with 560 reported overdose deaths. The increase was attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The zip codes most affected included 53212, 53219, 53207, 53214 and 53206.
