Communities making a difference -a town hall meeting The Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is hosting the "Communities Making a Difference" Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at North Division High School, 1011 W. Center St., from 10:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. This free and open event will feature a panel discussion with local and state elected officials as well as local service agencies. There will be a moderator for the panel and include questions from the audience. The meeting's goal is to inform and increase the awareness and importance of participation in the 2020 Census, voter registration and the Milwaukee elections, as well as focusing on housing help and sustainability for the "53206" community

in Milwaukee. According to the City of Milwaukee Mayor's office, Wisconsin receives approximately $12.6 billion annually in federal funding based on census data alone. Therefore, it's important to have dialogue in our communities to make sure that everyone is counted in Milwaukee in the 2020 Census including the under-counted populations of people of color, low-income individuals, homeless individuals, single parent households, and LGBTQ in-

What has this done to alleviate the lack of housing for the lower-income residents of our communities? What has this done to restore the city's housing programs and eviction crisis that still exist today? The Milwaukee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., will be asking all participants and guests to make a commitment to action regarding these challenges in hopes of greater participation in our communities and improved quality of life.

Being Frank

By: Frank James Special to the Milwaukee Times

Why I write “Man, who are you writing these articles for? People are happy and African Americans don’t want to hear what you are talking about.” This question and statement has been put to me several times over the past decades or so in some form or fashion. This usually happens after someone has read an article or when I did the television show Being Frank with Frank after watching the show. The question came up again during the last few days of Black History Month. This time I actually listened to the inquiry and had to ask myself, “Why do I write and seek to awaken black people who have become African Americans?” Hmm. Why do I write these problack, often viewed by many as negative, articles? Is it for the fame? Is it for the mon-

Americans know many of the things I write are true. Why then don’t they grasp the concepts and become black? It is easier to roll with the flow in 2020. African Americans have always rolled with the flow, even though the tide has washed them over the side of the boat. My goal is to generate thought. I guess African

ey? Is it for my enormous ego? Am I just an angry black man who is mad because everyone else has found a niche in the USA and I haven’t? Well let’s dissect my rationale and see where it leads us. Do African Americans want to hear some of the things that come out of my laptop? Probably not. In honesty, many African

Americans still remember how to think. Many African Americans are so inured and insinuated into the system they can’t stop oiling up the guillotine that is racing towards their necks. My goal is to let them know that the blade coming towards them is not a simple Bic shaver. Fame and money? Back when I was doing Being Frank with Frank I probably could have parleyed my talents into a job on television. It was never about the money or fame. What good is money if there is nothing worth buying? What good is fame if the people idolizing you are morons or sub-basic at best? I never could see myself charging black people for information that is theirs. Maybe one day I’ll put all the Being Frank articles into a book and publish it. Who knows? I still would be faced with the question, “Who would buy and read it?” Is it my enormous ego? Yes, I have an ego. What intelligent person who is confident doesn’t? When it comes to pro-black topics and knowledge I put ego aside in pursuit of information. Yet, maybe the ego is the reason I bang out these articles and post on Instagram every once in awhile. I’d like to believe the ego kicks in because I know I have information that may help black people in some fashion. Now why would I be an angry black man? Is it pos-

sible that I’m upset because I didn’t play pro sports? Or am I upset because I didn’t get the opportunity to lay face down on a casting couch? Not. Could it be that I am angry because I know black people are so much more than what they have allowed themselves to become? Maybe I’m angry that in 2020 African Americans still turn their children over to a racist education system to be programmed and the programmers are now black in skin tone? What about the fact that African Americans are still trying to integrate and assimilate with the people who have shown nothing but hatred for them? The reason I write. I’m Black. I’m a black man who still has an inkling of what it is to be free in between the ears. I write because there is someone who may not agree with me in public but does in their heads. I write because I don’t want negroes to miss the better day they have been praying for. I AM therefore I write. Can you dig it? The Counseling Corner

By Rev. Judith T. Lester, B.Min. M.Th

Spring into a healthy physical lifestyle On March 20, 2020, the season of Spring arrives. In baseball, Spring signals a time for preparation. Spring is also the season when the flower buds bloom, leaf buds appear on trees, animals who have been hibernating, awake, and gardeners begin planting their seeds as the temperature slowly warms. During Spring, everything is fresh and a time to start anew! One of the best ways of starting afresh is springing into a healthy physical and spiritual lifestyle. This month, I invite you to join me as I begin this series by presenting tips to encourage you to spring into a healthy physical lifestyle. The balance of the month, I will switch the focus to springing into a healthy spiritual lifestyle. What is a healthy lifestyle? 2020 Black Excellence Awards

35h Annual Black Excellence Awards Special Honorees: Women on the Leading Edge of Medicine

In last week's issue of the Milwaukee Times Special Black Excellence edition, Dr. Bridgett Moss, DO was cited as working for Ascension Healthcare. Shortly before the publication she moved to Froedtert Hospital. Here is her biography with the appropriate employer. hen she was nine W years old, a routine visit to the pediatrician’s of-

fice set Bridgett Moss on her path to becoming a physician. “I recall being a little apprehensive during that visit, but the doctor was very nice and let me listen to his heart with his stethoscope. That small act of kindness not only relaxed me but planted the seed for me to become a doctor. From that day on, becoming a doctor became my goal in life–to help people feel the same way I felt at that time,” she said. Today Dr. Bridgett Moss has achieved that goal, with the encouragement of family and friends. Originally

Dr. Bridgett Moss, DO Froedtert & The Medical College of WI from Milwaukee, Bridgett attended North Division High School because it was a medical specialty school at the time. Then she went to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for her undergraduate studies majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. She attended medical school at Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in

Iowa. “In choosing a medical school, I also wanted to have a medical background that represented me—one that was open to alternative avenues of treatment and training—like osteopathic medicine,” she said. During her years at UW-Whitewater, she was surrounded by support from the Educational Opportunity Program under the direction of Dr. Roger Pulliam, Dr. Elizabeth Ogunsola, Mrs. Freeda Briscoe and many others. She also received support from the

Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, which helps prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies. Bridgett recalls when her Organic Chemistry 2 professor decided not to give her a passing grade, which caused her to retake the class. He later told her that he could have passed her, however he wanted her to retake his class because he knew she could do better. “He saw my potential, so retaking the class was not meant as a punishment. I passed the class with an ‘A’ the second time and he had me assisting him in teaching,” she said. She later entered a family medicine residency at St. Luke’s Hospital where she was taught by Dr. Tito Izard, Dr. Alison Lux, Dr. Lisa Sullivan-Vetter, Dr. Janice Litza and many others who encouraged her. During her medical residency rotations, she had numerous attending physicians in different specialties that shared their knowledge with her; but one pediatrician, Dr. David Rosenberg, left a great impression on her. Not only did he enlighten her with his traditional/conventional medical knowledge, but he also reinforced her knowledge and interest in complementary and alternative medicine. She started her medical career at Milwaukee Health Services Inc., under the leadership of current CEO Dr. Tito Izard, where she treated the underserved and underinsured populations. She worked there for seven years which provided her with an unforgettable and phenomenal experience. She used that platform not only to give excellent quality care to patients but to be a mentor to many medical and nursing students and mid-level providers. When treating her patients, she took the approach of meeting patients where they were and allowed them to be a team player in their healthcare. She took pride in breaking communication barriers which she accomplished by being an active listener.

Although Bridgett no longer works for Milwaukee Health Services Inc., she continues to make an impact on the community by being an active board member. She recently completed a fellowship in Integrative Medicine from the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine in Tucson, Arizona and also recently received a fellowship distinction from the American Academy of Family Practice. In her personal life, Bridgett is married with two daughters. She currently works for Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin as a community physician. And, while juggling a demanding career, marriage and family, she still finds ways to pay it forward by helping other students pursuing careers in medicine. She allows medical students to shadow her and teaches residents and mid-level providers. “It’s a pleasure to talk and engage with them. It’s important for them to see someone who looks like them doing something positive in the community, so I tell my story freely. I believe that your life is a testimony to be able to help others that are experiencing similar situations. I had to work hard to get where I am. I want them to know that their environment does not stop them. "I encourage students to move forward to pursue whatever their goals are in life—whether it’s becoming a physician or another profession,” she said. Bridgett shared this bit of advice from her own experience: “Don’t stop! Whatever obstacles are in your way, jump over them. I don’t like the word ‘hard’, instead I use ‘challenge’. ‘Hard’ creates a barrier. Go after your passion. I’m trying to set that example for my daughters, nieces, nephews, other family members, friends and students. It may not be challenging, but keep moving forward to become whatever you want,” she said.

Discovering Our Deep Cultural Roots In The Arts

Twenty inspiring black women who are making history in 2020 (part 1) Each March, Women's History Month recognizes the ground-breaking achievements of women and women of color. Kaia Shivers, a liberal studies professor at New York University, helped Insider.com select a list of 20 female innovators and leaders who are making history and setting records. From entertainers to philanthropists, here are black women who will change the world in 2020.

Universal Pictures, and at just 13, was named an executive producer, making her the youngest in history. She is also producing and acting in another film, "Amari and the Night Brothers." In an interview with the LA Times, she gave her advice to others wanting to follow a similar path. "Believe in yourself. Push to your highest limit. Be confident that you can do it. If you take Chef Mariya Russell is the that one push to do it, then first black woman to earn God's got the rest. Just leave a Michelin Star. it up to Him," she said. Lizzo was the most nominated artist at the 2020 Grammys.

Russell is chef de cuisine at Kikkō, a Michelin-starred Japanese restaurant in Chicago. In September, she became the first black woman to be awarded a Michelin star in the Michelin Guide's 93year history. Originally from Springfield, Ohio, Russell became interested in food from a young age and began by cooking soul food and Midwestern staples, like mashed potatoes, fried chicken, and casseroles. She later moved to Chicago to attend The Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago. She and her husband went on to work together, eventually both joining Kikkō. In an interview with Michelin Guide, she said, "Thinking about [being] the only Black woman doing this is really, still very much so, blowing my mind. Representation is really important in all kinds of things, but in an industry like this, I think it's really cool." "Black-ish" star Marsai Martin is the youngest executive producer in history.

Marsai Martin, 15, started her role as Diane Johnson on the hit ABC TV comedy in 2014, when she was just 10. Two years later, she starred in her first film, "An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win," set in Detroit during the civil rights movement. She starred in "Little" for

Lizzo shot to fame in 2019 with the release of her third studio album, "Cuz I Love You." Her most played song was "Juice," but the success of the album popularized two of her previous singles, "Truth Hurts" and "Good as Hell," which were released in 2017 and 2016, respectively. In 2019, Time named the singer, dancer, and flutist Entertainer of the Year. She was nominated for eight awards at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in January 2020 and won three. Along with her work as a musician, Lizzo has been a champion for body positivity. After facing criticism for wearing a thong dress to a Lakers game, she took to Instagram to spread a message of acceptance: "Who I am, and the essence of me, and the things that I choose to do as a grown-ass woman, can inspire you to do the same. They don't have to be like me – you need to be like you, and never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself." History's most decorated track and field Olympian, Allyson Felix, stands up for maternity protections.

are gold, the most of any female track and field star. Even more incredibly, she won gold at the World Championships after becoming a mother in late 2018. But after Felix gave birth, she said her previous sponsor, Nike, offered her a 70 per cent pay cut, and in an op-ed for the New York Times, she exposed the poor maternity treatment she said she received from Nike. "Protection during maternity isn't just limited to Olympians; working women all over the US deserve protection when they have children. We shouldn't have to rely on companies to do the right thing. Our families depend on it," she wrote. After the outcry, Nike agreed to update future contracts with female athletes. Felix hopes to make her fifth Olympic team at the 2020 Games. Janet Mock, who will be honored at this year's GLAAD Media Awards, is championing transgender representation in the media. A transgender writer, pro-

ducer, and activist, Mock will receive the prestigious Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 2020 GLAAD Media Awards in March. Mock is a writer, director, and producer on the Golden Globe-nominated series, "Pose," which illuminates 1980s ballroom culture and its effect on media, fashion, and art of all kinds, while boasting the largest recurring cast of LGBTQ actors ever. In her book, "Redefining Realness," she said, "I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act. It is an act that can be met with hostility, exclusion, and violence. It can also lead to love, understanding, transcendence, and community." South Sudanese-Australian supermodel Adut Ake-

ch Bior is working with the UN to help refugees. A former child refugee herself, 20-year-old Akech was recently featured on Time's 100 Next List (the only model this year). She made her international debut walking for Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week, and in 2019, she was named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. In a recent interview with Vogue UK, she spoke on what it means to be a refugee. "You don't wake up thinking, I'm going to be a refugee," she said. "The only difference between a refugee and someone who grew up in the Western world is that we were forced out of our own country, out of our homes, because of fear – not out of choice." The Martin Luther King Economic Development Corporation (MLKEDC) is seeking proposals for the preparation of its yearly audited financial statements and related filings for a three-year period beginning with the 2019 fiscal year ending on December 31, 2019. Our organization does not require a federal single audit. The audit of MLKEDC’s financial statements must be performed in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. MLKEDC is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 1993 to revitalize the Harambee neighborhood in the City of Milwaukee. MLKEDC’s mission is to engage in entrepreneurial initiatives to create wealth and jobs, provide technical assistance to area businesses and develop quality, affordable rental and owner-occupied housing. Since 1998, the main focus of the organization has been on the development of affordable housing and commercial and office facilities that serve the Harambee neighborhood. Since its founding, MLKEDC has been directly responsible for over $50 million of real estate development which in turn has leveraged millions of dollars of additional investment in the surrounding neighborhood. MLKEDC owns and manages 190 affordable housing units, of which 142 are held in four different limited liability companies, some involving partnerships with other entities. These LLC’s are audited separately and are not the subject of this RFP, although the results of those audits may impact the audit of MLKEDC. MLKEDC is also involved in the ownership and management of approximately 75,000 sq. ft. of office and retail space, approximately half is managed directly by MLKEDC and half is managed through another entity. In addition to its management portfolio, MLKEDC is also engaged in new real estate development activity involving the acquisition and rehab of existing, single-family homes for resale to owner-occupants as well as the development of new, multi-family, mixed-use projects. MLKEDC has received government funding from Community Block Grant Administration of the City of Milwaukee, from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation and Office of Community Service in the federal Department of Health and Human Services. MLKEDC also multiple financial relationships with WHEDA. MLKEDC’s staff consists of two part-time staff. MLKEDC has total assets of approximately $15 million and our annual revenue has ranged between $970,000 and $1.2 million and over the past 3 years. MLKEDC requires the following services: 1. Annual financial statement audit. 2. Preparation of IRS form 990 3. Preparation of Charitable Organization Annual Report for the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions. 4. Management letter All of the above must be completed within 180 days of the end of each fiscal year, in order for our Board to review each document prior to its submission to the appropriate recipients. In addition, MLKEDC requires that a meeting of the auditors and select MLKEDC board and staff members be held to discuss a draft version of the financial statements and that the auditors meet at least yearly with the Board of Directors. All proposals must include: a) Evidence of the firm’s qualifications to provide the above services; b) Background and experience in auditing nonprofit clients involved in real estate development activity; c) The size and organizational structure of the auditor’s firm; d) Statement of the firm’s understanding of work to be performed, including tax and nonaudit services; f) A proposed timeline for fieldwork and final reporting; g) Proposed fee structure for each of the three years of the proposal period, including whatever guarantees can be given regarding increases in future years, and the maximum fee that would be charged; h) Describe your billing rates and procedures for technical questions that may come up during the year, or whether these occasional services are covered in the proposed fee structure; i) Names of the partner, audit manager, and field staff who will be assigned to our audit and provide biographies. j) A copy of your firm’s most recent peer review report, the related letter of comments, and the firm’s response to the letter of comments; and k) References and contact information from at least 3 comparable nonprofit audit clients. Your proposal must be received by end of day on March 15, 2020. Send your proposal to me at the MLKEDC office located at: Nicole Robbins, Executive Director RFP-Accounting Services 2745 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Suite 200 Milwaukee, WI 53212 The finance committee will review all proposals and make a recommendation regarding the choice of auditors to the full board of directors in (insert date). If you have any questions or would like further clarification of any aspect of this request for bid, please email nicole@mlkedcmke.org. I look forward to receiving your proposal. Sincerely, Nicole Robbins Executive Director An NCON Communications Publication
