YMCA hosts 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

On Monday, January 16, 2023, the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee and Aurora Health Care hosted their "26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration," at the Potawatomi Casino and Hotel, 1721 W Canal St. The event cerebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by recognizing community organizations that are dedicated to serving others and empowering local youth to let their voices be heard. Among those groups honored this year were STRYV365 who received the Healthy Living Award presented by Froedtert Health; Northcott Neighborhood House (bottom photo) who received the Social Responsibility Award presented by GE Healthcare; and three Youth Development Spoken Word Contest winners (middle photo, left), which was presented by Northwestern Mutual, Christopher Kaiser, Heritage Christian School; James Kelly, Jr., Milwaukee College Prep-Lloyd Street; and Cornel Penager Davidson, Wedgewood Park International School. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. honors King legacy with day of service at Repairers of the Breach

On Monday, January 16, 2023, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®, Epsilon Kappa Omega Chapter celebrated the 21st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at the Repairers of the Breach homeless resting site, 1335 W. Vliet St. More than100 center members were served a hot soul food meal including beverages, fruits and desserts. The program was the highlight for center members who participated in Black History trivia questions, spoken word poetry and songs with prizes for the competitive games. Bianca Willingham served as the event committee chairman and stated a celebration of Dr King’s life and legacy with event theme “We Are One”. Dr Tanzanique Carrington is chapter president and ToiLisa Mark-Lockett is chapter vice-president.

On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, Northcott Neighborhood House's Harambee Senior Club kicked off the new year by discussing visions and goals to promote peace and understanding in Milwaukee. The Northcott Neighborhood House Harambee Senior Club culminated the afternoon with a little fun having lunch and playing bingo.

Executive Director Tony A. Kearney, Sr., said, "At Northcott Neighborhood House, we value and appreciate our Senior/Youth/Intergenerational programming supported by Bader Philanthropies. Here at Northcott Neighborhood House we continually work to bridge the gap to keep our seniors safe in Harambee."

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County announces Danae D. Davis as the 2022 recipient of the Linda McFerrin African American Nonprofit Leadership Award

United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County is proud to announce Danae D. Davis as the recipient of the 2022 Linda McFerrin African American Nonprofit Leadership Award. Davis is the retired executive director of Milwaukee Succeeds.

The Linda McFerrin African American Nonprofit Leadership Award was established by United Way’s 2019-20 Board Chair Cory Nettles, founder and managing director of Generation Growth Capital, Inc., and his wife Michelle Nettles, chief people and culture officer at ManpowerGroup, in recognition of Linda McFerrin,

retired vice president of resource development, and her 42 years of leadership and service to United Way.

The recipient of this annual award is chosen by United Way’s Diversity Leadership Society and a $5,000 grant is made to the organization they represent. The winner is announced each year on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

“Danae’s has been a strong leader in this community for many years,” said Cory Nettles. “She has touched the lives of thousands of people in our area, removed barriers, and worked to change

systems.

Danae D. Davis joined the Greater Milwaukee Foundation in May 2015 and served as executive director of Milwaukee Succeeds, a citywide educational partnership the Foundation helped create. Milwaukee Succeeds is dedicated to ensuring the success of every child in every school in Milwaukee, cradle to career. She retired on November 18, 2022.

Davis previously spent nine years as CEO of PEARLS for Teen Girls, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that used a nationally recognized model girl empowerment and leadership development for adolescent girls ages 10-

19. Her career also has included leadership positions in both corporate and government sectors including Miller Brewing Company, Kraft Foods, and the city of Milwaukee.

Davis currently serves on the National StriveTogether board and local Kings Academy Christian School and Radio Milwaukee HYFIN advisory boards.

Davis’s award will be celebrated at the United Way Annual Meeting on February 23, 2023 at U.S. Bank Center, Downtown Kitchen beginning at 5:00 p.m.

We’ve just made it through an election cycle to choose members of Congress. In addition, we are gearing up for elections to choose various officials at the local level, such as aldermen, county supervisors and judges, between now and April 2023.

It would be nice to think that we could depend on those we elect to represent us to focus on the needs and work of the people, and empowerment of the citizenry – which is the whole premise of building ‘a more perfect union.’

However, elected officials at all levels seem to be more intent on advancing their own individual agendas, often at the expense of their opponents, ultimately squandering the resources and the trust of the American people. Instead of using their extensive access and acumen to benefit society and the greater good, their efforts are largely focused on their own needs and advancement.

Playing political ‘tit-for-tat’

People who enjoy petty squabbles can have a field day talking about who does and doesn’t have what documents and how long they’ve had them.

In my opinion, the real argument lies in the ambiguity and laxity of the rules and processes for ANYONE to handle and have access to classified government materials. Here’s a thought:

thing. They aren’t. Genetic ancestry is about where on the globe your relatives came from. Ethnicity means a group of people who share things like language, religious beliefs, or culture. People of the same ethnicity often share the same genetic ancestry. But this isn’t always the case.

We have set in motion a great celebration of freedom and justice, in honor of America’s hero and patriot, Martin Luther King, Jr.

When Martin began his career, the principles of social justice for which he stood were very controversial. But by the end of his career he was a widely respected leader of international stature, who helped lead an extraordinary revolution in America’s laws and customs. Martin’s moving example of dignity in the face of threats and hatred gave the whole nation a new hero to admire and emulate.

Martin knew that America’s democracy was not perfect. But he also knew that, when aroused, America’s conscience could be a powerful force for reform. His unique combination of moral leadership and practical political wisdom enlisted America’s conscience on the side of peaceful change.

His memory is engraved in the hearts and minds of his fellow Americans, and it is appropriate, as the President and the Congress have said, to remember and honor the values for which he stood. Each year, Martin’s national birthday celebration will rekindle in the hearts of all our people a new pride in America, a determination to make it an

even greater nation.

It will also spark a new appreciation for its son, who was born into a world where bigotry and racism still hold sway. But before he died, he

contributed immeasurably to the human rights of all people.

In my travels to the 50 states and U.S. territories as chairperson of the King Federal Holiday Commission, I find that Americans from all walks of life and every political persuasion share a common enthusiasm and excitement as we prepare to celebrate what has been called by President Reagan “A Celebration of Freedom and Justice to Unite All Our Citizens.”

There is a spirit of unity and good will sweeping this land. People of all races,religions, classes, politics and stations in life are coming

together and putting aside differences in a spirit of reconciliation to make Monday, January 20, 1985 “Martin’s Day,” a day of great national unity and renewed patriotism consistent with the non-violent tradition of the man we prepare to honor.

It was not too long ago that Martin painted a vivid picture of what an America united would look like...an America in which all children could grow up to realize their full potential. January 20, 1985 must be seen as a way to reflect that vision, a way to celebrate the life and legacy of a man with a dream for all seasons.

The special recognition accorded Martin by the American people provides a unique opportunity for all Americans to reaffirm their faith in nonviolence at a time when violence in all its ugly forms seems to be a way of life. It also gives Americans a special moment to reaffirm their support for Martin’s beloved community and for the values that distinguish our republic in this troubled world.

The commission has chosen “Living the Dream” as its theme for the birthday celebration. We see “Martin’s Day” - the third Monday of each year - as:

...a day to celebrate the life and dream of Martin Luther King, Jr...

...a day to reaffirm the American ideals of freedom, justice and opportunity for all...

...a day for love, not hate; for understanding, not anger; for peace, not war...

...a day for the family to share together, to reach out to relatives and friends and to mend broken relationships...

...a day when people of all races, religions, classes and stations in life put aside their differences and join in a spirit of togetherness...

...a day for our nation to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., who awakened in us the best qualities of the American spirit...

...a day for nations of the world to cease all violent actions, seek non-violent solutions and demonstrate that peace is not just a dream but a real possibility, if only for one day.

We have come too far to be discouraged or to lose hope or to stop believing in the dream. If we believe in the justice for which he died, if we embrace his dream of a community where we can all come to love and care for one another, we will strive to complete his unfinished agenda, we will make his unfinished work our own. Exactly 94 years ago to the day, a child was born in Atlanta, Georgia named Michael King, Jr., who would change the world. His father would eventually change his name in honor of the German leader of the Protestant Reformation, and it was by that name – Martin Luther King, Jr. – that the world would remember him nearly a century later.

Few names in modern American history ring more powerfully than Martin Luther King’s. He remains the only person born in the 20th Century for whom we celebrate a federal holiday. His name is synonymous with great speeches, with inspiring hope, and with the brutal assassination which took his life before he even reached the age of 40. His name is still invoked constantly in modern political discussions, and he arguably left a more profound, longer-lasting legacy than nearly any other American over the last century. When you think of great historical leaders, Martin Luther King’s name constantly makes the short list.

So what can we learn from Dr. King’s legacy? What knowledge can we apply to our own lives today to make the world a better place? It would be impossible to list all of them, but here are a few of the most important lessons from Dr. King’s life and legacy, as represented by some of the most powerful passages from his speeches: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness – only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate – only love can do that.” One of Dr. King’s most well-remembered quotes is also the one perhaps most relevant to our own lives. Our political system and even our popular culture are all heavily centered around the concept of conflict and hate. There is a whole industry in entertainment and politics built around the idea of outrage – we’re supposed to get mad at the people on the other side of the partisan fence, or we’re supposed to hate the celebrities who annoy us or do outrageous things. Hate may be an animating force –that is, it may get us out of our seats to do something,

but that “something” is hardly productive or positive. Our world won’t get better until we stop revolving our collective existence around hate, and our collective existence won’t get better until we personally make the choice to stop the cycle of hate and try to find common ground with all people.

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now… I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land.”

MLK said those prophetic

words the day before he died in a speech titled, “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop.” Reading those words 55 years later, after all of the ups and downs we’ve experienced as a society, you still can feel their power to lift us up and make us hope for something better. There’s also a lesson there for all of us: leadership is sometimes as simple as inspiring a shared vision. We want to be reminded that the world can be better, and sometimes it’s up to us as leaders to do the reminding. We may not have the platform of Dr. King, but all of us have the potential to lift others up.

four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” King’s most famous line was spoken nearly 60 years ago, but it still describes a future we have not yet attained. We still have much to learn in how we treat those different from us, whether the lines that separate us are gender, race, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation, or any other countless divisions which still exist, and which motivate people to act with fear or hate. We will always be a nation of many different types of people, and those differences should be celebrated and embraced –but we can also work toward a future in which those differences no longer cause us to push away our fellow humans.

Dr. King was a revolutionary leader in many respects, and this month we will take just 24 hours to celebrate his legacy. What we do after the celebration will determine our own legacy.

Martin showed how much good a single life, well led, can accomplish. Let Americans honor his memory by pledging in their own lives to do everything they can to make America a place where his dream of freedom and brotherhood and sisterhood will grow up and flourish and we can all be proud to sing with new meaning, “From every mountainside, Let freedom ring.”

Coretta Scott King, widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was chairperson of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission and President of The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. She died in 2006.

Being Frank

The world has once again celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. There is not a person in the USA who does not know who King is, or what he stood for. King is revered as one of the greatest African American leaders in the history of the world. In 2023 the African Americans he died for need to look back at two of his famous speeches in order to measure their progress.

Let’s start with the famous, "I Have A Dream" speech. This is the most famous of all of King's speeches. The speech detailed a concept of how whites in a few southern states would embrace African Americans as equals. If we look at 2023 to a certain degree this has taken place. In Mississippi progress has been made, even in the Delta region of the state. One example of this is the fact that Isola, MS has an African American mayor, Dimp Powell. Back when King was walking the planet the chances of this happening were literally slim to none. The

Celebrate the man

major universities in Mississippi have African American students who graduate with degrees in various fields. African Americans in Mississippi have made strides towards King’s dream.

King talked about equality in Alabama. An African American, Artur Davis, held a position in the House of Representatives and even ran for Governor of Alabama. This action would not have even been a thought in the 1960’s George Wallace era. Since King has died African Americans have been able to play football at the University of Alabama. The first player to receive time was John Mitchell in 1971. Since that time the University of Alabama has come to embrace African American student athletes. An African American, Jalen Hurts, became the first African American quarterback to win a national title for the university. In Alabama African Americans have made some progress toward King’s dream goals.

Let’s take a look at another King speech, "Which Way Its Soul Shall Go." If you have not heard of this speech do not fret. King delivered this speech in 1967 just scant months before he was assassinated in Memphis, TN. This speech included the one quote that African Americans needed to hear in order to achieve success in the USA. King stated, “I’m sorry to have to say that the vast majority of White Americans are racists, either consciously or unconsciously.” This statement by King is very rarely heard. I stumbled upon it while checking a link

for a 10th grade English assignment. Honestly, at first I couldn’t believe King said this because of some of his other quotes. African American progress or understanding of this statement by King is embarrassing.

Look back at any of the King Day celebrations you may have attended over the years. Was this quote the focal point of the festivities? I had to dig deep on Google just to find the quote again. I could easily find transcripts of many of King’s other speeches, not this one. Where would African Americans be if this quote about white people would have been embraced by them? Would African Americans still be chasing white acceptance while erasing their blackness in 2023? This quote delivered by King should have slapped reality into African Americans. Yet, you still see African Americans ignoring the truth that King put in simple layman’s terms. African American children are being mentally neutered via an education

system parents foolishly believe will make whites accept them. The progress African Americans have made, in regard to this quote, is a shame and a disgrace to King.

African Americans should celebrate King’s life and his achievements. African Americans, use one hand to pat yourselves on the back for the progress you have made toward manifesting some of King’s ideals. Use the other hand to slap yourselves in the face for not paying attention to one of the quotes that King gave his life to deliver to you.

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream lives in acts of justice big and small

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had to have known as he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech 60 years ago that the moment would change a nation.

After the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, King stood before a sea of 250,000 people gathered Aug. 28, 1963, below the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He rose to the occasion, departing from his prepared text to deliver a passionate message, words that would become the most pivotal and signature moment of the civil rights movement.

Today, America is better and more diverse than King could have envisioned back in 1963, when just weeks after his speech, four lit-

tle girls would die in the Sunday morning bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, a racially hostile and divided city known in the civil rights

movement as “Bombingham.”

For dreams to endure, however, they must transcend moments of doubt

and touch future generations whose accomplishments confirm the righteousness of the struggle. Had he lived to see 2023, King would have celebrated the symbolic breakthrough of a two-term president who shared his skin color, but he also would have shed bitter tears of anger and sadness over new legal scuffles over voting rights, crime in poor minority neighborhoods, seemingly intractable poverty, and the racial divisions among Americans over the death of George Floyd.

King also would have seen an America no longer defined almost exclusively in black and white but a nation of many hues, and one in which civil rights debates about opportunity and economic inclusiveness are filtered through a more complex lens.

King was right that day in 1963, when beneath the towering presence of the Great Emancipator, he said, “Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.”

Because many did exactly as he preached, their children and grandchildren are growing up in a nation that is closer to realizing King’s dream than the America he knew.

It is a trek that continues to this day. President Barack Obama’s speech in 2013 on the Lincoln Memorial to mark the 50th anniversary of King’s speech focused on civil rights and race relations.

Dallas City Council member Dwaine Caraway called for a conversation about race. And a racial-justice think tank held its national conference on race in North Texas.

Just as important are the simple daily ways that many Americans embody the spirit of the “dream speech” as they quietly mentor, inspire, and seek to cash the check of opportunity.

Sixty years later, the dream faces hurdles, just as it did on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial that historic day. In the spirit of King, it will overcome and endure.
