LIBRARIES ARE FOR BOOKS AND READING Relaxing Reads Research shows that reading reduces stress, can help lower your blood pressure and improve your memory. So make some time for yourself and drop in to our relaxing reads sessions where you don’t even have to pick up a book but can just listen to a selection of short readings to raise your mood and relax you. As part of International Women’s Day a cultural evening of opinions, stories, music and readings from the female perspective. This event is a partnership with East Dunbartonshire’s Women’s Heritage Group which was developed through the successful Made in Kirkintilloch Project. We will showcase a series of powerful monologues ‘Women of their Time’, inspired by stories of local women and their lives. We will celebrate women with a performance of music by Kirkintilloch Ladies Choir and listen to a series of illuminating short readings from female authors, recognising women’s historical, cultural and political contributions to society.
We welcome Jo Mango, an East Dunbartonshire based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She has performed internationally, including the Carnegie Hall in New York, South By South West festival in Texas, the Roundhouse in London, and numerous tours in Japan. She has collaborated

on performances with David Byrne, Roddy Woomble, Midge Ure and many others. Her co-writing includes notable collaborations with Scottish bands such as Teenage Fanclub (Baby Lee), Admiral Fallow (The Beetle in the Box), RM Hubbert, Rachel Sermanni, and most recently Siobhan Wilson (Little Hawk). Her second album, Murmuration (2012), was released to broad critical acclaim and more recently her notable series of socially conscious EPs has gained airplay across the BBC network with those broadcasting it including Guy Garvey and Stuart Maconie.

Readdressing the archive is a co-curated exhibition at Kirkintilloch Town Hall. It is a collaboration between artist/maker Myra Ostacchini and Kirkintilloch’s Embroiders’ Guild. The collaboration brings together the highly developed needlework skills of the Guild, which has been in existence for more than 25 years, with Myra’s cross-disciplinary
From Lion Foundry patterns and plans, to fine lace and lappet work, temperance reminiscences and Campsie Ware pottery, the Auld Kirk Museum and Archives offers inspiration for participants to research and respond to this extensive collection of objects, artefacts and photographs. The resulting works offer a contemporary take on heritage, developing traditional embroidery skills into new and diverse forms. A newly commissioned film and drawing and textile work by Myra Ostacchini forms part of the exhibition. SAVAGES An Exhibition by Ian Cook 300 years ago numerous incursions were made into the unchartered lands of the Americas and Mexico. Caught between the colonial aspirations of European powers and Jefferson’s resolve to oversee manifest destiny, the culture of many indigenous races came close to extinction. Across the waters in Africa and Asia there was unrestrained lust for riches both real and imagined. Despite this rapacious crusade the peoples of these continents prevailed, retaining their long-practised traditions. These elements, both historical and contemporary, provide the basis for this exhibition, and focuses on man’s connection to beasts, the environment and his sometimes tenuous relationship with his fellow human beings. This exhibition comprises historical, cultural and contemporary aspects of the peoples who still inhabit these lands and other continents. Despite the shameless treatment of them by our forefathers, they prevailed and, today, more than ever, are able to teach us a salutary lesson in how to save the Earth.
Highland Dissonance Saturday 15 February to Thursday 12 March An exhibition by Rowanne Eaton Lee and Rowan Flint, described by them: The feeling of standing at the feet of nature in remote areas of the highlands and vowing to yourself that you will go through whatever chaos life throws at you, just to go back there. We explore our surroundings, we feel our way through and we make connections. In this long running investigation, we have mapped out our individual experiences of the Scottish landscape spanning from a canoe residency where we made art on the shores of Loch Shiel in 2016 to our adventures now of making art in an ever impermanent landscape. We have seen our world change these last few years and this is how we feel about it.

Street Level Photoworks Scotland’s Far North Saturday 15 February to Thursday 12 March These three bodies of work from the late 1970s provide a unique insight into Scotland’s remote landscape, islands and people. Glyn Satterley’s series presents a document of life in the neglected area of Caithness and Sutherland at a time when the myth was much banded about that the oil industry brought wealth and prosperity to the whole of Scotland. Chick Chalmers ‘Orkney’ project and Tom Kidd’s ‘Shetland’ both present fascinating photographic insights of these island archipelagos at a time of change with the effects of the oil industry on the traditional life of these cultures. Candid and sympathetic, the images show that Scotland’s Far North managed to take its place in the modern world without losing too many of the customs and traditions which give these places their special character and ethos.

An inspiring exhibition of traditional drawing and painting, sculptural and conceptual ideas translating our young people’s vision for the future. A highlight show for families and young people in East Dunbartonshire. The annual exhibition allows the young people of East Dunbartonshire, the use of a professional exhibition setting and platform to highlight their views, aspirations and talents through creativity.

The Scottish Photographic Circle Since its inception in 1907, the aim of the Scottish Photographic Circle - a small group of dedicated photographers - has been to promote the art of contemporary and pictorial photography in Scotland. The quality and diversity of subject matter in this year’s exhibition suggests that the present membership is continuing to succeed in the achievement of this objective. ‘Love & Whisky’ - The Story of Rita Cowan and Masataka Taketsuru (The Mother and Father of Japanese whisky) Local Kirkintilloch girl, Rita Cowan’s love and devotion bridged race and country to develop a strong tie between Kirkintilloch and Yoichi, Japan, and helped the start of the first real whisky in Japan, NIKKA.

Milton of Campsie Art Club Milton of Campsie Art Club’s first exhibition of 2020 will display recent work by members of this vibrant and enthusiastic group of amateur artists. If you’re a Gaelic learner, or you’d just like your toddler to learn a new language, why not bring your baby or toddler to Gaelic Bookbug Sessions with Sarah. Carefully-chosen songs, stories, rhymes and props are used so that words are easily learned by beginners or nonGaelic speakers. Sessions are free and there’s no need to book. Please check with venue before attending your first session as dates may vary.

A fun, story-inspired parent and child session where we explore a picture book with songs, drama games and instruments. Ending with a soothing sensory activity, Story Stars is a lovely way to spend time with your child. Each session costs £1.50 per child and must be booked in advance.
Science Makers 5-12 years Valentine Crafts 5 years + We’ll be sharing the love this February break with a fun craft activity. Free, but please book your place.
7-11 years Get hands-on with experiments and technology at Science Makers. We’ll have a different theme each week so there will always be something new to discover! Sessions run in blocks and are free, but please book your place.

Mad about Minecraft? Want to trade tips and show off your builds? Weekly Minecraft Club is the place for you! All you need is to bring a device with Minecraft installed. Sessions need to be booked in advance and cost £2 per child.
VR Saturdays 9 years + Discover new dimensions, step out of reality and leap into another world! From space travel to deep sea diving, there’s lots to explore at this drop-in activity.
Homework help with Britannica Library!
Code Club 9-11 years Come and join us at Code Club where we explore a variety of coding projects using Scratch to create your own interactive stories, games and animation. Everyone is welcome, from beginners to those with some previous experience of coding. Sessions run in blocks and are free, but booking is essential.
Britannica Junior (ages 5-12) and Britannica Student (ages 12-18) are brilliant and reliable resources for homework, school projects and course work. Each version provides access to thousands of age-appropriate articles and illustrations covering most subject areas, a dictionary and thesaurus, a world atlas, quotations, video clips, timelines, country comparisons, the year in review, online journals and news bulletins.
