About the Book

Toledo Yacht Club and the Mills Race Committee are proud to present the 99th running of the Invitational Mills Trophy Race. Special thanks to Myron Shapiro and Brooke Genson for their support and contributions to this unique racing program.

About the Logo

In 2008, we introduced an annual Mills Trophy Race logo. This year’s logo was prepared by the fine folks at CXG, Columbus, Ohio. Mills Trophy Race skipper, Brett Langolf, is CEO of Content Experience Group and we thank him for coordinating the logo development. See their ad elsewhere in this book.

Eight Bells

Over the last 40 years, we have been fortunate to have a loyal base of sailing enthusiasts who support the Mills Trophy Race year after year. Sadly, last year we lost two Mills Masters and more recently TYC Past Commodore Ron Gabel, club historian and keeper of all the Mills trophies. Please see the Chairman’s letter for details.

Message from the Chairman

2023 Mills Chairman Message Ninety-Nine and Counting!

Heading toward historical milestones, such as the 100th Mills Trophy Race next year, is a credit to all the participants, sponsors, and committee volunteers that have supported the Mills Trophy Race over the years. This year we celebrate the 99th running of the Invitational Mills Trophy Race. Thanks to all who have sailed with us in the past, and to those of you who are joining us for the first time (don’t forget to check the First Time Entry box on your Yacht Scoring registration).

Make sure you check out the 2023 Mills Trophy Race Sailing Instructions (SI’s) at www. yachtscoring.com for the details of the race courses and the Class Flags to be used on the start boat to identify the order of starts.

The PHRF rating to qualify for the President’s Trophy Course has been lowered from 165 to 150 and above, and the Mills Trophy Course and the Governor’s Trophy Course correspondingly lowered PHRF rating to 147.

As always, the SI’s are the official rules governing the race, and take precedence over any “general information” sections of this program.

Principle Race Officer Steve Harris from Put-in-Bay Yacht Club and Buckeye Lake Yacht Club and his BLYC and PIBYC race management teams will again be starting us at the Toledo Harbor Light and recording finishes at Put-in-Bay. Thanks to Al and Linda Minsterman for continuing their DRYA finish line support.

This year we are happy to announce the 2023 Honorary Chairmen, David Ryan, Jr. A Mills Master, Mills Race Committee and Mills Trophy Race Class Winner, Dave sails the C&C33 Chasseur as a member (and Past Commodore) of Monroe Boat Club and Catawba Island Club (see his article later in this issue).

Also hope you enjoy the continuing three-decade retrospective highlighting photos from 1993, 2003, and 2013 (See the “Do You Remember…” features).

Sadly, in the last year, we lost two Mills Masters Jimmy Walczak, long time Sea Turtle sailing buddy of Mark Weiss and Jim Monaghan. Most recently we lost TYC P/C Ron Gabel. Commodore Gabel was not only the club Historian, but also the keeper of all Mills Trophy Race history as well as guardian of all the Mills trophies. Rest in Peace, Commodore.

Wishing you the best for a safe and successful 2023 Mills Trophy Race.

Smooth Sailing,

As the Mayor of Toledo, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our city once again as you gather to celebrate and kick off the 99th running of the historic Mills Trophy Race. Greetings

99th and Counting!

On behalf of the Toledo Yacht Club Bridge Officers, Board of Trustees, and General Membership; it is my privilege to welcome you, our sailing friends, to the 2023 Mills Trophy Race. This year we celebrate the 99th running of this historic race, recognized as one of the premier sailing events held on the Great Lakes. It is a pleasure for the Toledo Yacht Club to host this outstanding event.

As the 118th Commodore of the Toledo Yacht Club, I would like to extend a special thanks to the Mills Race Committee, the TYC membership, and the countless volunteers for their tireless efforts and loyal support which make this event so enjoyable for all who participate. The long hours of planning and preparation do not go unnoticed and assure that a wonderful weekend will take place for all who participate. This annual night race is an event which is “designed for sailors to bring out the best in sailors” and would not be possible without the participation of so many. To you sailors, we thank you for supporting the event year after year to make this such an incredible event. From the 1907 beginning to today, we sincerely appreciate your continued support

As Commodore of Toledo Yacht Club, I recognize the special partnership which we share with the Mills Trophy Race. This rich history dates back well over 100 years and we are extremely proud to still share this prestigious race with all our dedicated sailors and generous sponsors. From our growing list of Mills Masters (25 years racing plus) to the highly skilled racers who regularly attend the Mills Trophy banquet, where nearly 40 historic trophies are engraved for their new recipients, this is truly a special event. As we approach the 100 th running next year, please take time to reflect on the significant history-making racing event you are taking part in and enjoy the moments.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the many Mills Race activities throughout the weekend both at TYC and at “The Bay”. As always, it promises to be a special celebration which is sure to be enjoyed by all.

May everyone have a very safe voyage and great tales of camaraderie to follow. See you at the Frosty’s Finish Line!

The safety of a yacht and her crew is the sole and inescapable responsibility of the owner or skipper who must insure that the yacht is fully sound, thoroughly seaworthy and manned by an experienced crew who are physically fit. The skipper of the yacht must be satisfied as to the soundness of the hull, spars, rigging, sails and all gear. The skipper must insure that all equipment is properly maintained and stowed. 2023 Honorary Chairman: David Ryan, Jr.

I am honored and humbled to have been nominated as the 99th Mills Trophy Race Honorary Chairman. My sailing began in high school when I bought a 14’ Hobie Cat and learned to sail on the inland lakes of the Irish Hills. The summer following college, my father took me on a drive along Lake Erie’s southern shoreline, stopping into various boatyards and I found my first keelboat, a Catalina 27.

Cruising in the Catalina 27 “Elan”, I was soon introduced to racing aboard Dick and Ann Hamilton’s Pearson 26 at Sandusky Sailing Club in Sandusky Bay. I remember phoning Dick from work one afternoon because it was raining, and I was asking him if we were going to race that evening! He thought that was a pretty funny question. My first Mills Race was aboard Dick’s “Annie Also” in 1987, and it was that very race when I discovered a love of nighttime navigation and competition. Navigating was by dead reckoning with a wristwatch, compass and speedo (without today’s full color GPS or even Loran), all of a sudden the red flashing light of Starve Island Reef was directly in front of us and I was hooked.

While docking in a cold breezy rain at Put-In-Bay one day, I met Paceship-26 sailor Bill Loeffler from Catawba Island Club and became long-time dock mates with Bill on the starboard side and his nephew Tim McKenna on the port. My great dock mates have turned into lifelong friendships, and we energized a fun and entertaining CIC racing program featuring pursuit starts and a Cox-Sprague scoring system as well as a summer racing series

named after Gordon Adams, the club’s first sailing Commodore.

At Monroe Boat Club, John and Michelle Glanville invited me to race Tuesday nights aboard their Cal 25 “Cherry Bomb” and we eventually co-founded the MBC Solo Challenge, which we think was Lake Erie’s first singlehanded race sponsored by a yacht club. I have served as MBC Sail Fleet Captain and was MBC Commodore in 2015.

Eventually buying a C&C 33 “Chasseur”, and currently racing with Jerry Porter on the J/105 “Relentless”, I actively race both short-course and longer distance races including BayviewMackinac, Trans-Erie Races, I-LYA Regatta’s and 34 Mills Races. I’ve been fortunate to have sailed the St. Lawrence Seaway as well as the Pacific, Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and Adriatic Seas.

I’ve tried to assist sailors through years of volunteering at the club level and with PHRF-LE holding the current position of chairman. I’ve been a USSA principal race officer that needs to renew my certification and I am very privileged to have served competitive sailors in the region as a member of the Mills Trophy Race Steering Committee.

Each Mills Race holds a special place in my heart. The great crews I’ve been a part of, the everchanging Lake Erie conditions, the unmatched hospitality of the Toledo Yacht Club, PIBYC, and the graciousness of Race Chairman Ron and Kaye Soka make the Mills Trophy Race truly an icon of the Great Lakes and a race by sailors, for sailors!

For the 99th running of the Mills Trophy Race, the Mills Race Committee is proud to announce the Frosty’s Finish Line and our Mills Partnership with the Frosty Bar leading up to the 100th Mills Trophy Race. Many of our Mills racers have a scheduled stop at Frosty’s as part of their Mills Race tradition and we look forward to expanding on that tradition for many years.

Located in the heart of downtown Put-in-Bay, Frosty’s has been an island tradition for 70 years. Cold beer served in the signature frosty beer mug, peanut shells crunching underfoot, tasty pizza baked fresh to order, and classic rock tunes from the jukebox are all part of what makes Frosty’s a favorite. Native islanders, boaters, day trippers, and racing sailors alike flock to Frosty’s for the Bloody Marys and the beautiful view of DeRivera Park and the Put-in-Bay harbor.

Part of what makes Frosty’s so special is the Stoiber family and the extended family of college-age employees that serve breakfast, pizza, and beer all summer. Stop in and see us at Frosty’s. We’re glad you’re here!

US Sailing

Our mission is to increase sailing participation and excellence through education, competition and equal opportunity, while upholding the principles of fair play, sportsmanship and safety.

Originally organized as the North American Yacht Racing Union (NAYRU) on October 30, 1897 to encourage and promote yacht racing, and to unify the racing and rating rules in the United States and Canada and throughout the yachting world. For racing sailors, US Sailing provides an equal level playing field by training and certifying race officials, judges, and umpires and by ensuring standardized rules and sailing instructions.

Safety on the water is an essential part of US Sailing’s training programs, including powerboat courses. Our Safety at Sea Courses are required by many offshore regatta organizers. US Sailing could not achieve its mission without the ongoing support of its members and volunteers. Our members have a shared passion for this lifelong sport.

Storm Trysail Club

The Storm Trysail Club is a private club dedicated to blue water sailing. Membership of about 1000 individuals is by invitation only to expert offshore sailors who have experienced storm conditions and are capable of commanding a sailing vessel in such conditions. Established in 1938, the club has a long history of sponsoring inshore, distance and offshore sailboat races, and supporting the interests and needs of sailors.

The purpose of the Club is to promote good fellowship among blue water sailors and ocean racing yachtsmen, and to encourage the sport of ocean racing and offshore cruising.

The club is headquartered in Larchmont, New York, and operates through local stations across the U.S. Each station serves as the organizing authority and host for a number of racing, social and junior events for its members and other sailors. The club has been in the vanguard of development of new events, handicap rating systems, yacht design, safety procedures, and new rum drinks, as well as ongoing support for the Invitational Mills Trophy Race since 1981.

2022 Mills Trophy Winner: Roadkill - N.

Lintunen & B. Naysmith

ROADKILL

Owners/skippers: Nick Lintunen / Blaic Naismith

Navigator: Blaic Naismith

Crew: Brian Dawse, Denny Meagher, Brandon Noland, Christina Noland

On-shore Support: Heather Naismith, Brandy Tower

After a two year hiatus due to border closures it was amazing to get back to North Cape Yacht Club, Toledo Yacht Club and Put In Bay. We missed our friends and the fantastic racing we have available in western basin of Lake Erie.

The team this year on Roadkill is a long-term group of friends. Although we don’t all race regularly together on the Olson 30, over the last 15 years we’ve all logged a lot of racing miles together on a variety of boats. Onboard we had co-owners Nikolas Lintunen and Blaic Naysmith, friend and fellow Olson 30 owner Brian Dawes, and our “American friends” Denny Meagher, Brandon Noland and Christina Noland. I believe the group has somewhere in the neighbourhood of 80 years of combined Mackinaw race experience. Our shore crew this year was our third co-owner and regular bow person Heather Naysmith, Brandy Tower and the next generation of crew in tow. As some of us have decided to become adults and start families, I’m quickly learning that shore crew and babysitting logistics are a critical part of racing success.

The first leg started off with a run and ended with a light and fluky beat. Our boat excelled in the light conditions and we rounded East Outer in the lead pack. The 2nd leg to West Sister produced more light and fluky conditions before turning into a moderate air pole on the forestay spinnaker reach. This was not our time to shine and we were promptly passed by the majority of the fleet, rounding with eventual runner up Wizard. Jeff Mackey and crew have been close competitors of ours since we purchased Roadkill in 2015 and it was good to see them out there. West Sister to Sandusky was upwind in a 10-15 knot shifty easterly. Our pre race plan was to try and stay leveraged to the south of the fleet in anticipation of a shift in that direction. After rounding Scott Point Shoal we got onto port tack towards the southern shoreline. After digging in we flopped onto starboard and over the next 7 miles were lifted about 30 degrees, bringing us within 3 boat lengths of laying R2. The remainder of the race was more running and beating, crossing the finish line at first light. Motoring into the harbor we didn’t see any familiar masts, which is always a good sign. Things were starting to look up, but for the moment thoughts turned to a post race rum followed by a nap.

Our appreciation goes out to the Mills Trophy Race committee and the army of volunteers that it takes to run the premiere race on Lake Erie. Good luck and good sailing to all 2023 competitors.
