Morgan Scalley Defensive Coordinator Safeties 15th Year

In his 15th year overall, Morgan Scalley is in his seventh season as Utah’s defensive coordinator. He has coached the safeties his entire time on the staff, was the recruiting coordinator from 2009-15 and the special teams’ coordinator in 2015. Scalley, who owns a reputation as one of the brightest defensive minds in the business, was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2019, when the Utes ranked second in the FBS in total defense. Utah has led the Pac-12 five times in the last six seasons in rushing defense, and ranked top five in the nation in rushing defense in 2018 and ‘19. The 2016 and ‘21 Utes led the conference in sacks and tackles for loss. He has coached nine AllAmericans, 16 first-team all-conference players and two Freshman All-Americans, seeing 29 of his protégés move on to the NFL.

Andy Ludwig Offensive Coordinator Quarterbacks 4th/8th Year

Andy Ludwig is in the fourth year of his second full-time stint on the Utah staff. Ludwig, who served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach during the undefeated 2008 season, made his return in 2019. Ludwig spent the 2015-18 seasons as Vanderbilt’s offensive coordinator following a two-year run at Wisconsin (2013-14), two years at San Diego State (2011-12) and two years at California (2009-10). He had a four-year period as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah (2005-08), which followed three years in the same role at Oregon (2002-04). Since the return of Ludwig, Utah has finished top-three in the Pac-12 in passing efficiency twice (2019, 2021) and led the Pac-12 in rushing offence twice (2019, 2021). In his time at Utah, he has coached 38 all-conference selections, including 11 first-teamers.

Jim Harding Assistant Head Coach Offensive Line 9th Year

Entering his ninth season as the offensive line coach, Jim Harding has also served as Utah’s assistant head coach (2017-present) and co-offensive coordinator (2015-16). He has coached six first-team All-Pac-12 selections and Morris Award winners Isaac Asiata (2016) and Nick Ford (2021). Harding has produced six NFL draft picks, including four members of the 2016 offensive line, and at least one in three of the past six years. Harding’s linemen have blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher in seven of the last eight seasons. Garrett Bolles (2016) and Bam Olaseni (2021) have both earned second team All-America honors. He came to Utah after five seasons at Wyoming as an offensive line coach and cooffensive coordinator (2013). Chad Bumphis Wide Receivers 2nd Year

Second-year wide receivers coach Chad Bumphis was a graduate assistant coach at Utah in 2018. He coached the receivers at Austin Peay in 2019, when the team ranked 20th nationally in passing yards. He was an offensive graduate assistant at Buffalo in 2017 and the wide receivers coach at Iowa Wesleyan in 2016. Bumphis played at Mississippi State from 2009-12, set the school record for receiving touchdowns (24) and ranks second in career receiving yards (2,270). Bumphis signed as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2013 and finished his professional career with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos in 2015.

Luther Elliss Defensive Tackles 1st Year

Former Utah AllAmerican Luther Elliss will begin his first season as the defensive tackles coach. Elliss arrived with the Utes after spending the last five seasons (2017-21) at the University of Idaho as the defensive line coach. Elliss played collegiately at Utah from 1991-94, earning consensus All-America honors and WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 1994. He also earned three all-conference selections while in Salt Lake City. Elliss was selected 20th overall in the 1995 NFL Draft, starring for the Detroit Lions for nine seasons. During his career in the NFL, he started 119 of 134 regular-season games and had 331 tackles and 29 sacks. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1999 and 2000.

Quinton Ganther Running Back 1st Year

Utah alum Quinton Ganther is in his first year as Utes’ running backs coach. Ganther, who spent the 2021 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the offensive quality control coach, led the Weber State running backs room from 2013-20. The two-time All-Mountain West selection played two seasons at Utah after transferring from Citrus Junior College as a JUCO All-American. In 2004 for the Utes, he rushed for 654 yards and was a part of the Utah team that finished 12-0 and won the Fiesta Bowl. As a senior in 2005, he rushed for 1,120 yards and seven touchdowns with his 1,120 yards still ranking in the top 12 all-time at Utah in singleseason rushing yards. A seventh round NFL draft pick in 2006 by Tennessee, Ganther spent six years in the NFL.

Lewis Powell Defensive Ends 8th Year

Lewis Powell is in his eighth season as a Ute assistant coach and seventh working with the defensive line. His primary responsibility is the defensive ends. Powell has coached two All-Americans, four All-Pac-12 defensive linemen and eight NFL players since his return to Utah in 2015. Hunter Dimick was a second-team AllAmerican in 2016. Bradlee Anae was a consensus All-American and won the Pac-12’s Morris Trophy as the best defensive lineman in 2019. Utah has led the Pac-12 in rushing defense five times under Powell and ranked in the top 20 in the FBS in each of the past four years. He coached the defensive line at Hawaii from 2012-14. He started his career at Utah as a graduate assistant from 2009-10 and an administrative assistant in 2011.

Sharrieff Shah Cornerbacks Special Teams Coordinator 11th Year

Sharrieff Shah is in his 11th season coaching the cornerbacks and fourth year as the special teams coordinator after serving three years as the co-coordinator. Shah has sent five cornerbacks to the NFL, and coached Jaylon Johnson to All-America and first-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2019. Nine Ute corners have earned All-Pac-12 honors during his tenure. He also has a first-team All-America punt returner and a Freshman All-America punt returner to his credit. The cornerbacks were instrumental in Utah ranking second in total defense and No. 1 in pass efficiency defense in the Pac-12 in 2020. Shah was cited by ESPN.com in 2014 as one of “10 coaches who adapt and thrive.” He was a practicing attorney before becoming a coach at Utah.

Colton Swan Linebackers 4th Year

Colton Swan is in his fourth year coaching Utah’s linebackers. In his time with the Utes, Swan has tutored All-America linebacker Devin Lloyd to a first-round NFL Draft selection, plus two others to free agent signings in Francis Bernard and Nephi Sewell. His players have also earned six first-team All-Pac-12 awards. Devin Lloyd finished his career as the 10th consensus All-American in program history, and also was recognized at the Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. Utah has led the Pac-12 in rushing defense for the past four years. Swan spent the previous 15 years at Weber State, working with the linebackers for seven. He was the Wildcats’ co-defensive coordinator from 2009-11.

Freddie Whittingham Tight Ends Recruiting Coordinator 7th Year

Now in his seventh season as Utah’s tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator, Freddie Whittingham has helped develop Utah’s roster for the past 10 years. In the past three seasons, the tight ends have accounted for over 32 percent of Utah’s receiving yards and 25 touchdowns. They have also helped Utah lead the Pac-12 in rushing defense in two of the last three years. Brant Kuithe, a three-time All-Pac-12 tight end, led the team in receiving yards 2019 and ’21. Before moving to the sidelines, Whittingham was Utah’s director of player personnel from 2012-15, managing all aspects of recruiting administration and organization, directing camps and clinics, and serving as the program’s NFL liaison. He is the younger brother of Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham.
