NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to a season like you’ve never seen before! During my 21 years with Tuacahn, there have been many amazing productions come and go, but a few will forever stand in my mind as monumental, including the first time we produced Les Misérables in 2008. Not only is Les Misérables the ultimate story of justice and mercy, and one of the most compelling themes ever written, our opportunity to produce this iconic piece launched us into the next phase as a theater company and we’ve been growing ever since. With such an important backstory, it has been a thrill to watch this unparalleled production come to life in our spectacular Outdoor Amphitheatre once again, this time alongside two other equally phenomenal shows: Grease and Disney & Pixar’s Finding Nemo: a Family Musical. Truly it has been a season unlike any we’ve done before. And it’s not over yet! This year, we are excited to offer two more top-tier productions inside the Indoor Hafen Theatre beginning Nov. 20 with Holiday Inn and then in January 2027 don’t miss Tuacahn’s first non-musical offering, The Play That Goes Wrong. Each of these productions honor the high-quality, professional experience audiences have come to expect from Tuacahn, but in a more intimate setting. While Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn brings the Christmas spirit to the forefront of people’s minds, The Play That Goes Wrong will have everyone laughing to the point of tears in this piece that is pure farce and fun. Perhaps even more notable than this season’s lineup, however, is the fact that Tuacahn consistently offers Broadway-level quality shows, at a fraction of the price of admission. We are so fortunate to have the best patrons in the business, audiences who have come to expect the highest levels of acting, directing, and technical elements from everything on our stages. That expectation that continues to push us to new heights year after year and this year is no exception; in fact, so far, it’s setting a new standard for the many years to come. We can’t wait for you to keep enjoying!

Sincerely, Scott S. Anderson Producing Artistic Director

Shari performed the role of Ulla and every other female role in Mel Brooks’ The Producers on the Broadway National Tour as well as the Las Vegas production with Tony Danza and David Hasselhoff. Shari was an assistant choreographer to five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman for the historic Hollywood Bowl’s production of The Producers and performed the role of Shirley Markowitz. JASON GRANT (Production Manager) holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of Louisville and an MFA in Theater Management and Production from Yale University. He has worked with respected theater companies and venues across the country, translating artistic visions into productions that open on time and run

smoothly. Known as the calm in the storm—and occasionally being the storm when needed— Jason specializes in solving problems before they reach the stage. His work ranges from managing union crews and wrangling flying sets to handling last-minute lighting changes and vanishing props, all with a spreadsheet in one hand and coffee in the other. With a background that blends technical expertise and project management, Jason is often described as part technician, part therapist, and part time traveler (making deadlines appear out of thin air is a specialty). Outside of the theater, he enjoys long motorcycle rides on open roads, especially after a long tech week. TROY MCGEE (Technical Director) started his Tuacahn career performing on stage, first in ’08 with Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller, then in the ’09 Tuacahn Broadway season. When he came back the following season, he spent time in between rehearsals helping out as a carpenter in the Scene Shop. Alain was nominated on 14 July 2024 to the Légion d’Honneur in France in recognition of his service to the arts in the world. CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHÖNBERG (L: Author) Born in 1944 to Hungarian parents, ClaudeMichel Schönberg began his career in France as a singer, writer and producer of pop songs. In collaboration with Alain Boublil, he is the book co-writer and the composer of La Révolution Française, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen. In 2008, his musical Marguerite, in collaboration with Alain Boublil, Michel Legrand and Herbert Kretzmer, opened at the Haymarket Theatre in London. Schönberg has supervised overseas productions and co-produced several international cast albums of his shows. In 2001, he composed his first ballet score, Wuthering Heights, which was created by the Northern Ballet in 2002. His ballet Cleopatra, which opened in 2011, was his second collaboration with David Nixon and his seventh complete score. In 2012, Schönberg co-wrote the screenplay and reconceived the music for the Les Misérables musical movie. His shows have won many awards over the years, most recently the WhatsonStage audience awards for Best West End Show and Best Musical Revival for the London production of Miss Saigon. Golden Globe winner, Oscar nominee and Grammy Award winner for his outstanding contribution to the creative community, Schönberg and Alain Boublil were honoured at a New York Pops gala concert in Carnegie Hall celebrating their 40year collaboration. Schönberg was appointed Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford University and is now an Emeritus Fellow. He is the father of one son and two daughters. JIM JACOBS who created Grease (in 1970) with Warren Casey, was born and raised on the mean streets of Chicago’s far northwest side. During the golden era of rock ’n’ roll (1956-1960) he was a guitar-playing “greaser” student at Taft High School. In 1963, Jacobs met Warren Casey when

56

they were both cast in a local theatre production of A Shot in the Dark. Seven years later they wrote what was to become one of the greatest musicals of all time. Grease opened in 1971 in a former trolley barn called the Kingston Mines Theatre in Chicago. A year later, Grease made it to Broadway and “Greasemania” took off, resulting in one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. The 1978 movie became and long remained the highest-grossing movie musical of all time. WARREN CASEY was born in Yonkers, New York, and attended Syracuse University. During the late ’50s, he learned all about “greasers” while working as an art teacher in upstate New York. He moved to Chicago in 1962, where he hoped to pursue an acting career. He appeared in dozens of productions, including creating the role of Bernie Litko in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago. He supported himself with jobs in retail, including working as an assistant manager of a chain of apparel stores, and as a record salesman. In the meantime, he taught himself how to play the guitar and began writing songs. Mr. Casey acted with the Chicago Stage Guild (where he met Jim Jacobs), the Old Town Players, and the Kinston Mines Theatre. The latter company staged the original production of Grease, which he wrote with Jim Jacobs. After the incredible success of both the musical and the movie, the two collaborated on Island of Lost Coeds, a musical satire of the B-movies of the 1950s. Mr. Casey died in 1988. ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE

S S

OUR STORY By Lisa Larson

itting with a view of the majestic present-day Tuacahn Amphitheatre, it’s hard to imagine its primitive beginning. Yet just as this natural amphitheatre was shaped by centuries of scorching heat and desert rain, so too has the history and future of Tuacahn Center for the Arts been molded by winds of change and the shaping power of dreams. Built on the shoulders of Orval Hafen (the original owner of Padre Canyon) as well as the unparalleled drive and ambition of Doug Stewart and Hyrum W. Smith, a seemingly impossible dream blossomed into the reality that exists today. Tuacahn owes its success to the hard work and sacrifice of an ensemble cast who each played an integral role in the history of this magnificent place. It was 1995 when Tuacahn’s debut performance of Utah! danced its way out of the red rocks and into the hearts of the people of southern Utah. After four years telling the complex story of the

58

area’s ancient inhabitants and pioneer settlers, it became increasingly clear Tuacahn needed to shift its strategy. “We’re proud of what we accomplished with Utah!,” says Kevin Smith, Tuacahn CEO. “But after several years of one show it was clear that people wanted to see something new.” The answer came in 1999 in the form of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Tuacahn found itself in the enviable position of huge crowds and sold out houses and Broadway in the Canyon was born. Since that time, Tuacahn has produced more than 60 Broadway shows, taking full advantage of the theater’s outdoor space and making talent, directorial and technical strides year after year. Among the many pivotal moments in Tuacahn’s history, hiring Scott Anderson as the artistic director in 2005 proved to be critical. Anderson’s enthusiasm TUACAHN.ORG

ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE and ability to cast a wider audition net — including more contracts with Actors Equity League of Regional Theaters — and pushing outside the box in terms of what people thought Tuacahn could produce, yielded some very prosperous results. Tuacahn’s 2008 success as one of the first regional theaters to be granted the professional rights to produce Les Misérables put Tuacahn on the map in a whole new way. The show’s success made it possible to forge several key relationships, the first licensed regional theater outside of Broadway to produce Disney’s Tarzan. Subsequent licensing agreements with Disney to produce The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, When You Wish and more continued to increase Tuacahn’s reputation as a regional theatrical force. “We took a bit of a risk to elevate our production quality,” Anderson says. “We really put our reputation on the line and invested more than we ever had, and it paid off.”

SATURDAY MARKET Celebrating the arts in another way, Tuacahn’s Saturday Market features a wide range of local artists, crafts, food and entertainment, mingled with the natural beauty of Tuacahn’s unique setting. “It’s all part of an overall commitment to the community and the arts are a big part of that community,” Smith says. Tuacahn’s Saturday Market happens each Saturday year-round, weather permitting. LOOKING AHEAD Thanks to the past and future generosity of Tuacahn’s sponsors and patrons, the creative potential for future seasons knows no bounds. With the last 30 seasons serving as a guide, Tuacahn is excited at the prospect of taking regional theater to even greater heights in the future. See how Les Misérables comes to life at Tuacahn in our new docuseries, featuring an inside look at the people and process behind the production. Available on social media and YouTube.
