NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to 30 years!

Sitting in this beautiful red rock canyon, I am in awe of all that has transpired in this magnificent space. Just considering the natural wonders that shaped these mountains is enough to give one pause. But when I think of the growth we’ve seen in the last 30 years as a theater—from Tuacahn’s inspired, but more humble beginnings, to the spectacular productions that grace this stage night after night—there are just so many stories to share.

This season we’re continuing our remarkable 30-year tradition by offering some of our fan-favorites, including Disney’s The Little Mermaid, The Wizard of Oz and Newsies in the Outdoor Amphitheatre, and later in the season Elf the Musical and Million Dollar Quartet in the Indoor Hafen Theatre.

At Tuacahn, we are so proud of the quality we provide; truly it is second to none. As a unionized theater, both backstage and onstage, we bring Broadwayveteran actors together with regional talent, world-class directors and scenery and special effects that can’t be executed anywhere else, at a price that is roughly one-third of many national tours.

Perhaps even more remarkable are the memories we are helping to create for families. This year, we can’t wait for you to experience a lineup of familiar stories, told with a fresh approach. We think you’re going to love it!

Here’s to the next 30 years!

Sincerely,

Jeff has also worked for many regional theaters around the country, including 18 years with The Seattle Children's Theater. Besides helping create incredible shows at Tuacahn, Jeff enjoys exploring the desert and mountains with his wife and 2 kids.

AIDAN WELCH (Production Manager) I started in theater many years ago and have only ever worked in this industry. From the moment I first stepped foot into a theater, I knew it's what I had been looking for my entire life. I owe the curiosity that drove me to seek that first show to my High School theater teacher: Diane Queen. Ever since then, I have lived and worked in Washington

D.C., Fayetteville AR, Los Angeles CA as well as toured the world with multiple shows. I started as a stagehand, then carpenter, then technical director, and eventually moved into Production Management in order to give back to the art form which has nurtured me my entire adult life. Here I maintain the production budgets, interface with outside designers and our creative staff, maintain the production calendar and generally do everything and anything I can to make sure our planned season is moving forward and is up to the high standards our audience deserves. What excites me most about working at Tuacahn is the passion everyone has for it. Both the community and creative team have so much reverence for this place. I only want to do that justice in my role. I want to be part of why people care so much for Tuacahn. It is truly one of the most unique places on earth.

EMMA BELEW (Stage Operations Manager) is thrilled to return for a second year at Tuacahn. Prior to working in production management, she graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in Stage Management. During her time in Stage Management, she worked with Utah Shakespeare Festival, Broadway in Chicago, and the Polar Express Experience. In addition to Utah, her work in theater has taken her to Los Angeles, Chicago, and Hawaii. While not in Utah, she loves spending time in Los Angeles with her partner and two bunnies!

TROY MCGEE (Technical Director) started his Tuacahn career performing on stage, first in ’08 with Odyssey Dance Theatre’s Thriller, then in the ’09 Tuacahn Broadway season. When he came back the following season, he would spend time in between rehearsals helping out as a carpenter in the Scene Shop. He continued helping out seasonally until, in 2017, he became the Scene Shop Foreman. After the birth of his first child, he left that position and returned to performing. During the ’23 Tuacahn season he was pulling double duty as he took on the position of Assistant Technical Director while performing in the shows at night. He is excited to take on the position of Interim Technical Director and combine his experiences both on and off stage to help bring the shows to life. Moreover, he is grateful for the incredible teams and people he gets to work with every day, whose hard work is truly what breathes life into the shows.

L. FRANK BAUM (O: Author) (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author of children›s books, best known for writing The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, published in 1900. One of the most successful novels in American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz sold out instantly, became a cutlrual sensation, and sold over three million copies before entering the public domain in 1956. Baum wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works, including 83 short stories, over 200 poems,

and 55 novels. He made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen. Baum’s writings remarkably anticipated innovations including television, augmented reality, laptop computers (The Master Key), wireless telephones (Tik-Tok of Oz), women in high-risk, action-heavy occupations (Mary Louise in the Country), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing (Aunt Jane’s Nieces at Work).

HAROLD ARLEN (O: Music & Lyrics) (1905-1986) wrote some of the greatest hits from the 30’s and 40’s, including the entire score to the classic movie The Wizard of Oz. Songs such as “Over the Rainbow,” “Get Happy,” “Stormy Weather,” “It’s Only a Paper Moon,” “I’ve Got the World on a String” and “Last Night When We Were Young” are just some of the standards that live on today and have distinguished Harold Arlen as one of the Great American Composers of the 20th Century. Born and bred in New York, Harold Arlen began his career as an accompanist in vaudeville and appeared occasionally as a band vocalist on records, often singing his own compositions. During his career he wrote over 500 songs, including “Let’s Fall in Love,” “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” and “I Love a Parade” (all with lyrics by Ted Koehler). Arlen had a long and productive partnership with Johnny Mercer with many resulting hits, including “That Old Black Magic,” “Blues in the Night,” “Ac-CentTchu-Ate the Positive” and “One For My Baby (and One More for the Road).” His Broadway musicals include Bloomer Girl, St. Louis Woman, House of Flowers, Jamaica and Saratoga. Films include The Singing Kid (1936), Star Spangled Rhythm (1942), The Petty Girl (1950), My Blue Heaven (1950), The Farmer Takes a Wife (1953), and Gay Purr-ee (1962). With Ira Gershwin he wrote the songs for 1954’s A Star is Born, starring Judy Garland, including the Oscar-nominated “The Man That Got Away.” Arlen won an Academy Award for the song "Over the Rainbow," voted the 20th century›s No. 1 song by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

E. Y. HARBURG (O: Music & Lyrics) One of America’s greatest lyricists for stage and screen, Yip Harburg (1896-1981) was the son of poor Russian-Jewish immigrants and attended CCNY. Also a book writer (usually with Fred Saidy), director, and poet, Harburg wrote lyrics for more than 550 songs, including “It’s Only A Paper

ABOUT TUACAHN

OUR STORY

SSitting with a view of the majestic present-day Tuacahn Amphitheatre, it’s hard to imagine its primitive beginning. Yet just as this natural amphitheatre was shaped by centuries of scorching heat and desert rain, so too has the history and future of Tuacahn Center for the Arts been molded by winds of change and the shaping power of dreams.

Built on the shoulders of Orval Hafen (the original owner of Padre Canyon) as well as the unparalleled drive and ambition of Doug Stewart and Hyrum W. Smith, a seemingly impossible dream blossomed into the reality that exists today. Tuacahn owes its success to the hard work and sacrifice of an ensemble cast who each played an integral role in the history of this magnificent place. It was 1995 when Tuacahn’s debut performance of Utah! danced its way out of the red rocks and into the hearts of the people of southern Utah. After four years telling the complex story of the area’s

ancient inhabitants and pioneer settlers, it became increasingly clear Tuacahn needed to shift its strategy.

“We’re proud of what we accomplished with Utah!,” says Kevin Smith, Tuacahn CEO. “But after several years of one show it was clear that people wanted to see something new.” The answer came in 1999 in the form of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Tuacahn found itself in the enviable position of huge crowds and sold out houses and Broadway in the Canyon was born.

Since that time, Tuacahn has produced more than 60 Broadway shows, taking full advantage of the theater’s outdoor space and making talent, directorial and technical strides year after year.

Among the many pivotal moments in Tuacahn’s history, hiring Scott Anderson as the artistic director in 2005 proved to be critical. Anderson’s enthusiasm and ability

ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE

to cast a wider audition net — including more contracts with Actors Equity League of Regional Theaters — and pushing outside the box in terms of what people thought Tuacahn could produce, yielded some very prosperous results.

Tuacahn’s 2008 success as one of the first regional theaters to be granted the professional rights to produce Les Misérables put Tuacahn on the map in a whole new way. The show’s success made it possible to forge several key relationships, the first licensed regional theater outside of Broadway to produce Disney’s Tarzan. Subsequent licensing agreements with Disney to produce The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, When You Wish and more continued to increase Tuacahn’s reputation as a regional theatrical force.

“We took a bit of a risk to elevate our production quality,” Anderson says. “We really put our reputation on the line and invested more than we ever had, and it paid off.”

SATURDAY MARKET

Celebrating the arts in another way,

Tuacahn’s Saturday Market features a wide range of local artists, crafts, food and entertainment, mingled with the natural beauty of Tuacahn’s unique setting.

“It’s all part of an overall commitment to the community and the arts are a big part of that community,” Smith says.

Tuacahn’s Saturday Market happens each Saturday year-round, weather permitting.

LOOKING AHEAD

Thanks to the past and future generosity of Tuacahn’s sponsors and patrons, the creative potential for future seasons knows no bounds. With the last 29 seasons serving as a guide, Tuacahn is excited at the prospect of taking regional theater to even greater heights in the future.
