NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR To say we are excited to bring Tuacahn’s 22nd season to life would be an understatement as it includes a spectacular summer Broadway musical lineup, an all new holiday musical production, Fairy Tale Christmas, and concerts by The Fab Four, The Piano Guys and many more. Straight from the streets of our impeccably designed New York City set, Disney’s Newsies will be “carrying the banner” and fighting for the underdog. Meanwhile the fantastical world of Shrek, The Musical combines big, colorful costumes with humor that is perfect for families to enjoy. And you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone not dancing and singing in the aisles as they leave this year’s production of Mamma Mia! The very best way to enjoy this incredible season is to purchase a season package. The benefits of a season package include the following: - Lowest price for all three Broadway shows. - 20% savings on most concerts and Fairy Tale Christmas. - One free date exchange per Broadway show. Premium season package holders receive all that plus: - Access to the new air-conditioned VIP lounge with private concessions and restrooms. - Complimentary seat cushion rental and bottled water at your seat during Broadway shows. At Tuacahn, we provide so much more than just an opportunity to see amazing Broadway shows. Our patrons love the state-of-the-art technological elements, the larger-than-life set designs, the top notch singing, acting and dancing, and the beautiful canyon scenery that makes seeing a show at Tuacahn an unforgettable experience. Tuacahn High School (THS) for the Performing Arts is Utah’s first public charter school, opening in 1999. THS offers an intimate college and career preparatory academic experience with a focus on the arts - music, dance, drama, musical theatre, visual arts, and technical theatre. There is no tuition for Utah residents and outof-state students pay a modest investment to attend. Combined with the Amphitheatre, there is no other high school experience comparable to Tuacahn High School.

NEWSIES DIRECTOR NOTES I don’t think a lot of audience members know what a Director/Choreographer actually does (that’s a good thing - I believe if you are aware of the direction of a play or musical there’s a good chance it’s not good direction). So let’s assume you are reading this in between bites of a cinnamon churro or some frozen lemonade, looking for some theatrical enlightenment. A director reads the play or musical and decides how the action on the stage is going to occur, what parts of the story are most important to convey and how to best convey them. Basically, the director ultimately guides, or directs, the actors, musicians, and designers towards his or her vision about how the show will look, feel and manifest. For instance, an actor might say a line of dialogue with a lot of anger and frustration. The director might feel that the line will land better with the audience if it’s said in a slightly different manner, and will help guide the actor that way. The monstrously beautiful set in front of you, designed by Brad Shelton, is the result of Brad and I sitting together last fall, discussing what we wanted you to feel while you watch the show as well as what the story and my choreography requires. Hopefully, you are feeling a sense of the massive size of New York City, and when our actors tell our story, you will, maybe, see a small group of young individuals trying to fight against a larger power. (Hint: that is what we are going for, but you might see something else as well. That’s cool, too!) Thus the set acts as a metaphor as well as practical scenic device. These are just two of many examples of how directors work. A choreographer is in charge of the actual movement of the piece, including the dancing. If someone does a physical movement to music, the choreographer, in most cases, directed them to do it. Now, if the Director/Choreographer has a Cracker Jack team around him (as I definitely do) the work elevates to an even better level than he or she could have ever been able to accomplish on his or her own. I am the beneficiary of an incredibly talented, dedicated and smart cast: my awesome Production Stage Manager, Monica Dickhens; fantastic designers - Brad Shelton on Scenic Design, Cory Pattak on Lighting Design, Maria Lenn on Costume Design, Julie Ferrin on Sound Design, Jen Schuler on Props, D. Alexander Rovang on Music Direction; my irreplaceable Associate Choreographer, Ashley Marinelli; plus, the countless other people who help support and facilitate the process. The product you are about to see has been creatively influenced by all of us, not just me, and I’m incredibly proud and honored to be working with all of them. The story of the Newsies strike of 1899 is important, and we have all been tasked with bringing it to life with truth, joy and humor. I hope you enjoy 1.) the show, 2.) this short theatre 101 lesson, and 3.) your cinnamon churro. Thank you for coming to Tuacahn!

MAMMA MIA! DIRECTOR NOTES When I was first asked to Direct and Choreograph Mamma Mia! for this season at Tuacahn, I was a little hesitant because I didn’t know very much about the show. I had seen it once in Las Vegas years ago and didn’t have a strong feeling about it one way or another. But after looking at numerous versions of the show online - Broadway, Brazilian, Argentine, German, and even Russian versions - all with the exact same staging and choreography - I thought - okay - I can do something with this! Utilizing my years of experience with the magical Tuacahn stage - I realized here was a wonderful opportunity to imagine the show in a fresh new way - utilizing the bells and whistles that can only be categorized as the “Tuacahn!” experience. The second thing I realized is how catchy and wonderful all the ABBA songs were - (I was more of a Beatles fan in those days!) - But there’s not a bad tune in the whole show! Each song is cleverly woven into a script that touches the heart and has real emotions on display: A young girl’s desire to know who her father is - and to somehow fill that gaping hole in her past as she steps towards the next phase of her life marriage! Truly a bitter sweet story that is carried on the wings of an amazing score - all the ingredients needed for a great musical - which Mamma Mia! really is! As I’ve worked on preparations for the show - Sophie’s journey has hit home in so many ways. I just recently had two of my daughters married within three weeks of each other (couldn’t get them to wear the same dress!) and had the heartbreaking and tender opportunity to walk down the aisle and give them away. They are your little girls… and you’re so proud of them and wish them all the happiness! So in the end - Mamma Mia! is about Family - and how important is to know who you are and where you come from - a universal theme that resonates with all of us! Enjoy!
