In my short time in Utah, one thing has been remarkably clear: this state is filled with people who love and prioritize the arts. As your new President and CEO of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, I couldn’t be more honored and excited to serve our community as we work together to uphold and build upon the legacy of this unique organization.

While many industries have taken a massive hit because of COVID-19, the arts in particular came to a complete stand-still last spring. All of us had to face the tough question: How do we preserve the magic of live performance when we cannot congregate as a community in person? I am so proud of the tireless efforts of USUO’s Board, staff, musicians, and community for coming together to find a path which has returned live performances for distanced audiences back to our stages.

I hope that you enjoy the creative programs we’re offering. They are designed not only to inspire, transport, and entertain you, but to do so with the safety of the public, our artists, and our staff as our foremost concern.

We still have discoveries, decisions, and milestones ahead of us, but let us relish this moment together.

USUO 2020 PANDEMIC ACTIVITIES

The Utah Symphony is thrilled to be back on the stage of Abravanel Hall! We express gratitude and thanks for the heartwarming support received from our community and colleagues during a time of uncertainty. While we haven’t been able to offer typical performances due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve still been busy finding ways to connect the community—from a distance—through great live music. Below, discover how Utah Symphony has brightened social media feeds, curated online educational resources, contributed to pandemic relief efforts, and even given world premieres of new pieces from home during quarantine.

Within a week of Utah’s schools closing in March, our Education Department organized existing digital content, converted other items to be shared digitally, and developed new ideas to help support teachers, parents and students in our suddenly digital-only learning environment. Utah Symphony’s School from Home page now offers Virtual Assemblies, education videos featuring the Musicians of the Utah Symphony, symphony bingo, listening music scavenger hunts, and “Ask a Musician” boxes.

In addition, the new Virtual Listening Room on utahsymphony.org includes links to streaming, curated playlists, past performance clips, and Ghost Light Podcast episodes. The latter series includes a special edition talking about the ways that music has connected humanity in times of crisis throughout history, as well as “Music Knows Exactly How You Feel” and “Live Music After Corona.”

In April, our orchestra musicians, staff, opera chorus members, and our volunteer network teamed up to express thanks to all of our supporters who have donated tickets to cancelled performances and stepped up their donations to make sure this organization continues well into the future. The Utah Opera costume shop team also completed several hundred masks in just two weeks to donate to Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.

KSL TV included our very own Tad Calcara (whose Good Mornin’ video on has 16,000+ shares and over 1 million views on Facebook) in a feature about the creative ways that people are finding to use music as salve during isolation. Tad’s other popular videos include arrangements of George Gershwin’s Somebody Loves Me and Irving Berlin’s Puttin’ on the Ritz.

Other creative musical endeavors shared

by Utah Symphony musicians include Associate Principal Trombone Sam Elliot playing a Bach two-part invention with a ‘Sam Elliot from the past’; Violin Lynn Rosen playing Jean-Marie Leclair’s Sonata for Two Violins with herself; Associate Principal Clarinet Erin SvobodaScott playing all three parts of a klezmer folk tune; and Principal Trumpet Travis Peterson, with the aid of recent guest conductor Jerry Steichen (all the way from his living room in Manhattan), performing “The Lord’s Prayer” for Easter. Violin Yuki MacQueen took social distancing seriously by performing a duet from a distance of 2000 miles with a student of hers from Haiti, Alexandre Santya.

colleagues from around the country to perform the slow movement of Bach’s Double Concerto in D Minor, all from their respective homes.

In May, Utah Symphony shared a musical thank you to essential workers featuring Utah Symphony musicians playing Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. Governor Gary Herbert, Congressional Representative Ben McAdams, and Senator Luz Escamilla joined Utah Symphony Musical Director Thierry Fischer and Interim President & CEO Pat Richards in a special introduction to the glorious music by our musicians set to photos of the valiant healthcare workers, essential staff, and first responders risking their lives to help us through this stressful time.

May also brought the two world premieres of pieces commissioned by Utah Symphony. First was Fanfare of Hope and Solidarity by Augusta Read Thomas. This piece was composed in late April and early May and recorded by the musicians of the orchestra in their homes, then audio engineered by Stoker White and Funk Studios and video produced and edited

by Andrea Peterson. We believe this was the first world premiere by an American orchestra during the time of COVID-19.

Thomas shared her thoughts on the project: “I believe music feeds our souls.

The second premiere was Longing from Afar by Dai Fujikura. This piece is about being together even when we’re physically apart, and was recorded live via a video conference. Fujikura drew inspiration for this piece by “considering how all musicians make sound together even when we are all physically far apart.” Both premieres are still available on the Utah Symphony Facebook and YouTube pages.

One of the most exciting announcements of the summer was of the 2021 Deer Valley Music Festival, a year in advance!

If you bought tickets for the 2020 festival performances or the Temptations at Abravanel Hall, you will be sent new tickets for the corresponding 2021 concerts. For all of you who are dreaming of escaping into great live music in the mountains again, tickets for the 2021 festival are on sale now at deervalleymusicfestival.org.

Another exciting announcement came in June, with the appointment of Steven Brosvik as the next President and CEO of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera. Steve has many years’ experience in leadership roles with Baltimore Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Houston Symphony and Nashville Symphony. He loves “Being one of the people who helps support

Another wonderful opportunity to support USUO came thanks to the Alternative Visions Fund, an anonymous donor advised fund of the Chicago Community Foundation, which has awarded USUO a matching challenge grant in support of the Alternative Visions COVID-19 Relief Fund Challenge at USUO. All contributions received before October 1 will be matched on a 1:1 basis up to a total maximum match of $500,000. If you have been considering a contribution to USUO or increasing your annual gift, doing so before October 1 will make your investment go twice as far.

In August, a new 5,000 square foot public art piece was unveiled in downtown Salt Lake City that celebrates the impact

of Utah women—past and present— in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The mural was commissioned by Zions Bank and is located on the east-facing wall of the Dinwoody Building located at 37 West 100 South. It includes current Utah Symphony musicians Concertmaster Madeline Adkins and Principal Flute Mercedes Smith, as well as long-time volunteer Lona Mae Lauritzen, and is a beautiful contribution to our community.

At another small, outdoor Park City event this summer, one guest remarked, “It was a thrill to just hear a live performance.

I had to wipe a tear away to hear such beautiful music.” We feel the same way, and hope you do tonight as well. Thank you for helping Utah Symphony to once again connect the community through great live music. Please enjoy our reimagined 2020–21 season!

ARTISTS’ PROFILES

Acclaimed by the Salt Lake Tribune as, “marrying unimpeachable technical skill with a persuasive and perceptive voice,” violinist Kathryn Eberle is the Associate Concertmaster of the Utah Symphony and the newly-appointed Concertmaster of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. Ms. Eberle has also served as Guest Concertmaster with the Kansas City, Omaha, and Richmond Symphonies.

Ms. Eberle performs annually as soloist with the Utah Symphony. She made her subscription series debut with the USO in 2014 performing Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade. Most recently, she performed Edgar Meyer’s Violin Concerto in January 2020. Other solo appearances include performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Nashville Symphony, the Louisville Orchestra, the National Academy Orchestra of Canada, and the Bahia Symphony in Brazil.

An avid chamber musician, Ms. Eberle has collaborated with such artists as Arnold Steinhardt, Edgar Meyer, Jaime Laredo, and Ricardo Morales. Festival appearances include Yellow Barn, Banff, Aspen, Missillac, Sewanee, Laguna Beach, Fairbanks Summer Arts, Innsbrook Institute and Festival Mozaic.

A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Ms. Eberle began her violin studies on her third birthday. She received a Master’s Degree from The Juilliard School studying with Sylvia Rosenberg. She previously studied with Robert Lipsett and Cornelia Heard at the Colburn School, Blair School of Music and the University of Southern California where she received the String Department and Symphony awards upon graduation. Ms. Eberle performs on a 1754 Gennaro Gagliano violin, the ex “Von Vecsey.

Cellist Anne Lee started music lessons at the age of 5 in Calgary, Alberta and has since enjoyed appearances in several music festivals, including the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Banff Arts Festival, and the Sun Valley Music Festival. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music at McGill University with professors Antonio Lysy and Elizabeth Dolin. She then received her Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory of Music with Natasha Brofsky. After her graduate studies, she was the recipient of the Alberta Foundation of the Arts grant and spent a year in Barcelona, Spain studying with Lluis Claret. Prior to joining the Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, Ms. Lee was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida. Aside from her love of performing the orchestral repertoire, Anne enjoys playing chamber music, teaching, and exploring the great outdoors with her husband, violinist Claude Halter.

Jason Hardink Piano

A fearless interpreter of large-scale piano works both modern and historical, Jason Hardink’s recent repertoire includes the complete Michael Hersch The Vanishing Pavilions, Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus, the Liszt Transcendental Etudes paired with the Boulez Notations, and Wolfgang Rihm’s numbered Klavierstücke, all of which he performs from memory. Recent performances include his debut at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music as soloist in the North American premiere of Gerald Barry’s Piano Concerto with conductor Cristian Macelaru. Events during the 2018–19 season include Andrew Norman’s piano concerto Suspend with Thierry Fischer and the Utah Symphony (September 2018), a solo recital at Carnegie Hall presented by Key Pianists (February 2019), and performances of Michael Hersch’s stunning 2.5-hour solo piano cycle The Vanishing Pavilions at Oberlin Conservatory (November 2019) and Aperio, Music of the Americas (Houston, April 2019).

Much sought after as a chamber musician, Mr. Hardink has collaborated with violinists Augustin Hadelich, Nicola Benedetti, and Phillip Setzer. He has appeared on chamber music series all over the U.S., including Music in Context, fEARnoMUSIC, Music on the Hill, Aperio Music of the Americas, Montana Chamber Music Society, and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. Hardink has performed solo works of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, and Brahms on period instruments, and he has toured Norway with violinist Tor Johan Bøen performing the Grieg Sonatas for Violin and Piano on an 1853 Blüthner.

He has performed concerti with conductors Donald Runnicles, Carlos Kalmar, and Brett Mitchell and regularly appears at the Grand Teton Music Festival every summer.

Mr. Hardink has appeared as guest recitalist and adjudicator for both the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and the Oberlin International Piano Competition. He has served as guest artist for the University of Utah Summer Chamber Music Workshop and the Idaho State University Summer Piano Institute. A native of Rhode Island and a graduate

of both Oberlin Conservatory and the Shepherd School of Music, his former teachers include Robert Boberg and Sanford Margolis. Hardink holds a DMA from Rice University, where he studied with Brian Connelly; his Doctoral thesis “Messiaen and Plainchant” explores the varying levels of influence that Gregorian chant exerted on the music of Olivier Messiaen.

Green includes musical and visual creations, collaborations, educational outreach, and more. Behind all of his artistic endeavors are the ideals of equality and freedom, which manifest themselves in diverse ways throughout his body of work. In his preface of To Anacreon in the US (2019), Green writes: “The conclusion of Feux d’artifice—the last piano prelude by Claude Debussy—ends with a low rumbling and a quotation of Le Marseillaise. Before this section, Debussy demands powerful, ascending chords (5-note chords in the left hand). To Anacreon in the US takes the national anthem (hymn) of the USA (which is originally a formal British drinking song entitled To Anacreon in Heaven), and applies a similar Debussy-esque process, along with permutations, elongations, zen counterpoint, ostinati, displacement, and pianistic gestures that all stem from the melody to The Star-Spangled Banner. The last gesture is a bold, chordal statement— the chord that would have been composed if Debussy continued his ascending gesture on that brilliant last page.” The five minute piece can be performed as either a postlude to the Debussy or as a stand-alone prelude in its own right.

The dusty attic of music history is littered with experimental or novelty instruments that did not stand the test of time.

Beethoven wrote his Wellington’s Victory for

the panharmonicon, a mechanical band in a box; Mozart asked for a strumento d’acciaio (a keyed glockenspiel) in the Magic Flute; Schubert composed a masterful sonata for a fretted guitar/cello hybrid called the arpeggione. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), in his Tzigane, wrote for the luthéal, an iron contraption attached to the inner works of a grand piano. It had stops that could be manipulated by the pianist to create sounds reminiscent of the lute, harp, or, especially apropos to this work, the cimbalom. Commissioned and dedicated to the Hungarian violinist Jelly d’Arányi, Tzigane is conceived in a virtuosic and improvisatory gypsy style. As in his Spanish-flavored works, Ravel crafted the melodies to sound authentic, but no actual folk melodies were harmed in the composition of this piece.

Before Ludwig van Beethoven (17701827) cashed in (or perhaps sold out!) with the aforementioned battle symphony in a box, he was a fiercely talented youngster trying to make a name for himself in Vienna. His Opus one, a set of three piano trios, is dedicated to the composer’s patron Prince Lichnowsky. The third of these trios includes all the hallmarks that make Beethoven’s music so gripping.

These are familiar characteristics to listeners now, but imagine hearing the first performance at the Prince’s house in 1795: the pathos of c minor, the extended (compared to Haydn, for instance) development of thematic cells, and the stunningly inventive and virtuosic theme and variation movement. Keeping a conventional Minuet movement instead of a revolutionary Scherzo is one of this work’s few nods to tradition. The composer himself must have realized and loved its quintessentially Beethoven characteristics, because he re-composed this work in 1817 as the String Quintet, Op. 104.

UTAH SYMPHONY GUILD OUR MISSION

Because we believe great music can elevate the human spirit, the purpose of the Guild is to foster, promote, and facilitate the operation of the Utah Symphony Orchestra financially, socially, and educatonally.

It is our honor to maintain a gift shop throughout the year which raises funds for our orchestra. We have added all our available items to the “online store” and all proceeds go to USUO. We will continue adding events as social distancing requirements allow to aid in rasing funds for our great orchestra.

We will sponsor the Youth Guild and outreach violin lessons again this season, and we appreciate your ongoing support of these important community programs.
