NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Tuacahn’s 2024 season is fresh, new

Looking around at this amazing Tuacahn Amphitheatre and knowing the stunning scope of each of this season’s productions, it seems impossible to encapsulate 2024 into a single word; but if I had to, the word would be NEW.

All new!

We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s fresh lineup featuring Disney’s Frozen, Anastasia and Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons in the Outdoor Amphitheatre and Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash and A Christmas Carol, The Musical in the Indoor Hafen Theatre, none of which have ever been seen on the Tuacahn stages.

Not only that, we’re reaching new heights for box office numbers, new levels of creativity and design, and offering new seating options — with even more seats available, and more with comfortable padding! The list of fresh, innovative happenings at Tuacahn goes on and on.

Thankfully, however, not everything is completely new. For example, we are thrilled to welcome back some of the directors and creative teams that have previously helped us transport audiences into a world beyond their imaginations. And we are continuing the high level of excellence audiences have come to expect here in the canyon, with seasoned Tuacahn veterans and those who are new to the Tuacahn family all working side-by-side to create a season that truly offers something for everyone.

From Disney princesses and Russian royalty to renowned musicians and a Christmas classic that has stood the test of time, the all-new 2024 Tuacahn season is shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular!

Sincerely,

In Memoriam

Marion Bentley, Dean Cox, Hyrum W. Smith, Dr. L. Douglas Smoot, Dara Tancredi

Founded in 1991, Tuacahn Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that is nestled at the base of Padre Canyon, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs that rise thousands of feet into the beautiful blue southern Utah sky.

MISSION: Tuacahn edifies and inspires the human spirit through professional world-class family entertainment and an unparalleled artistic and educational experience that matches the majesty of our canyon.

Known best for its professional theatre, Tuacahn attracts the most talented actors in America. Each year, thousands of applicants audition from New York City to Los Angeles. Tuacahn productions include members of Actors’ Equity Association, the union for professional actors and stage managers, many of whom have appeared on Broadway or and other nationally recognized venues.

As a community asset, Tuacahn entertains more than 350,000 patrons each year, with musicals, concerts, shopping, food, and other special events. Tuacahn is Utah’s largest professional non-profit theatre and acts as an economic engine generating an annual impact of more than $110 million. Visitors stay in hotels, dine at restaurants, and shop at retail outlets while enjoying recreational activities in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES

PEGGY HICKEY In 2023, our hearts were broken when we lost a beloved and cherished member of our Tuacahn family.

The delightful Peggy Hickey burst onto the Tuacahn scene as Director/Choreographer for the Indoor Hafen Theatre production of the Tony Award winning musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Peggy brought Broadway to Southern Utah with this top notch production that was perfect in each and every detail. Audiences were thoroughly entertained and impressed as she set the bar for excellence for our indoor productions.

Peggy returned that winter to direct Elf, The Musical which became our bestselling Christmas show at the time. In the amphitheatre, Peggy choreographed Tuacahn’s epic production of The Count of Monte Cristo and the electric and heartwarming School of Rock. Peggy’s final show at Tuacahn was director of the enchanting Disney classic, Mary Poppins.

Peggy began her career after graduating from Sacramento State University, working extensively as a dancer/singer at regional theaters across the country and then advancing quickly to Choreographer and Director. Peggy was an extremely versatile and gifted choreographer working not just in theatre but also in film, television, opera and video. Her choreography was seen at Goodspeed, Lincoln Center, the Chatalet in Paris, Papermill, Old Globe, Sacramento Music Circus, Seattle 5th Ave, Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington Opera, NY City Opera, and Seattle Opera for which she garnered many awards and accolades.

For television and film, Peggy choreographed The Brady Bunch Movie, Beck’s New Pollution (MTV Award for Choreography), Samantha Who, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, 90210, and Kennedy Center Presents “Die Fledermaus” on PBS.

Peggy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2016. Despite these devastating medical conditions, Peggy achieved her greatest professional success during this period choreographing the Broadway hits, A Gentleman’s Guide To Love and Murder (2014 Tony Award for Best New Musical, Outer Critics and Astaire nominee for Best Choreography) and Anastasia (opened in 2017 and ran for 842-performances). Tuacahn is proud to present the regional premier

of Anastasia, especially knowing that Peggy helped craft this wonderful story of home, love and family

In addition to her talent and success, Peggy will be remembered for the love and pure joy that she brought to her craft. Peggy truly loved people and actively nurtured her relationships. Although her she is no longer with us, her light will continually shine at Tuacahn through the lives she has touched. The Tuacahn family would like to offer our sincerest condolences to her family who were the loves of her life: husband, Tony Perez and daughters, Molly and Gabriella.

Donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to the Peggy Hickey Memorial Scholarship in Musical Theater on behalf of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television where Peggy was a beloved professor for over 20-years, teaching dance. ABOUT TUACAHN

OUR STORY

Sitting with a view of the majestic present-day Tuacahn Amphitheatre, it’s hard to imagine its primitive beginning. Yet just as this natural amphitheatre was shaped by centuries of scorching heat and desert rain, so too has the history and future of Tuacahn Center for the Arts been molded by winds of change and the shaping power of dreams.

Built on the shoulders of Orval Hafen (the original owner of Padre Canyon) as well as the unparalleled drive and ambition of Doug Stewart and Hyrum W. Smith, a seemingly impossible dream blossomed into the reality that exists today. Tuacahn owes its success to the hard work and sacrifice of an ensemble cast who each played an integral role in the history of this magnificent place. It was 1995 when Tuacahn’s debut performance of Utah! danced its way out of the red rocks and into the hearts of the people of southern Utah. After four years telling the complex story of the area’s

ancient inhabitants and pioneer settlers, it became increasingly clear Tuacahn needed to shift its strategy.

“We’re proud of what we accomplished with Utah!,” says Kevin Smith, Tuacahn CEO. “But after several years of one show it was clear that people wanted to see something new.” The answer came in 1999 in the form of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Tuacahn found itself in the enviable position of huge crowds and sold out houses and Broadway in the Canyon was born.

Since that time, Tuacahn has produced more than 60 Broadway shows, taking full advantage of the theater’s outdoor space and making talent, directorial and technical strides year after year.

Among the many pivotal moments in Tuacahn’s history, hiring Scott Anderson as the artistic director in 2005 proved to be critical. Anderson’s enthusiasm and ability

ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE

to cast a wider audition net — including more contracts with Actors Equity League of Regional Theaters — and pushing outside the box in terms of what people thought Tuacahn could produce, yielded some very prosperous results.

Tuacahn’s 2008 success as one of the first regional theaters to be granted the professional rights to produce Les Misérables put Tuacahn on the map in a whole new way. The show’s success made it possible to forge several key relationships, the first licensed regional theater outside of Broadway to produce Disney’s Tarzan. Subsequent licensing agreements with Disney to produce The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, When You Wish and more continued to increase Tuacahn’s reputation as a regional theatrical force.

“We took a bit of a risk to elevate our production quality,” Anderson says. “We really put our reputation on the line and invested more than we ever had, and it paid off.”

SATURDAY MARKET

Celebrating the arts in another way,

Tuacahn’s Saturday Market features a wide range of local artists, crafts, food and entertainment, mingled with the natural beauty of Tuacahn’s unique setting.

“It’s all part of an overall commitment to the community and the arts are a big part of that community,” Smith says.

Tuacahn’s Saturday Market happens each Saturday year-round, weather permitting.

LOOKING AHEAD

Thanks to the past and future generosity of Tuacahn’s sponsors and patrons, the creative potential for future seasons knows no bounds. With the last 28 seasons serving as a guide, Tuacahn is excited at the prospect of taking regional theater to even greater heights in the future.
